Poundland solar garden light hack.

  • It's easy to change the LEDs in most solar lights to your chosen colour. I recommend the straw hat style LEDs that you can find on eBay in packs of 100 or more. Putting two in series widens the range of colours you can create and gives an interesting effect with the crackle glass lights.
    Here's an eBay search link for the LEDs:-
    www.ebay.com/s...
    Note that unless the driver has an extra diode and capacitor the RGB self cycling LEDs may not work.
    If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.co...
    This also keeps the channel independent of RUclips's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

      Might be interesting to mount the LEDs further apart, or (if that little cell can provide the power), have three in series - R, G and B. That would be quite psychedelic, Man!

      Phil S it actually uses slightly less power with 2 leds in series. R, g, b, leds would be good.

    Man, I am getting very old, I can feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes, but I just gotta go back, Wwwaaaayyyyy back to the 1960's to say "dig it! Man that is one cool light, why it's outta sight, it's all right, " gonna have to make me some of them for our RV and around it when we head back for Arizona come fall! Yep, even with the ooops in the middle, a very cool conversion, you are indeed an artist in your own right!

    That would be a good application for color changing LEDs. I like to couple them because the colors change at slightly different intervals which results in endless combinations of colors that change as the cycles progress.

    • @charliedobbie8916
      @charliedobbie8916 6 лет назад +1

      Low voltage LED devices will typically switch the LEDs on and off rapidly. This causes a colour-changing LED to keep resetting its cycle, so you only get one colour out of it. You can fix this with a suitable capacitor to hold the voltage high enough to keep the chip running.

    • @thewolfin
      @thewolfin 6 лет назад +2

      Cold white is nasty, dunno why it's even a thing. To me it's like "Hard" toothbrushes. Pretty much only detrimental, except for alternative purposes like cleaning. Blue light has negative effects on the circadian rhythm, will give you insomnia - part of the reason doctors advocate an hour or so of LCD screen abstinence before bed.

    • @SproutyPottedPlant
      @SproutyPottedPlant 6 лет назад

      Wolfin I often end up with the hard toothbrush ☹️ many lovely lighting designs seem to be ruined by the use of cheap angry blue LEDs including the common durable low cost rubbery torches I am fond of. Luckily there are still Incan versions so I can drop in a module with a better LED. If I had Clive's skills and dexterity I would modify all my torches.

    Interesting mod. I've of seen strings of identical LEDs, as many as a hundred all in parallel across a circuit that looked just like the circuits in one-LED solar lights. Hadn't thought the voltage was adequate to drive more than just one blue or one white LED. It would be interesting to apply a scope to the power going into the LEDs.

      How about using those automatic fading LEDs, not sure if the pcb would be able to work with them. But if you put a couple of those LEDs in the dome it might get interresting once they start going out of sync

    • @awmperry
      @awmperry 6 лет назад +1

      Charlie Dobbie - Exactly the effect I'm talking about, but with this crackle effect. And, as I say, three LEDs to maximise the colour variation.
      Jay Herde - the key would be to have the dome rotating relative to the LEDs so the pattern changes rather than just turns.

    There is one thing you also should have done. I have done mods like this myself.. And one thing I always found is the battery drain became an issue. So I remove the generic battery which you will find are usually about 1000 mAh and put in around a 2000 or 2100 mAh NIHM battery. Now all my lights last all night without dimming at all. Prior, they would run out of energy before day light turned them off and started to charge them again.

    I would say that you need to string several of these lights (not necessarily on the same circuit) (meaning also lights from other vijeos) together for a vijeo..

    Clive, have you ever seen the 3 volt wet cell D size batteries used in some European equipment as memory/programing back up?
    I took one to bits (use caution) just because I was curious, and everything metal within a four foot radius corroded. No, I did not spill nor spray the liquid about.

    I just noticed you’re not using that little spiral notebook anymore. That seems like some sort of a minor milestone to me, for whatever reason.
    I may watch too many of your videos too closely, upon self-reflection.

      Self-reflection, i.e., introspection is a vastly underrated skill. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it's actively discouraged.

      Normal service will resume in due course.

    Last year Poundland had solar lights in the shape of a lightbulb. They had a short string of LEDs, the kind that has SMD LEDs mounted straight onto copper wire, covered with hotglue.
    I bought several that had 1 of each colour of LED red, green, blue and warm white. A couple of them came to an unfortunate end during the exciting weather we had a few months ago.
    So I bought replacements...Oh dear god no! The new multi-coloured ones have 4 horrible flashing colour chaning LEDs. While they are truely horrible, it's very impressive that you can make a colour chaning led that small (You just shouldn't)

      I've got some of the new flashing ones. They are a bit vigorous.
      The lights tend to get thrashed to bits on branches in storms, so I recommend securing them with rugged wire.
      They also benefit from clear outdoor tape across the solar panel and a 3mm hole being drilled at the bottom of the bulb to allow water to drain out.

      Hi Pook,
      I did exactly the same but am really delighted with the new ones. ( I followed Clive's advice re tape and drainage hole, plus put vaseline on the threads with the original ones and they are still going strong after more than a year)
      I was thinking of weather proofing one of the new multi colour ones and secreting it up in the branches of a tree in the local Heathland ( Dorset ). Should cause a few double takes and perhaps a few new UFO sightings ;-)
