- The time has come! Time to take our freshly rebuilt and now option packed Traxxas Rustler 4x4 VXL project out for some fun! First up, we take the RC truck over to a long straightaway for some high speed runs and show you what the telemetry peak speed hold readout looks like on the Traxxas Link App. Then we take the Rustler 4x4 VXL out to a few off-road locations for some all out bashing fun. The truck gets dirty, the truck gets beaten up and in the end we go over the parts that were installed and determine if they were worthy upgrades.

If you run in an area with various sized 'stones' as is the featured construction sight in this video I recommend installing the front suspension arm protectors found on the Traxxas 'Stampede'. I don't have the part number but they're $7.00 and they guard the bottom front shock mounts(2 or 2.5mm Hex heads) against being hammered by stones while also creating a protective 'ramp' to absorb and redirect direct impacts to the suspension arm by vaulting the car over the top of the encountered obstruction.
I have also found that fitting an elastic surgical/food preparation hair net ($8 to $12 for 100) over top of the electronics and center driveshaft(a cardboard cover should be folded/shaped to keep the hair net from entangling in the driveshaft) keeps sand and stones from galling the living hell out of the drive shaft while generally keeping the chassis appreciably free of debris.
Like your passion dude. You've inspired me get off my ass and swap the ESC in my V4 Kraton lol I've been putting it off for too long
Build, bash, crash, repeat!!! That beast sure can take a beating!!
I had R/C 10, R/C 10 L on road kit back in the 80's n 90's & I recently bought a Traxxas Rustler 4x4 VXL n I absolutely Love It! Broke a shock 3rd time running. I bought n installed the adjustable aluminum shocks n the 17 tooth gear that came with the kit n WOWZERS! This thing is FAST! Thank u for the review.
Looks great .. looks like a slash lcg under the skin .....love the look of all the bright orange...
Always cool when you find out in a video that one of your favorite RUclipsrs is running em 20 minutes from where you live.
I am a new subscriber and new to the RC world and I have to admit that video was really good. I just bought Rustler 4wd 1/10 Scale And I notice you have the same one so this video is gonna help me out a lot. My Rustler Has a brushed motor .I believ It's the basic 4 wheel drive version but I really like it right out of the It's the basic 4 wheel drive version but I really like it right out of the Box. But I will take your advice and do exactly what you did I really love what you did to that Truck. Thank you for sharing that video what thus that helps us newbies out.
That thing is crazy fast!!!
The Rustlers are cool, with that said I don't have one, but won't be long, I'm gonna pick one up....cool vid, and great build...
Its good that you showed what parts broke in the end. Nice video!
OHhhh good old faithful Rustler. I been buying Arrma's lately but took My Rustler out after giving her a bit of a rest after some upgrades. I had some run, Such a smooth easy to control little truggy.
It's great that Traxxas supplied all of those parts because they would easily double the price of that Rustler = $800.
2:16 why'd u have to change your jeans to shorts for the 3S battery street run? do shorts make it go faster?
He was leg shamed as a child
It was probably warm out and he wanted to change I don't know why its that big of a deal for you lol
@@matthewkruk67oh yeah its a really big deal.
Perhaps his pants were on fire?
Do a project car on the Redcat Volcano! like all aluminum, castle/hobywing, shocks, tires, body, gears, and similar to the rustler 4x4 build!
That was awesome!!! 👍👍👍
Great vid and review on the Rustler 4x4. I'd like to see how it would perform on the track for some club racing with some track tires on it. I'm not a basher but I like the styling of this truck versus the ET410.
I got some fairly expensive 5th and 8th scale cars but i still keep running the rustler, its just a fun little truck
In my opinion the tekno driveshafts are the best. Tried and tested standard design and easy to install. Only problem is that don't work with traxxas aluminum but in my opinion the aluminum isn't necessary at that point. Also some tbone bumpers to help keep down the scrapes and up the durability.
wow thats like a dream speed run road lol.
I love ur rustler it looks so nice
Great video and the orange looks good.
