Make a DIY flowing crystals lamp. (Gillian's diamonds.)

- This project happened unexpectedly when I discovered that the high optical purity plastic diamonds that are scattered on tables at weddings have a surprisingly low density. This means they can be used in a carrier liquid based simply on salt and water, and made to flow in the convection current created by a low power lamp.
It's been suggested that bleach may have a frosting effect on the plastic gems, so a strong fungicidal additive might be better for keeping the liquid clear. Perhaps boric acid?
A useful starter ratio for water and salt are 10 parts water to one part salt by weight. This has worked with the eBay crystals linked below.
After the lamp has fully heated up add a pinch of salt to make them float and a splash of water to make them sink. Have patience as fine tuning the liquid density is important for the best effect.
Here's a general eBay search link for wedding scatter crystals like the ones I got from Poundland. I've since tried the iridescent coated crystals from eBay and they worked fine. I've got some different colours on order but they've not arrived yet, so I can't say if mixing colours will work yet (possible different plastic densities.)

The dedication is to my mother who passed away a few days before I came up with this idea. She was a strange lady with lots of weird quirks, but also an incredible knack of doing the right thing. She encouraged my interest in electricity at a very young age by showing me how a torch bulb could be held across battery contacts, went to a career show with me and got the contact details of the company I ended up doing my apprenticeship with, and is the reason this channel exists because I set up a new bench (with camera) when I moved over to help my brother look after her.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of RUclips's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty. Наука
Sorry for your loss Clive. No one ever loves you like a mum and I hope if/when the time comes I can be as caring and dedicated as you and Ralfy and I'm sure it was an enormous comfort to her, to have people she was close to and trusted, care for her.
Sorry for your loss, the dedication it takes to care for a family member with Alzheimer's is a accreditation to your mom on how she raised you.
I can relate to this (though in our case it wasn't really upbringing, but nursing experience of my mother).
I can only hope I won't develop dementia or Alzheimer's should I get old, because the vision of being such a ballast is too much...
+RicoElectrico my mother died of it last year
Wish you and your family members all the best in these times.
Great lamp, and a wonderful tribute.
A fascinating video, and an elegant tribute to your mother. Thank you.
Another good video, and I'm terribly sorry to hear about your mother. I hope you won't feel pressured into making videos, if you'd rather take time to yourself and Ralfy
It's been a strange week, but it feels like a weight has lifted off our shoulders now.
bigclivedotcom I know that feeling. Its a very mixed feeling when someone you love who has deteriorated to a poor quality of life finally goes.
bigclivedotcom such a beautiful project that you dedicated to your mom. Thank you for sharing and I'm very sorry for your loss. Your mom must have been an incredible person to have somebody like you.
I lost my mom last year to pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer's. I live in Upstate New York and my parents live in North Carolina. I made two special trips to spend a week each time to help my dad with my mom. It was very painful to watch my mom suffering and what my dad had to deal with. Hospice was a huge help for my family and especially my mom.
Take care and hope that all is well with you and your family.
bigclivedotcom My mother died last August. She'd vascular dementia and hadn't been herself - literally - for some time. You're right, it's a source of some very mixed feelings.
bigclivedotcom that’s part of what my sister and I felt when my mother died last August after a few years of increasing dementia and declining health...
Sad news, but a relief for all involved, I am sure. You and Ralfy are a credit to her memory. Dementia is a terrible way to end a life, as I'm sure many here know from first hand experience.
Rest in peace, Gillian.
It's a huge relief. It went on for a very long time.
My thoughts are with you both.
Condolences to you and your family, Clive.
I started watching/listening to your videos as a comfort and to add a friendly voice in the house as i work on consolidating things after I lost my partner of 26 years in January (2019) This one brought me to tears as it hit me again that he was gone. Thank you for your videos and your stories of your mum. I hope some day to build this project and have it in his favorite colors as a memorial to him.
Very sorry for your loss. Glad she had her sons with her, comfortable at home.
Sorry to hear about your mom. I'm glad you had Ralphie around.
