Franks RC Cars - In this video I unbox and review the new Traxxas Rustler 4x4 VXL. I also discuss some problems that I had right away after driving this vehicle the first few times (lower shock spring clips, stripped spur gear, drive shaft failure, bad factory glue job on tires). Then I do some road testing, drive it up a tree and chase my dogs around.
Despite the initial problems that I experienced with the new Rustler 4x4 VXL I think I'm gonna love this ride. Be sure to buy lots of extra spur gears in advance. And don't forget to check the motor position often, as mentioned in the video.

I running a 3s 5000 in mine 4x4 rustler and man its fast with it and on my 2wd rustler vxl I put on a slash bumper on the front and willie bar on the back to but nice trucks tho☺☺

I just bought mine and noticed the motor mount screw was loose. Luckily I caught it early.
Ill tell ya what i tell everyone about that rustler 4x4 vxl. As a person who prefers 1/8th scale i didnt really think much about it. But i wound up getting one to give as a gift to someone. They didnt really want to mess with maintenance and lipo and all that so i got to keep it. Now heres the crazy part, it quickly became my second favorite truck. Its ridiculously fast and with just a little bit of aftermarket darn near indestructable. If you do manage to break something your out like 3 to 5 dollars. I own an xmaxx and honestly the rustler gives me more fun. Only car that i enjoy more is the Kraton 6s but come on its insane.

Don't use the self righting system. That will kill a spur quick. I've been told by a few different people not to use it.
It's better to use loctite on set screws
Also, look at some videos on how to set gear lash. It may be part of the reason you're eating so many spur gears. Landing jumps on full throttle will also shorten the spur gears life
Thanks for the advice. I got it all worked out since then. Everything was loose on mine for some reason, all good now tho. And I totally agree on throttled landings ;)
I'm interested in why you trashed the spur gear… You should not be replacing them often. I mean especially if the slipper clutch is set properly. I just bought the car and I am not going to expect to replace spur gears. I'll come back if I do and eat my words but I think if the cars set up that should not happen. You should be able to use the spur gear until it literally wears out then of course the slipper clutch can not even save it… But yes definitely do not put in steel. I don't have any experience yet but I plan on getting some shortly. But I have run the Emax and never had problems with spur gears. … Alignment has to be checked from time to time but the new guide template used in mine there's no way it should be able to move.
Honestly I was pretty hard on mine right off the bat so it was probably my fault. Going full speed then breaking, spinning and then full speed again will certainly chew them up. Just for future reference, if you upgrade to any aluminum parts you'll start chewing up spurs and axles very quickly.
@@FranksTechHelp I understand the importance of what you're saying. I don't plan on doing any aluminum upgrades the car should be plenty strong as is… And I also believe the plastic spur gear can last because as I said I had the bigger Emaxx… I will admit I ran that vehicle 2×2 cells but the spur gear lasted forever no matter how hard. Three cells could make all the difference but I still believe in that slipper clutch. But your video was nice and it's so cool that you responded to me thanks… I'm only going to be running my car 2 cells will not for seeing too much trouble. Keep up the good work
Frank what’s up with the overly loud clicking of my gearing? I’ve tightened, loosened, drowned it in lithium grease just to try & get it quiet for late night speed runs down mainstreet. Click click is loud as hell when it’s dead quiet outside
I drilled a hole in the spring cups and used a tiny zip tie to hold them to the springs

I just lost my spring clip today, had to steal one off my Stampede. But that is a good idea with the glue i need to do that now.
Good stuff to know..the spur pinion alignment is also critical..iam gonna be running proline road rage tires pre mounted..gens ace 5000mh 2s.50c .hopefully the spur dosent become an ongoing issue
Lossen your slipper clutch if youre roasting spur gears
Thanks for the tip. It turned out to be all of the loose linkage and slipping screws. Got it all worked out and I've been running the same spur for almost two weeks now.
I just got my son 1 of these and the body keeps popping out of the front bracket it popped out twice in 15 minutes of light driving.
Yeah mine didn't start doing it for a couple of days but it's fairly common.
Mine didnt Come with the other battery option:( is there a 1 and 2 gen ?

Yeah I totally agree. They are too busy trying to mass produce these to worry about quality control I suppose :( For the price I expected a little more. But on the overall I'm not completely disappointed. This thing still kicks arse and takes a serious beating.
Alot of slash 4x4 will fit this. Like axles, a arms, hubs, c blocks and lcg front bulkhead. I have a RPM front bulkhead from a slash 4x4 on mine. So you can get 17mm wheels for a slash 4x4 and they will fit on this.

Uthe gear mesh is pre set u took it out of mesh that's how u stripped the first one

Does we have to buy the battery and the charger separately or are those gonna come with the box?
they come with no batteries or charger I would reccomend the traxxas 2832X (3s 5000 mah lipo) and the traxxas ez peak live and another thing is the orignal traxxas batteries dont fit and the new traxxas batteries also dont fit you need the very new short batteries

I wanna buy the Aarma Kraton but in Puerto Rico there's not spare parts 😔 so i have to buy a traxxas 😏 what should i buy. The Slash platinum or the Rustler vxl 4x4.
In Puerto Rico the spare parts for traxxas are all over the island. Aarma only online, and almost all sellers do not send to PR

Yes, I love mine but you can get Aarma for cheaper from what I understand.
im not happy with the turning , ive drivin my neighbors ofna 4x4 and it hits donuts and turns on a dime, and i just cant get the rustler 4x4 to do it, not stock atleast
I agree with you. The rustler vxl 2wd actually turns very well. The 4x4 isn't as forgiving but it is 4wd in the end. Also make sure you adjust your TSM knob on the remote. Probably just below 50% if it won't turn well. I had to work with mine a lot to tweak it the way I wanted it.
Definatly turn down ur tsm to 0

Hello I’ve had mine for 2 weeks now and I’m running stock with the 3s LiPo and it over heats within 3-5 minutes of play and goes into thermal shutdown I have tried loosening the slipper clutch but still gets hot straight away I’m going to buy a fan for the ESC and a 2s LiPo but not impressed that it over heats so quickly on 3s does anybody have any suggestions as to why it’s getting so hot so quick??
Get an aftermarket clip on fan for your motor, it helped mine dramatically.
The traxxas rustler is not durable! If you are using a lipo 3 cell you will break something every time you use it. Shocks, spur gear drive shafts
Why are you comparing the rustler 4x4 and rustler 2wd? They are two completely different chassis. Lol. Let's compare a Ford mustang and a Ford Fiesta.
The self righting doesn’t work all that well on pavement either. You have to have a basically fully charged battery and even then it sucks
NY DUDE u just need the high speed gearing but probably wouldn’t put that on bc this thing gets blazing hot without a heat sink without the high speed gearing so probably wouldn’t want to put it in just for self righting
