I have a rustler 4x4. Not vxl. But I did all of the vxl mods. Velineon motor, 3s, 14 tooth pinion, big bore shocks, heavy duty suspension upgrade, aluminum center driveshaft, upgraded steering servo, aluminum adjustable camber arms and steering arms. Thing is a dream. I got some amazon big bore shocks and they just sucked. Finally ordered the traxxas big bore kit and noticed that the spring rate wasn't quite enough for the truck. Luckily, traxxas sells higher spring rates. I ordered the +20 and +10 springs and ended up using +10 in the rear and +20 in the front. Makes a HUGE difference. It really depends on your driving style. If you like to bash and hit massive jumps, get the higher spring rates. If youre mostly doing small course and street, keep the original spring rates. I love how tuneable the shocks are and the seal in them is absolutely fantastic, you get accurate dampening based on your oil weight. Hopefully this helps anyone trying to choose what they want to do. Enjoy!
I also have the big bore shocks. Love them, no more caps popping off, no more bent shock shafts. Traxxas should have had them on the truck from the beginning!
@@connivingkhajiit once you start beating on them, they slowly fail, for normal, not so stressful, small jumps,, speedruns, off roading, they are perfect.

Air compresses. Oil(as well as water) don't compress; they 'hydraulic'. I'm running Mobil-1 75/90 synthetic gear oil in my standard 4X4 VXL shocks as well as differentials and it works superbly in both applications. The car handles GREAT and the diffs put the power to the ground. And at less than $10/qt you can change it as much as your OCD needs.
I have two and bought two more for my grandsons for Christmas, these new Rustler VXL 4x4s are amazing. The only upgrade I have done to one of them that seems to make a big difference is a set of ProLine Thrashers. It depends on what you do with it, the stock tires work well but the ProLine helps get the other over heavy grass, just much better traction.
Nice man, I ordered a rustler and a maxx this weekend mostly because of your vids. Definitely gonna order the big bore shocks to swap them out right off the bat on the rustler. Keep up the great content.
To me... I think the big bore shocks offer great stability because it gives you greater control with the larger shock as a whole. But the 60 wt. Oil, in my opinion, offers greater dampening. So I am observing the machine appearing to bit hard on a landing die to greater dampening , and also observing greater stability due to the same spring load, however greater dampening. Try it with 40 wt. With the larger shock for greater stability and durability, increase the wt. By 10 and it will increase the spring by decreasing the dampening effect slightly. Or keep the 60 wt. And it will increase stability for drifting and racing although maintaining the same spring effect as stock.i think the weight oil drastically changes effects after drops or jumps. And adds stability operating everywhere else.
I question how much of this difference has to do with the shocks themselves. Other than being aluminum rather than plastic they are almost the same as the stock ones. This difference is likely down to thicker oil.
OMG this made my day!! i was thinking about my RC car that i bought 10 years ago and i bought new alu shocks for it and they were so lose and i was like what a shit type of shock is this. And now after watching this vid i realised that there was no shock oil in it hahahah
I can definitely see the difference, probably because I experienced it myself with gen1 ERevo. The stock setup is really plush, it's very funny while learning and you still go kind of slow in 4S, but for the 6S I switched to the stiffer springs and heavier oil. I can see a very similar behavior here. It turns out with time I would not mind going back a bit for a more plush setup, but not as plush as stock. I don't jump too much and I like to see the suspension arms moving. Just the looks of it, not for the performance

Don't say it " works great " and that you bent 3 out of 4 shocks the first time you drove it. LMAO. Worked HORRILBE> that 80 weight shock oil is why you bent your shock shafts.
Just a tip.. compress the shock right as you tighten cap. Tightening with piston extended you havnt bled out what the piston rod displaces.. effectively hydrolocking before end of travel
The fluid is a dampening medium, to slow the compression and rebound of the shock rate. Thinner fluid allows faster compression and rebound as thicker would slow it down. Over bumpy terrain the thinner oil would make your shocks like a basket ball and thicker would make it pack down to the point you would lose vertical travel in your shock.