I like your videos, very nice
I have a 2nd gen and my box and book have 20/54 is the highest recommended gears. You said your documentation has 17 as the highest gear. What else changed between the 1st & 2nd gen vxl 4x4? I thought it was just the battery strap.
holy shit is that bethel bmx? i run my slash there all the time! Feels weird randomly seeing a place near me on youtube
Same
awesome video brother!!! I gotta get me a rustler, keep trying to make the wife understand that I "NEED" a rustler, you know, if I don't have a rustler, then I NEED a rustler;) but I her defence, she has let me get 2 trx4's, an axial scx10 ii blazer, a redcat gen8, an axial wraith 1.9( just this year so far ).....AND for father's day she got me a Tamiya monster beetle that I'm painting today.....so I guess I can't complain................I still say I need a rustler thou, that is the most important thing right now, all that paying bill's and feeding the children stuff, that can wait, ooooooooooh yaaaaaaa
So nice bash!
What are the names of the places that you drove your rc cars at
So from my understanding you can use this in any car doesn't have to be all Traxxas electronics id really love to set up my Tamiya TT02 with a TQI set up in it, it all ready has a TQ radio in it but just the basic one just wanting to know so when I do start throwing money in to this I know what I'm getting can't wait to get some TLRs nobody would expect that
Epic!
did you swap the springs ? or did it come with black front and rear?
Sorry I must have missed it… can you share a link for the arms you have used?
I think I recognize that track from another RUclipsrs videos
So cool wish I could have one
Great video 👍🏁
The Rustler 4x4 vxl is definitely one of my favorite 10th scales I own to bash around its a lil beast!
I have the rustler 4x4vxl and i have to say the upgraded parts and all the support from trxxas and poof one of the best rc out there
Do you have a list of all the upgrades you did. I have this truck but I have 2 issues. I keep blowing off shock tops and at 40 mph sustained the truck like shimmies left and right. Being unstable like that at higher speeds I haven’t geared it for 60+. So I’m thinking your non cosmetic upgrades may help keep it steady at sustained high speeds. Btw, trencher tires with raid wheels. 2.8
Awesome video! Love this car! I’ve been shopping different rc cars/trucks for the last month and I can’t make up my mind on my first lipo powered rc car. My budget is $400 or under for a rtr vehicle. I would love a recommendation from you out of a few I’ve picked out. I’ve narrowed it down to the Losi Tenacity T (I’ve watched 2 of ur videos on it a ton of times), the Arrma Senton BLX 4x4 3s SCT, the Traxxas Rustler VXL, and the Arrma Granite BLX 4x4 mc. PLEASE HELP! 😫
Traxxas Rustler hands down. I beat the piss out of my bashers.
Fantastic !
Hey Rich awesome video the truck looked great and ran great and it was fast on the street! What pitch is the Robinson? Do we need a 32p pinion and what size shaft mount size would it be? Gonna take my brand new rustler 4x4 vxl our for its first run today found a really good spot for it. I have down a Tbone Racing front bumper, body roll cage and skid protector as well I upgraded to the aluminum caster and steering blocks, Traxxas blue wheel nuts and wheelie bar wheels and esc cooling fan. My next upgrade will be rpm arms I think. Just trying to make it as strong as possible.
Dont forget the change that platic bearing in the slipper clutch and u would be great and to swap out the greese in the diffs
The stock arms have held up just fine for me. but the stock shocks however, not so much. i upgraded to gpm shocks, with thick shockrods and bent one on the second run from a less then stellar landing but not that high of an impact. also have gpm axles and they have held up so far. broken stock wheel hubs and caster blocks which i replaced with rpm and have proven functional. I feel like this car is too heavy. metal shocks and axles didn't help in that department. To me, this car is too fragile because of the weight. next time i buy an offroad monster truck kinda car it will likely be the tekno mt410. Its lighter than arrmas at least. and built from the same parts as their pro racing cars. replacing shocks and axles all the time gets expensive.
How much does all the upgrade parts cost in total
What brand of c cups and a arms f/r? Thanks.
What battery are you running? My Traxxas 3s 5000mah doesn't fit in the Rustler's tray
Awesome, do you think that the rustler 4x4 is as good as the Arrma Notorious or Outcast?
I have the outcast and when it comes to speed par to par, the only thing i notice is that traxxas has a better range and the arma doesnt have great range when it comes to arma rc, just putting it out there
You really can't go wrong with either. The Rustler is really designed for beginners where the two Arrmas are more for more experienced driver's. Still would be fine for beginners as well, but are more complex built than the Rustler.
