People often forget the influence of surf and garage rock on the riffs etc of Ray and other punk bands (boomers lol). Thanks for bringing attention to his playing.
Brilliant Adrian, I used to play 'kill the poor' in my school band, I am 55 on the 12th, I loved theDK then and I love them now. Cheers, I really appreciate this.
I met east bay ray after a DK gig years ago. He was hiding out on a stairwell directly after coming off stage. A real gentleman and one of the greatest punk guitarists. His playing made the DKs so unique.
Adrian, the entire YT guitar community would be such a lesser place without you. Your contribution over the last few years has just been enormous . Thank you. Andy. Oxford - UK
🙏🙏🙏 Thank you, thank you! A native Californian here...a teen in the early 80s. East Bay Ray was a standout of the era...no other California punk matched this. Following you on Patreon too and love the diversity you bring.
When I was 16, the guys that knew how to play guitar only wanted to show me how to play Dokken and Judas Priest. Now that I'm 50, I found someone to teach the stuff I actually like! After a couple of DK tracks, how about some Black Flag? Any era. I'd even like to learn some of those noodley solos that Ginn got into later.
Adrian plays it for real how I used to play it on the air guitar. I love how punk was supposed to be anti music, but to play this song clean at full speed takes some proper talent.
Man, indulge all you like. I'm always just floored at how faithful to the source your renditions are. Whenever I hear "Holiday" it makes me remember how I'd always be reeling from "Ill in the Head", which precedes it ... that would be another much welcomed tutorial should you be contemplating deeper cuts (if there are any) from that album. Such an excellent channel you've got! And it's gotten better over the years!
This is a hugely underrated song. And the sound is basically surf music. I salute your choice of songs: Another Girl, Another Planet, Shot By Both Side, Public Image, Joy Division.
FARK! Blowing my mind, man! Words can't describe. Life changing. Gushing. I've been a DK fan for 40 years. One of those bands that you always wanted to see but thought you never would. Lo and behold, I've participated in two Jello spoken word shows and trashed out to the band themselves at Concord 2 down there in Brighton. Dreams can come true. Always wondered how to play this and basically all DK songs. Thank you. So thankful for your ear. Subscribed.
These deep dives are fantastic. I hear things with my tired ears for the first time every time you do one. I know they are time consuming but they are really appreciated. Don't feel the pressure to do one regularly though if you don't have the mojo. We don't want to burn you out ♡
Wow, you are hands down the best guitar tutorial channel on RUclips. Never thought of the Holiday or any Dead Kennedy song as an "instrumental" but I could (and have) listen to this over and over. Awesome!!. Thanks so much for making these lessons!
The living proof that punk can combine pure energy and brilliant melody. That was one of my top tracks back in the early 80's and i used to pogo around with my friends at parties on DK. I'm 59 now and still listen to good old vintage punk stuff !
Adrian, I have to admit, you've been totally spoiling us recently (well, me for sure) but would it be too much to ask, in terms of all things punk, maybe somewhere down the line, a lesson on that absolute punk classic "Alternative Ulster" by S.L.F.?
Amazing. East Bay Ray is one of my favourite guitarists and this always makes me think it's from a banned HB cartoon , Thelma goes on a killing spree or similar.
Carlos Cadona wrote and recorded that for the first Dead Kennedys record. He probably taught east ray to play it. He was only in the band a few months. A lot of people forget about him, but he was the best guitar player they ever had by far
I found your channel looking for tips on learning triads and your I IV V vid was amazingly useful.... now I see you're doing East Bay Ray - you just got yourself a new subscriber. Really awesome channel, thanks Adrian!
Holiday in Cambodia is such a fun song to play. Good choice. "Ill In the Head" is one of my favorite DK songs. That has some extremely bizarre guitar work in it. They were a great band.
That made the old Punk hairs stand up on the back of my neck alright.Such a classic and beautifully executed.Adrian is "your go to" if you're a guitarist who craves those alternative/punk gems.
This vid is brill, thank you! This was a song that always stood out to me with its increadibly unique guitar work, had never heard anything like this before.
that slide freakout at the end was amazing! awesome as always, song choice, playing and instruction. would love to hear your take on anything by the wipers / greg sage or any of rick froberg's projects if you're looking for ideas..
Man great job. There is only about 3 youtube guitar channels I trust when it comes to learning songs quick and your one. I been playing since 90 or 91 but I dont always have the time or patience to figure stuff out myself do thanks for your great work man.
Outstanding. Once again your taste in tracks is unparalleled. East Bay Ray took punk and surf music and melded into something unique. He doesn’t get enough credit as a guitarist imho.
Adrian, you are amazing! I feel so different from everyone about the things l like until to know your channel... DK is my favorite band and thanks to you l play this song ( very often now, by the way) after to watch your video about one hundred times! Thank you so much! I also play Moon over Marin, but l swear ld like to see a video from you! Thank you very much and keep doing what you do, please! It is a great pleasure to see your videos, my favorite RUclipsr! Cheers from Brazil!
Adrian, thanks so much for this! I have only just discovered your video of it. I knew I'd requested it, but didn't know you'd come up with the goods! Brilliant lesson. Now, if that isn't motivation to pick up my Strat, I don't know what is!
Thanks for playing. Lots for influences as you said and as I can hear as you pointed them out. 2:21 has a retro-surfing feel and the chord change at 2:38 Sounds like The Ramones Pinhead Its only when you hear only the guitar it comes out. Cheer
Fantastic. Saw them twice in 1980 - Jello stage-diving all over Nottingham and Sheffield. Still as enthralled by this song as I was then. You’d be spoiling us if you could do California Uber Alles!
Excellent, thank you! Would love to see some more DK lessons! Love your channel, everything from Devil Got My Woman to Mystery Train to Holiday In Cambodia. 🤠
File under weird coincidence: I watched some DK footage of this song a couple of weeks ago on RUclips and thought: :"there's some nice guitar work on there, maybe Adrian would do a lesson on this?". I didn't suggest it, because I thought it might be a bit too punky. Now, here it is!! Great work! I'm now thinking about Felt - Ballad of the Band...
A track that's too punky for me surely not?! Yes, I'm not super familiar with Felt but have had a few other requests. I'll check out the track you mention.
1979. East Bay Ray wailing as Jello spits beer back at us. Maybe 80 in a basement. Somewhere I have a cassette of that show made with a mic taped to the ceiling. Glorious.
I must have watched the first 4.5 minutes of this video a dozen times, your play through is epic. Did you know the song before learning it? It’s an absolute banger.
Oh, this video sent me to my punk cd collection and the one one I dug out first was the Bad Brains, Banned in DC. Maybe there's some material in that one for you to explore for the future? The song I for example 👍🏼😃
Wow, that was excellent !! You're a MASTER Adrian. Those lessons just make me wanna learn to play guitar. I listen to the Dead Kennedys since the 90's. I actually play bass and recently learned to play "California über alles". I definitely encourage you to create "anyonecanplaybass". It really impressive how you always perfectly nail the song of a song. This puzzles me !!
“If you don’t mind, I’m going to indulge myself...” you go right ahead sir! That was magnificent! Thank you for another incredible lesson.
East Bay Ray was top punk guitarist. Really unique style. More Dead Kennedys lessons!
"is"
@@station2station544 "was" if you've watched it 😂
@@garethbruce6475 Just saying Ray ain't dead and he's still rocking! :)
East bay ray and captain sensible were the best punk guitarists.
@@world964 Totally agree with you.
People often forget the influence of surf and garage rock on the riffs etc of Ray and other punk bands (boomers lol). Thanks for bringing attention to his playing.
I swear I could hear the Pol Pot Pol Pot chant coming from somewhere.
Brilliant Adrian, I used to play 'kill the poor' in my school band, I am 55 on the 12th, I loved theDK then and I love them now. Cheers, I really appreciate this.
57 and I wanted to learn how to play this since I first heard it , would love Lets Lynch the Landlord lesson.
Thank you. Andy. Oxford - UK
I can hear a lot of Dick Dale in Ray's guitar.
East Bay Ray had some top riffs. Thanks for the lesson.
He sure did!
You have the most chill way of teaching the song. I love learning tunes from you!
Always loved this song but the way you broke fown the guitar made me realize what a great guitarist EBRay is. Underrated even in punk circles.
I like how the cats in the background are fist-pumping to the music. DK are now considered "classic" punk ...I feel so old.
ha ha, you are right!!!🤣🤣🤣
They've been considered classic punk
@@hellrose18 I always just called punk, punk, a few years ago is when I first heard the term "classic punk" and I was like "wait, wtf?".
You don’t get much more classic than the kennedys.
East Bay Ray is old enough to get social security. You are old.
The DKs actually played at my high school under another name in the early 80s. Didn't last long before it got shut down, but a fun memory nonetheless!
🙏🙏🙏 Thank you, thank you! A native Californian here...a teen in the early 80s. East Bay Ray was a standout of the era...no other California punk matched this. Following you on Patreon too and love the diversity you bring.

