Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home takes MCU Peter Parker to a very interesting place as he faces off against Mysterio. Here's why I think it works so well.

what sold that scene for me was Peter's next line, "You can't fool me anymore." It's just the way Tom said it. It wasn't like a bond line. It wasn't matter of factly. It's said with a mix of confidence and sorrow. It's "I beat you, but I really wanted you to not be the guy I had to beat."

    • @Bad_At_Parties
      @Bad_At_Parties 5 лет назад +416

I loved that moment too. Spider-Man characteristically hates fighting his villains, as they are often people he either knows personally or wants to help. Peter's sorrow at being betrayed really underscored that central aspect of his character to always want to see the best in people, and being hurt when he can't help someone come back from the dark side. Beck felt like the next Tony Stark to him, and with Tony gone I think Peter unintentionally tried to fill that void with this charming, good natured guy he's just met because he was desperate to have Tony back in his life. That left Beck open to play him like a fiddle, and manipulate his emotions, which in turn taught Peter an important lesson about loss and trust.

    • @rainstrmds
      @rainstrmds 5 лет назад +16

@@Bad_At_Parties Mysterio didn't manipulate Peter at all. He just presented himself as an Iron Man level superhero. Peter didn't care about Edith and Tony's legacy. The glasses were lost on the dirty bar floor. Mysterio just asked Peter what he wanted. And he gave up the keys of the kingdom with super quickness. He did all the mental gymnastics required, offered the glasses as his own idea and with his own free will, then scurried off care free to be with MJ. Mysterio only conned him into thinking he was the real deal. Peter just was naturally inclined to dump his responsibility on _anyone_ who fit the description. Dr. Strange, Captain Marvel... Mysterio. This Spider-Man was super-selfish and irresponsible.

I was absolutely shocked by how good FFH was! I had low expectations for a movie that seemingly had so much packed into it, only for it to turn out to be fake, or a play at how "people will believe anything." The audience was able to feel what Spider-Man felt; his betrayal, and the feeling of being fooled. Marvel did an amazing job at tying the movie's message into the audience's experience.
    Now let's talk about Mysterio.
Mysterio is by far my favorite Marvel villain (if not my favorite villain in general). I don't know what it was about him, but Jake Gyllenhaal's portrayal of him was so incredibly and surprisingly satisfying. I left the theater feeling genuinely happy with what the movie had to offer, while also being shocked and excited about the post credit scenes. I'm not a comic book reader, nor do I plan to become one, but I know that this movie should've pleased most long-term Marvel fans. 10/10.

I’ll give you Uncle Ben, but in my opinion he’s the prime motivator for Peter BECOMING a hero, not the prime motivator in all storylines going forward. So it’s not necessary to have him in all Spider-Man stories. And he’s not proactive when he’s not in the suit? That’s just straight up false. There are a several scenes in Far From Home where he goes after things when he’s not in the suit. He pursues his interest in MJ tirelessly throughout the film. And if that’s not enough to be considered “proactive,” you could make the same argument about Tobey and Andrew’s Spider-Men too, btw. “They only react to the villains or the struggles in their lives”. So? That’s what most of us do, as humans.

The only one that he doesn’t is the Raimi films, which opted to COMPLETELY ignore the technological side of the character. Doc Ock LITERALLY designed peters new suit in PS4, and yet NOBODY complained about that the same way they complain about MCU Spider-Man. It’s this weird double standard about the MCU interpretation.

@@joeblaze2235 Idk really. I was hearing a lot of "I want this" instead of just accepting what we had been given. A lot of people compare HiTop and Midnight (more Midnight to be honest) to the Cosmonaut Variety Hour. He, apart from his controversial Raimi video that still has more likes than dislikes, has pretty agreeable opinions. He actually finds a lot of the MCU kind of mediocre, which I respect. He obviously has read his fair share of comics (not like the others haven't), and knows his shit. He said in his ASM and Spider-Verse reviews that he tries to look at things from a comic perspective AND a movie perspective. HiTop seems to be missing the mark a tiny bit. I watched his video (I cringed) and I couldn't quite put my finger on the point he was trying to make. I'm sick of "blah blah Raimi this, blah blah Raimi that". HiTop seemed to be trying to balance the two genres like Cosmonaut, but the scales kept tipping in one direction or another, both times being completely negative. It's hard to take seriously someone who doesn't know the point they are trying to make. Cosmonaut bases his reviews by saying what he liked, then what he didn't like. Not what could've been better (most of the time, but for REALLY shitty things he proposes better ideas) He then finishes his videos by giving a score, of which most of the MCU got like a 6-7/10. I watch and subscribe to people who cover all bases. I don't subscribe to people that are quite narrowminded.

