Tumbling Rocks Into CRYSTALS?! | National Geographic Rock Tumbler

  • So today I thought I'd try tumbling rocks and turning them into crystals using the National Geographic rock tumbler kit. Now this rock tumbler kit was rather expensive so I was a little worried it wouldn't work, however National Geographic came through, and in the end I definitely thought it was worth the price. I went in to this not realising how long it takes to tumble rocks and turn them into crystals, but it makes sense considering it takes years in the sea etc. But overall I really enjoyed the process, I just wish I had the time to leave the rocks in the tumbler a little longer to really get some nice shiny crystals. But let me know what your thoughts were on this National Geographic rock tumbler kit, and if you have any products you want me to test out on the channel, feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments below!

    I just bought this kit a few weeks back! I watched this guy on yt that does this all of the time. He said that the grits they give you will not make the rocks super shiny, they need a super fine grit to do that. so it wasn't you cutting corners, it is the kit.

I'm still half tempted, but the kit would probably end up in one of the many cupboards full of unused craft I currently have. Grandson has one he is getting for Christmas. He is 10. Lmao at how long this will take him. Told him we would go to the garnet mines by me and hopefully next summer to the diamond mines in NY State. But this will be epic testing a 10 year old’s patience. But I’ve quite a lot of gemstones here in the rough. I’ll give him some to do. ❤❤❤ this post. Too funny because daughter just showed me what she got him yesterday. Great timing🥰

    You really have to rinse the old grit off and clean the tumbler between grits because any coarse grit left behind wont allow the polish to work to its full potential. If that makes sense. I learned that from a rock polishing channel. That is what he said. ? Maybe thats why ?? Idk 🤷‍♀️ edit oh I saw the comment where the grits aren't fine enough so I guess that's why 😊

  • @ChristineARose
    @ChristineARose 9 месяцев назад +1

    I know there are some Polymer Clay Artists that use a rock tumbler, with really fine grit sandpaper snippets, to polish their "rocks". Still takes time, but better than having to polish every stage by hand 🙂

    My sister inlaw did this year's ago her tumbling machine was kept in the cellar under the house because it took so long for the stones to end up with a polished look,l have always been fascinated with polished stones but would never invest in one of those machines,l would rather buy them ready to use but as l know the time and effort that goes into polished stones l don't mind the price if they are reasonable😍

    I have a mid level rock tumbling set up, not the nat geo one, and whilst its beautiful when you find gems from uk beaches. But it takes BLOODY AGESSSSSSSSSS. When the cost of electricity went up loads, my tumbling went away because whilst not mega expensive, a potentially 3 week 24/7 running time, adds up.....

      My father was into lapidary (that’s the fancy word for tumbling rocks), and he tumbled all sorts of gems from opals to rocks from the side of the road. They all end up looking fabulous, if you take the time to do it properly (small dig at you there Ant!). I was so excited to see you do this and so pleased you didn’t chuck the towel in when you found out it was going to take you about a month. Possibly the most patient I have ever seen you be! Roadside rocks end up looking pretty cool, especially if you can get them shiny. Maybe in a future video and you could try this? Just get some rocks from the side of the road, or the beach if you live near one ,and chuck them in your tumbler and tumble away. I hope you can buy refills of your grit. I’m sure you can. Thanks so much for this video. I’m a little excited and might even buy one of these for myself, as we sold off all of Dad‘s stuff when he passed away. I still have lots of the jewelry he made for me though. This brought up so happy memories. Thanks Ant! ❤❤❤
