The smell is referring to death/dying/burning flesh. If you'll notice in the live concert footage from '77 when they sing this song, Ronnie's (lead singer) attention is focused on Gary Rossington at many times during the song.
It's really really hard to choose a favorite Lynyrd Skynard song because they never fail to deliver. All are 🔥 but, of course, favorite performance is easy for all us LS fans. The guitar solo of Freebird in Oakland is legendary. I know you saw it early on & were a little taken back. Freebird, they say, is like rolling a boulder up a hill and letting it free fall down the other side. I think you should rewatch. The piano - the guitars - I feel like you'd appreciate more now.

Cousin bought me Street Survivors when it came out. They never made it to where I lived on that tour. My cousin also passed a few years afterwards. So, that whole lp means a lot. Great songs, too.

Not sure but I think it was a day or 2 before our planned sleep out that we got the news of the crash. I had already bought 2 copies of the album the day it had been released... One for my cousin. He's gone now, but this song was the favorite Skynyrd tune for both of us... Still got the original vinyl with the first released cover in flames.
And that's Steve Gaines on that first beautiful guitar solo. He was killed in the plane crash along with his sister and others 3 days before this album came out, October '77.

Most of the band were in the age range of 24 to 27 during this time. They were settling down, and trying to clean up their lives. They were still kids, basically. Unfortunately, the same year of Gary’s car wreck, the plane crash occurred in October, killing Ronnie (lead vocals), Cassie Gaines ( backup vocals), Steve Gaines, one of the three guitarists(Cassie’s brother). They are an awesome band.

As many others have said, this is about Gary and his bad accident, but it's also about Allen Collins' accident that killed his girlfriend. I heard people say it was a "drug" song and they wouldn't listen to it. If they had actually listened to it, they would realize it's an "anti-drug" song.
Allen was in an accident the same weekend as Gary, but it was nowhere near as serious as Gary's . The accident you're talking about was in 1986. It left him paralyzed and he was never able to play again. He died in 1990 from pneumonia which was a complication of the paralysis.
Used to use drugs, and when I got high, there WAS a smell in the air that I only noticed when I was intoxicated. It was my signal to STOP. Glad I listened to that signal or I might not be here today. Now, I am free of all illegal drugs and never want that gorilla on my back ever again! Peace!
This song and another by Molly Hatchet made a big impression on me. I refused to be in a vehicle with anyone who had taken a drink. Even my mother. I'd been to 15 funerals of kids I knew who died in cars, motorcycles or just overdosed before I was 15.
I had a good friend who cooked his own hard and would play this song as he used. This song takes me back to those moments. Sweet smell of the soft and grass mixed together and smoked. Smh