A window sized panel of suspended diamonds in a dark room would be frikken magic.
Respects to you Clive and Ralph.
I thought about something like that (not with diamonds, but liquids like a lava lamp). The problem is that the pressure at the bottom of a, let's say, 1m tall panel is so high that you would need really thick glass (1cm thick and more) for it not to bend and break. Ask anyone who builds aquariums.
All the videos you've talked about her, it feels like we know her a lot more than we do. So sorry to hear about your loss! All the best wishes to you and the rest of your family! Thank you for another awesome video Clive, again, what would RUclips be without you, really empty!
Clive I don't normally leave RUclips comments, but really enjoy your videos and wanted to send my condolences to you and your brother.
A loving supporting mom is a wonderful way to start life. My mom always encouraged my tinkering and this led me to a life in computers. You and your family are in my thoughts.
She must be proud to have a great son like you. Sending you my sincerest condolences and well wishes.
In this case even plastic Diamonds become pure! Thanks for your wonderful video and dialogue. You have moments of dear Robin Williams. Your intelligence and wit made my morning. Have a great one.
Deepest condolences about your mom. So glad though she got to live life her way. Thoughts to you, your brother and other family.
So sorry to hear about your mother, Clive. Such a lovely dedication.
I lost my Dad when I was 16, my Mom when I was 18. Took me years to realize how deeply it affected me. Hold onto the good times, my friend, and a big virtual hug from the US.
RIP Gillian... You are with all the diamonds in the sky now. And you've left two wonderful ones on Earth. My respects and love to both of you for having done your duty in caring for mum. God Bless.
If the internet shut down today and we had to go back to reading books, I would hope you go into audio book reading as you make everything sound so interesting!
but u would need Internet to down load it!
We would have to all go retro and go to one of those shop things :D
Audio books can be had at the book store or the library. :P
They used to have these plastic sound recording discs called CDs. (Or if you're all out of lasers you could publish them on phonographs. :D)
@@Platypi007 A lot of audio books came on compact cassettes, in large sets sometimes.
So sorry about your mother, Clive. Best wishes to you and Ralfy.
So sorry for your loss, but what a glittering tribute to your Mum. Your diamond may be gone, but the memories live on always.
Very sorry to hear about your Mother.
What you and Ralfy did for her was special. At home, in your own bed, comforting and familiar surroundings. A job well done, you two. Few parents are lucky enough to have children like you two.
My parents are both recently gone, its sad and lonely. Good luck, and well done.
Sending you a man hug from Wales pat on the back and that .And this was a nice touch .

Sorry for your loss Big Clive.....We all thank your mum for your being here today and doing what you do.
I don't comment very often, but I think that was a wonderful dedication is to your mother.
Sorry for yours and Ralfy's loss Clive. We all have a lot to be thankful to your mother for. She didn't just help you get into your career, she has indirectly inspired thousands through your channels. My thoughts are with you big man.
So sorry to hear of your loss. I lost mine 13 years ago and I still miss her terribly.
My honest condolences for you and your family. Losing a mother is always a big spike which hits our hearts, but Clive keep your head up. Your Mum must had been proud of you, because every Mother wants a son like you.
You're absolutely right about early electrical equipment. I have a vivid memory from my childhood in the 1960s when our television suddenly started spouting flames and smoke. There was lots of shouting and then my dad came running into the room with a bucket of water which he poured straight over it...
Sorry for your loss bigclive. Thank you. She inspired you, and think how many people you've inspired. You've done her proud.
So sorry for the loss of your Mum Clive. Several years ago Ralfy did a short video with your Mum by the sea and it was delightful, his best as far as I'm concerned. She was a very sweet lady! Sincerely, Ossie
Condolencies and much respect. Tuned my lava lamp years back with food colorings, water, salt and detergent and a lot of faffing about. Feeling inspired to add plastic spacemen to it now. Keep up the good work - your mum would be amazed and proud.
So sorry for your loss. I really enjoy your videos and this was a most fitting tribute to your mother. All the best to you and Ralphy .