No who want complex vs something that is easy to work on and plus traxxas has way better support and 3rd party parts all over the place , and the best selling rc cars are traxxas rc, and for a real reason, again arma are good but that range issue cant be fix unless u ditch out more money and as far as speed i own a e revo 2.o and the rustler and the xmaxx there are no arma rc better, now for speed i just bought the arma infraction lets talk!
You should put the 540 xl motor into it
You should do a project on your losi baja rey
What's a good motor swap? I'd like to see 90 of 100
MAMBA XLX 2 1/5TH SCALE SENSORED AND WATERPROOF: 166 mph For 1/5 scale rc car
very very nice car❤❤
It looks good though
How much run time are you getting per charge? And what battery are you using? 3s 5000mah?
The new arms are the stock ones but white
I changed my rustler to a 22 tooth pinion gear with 4000mah 3c lipo and got it to 105,73 km/h 🌚
Hey Just wondering But where Is that track located?
What gear did you use
where you buy the tires from
Do you have a shop in CT?? Use Danbury but it’s a drive every time I need parts.
just subscribed 👍
Is it worth while to do all the aluminum aftermarket mods? (planning to keep power stock, maybe metal gears)
I personally don't think so. From my experience, you can get RPM caster blocks and hub carriers that are pretty good and cost a lot less than aluminum.
I would probably get the aluminum bearing adapter and maybe the aluminum motor mount and call it good there.
Where do you get your colored wheels for the Rustler?
Would you be able to give a total cost?
ceramic ball bearings last longer than stock bearings. js
Hey man do you know what the whole build price was not including the car would love to know thinking about saving up for them thanks man!
Was that really 44 on 2s... just looked slower. When you showed the app, the mph did not say "GPS", so I think the system guesses based of the gearing it thinks is in it. I say this because I have the module in my maxx, and the GPS signal is lost at times.
It's doesn't guess, it calculates. There is a magnet pickup on the spur gear, counts RPM. It's know gearing ratios because you select what pinion and spur you are using through the app, tire size as well. It's just math.... Science!
If your vehicle goes airborne while still on the go trigger, yeah it will not be an accurate max speed as your wheel will be spinning much faster than if on the ground. Other than that, it's accurate.
@@Jremo1979 a calculation is just an educated guess. Lol. I forgot about the rpm sensor so that definitely helps. And as long as the link app had the right info put in, it is fairly accurate. By no means am I looking to argue with anyone. That just didn't seem to be 44 mph to me. Looked closer to 25. Greg, can you help us out? Lol.
I just keep watching. Haha. It might be 44. Maybe I was just tired when I watched. And the camera view makes a big difference. A little further away will seem slower.
Just bought one of these it's my first rc car what would you say is the first upgrade I should do
cream8701 the problem is they like to over heat on 3s when driving on certain terrains. For $400 they should’ve be doing that. You can get a Arrma granite 4x4 lx for $100 cheaper and it won’t over heat on you. Plus it goes 50 mph right out of the box!! Trust me its a much better value.
Redcatracing new short cross country truck bad
I just ordered a new one 👍
Cool! Have fun!
How’s it straight out of the box? I’m think about getting this or the maxx
Where are you located my friend
If you don't want it anymore. I'll gladly receive those new shocks. PlZ ;)
Like the build. Building rustler 4x4 myself. Im local to you and going to have to check out bash location.
Hey buddy I ordered one of your shirts on the 13th do you have any idea on how long it takes to receive those. Thanks alot for doing what you do. Your channel is freaking awesome
RCJer Whoa! Thank you. I think it takes about 2 weeks. It’s all handled through Tee-Spring and they usually send updates. Thank you so much for watching!!
@@rcdriver ok awesome thanks alot buddy.
Looks a bit 90s! :p
The only thing that looks weird is the white suspension arms. But other than that, I think it looks awesome
are the suspension arms aluminum?
What size pinion gear were you running in the off-road portion?
Jason Gerdeman Stock 13
@@rcdriver I was just looking the manual, and the pinion size for off road, extreme terrain is 9 or 10.
I loved it . Great
Pls give me one rc
First
yea right that traxxas speedo is a liar lol..put a gps on it and run it again
I got 61 on a 17t pinion, stock. 66 on an 18t is entirely believable.
Abuse a truck like that and things are gonna break.
piece of shit I broke basically every part on the front end and servo just driving this in front of hose total money pit I wouldn't buy a traxxas again obviously engineered to break
Can you please donate me a rc car.
no he will not :D