There isn’t a single superhero movie ever made that is 100% accurate to the comic books. So what if his Spidey suit is high tech Stark equipment. In order for Spider-Man to do all sorts of different things with his webs (like he’s always done in comics) then it needs to be pretty advanced. And it doesn’t make much sense that he’d be capable of creating his suit without Starks tech. It’s not like he’s flying around firing missiles like he’s Iron Man... Mysterio is the best villain in the MCU. Change my mind.
Finally we get a guy who is just a bad dude. His motivations? Totally selfish. Caring about the people? No chance. Respect for the man who beat him? Nope, I'll get the last laugh.
Mysterio is a 'character', even as Quentin Beck. And that's true to the comics. He's larger than life because that's what Beck always wanted: to be seen, to be noticed.
And he's dangerous. Oh man is he dangerous. Accepting for a second the low odds of him fooling actual Fury, he still duped Talos, an actual shapeshifter.
Even after his position as a supervillain is revealed, something he was desperate to avoid at all costs, and arguably his greatest strength (his anonymity) was lost, he still manages to dominate spiderman in a fight by manipulating him completely.
Hell, even when Spiderman builds his own suit, comes up with a counterplan, takes Mysterio by suprise and even uses his most overpowered superpower to its fullest, Mysterio still wins.
Fight me on that too. Now Mysterio is known the world over as a hero. Spiderman is someone desperate for Iron Man's position, and willing to kill as a result, whilst being in control of the most military might on the planet. Oh yeah, and he's a high schooler.
It's everything he wanted. And he got it. Compare that to Toomes, who's still in jail. Mysterio is he villain who actually WINS.

With Spider-Man’s unique, yet highly underrated character arc within the MCU, it’s becoming more and more apparent how both those two films are heavily based on the early works of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man comics in showing the different phases Peter has as he grew up
In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Peter was still a boy. He’s already been through the major life-changing turn of events earlier that year such as the radioactive spider bite that granted him superpowers, and the death of his uncle due to Peter’s selfishness that haunts the shit out of him to this day and ultimately drove him to the path of heroism. But this time around, after his scene-stealing appearance in Civil War where he met all of his favorite superheroes for the first time, we’re exploring the life of Peter Parker and his overall character. He's going around solving low level crimes, he's immature, impatient, childish, and relatively new to everything. His double life as Spider-Man isn't dramatic, it's therapeutic and it’s comedic. He keeps losing his backpack, he gets caught in his Spidey suit, his shenanigans lead him to getting detention, and had his tech suit taken away, which is equivalent to a parent taking away their kid’s phone. The world is constantly beating him to his knees and his sense of self worth as a superhero is based on the Avengers (mostly Tony Stark). It isn't until he's in the rubble that he starts to look inward calling on his strength as Spider-Man to save himself because he isn't defined by a fancy suit, he's defined by his actions. It’s where he truly becomes Spider-Man
In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Peter is starting to fully transition out of boyhood and becomes a young man. He has let go of his first crush and has moved onto a new love he finds in MJ, not because of how she looks or vague descriptions of her just being "the best", but because he likes who she is as a person. He is now in a world where the heroes are scattered as the Avengers appear to be disbanded after the 5 year gap and the events of Endgame. But he's still trying to hold onto a few things by looking for some other hero to look up to so he can have guidance. He has grown out of his desire to be in the big leagues because he's seen the kind of struggle that brings, and his self doubt makes him feel like he isn't up to the challenge. He isn’t quitting being Spider-Man out of fear, he is just trying to remain the rookie he was when Tony first recruited him because the times were much simpler back than (we've all had moments when we wish we could go back to being kids, less responsibilities, etc). It isn't until he learns Mysterio is a fraud and is given words of affirmation from Happy regarding the pedestal the world (Peter included) put Tony on, that he rises to the challenge and proves his capabilities not only to others, but to himself. Happy basically explains to Peter Parker that the superheroes that he idolizes (specifically Stark) have flaws and imperfections as well. Tony Stark was flawed, fallible, and struggles with self-doubt much like Peter. The whole point of “the next Iron Man” thing isn’t for Peter to literally become Iron Man, but they want to make Spider-Man as popular of a superhero as Iron Man once was. Kevin Fiege is building Spider-Man up to be the greatest superhero the MCU has ever seen. Spider-Man will create a legacy of his own that’ll eventually overshadow Captain America and Iron Man’s legacies. That’s what the whole movie is about. Iron Man was the face of the MCU, and now Spider-Man is the new face of the MCU. He wasn't alongside other heroes facing the drone army, he was on his own, he used his own intuition, and his own natural superpowers bested upon him from that fateful spider bite to defeat Mysterio and save the day, reigning absolutely victorious.
From what we can see in this year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Peter's life is becoming more and more dramatic. The consequences he faces have gone from detention to being framed for murder. His double life is now becoming more conflicting as he tries to hang onto the few good things he's gotten (I have a feeling the end of the movie will have Strange complete the spell properly and the entire world forgets his identity, including his friends and Aunt May). He even starts to step away from saying "sir" because he is no longer the rookie. He has proven his worth and his place among the hero community, he is facing bigger enemies, and he is facing it alone (for the most part).
There is a clear arc for MCU Peter as we watch him grow from a boy to a (Spider-) man. And it’s annoying as hell when people call him “Iron Boy Jr” just because Spidey wasn’t in his prime (physically and mentally) immediately after becoming Spider-Man. While I disagree with some changes they made with the character, I freaking love MCU Spider-Man. His character arc is just awesome to me. Marvel & Sony are actually taking their time to develop their Spider-Man into the Spider-Man we know and love. And depending on how No Way Home performs this Christmas, we can be assured that his fun hero adventures will continue in his possible second trilogy.