Outsourced RC went with the big bore kit & 60w from Traxxas. Moved shocks up and down & waited for no air bubbles. We weren’t getting rebound on the front at all. I moved the bottom positioning in one screw hole & added a spacer to each front shock. Helped a little but not what we were expecting. Not like yours
@@dividendminer Take the spring off, compress the shock. If it doesnt come out about half way on its own, something isnt right.
Outsourced RC I’ll do that tonight, thank you for your help
Is this something i should think about changing out to Aluminium shocks instead of the stock ones that come with this???
What else did you do other than the shocks?
Caps and cylinder of these shocks are plastic or aluminum ?
I like your ramps. Didnt really see the difference
Thanks. Its hard to tell really.
Please get the Arrma Granite or Big Rock Crew Cab BLX
Thank You ! what I am saying
Did you change placement of top and bottom mount holes or keep stock position? I upgraded same shock and weight but mine is very bouncy on the landing.
Same holes. I'm not sure why it would be bouncy if you used the same oil that I did. Thicker oil will reduce the bounce.
Outsourced RC i stand corrected. I have the GTR with 50 weight. Had them tightened down a tad too much for the 30 degree ramp you helped me build. You have me wanting to get Revo. I have 1 question- is it that good with stock parts? I have Russ 4x4 maxed and I don’t want to have to upgrade everything from the jump this time around.
@@kevinbenson2402 The E Revo does need a few mods like Limiting straps and servos. Its great once you get it set up.
Outsourced RC ordered it Sunday along with the straps and aluminum brace. Last one in stock can’t wait!
I wanna get some 50w for my Hoss but i dont know what to do. I hate how big jumps make the chassis slam the ground. I want the stress to go on the shocks rather than breaking more parts on it. Im trying to turn it into a jump car. What would you recommend?
Sometimes you cant avoid the chassis hitting the ground. Just set it up with thicker shock oil and soften the landing best you can.
@@outsourcedrc Thank you. I just got 50w so Ill be trying that. I did a decent drop test and it works pretty good. I love how you can change the performance on Hobby grade rcs. Love your videos man. You are so friendly.
@@docedits7294 Thanks! Its just how I am.
Is That Stock Esc & Motor? Also What Size Battery Are You Running??
yeah its stock. The battery is a 3s
I just got new aluminum caps... they are blue!
Me too I got the blue ones they work great 👍👍
I like what is on your avatar 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🚘🚘🚘
triangleswinger RC do you have a channel?
@@caris2893 no but I do put some videos on Instagram, I need a better camera to do RUclips but me and my friend have talked about it lol.
@@caris2893 my Instagram is @stpack83 I just put a couple more short videos up today👍👍
ive already had to buy more wheels and tires for that thing because they got unbalanced are you having that issue ?
You should’ve kept the normal shock the big bore shocks just made it hit th me ground harder and they also make you wheelie everwhere
How long do u run your rustler before the motor heats up ? Im getting 25 minutes of usage before the motor is hot.. is that normal ? What can i do to make the motor be cool more time ?
I dont run it hot. I've only had ti run hot when I put the 17t pinion and ran it in grass. Is that what you are doing?
@@outsourcedrc i run it on grass.. as well as dirt and cement. And i have a 20 pinion.. Since i dont have a temperature gun. Is it normal for the motor to get hot with only 25 minutes of using the car ?
@@KusshLover323 with a 20t pinion, yes. you will run it hot like that. That is a lot of work on the motor.
How full should you be filling the shocks with oil?
Do the Traxxas Big Bore shocks come with aluminum caps?
Bas ass simple wooden block. Diggin it.
can I put 100 weight oil in shocks for my rustler 4x4 VXL so it will rarely bottom out?
Is this your own rustler? What car do you like most the rustler or e-revo?
Yes this is mine now. I dont know which I like more. They are both so much fun but very different. I might have to say the Rustler if I could only have one of them.
Outsourced RC What would you recommend them for (in what cases is one better than another), and Durability wise, how do they compare?
@@tiberiocellini3641 The Rustler is hands down more durable and reliable. The E Revo does stunts and tricks better, is quicker, and is faster. The E Revo 2.0 is a lot more espensive also. I might do a comparison video for them since so many ask me this question.
Outsourced RC Thanks! Have a nice day
What spur and pinion gear do you have in it. And what kind of battery
Its the stock gearing and the battery is a Venom 5000 mah 35c 3s
Any pre-load spacers? Might help with slammage on big jumps
I use 8mm preload front and rear on my BBs
Great video and I have subbed to your channel
Thanks!
Is that 60 weight on front and back?
Yep
I was wondering do you have a rustler vxl 2wd or just the 4x4 vxl?
Just the 4x4
