*the COMPROMISE I'd like to see...*
I'd love to see mini-PC's (including Apple M1) that are structured like THIS:
    a) Main hardware on BOTTOM as per normal, and
    b) MIDDLE layer is basically a heatsink, and
    c) High quality, large, slim fan (120mm?) on top that blows DOWN and EXHAUSTS out the four sides (or just three to keep front free)
(this would be a lot SMALLER than the fanless but could still be configured so the FAN is turned off most of the top and barely audible in max load because sucking in the cool air directly and shoving out out the sides is super efficient for cooling, especially if you have sufficient heatsink mass)

These Akasa cases are really neat. I had 2 of the Plato cases a couple years back for the 7i7 and 8i7 nucs. I wished they used heatpipes embedded in the case to spread heat out more quickly. Otherwise you get the really high bursts of heat like in your example. It's interesting that this case doesn't use the case lid for cooling the nvme ssd like the Platos. I wonder why they didn't include that in the Turing design.

  • @photonboy999

    *Heat vs "heat energy": terminology*
This is just a nitpick or constructive criticism:
The word "heat" is often used as "temperature" however it's also used to describe the "heat energy" (same as power drawn) that a computer dissipates. These are NOT the same thing. So many people use the word correctly at times and incorrectly at other times. If you spread the HEAT ENERGY over a larger area with a passive case then the HEAT ENERGY removed is still the same. The TEMPERATURE of the hot spots goes down though as "temperature" is essentially energy density measured... I would suggest saying "temperature" and "heat energy" and just try not to use the word "heat" at all by itself.
