The dude playing drums is still alive.
But apparently this isn't the "original" band because this drummer isn't the original. He didn't play with the band in the 3rd grade.

Drama, Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song about Gary Rossington, the Guitar player, A True Story, This is about the smell of Death, Unfortunatly i have seen Many Many People Drinking Whiskey at Skynyrd Concerts, They took the Song and the Message the Wrong Way, Gary is the Only surviving member of the Original Band, Gary was loaded driving his New car and hit a Oak Tree, Crashed, It is lucky he survived, the words are all True Man, This is the First only Anti Drug anti Driving Drunk song that i know of, If you really listen to the words you will see, Ronnie was a songwriter of the real things in life, R.I.P. To All, Rock On, Cousin Figel

This album was the pinnacle of Skynyrd's discography of which there are many great albums. There is not a weak song on Street Survivors. Unfortunately we lost the band shortly after the release of this album. Oh what could have been. If you love the guitar work of Steve Gains, check out "I know a Little" and check out his band Crawdad which he headed prior to joining Skynyrd.

Nothing against Free Bird (I love Free Bird), but this is my absolute fav Skynyrd song: , the message, the background vocals, and the guitar work on this song is impeccable. I think you might have missed the point though, it wasn't glorifying drugs, it was anti-drugs---"the smell of death surrounds you".

I’m almost jealous that you’re getting to discover this music and it’s new to you. I’ve heard this all of my life. I’m so glad you’re discovering their music. BTW, been praying for you and your family. The song is written about one of the guitarists, Gary Rossington.

Not just Gary Rossington but Billy Powell crashed the same weekend and I think they both had new cars both were busted up but Gary's crash was much worse, this was in the prime of their fame and I would guess that they had just gotten some big paychecks henceforth new cars drugs and alcohol.

Glad you liked it, but I think you missed the point of the song. It's an ANTI-DRUG and drinking song, it says that if you take another toke, stick needles in your arms, it very well might kill you. Take one more drink it'll drown you. It's saying don't do drugs. The music is great, as to be expected from Skynyrd, but listen to the words. Thanks again.

I love to see the appreciation from the younger generation. That speaks volumes of how good Skynyrd was! You hit the nail on the head. We’ve lost the art of making great music.. This song is from their last album before the plane crash in 1977. It’s an anti-drug, anti alcohol abuse song. Ronnie is singing about the smell of death that gets around. And you can hear him acknowledging that he’s been there! Great job!

The guitars are great in the way they wind in and out of each other, support and back and then go solo, a staple for southern rock. Allman Brothers did a great job of this too.

They were singing about the realization of drugs and alcohol, they were sick of being sick and it was time to stop. Some of them were starting families and didn`t want the smell of drugs and alcohol around anymore.
They were growing up. Next do "Sweet Home Alabama", "Simple Man", "Call Me The Breeze" (live), "Tuesday Gone".

Steve Gaines was on fire. He 's the one playing the leads at 2:54 and 7:18. I've been playing since 1976. He's still one of my favorites. A 61 Strat plugged directly into an amp, no tricks. That Stat he used was up for sale at my Sam Ash in 1982. It was up for $15,000. If I would have known that the vintage guitar market would explode, I certainly would have bought it.

The song is about the smell of death hovering around Gary Rossington (guitar) with his abuse of drugs and alcohol leading to an automobile accident. Ronnie was trying to clean the band up after years of drugs, alcohol and violence giving then a reputation. This song along with songs about guns and homelessness show a more tender side to the band and this fact is often overlooked.

This is awesome! And yes sir, you've missed a lot , but you are here now. Heard this song many times over the years. Told my wife about it 10 years ago and she never heard it. "ooh ooh that smell"

One of my all time favorite songs. I recommend this often but no one ever listens to me.
Bought this album a few days after release. ( Yeah with the original album jacket that got changed after the plane crash) still got it.
Was planning on seeing them at the time but the crash was just a few days before the tickets went on sale here.

You have the fever my friend! Nothing great after this album due to the crash in 1977. Do T for Texas from the One More From the Road album. That is their best live stuff. Keep on doin' your thing!

These guys were never playin', even when they were off the road and at home. Like 'em or hate 'em, their songs were their lives, and they never apologized for that, no matter what the cost. And goddamn, did the cost get high. 💔

Fantastic reaction to a great, great song with lyrics about where the abuse of alcohol and drugs can lead:
    Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you.
    🔥🎸🎸

Ronnie & Allen wrote this song about Gary after Gary's latest wreck at that time caused them to postpone tour dates. They were referencing his drinking & drug problems...(as well as their own). Prince Charming was also referencing Gary.

Next to Freebird this song is second to none when it comes to guitar work. If you don’t get hyped up listening to this then you are dead inside to music no matter what genre you follow most.

This song is about one of the members of the band who was in an accident from drugs and alcohol. It was a wake up call for him.

Great reaction!! This is actually an anti-drug song. They saw what was happening to them and other bands around them it was time to quit that stuff. “Gimme Back My Bullets” and “Gimme Three Steps are two you should check out!

That song was written after Gary Rossington was drunk and high and crashed his car into an oak tree. Ronnie wrote it as a warning to the band members because they were getting deep into that lifestyle. It was release on the Street Survivors album . 3 days after the album was released the plane crash happened

The song mentions all the aspects of a rock lifestyle....its truly about one of their guitarists who started getting too hard partying and came close many times to dying.... that smell is the smell of death

Nnh, we want you to be you brother! Your reactions are always spot on. The "flavors" of Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet are damned slicy right. They straight up assault your ass with their brilliant guitar playing while telling the story of the song.

Some of the lesser known but great songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd whiskey rock ‘n’ roller is one of them I love that song also down south Jukin. I know a little is a fave also. They are in my top three favorite bands is a devastating to think what they could’ve been if the plane crash hadn’t happened in 1977 and I highly highly recommend if you have showtime looking for the documentary on the band it’s fantastic
And here’s the thing over the years other members have died other members have joined I saw them three years ago on the farewell tour with Marshall Tucker and 38 special And it’s like listening to the album they are a tight band for sure

Reacting to skynyrd, Allman bros, and Marshall Tucker would give you a good foundation. Fun fact - some feel that Duane allman playing as a studio guitarist on Otis Redding's cover of the Beatles Hey Jude was start of southern rock. May want to check that out

Always liked that song. It was a good discussion about the partying that was going on in the entertainment business. This song, and Saturday Night Special were both social commentaries.