How about Police Truck?
Hardcore surf guitar.
Yes, I nearly went for that one, so good! Maybe for my next DKs video...

Your song selection is outstanding.
You properly enjoyed doing that play through I think! Excellent lesson, I'm really enjoying it, thanks Adrian.
Hurrah, at last! Thanks so much Adrian, comprehensive and thorough as ever
Keep rewatching your amazing playing and tutorial here...nailed it as always!

So California sounding!! East Bay Ray such a great guitarist. Never fully appreciated him in the 80s. Fantastic lesson!! Thank you!!!
Holiday in Cambodia is such a fun song to play. Good choice. "Ill In the Head" is one of my favorite DK songs. That has some extremely bizarre guitar work in it. They were a great band.

Your videos are so entertaining that even though I don't have my guitar with me right now I still watched the whole lesson
I had never thought about a Syd Barrett influence in his playing before, but it's definitely there!

Superb channel, Adrian. You blow me away.

Yesterday I was searching for a good tutorial for this song and today Adrian posted the best... GREAT!
Magnificent. Both the writing of the original part and your playing of it.

Love this track. Time to put a battery in the ol' delay pedal, and get a shot glass out of the cupboard :)
Thanks for playing. Lots for influences as you said and as I can hear as you pointed them out. 2:21 has a retro-surfing feel and the chord change at 2:38 Sounds like The Ramones Pinhead Its only when you hear only the guitar it comes out. Cheer
brilliant song choice as always! great lesson and cover my friend! east bay ray clearly one of the most talented and original punk guitarists.

Probably not in the Khmer Rouge era!
Excellent - one of the 1st guitar parts I learnt after Stuart Adamson's stuff
Fantastic!! That whole album is just brilliant! :)
Love the slide action! Killed it!

East bay is underrated he’s a genius
A top job, well done and thank you for sharing!
That would be a great song to play in a Cop Movie!!! Played before the movie starts. Reminds me of that song from Hawaii 5-0! 👍🏼

Well done! I’ve wanted to get this one under my fingers for a while. Thanks
You certainly nailed Ray's tone.
absolutely phenomenal

Really an outstanding explanation!
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!!
Great playing and teaching. This is an awesome tune.
Absolutely awesome. Great job.