Sorry for your loss Clive. She raised 2 great sons in you and Ralfy. Wishing you and yours all the best in these trying times.
My own mother's passing a few years ago hit me hard. I still think about her all the time.
Sorry for your loss Clive, and all the best to you and your family.
This is a wonderful tribute, I'm sure she would appreciate it immensely.
Take care.
Condolences for your loss. As a mere follower, like the rest of us, I have learned only briefly of your mothers story and obvious struggles. At least she had two good son's to take care of her. Respect to you Clive.
Condolences to you and your family Clive. It's incredible to think how she encouraged you to follow your interests. Even though we barely know through youtube videos, we can tell she did an amazing job, as you are an incredible guy. An incredibly big hug from Argentina, from both me and the rest of the family!
Clive,
Sorry to hear of your Mum's passing.
My Mum died from terminal cancer just over a year ago and although she didn't have dementia her mind was severely affected for her final months and I found it difficult to see her as a shadow of the vibrant lady she was prior.
I hope you find some solace in the love and care both you and Ralphy gave to your Mum.
Your diamond lamp is a lovely tribute and a great idea - even if your Dad probably wouldn't have been too keen!
I would suggest using algea killer in large excess than needed. A 10ml bottle in an aquarium/pet store would cost 1 pound. The bleach could have some undesirable side effects, because it can degrade some (mostly ester based) plastics.
On another note, sorry for your loss, Clive. Best wishes to you and your family.
Clive, I'm very sorry for your loss. There's only one person who can fill that special place in your heart. My condolences to you and your family.
My condolences to you Clive. What a lovely way to remember someone. Thanks for sharing.
Sorry for your loss Clive.
I was waiting for the AvE comment at the start of the end segment... 'Focus you......'
What a fantastic tribute from a wonderful gentleman. Bless your heart
I wish you all the best in these times, and I thank you for setting up that bench and helping shed some light for us over the years.
Sorry for your loss Mr. Clive. A really fine tribute to your mother. Great video as usual.
Condolences to you and your family. Your mother sounds like a very special woman.
So sorry for your loss, at least she had people who cared for her greatly around her
Hey bigclive I took my ASVAB yesterday and scored a 97 on the electrical section. I have only you to thank for that, this channel is HIGHLY educational!
What a WONDERFUL way to remember you mother, I know what you are going through. I'll try and keep this short.Just take great pride and comfort in knowing that you and Ralphy did all that you could due to make your mother comfortable, happy and well cared for- That is what helps me get through the rough days. Sorry for your loss
Sad to hear about your loss, Clive. Especially from someone who always supported you and your ambitions. Life can be tough like that sometimes. I wish you and your family the very best, and remember, one is never truly dead as long as they're not forgotten.
Clive, I'm only a sophomore electrical engineering student, and your videos are a great source of entertainment for me, even if my non-engineering friends think I'm a little weird. My mother has been a constant support for me, and I wouldn't be where I am without her. I'm buying her a bouquet of flowers now, because your forward made me appreciate her even more. Thank you for the videos, and God bless.
My thoughts are with ya, Clive. I love the information you pass on. The videos you make to do so are the cherry on top!
Clive, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I am currently watching a friend of mine struggle with Parkinson's while his wife just got diagnosed with cancer in her lungs, spine, brain, and lymph nodes a month ago. I'm certain your Mom will still be "with" you and Ralfy, looking down upon you both with pride and love.
Condolences for your loss Clive, and thank you very much to the great mum who gave the world our favourite bear electrician
My condolences.
You found a nice safe combination out of readily available components for a DIY project. Thanks for sharing the idea.
So sorry for your loss. Thanks for the videos you brighten a dark world.
Very sorry for your loss, and your family's loss. From your videos I've taken you on as a friend who I bring into my home almost every day, and like you have an elderly mom. You have been an inspiration to me, I now fiddle with leds, own a soldering iron, a heat and glue gun. I will be making your kryptonite necklaces to be given out at Cherry's on Fire Island where my daughter tends bar. Thank you Clive. God or whomever you see as a higher power bless you and your mother. I shall light a candle for you, a led candle of course.
