1:20 Could be these sprites were meant to show during Mario/Luigi's idle state? The thinking pose when Mario stays in place long enough and the ones where Mario rises his arms when the time is running out, telling the player to hurry up.
It can be used for just about anything which makes it hard to pin point what it was really meant for. I think that maybe the thinking one was meant for the main menu before they had the attract mode programmed in, and I actually do think that the one with his arms moving up and down were likely meant for a time over effect of some sort. Dying upon running out of time never really made sense, so throwing your arms up and down in a defeated manor certainly fits the bill
Good video! Not easy to find something new about Super Mario Bros. but you managed to pull it off! Those early sprite-sheets of SMB1 was really interesting! I think he was supposed to ride a cloud at an early stage of development, maybe those sprites were for making the cloud go up or down? Just speculation of course :)
6:14 In this footage, we can also see that the levels were ordered differently and put into different spots, and even have different palettes sometimes. All those levels aren't in their final locations. For example, that 5-3 stage is actually 4-3 in the final game, and in the final has a regular overworld palette but there it uses the castle palette (aka Snow Night when used in overworld stages). Also, fun fact about VS. Super Mario Bros.: funnily enough, it was the first and for a while only version of Super Mario Bros. 1 available on the Nintendo Switch. It was released as part of the Arcade Archives series long before the NSO service with the NES games launched. So if you wanted to play an NES Super Mario title on the Switch at that time, VS. Super Mario Bros. was your only option lol.
I imagine Mario's palette doesn't match the artwork (or arcade colors) like it used to so that they could repurpose those colors for Koopas, Toad, Toadstool etc., given they could only use so many palettes at a time. Made him more drab so the colors could be multi purpose. Of course if you play as Luigi you aren't rescuing green toads but his palette appears in Mario gameplay when you power up or get a star so the theory still stands methinks
I haven’t finished watching this video yet, but your channel seems very interested. I’ll be keeping an eye to see how this channel grows. Anyways good job so far (Also here before 300 subs).
Got a new sub, I love video game history. I feel lucky to have enjoyed being a kids back then. We got the first nes for xmas. I'll never forget it. It was a combo back with duck hunt.. anyway I enjoy the history very much behind my fave things...
Good clue about SMB is that 5-1 has a small castle at the beginning, not the big one like all other *-1 levels. Suggesting that 5-1 was moved to that position later in development and they forgot to change the castle. And 5-3 is a repeat of 1-3... So, it's possible that the current 5-1 was supposed to be 5-3 or something else, while the original 5-1 was scrapped, when they realized they didn't have enough space on the cart and that they'd have to make repeat levels
Its actually more than tripled in terms of views over the past few days, so I guess the RUclips algorithm just likes it quite a bit as of late? It happens randomly every few months, so its kinda weird, haha! If you liked this one, keep an eye out on the channel in the coming weeks, I've been working on many new videos and they should be finished soon~ish! Thanks for the support, while my channel is small I try my best to make the most entertaining and informative content I can, so I really appreciate it!
smb1 has an unused enemy that used the sprite bank of a scrambled buzzy beetle that stands in place (including in mid-air) and turns into a koopa troopa when stomped
One this you didn't mention is the early concepts, the Game at some point was gonna have Mario riding in a cloud holding a gun shooting enemies. This was scrapped early on. For Mario two you didn't mention that there is an unused car wheel sprite in the code
Yeah, I had it in my notes but forgot to add it to the final script! It's one of my greatest regrets, haha, i even had the picture saved and everything and forgot about it entirely! Maybe I'll make a video in the future where I correct mistakes in my videos and share additional information that's been discovered since/I forgot to add
It is, it's from 2-1, heres the link of the full stage: www.mariouniverse.com/wp-content/img/maps/arc/vssmb/2-1.png It's about halfway through but a bit to the right, look above the subworld bonus room and you'll see it 👍
Ah, well the level layout is the same, maybe the source I got the screenshot from (tcrf) used a recreation of the levels in SMB1? Beats me, but it serves the same purpose regardless so it doesn't bother me much, good to know though!
The industry would've revived itself in one way or another, but the timing and way in which Nintendo released the NES with Mario is greatly important and responsible for the current landscape of gaming as we know it seeing as the United States is one of the largest markets for gaming estimated as of 2022 to be a 54.9 billion dollar industry which probably wouldnt be as large without Nintendo.
@@MamaLouiji all that would have happened is the UK market would have taken the market share more. Mario was also made less relevant by the fact that the NES flopped in the UK.
That.... isn't the point im trying to make? I said the gaming landscape would be vastly different had Mario not come out, it is responsible for molding the gaming industry as we know it today, so by admitting that the UK would be the leading place for gaming you're agreeing?

You made me think of the different sprite of Mario thinking being like: "Why are you wasting time?"
Super Mario Bros., the game that needs no introduction! **proceeds to introduce the game**
