I definitely like the longer videos. It's fun to see how your mind runs from one idea to another on a given project.
As far as "grabbing one before bed", I let Clive playlists run as I drift off to sleep. Weird though that may sound, your voice is incredibly soothing.

Same here. I'm here to watch Clive say what he wants to say, not to watch _n_ minutes of content.
Some stuff is simple enough that it just doesn't take that long to go through, and not having that stuff on the channel would be a loss. It's much more comprehensible to looky-loos like me. Longer videos with more complex technical detail are soothing AF, even if I don't really "get" most of it. And for people who _do_ understand, that kind of content is really valuable.
I also really enjoyed that video where he actually filmed the process of assembling the board and used the time to tell a few stories and answer questions. Kind of like the recent AvE video where he was talking about random stuff while reassembling that Makita drill.

I prefer the longer videos that contain interesting anecdotes or information about components. I love to hear the history of how certain things in the electrical / lighting fields came to be. An occasional silly video or something like the MREs is fun too.

  • @thatsunpossible312

I think you do a pretty good job of judging the right length for a topic. Sometimes I'll wish for a little bit more detail, but honestly it just gets me Googling and that's what the internet is for. Sometimes I do like your assembly videos - very zen, even if they are long and repetitive. But I'm also glad not all of your videos are like that. I actually really like the variety of your channel... never quite sure if we're going to see a relaxing video of you assembling some random kit, taking us on a tour at work, or doing something that will alarm your neighbors. Don't you have a video of launching a full soda can through your ceiling?

I like both, honestly. Sometimes I do just want a “grab one before bed” video of just a few minutes, but I also love the longer more technical videos. They’re all quite inspiring, both for actually digging into electronics work and for buying irresponsible amounts of various lights to do things with.

  • @PIXscotland
    @PIXscotland 6 лет назад +10

I prefer technical video's that are a decent length for the material covered. Nothing worse than cramming things in. Anything from 5-15 minutes are good for when sitting at the PC (about 10% for your videos not on Patreon), but the longer ones are fine for TV-replacement viewing.
Most of my viewing is done on the PS3 RUclips app that has no access to YT text/annotation/cards/commenting so embedding useful info is best. Follow up information in another video is also preferred for that reason.
Getting close to the 100M views. Looking forward to something special!

I prefer the videos that start with something simple and then have that wonderful moment when you say "You know what? I could just do........ " and you do it. Much better that some RUclipsr's videos where we get, a synopsis of what's going to happen, a discussion of what's going to happen in detail, watch it happen and then a review of what happened. There is only so much you can say about 5 components being fitted and it doesn't take 15 minutes, but then I think there may be a sense of, the more videos, the more revenue. Fortunately this is not something we get with this superb channel.

  • @AtticusGrim

Videos of the correct length for the subject matter, and correctly paced... which yours always seem to be! That’s the key really being able to maintain audience interest, and so, in that respect, it is essentially irrelevant how long the video is. As a result I didn’t vote. Thanks Clive!

to be absolutely honest your voice, candour, and video content is like a lullaby. I always make it to the end of the video but by the end, I'm much more relaxed and I fall asleep much quicker. I never started by watching your video before bed, but now I tend to. I like the longer videos because from day to day the enjoyment and relaxation may take awhile. Shorter videos I find myself watching 2 or 3. Longer videos no more than 2. I've learned a lot, and actually have recommended the channel.

You know, people might like the video with the thumbs up regardless of how long they want videos to be 😅 for me I'm more likely to watch something below 20 minutes, but I've also enjoyed a bunch of the longer ones, but I'll be harder pressed to put one on. If nothing else I'll watch the disassembly and maybe skip the rest unless I'm hooked 🙃 That said, not quite sure of what is considered short or long now, as this video was quite quick indeed...

In fact I just got my first cheap YIHUA 936B + components and kits from Ebay and will soon pop my soldering cherry; none of this would have happened if I hadn't discovered your channel and became fascinated in hacking/modding electronics.

Clive, They're all good! Shorter, longer, they are enjoyable. But like others have said, you do have a very calming and soothing voice so anything over like 40 minutes or so would be getting me close to sleep. There are times when I just want to sit down with a coffee and some cookies/biscuits and enjoy a long video. Then there are times when a short video to fill a few minutes before bed or work is great as well.

  • @calyodelphi124

I honestly like a mix of both shorter and longer videos. The longer videos are excellent for more technical analysis of stuff, because there is a LOT that can be learned in that time. I have you to thank for helping me to somewhat more intuitively understand switch mode power supplies. Flyback type supplies with their feedback coils are still a bit of witchcraft to me though but at the very least they're not completely indecipherable witchcraft now.
I also love it when you just goof off and screw around at times just for dubious and devious giggles. It's a much needed bit of respite when you blow shit up, and you somehow still manage to make it a learning experience when you do! I love it.

I was browsing you videos, refreshed, and a new one was there (made public) 20 sec ago, thanks Clive! Regardless, for video length, I'd say videos between 10-25 minutes are great. Longer might get dragged out (depending on the subject, of course). Shorter might just be, well, too short to really gather attention to what you are showing. My opinion and all that. Have a upthumb.

As others have said, a mix of long and short seems healthy. On the whole, personally, I tend to prefer reasonably long videos (between twenty and forty minutes, say). That said, surely the length must ultimately be dictated by the subject matter: one of the advantages of RUclips over traditional broadcast television is that there is no need to fit a pre-arranged ‘time slot’. In any case, your videos are always enjoyable. Keep up the good work.

As i see it , length of the video pretty much would depend on how involved the subject/project at hand is .
This video covers a fairly simple circuit/premise ... enough information is included to keep most neophytes from letting loose the magic smoke .
Personally , I feel that you have a pretty good balance . Perhaps the addition of a couple of two or three part projects/analysis might be beneficial for those individuals that might be considered slightly more advanced than the "beginner" .
As far as I am aware , your channel is along the lines of how myself and others got involved with electronics ... we found someone that knew about such matters and hung out , working together on projects (one of my good friends when I was in my 30s was a retired broadcast engineer) .
The bit you do with your friends and brother add another dimension to the channel ... making it more personable .
Keep up the good work .

Some stuff just demands a 30 minute long painstakingly detailed autopsy while other stuff can be done in 5 minutes and not missing anything important.
So i think as long as nothing interresting gets cropped away or, even worse, a video gets artificially stretched to make it to certain monetization marks, i think all video lengths are beautiful :)

I love all your videos, long or short, I think the variety of running times is good as it is. :)

The video length REALLY DEPENDS.What are you doing? I like videos that are packed full of information, if they're long, that's fantastic. This one was short, but full.

I prefer a variety of both longer and shorter videos. They all have their place.

Definitely long videos. (Recently they seem perfect, not too long) but also like the occasional short one.