Sorry for your loss Clive. Your videos are great!
Sorry Clive your loss is one of the hardest. As I have watched the channel for some Time I know of all the little projects you and your brother did for her. My condolences to you and brother. And family.
I’m very sorry to hear that you’ve lost your mother. Condolences to you and Ralphy. You’re a good man, Clive, and the way you share your knowledge, curiosity and good humor with us is a tribute to the way your mom raised you. Keep your chin up, brother; you’ve got many thousands of friends pulling for you!
Random, floating, sparkles, like the magic that one finds in a mother's love. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Watched that last clip mesmerised! Wonderful tribute to your mother.
Very sorry for your loss, Clive. I'm sure it was a great comfort to her having you around.
Sorry for your loss Clive. I can sympathize with your mums desire to be at home. I'm back in the UK from Australia, because my mum is in hospital ATM and my dad and I are trying to get her back home for her last few weeks.
Clive I'm so sorry for your loss, I heard "dedicate" and knew what was coming.
She's free now, no longer reliant on others and constrained to an aged body.
So sorry to hear about your Mother. I know how it feels. But I love the imagery of the floating diamonds and thinking about the Love of mother's. You've brought a lovely melancholy for a few minutes. Love the video.
Sorry for your loss Clive. My thoughts are with you and yours. This is a beautiful tribute to your mum.
Sorry for your loss, great video and very special tribute! You started everything we see because of her, and now, with what you learned since then, you say goodbye. I'm really impressed, I really like this idea! Cheers man, wish you the best!
Awesome video Big Clive. Thank you for all your videos. Sorry to hear of your loss.
Sorry for your loss! Love the lamp.
I’m sure you can tell from all of the nice comments that we all really care about you, Clive. Keep up the good work!
Oh, I am sorry to hear that a tribute is due :(
On a lighter note, I now have the theme from Diamonds are Forever stuck in my head.
I'm sorry for your loss, I wish you and your family the best.
Only just watched this (Aug 2019) I saw one of your other vids on Gillian's diamonds and yesterday found poundland had some 6-8mm "diamonds" 77grams for a quid so bought some to make this lamp. My sincere condolencesfor your loss- I lost my mum to dementia in 2013 after 4 yrs of her suffering. I cant donate regularly but sending a fiver to you as you have helped no end in helping me understand electronics a bit more. Respect Clive!!
Thanks. It's very much appreciated. The diamonds I made the original lamp with came from Poundland.
My condolences Clive my mother passed away seven years she also suffered from dementia so I can appreciate how you must be feeling. Love your channel.
Thank you for all the happiness you bring us Clive, please know now as I’m sure you see that we are all thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.
I'm really so sorry to hear of your loss Clive. It's thanks to her that my favourite RUclips producer is here, giving us all so much joy watching your wonderful creations and easy to follow technical videos.
So sorry for your loss, sending love and healing thoughts to you and Ralph. I know what it’s like to care for a parent till the end, it is a blessing and most difficult at the same time. I’m sure it was wonderful for her to have her boys with her and know that she was so well loved xxxx
Sorry for your loss Clive lovely video
Sorry for your loss Clive, condolences to you and your family!
0:01 - 0:28 -- This section of audio *definitively proves* that Clive's voice is perfect for audiobooks or documentary-type narration.

Deepest Condolences. My dad was able to keep my grandpa out of the nursing home in his final days and it meant a lot to him and the rest of the family. I'm glad you were able to do so for your mom.
Thank you very much for yet another great video. Also, sending you and your brother my sincere condolences regarding your mother, who I am thankful for she contributed to the creation of the channel in many ways, and through the months and months of videos, we learned more about her.
Big Clive, you are an inspiration. 😌
So sorry to hear about your mother. This is a sweet tribute. Best wishes to you and Ralfy.
Sorry to hear about your loss, but what a lovely tribute to your mum.