That being said, he’s super nitpicky and enjoying his videos is such a hit or miss for me. His Far From Home video comes off more as someone who just wants MCU Peter to be a direct rip from the comics which was obviously not the case almost right away as he was introduced as a hero that is almost Tony Stark’s sidekick. Yet he still wants him to return to being a more faithful depiction but that’s just not what he is.
TLDR; Alex needs to learn how to have fun with a different take on the character.

I know that the MCU had to find a way to bring Spider-Man into the story and that he looks up to Tony. That's the problem, Spider-Man/Peter SHOULDN'T be like that. He shouldn't want to be like him that much and his entire character should not revolve around Tony. It does in the MCU, but it shouldn't.
I'd rather have neither. MCU Spider-Man doesn't get the character, and, well, I'm sure you know why I wouldn't want more Sony reboots.
Spider-Man is my favourite fictional character ever. I'm not going to settle for "it could be worse" with him. I'm not goign to settle for something subpar for anything for that matter. I think it's wrong to look at this from the perspective of "at least we're not getting the Sony reboots!". Also, it really doesn't matter to me if Spider-Man is part of a great franchise like the MCU (although I'd say that it's just good). The MCU can be, and has been, more than fine without Spider-Man. I want Spider-Man to have good stories without betraying his core aspects, I don't care if he's a part of a good franchise, if he's not what's making it good.

Dumb Spidey Fanboi well he’ll be independent in the third movie anyway. Kevin Feige already said the next films are 100% Peter focused. Also, Sony didn’t get Spider Man either with TASM series... Peter’s motivations for becoming Spider Man was to murder someone and they even betrayed the belief that anyone could wear the mask by saying that his dad instilled his DNA with the Spiders and made it seem as if it was Peter’s destiny to become Spider Man. Another thing to add is that none of the three live action Spider Men are comic accurate and are barely even faithful to certain aspects of the character. It’s just what you prefer at the end of the day, I prefer Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider Man over the other two but that’s just me.

@@madnizz1511 None of them are completely accurate but at least Raimi Spider-Man had the main attributes of what the character is about. He's not perfect, but there's no way in hell you can tell me that he's not a good Spider-Man in terms of accuracy. There are only a few things about Raimi Spider-Man that are inaccurate. And those things aren't even that important to the character (organic webbing instead of web-shooters, not cracking as many jokes although he still does crack some, etc. Stuff like that isn't incredibly important, it's the main traits that he needs to have, not absolutely everything ).
MCU Spider-Man, on the other hand is almost completely inaccurate. Almost none of his core traits are present, those that are are incredibly downplayed and in the background, and a lot of the new stuff added in goes against some of what the original character was about, like the superhero mentor that leads him down the path he needs to go on.
It's one thing to have a couple of inaccuracies, and another thing when your depiction of a character hardly resembles the original one, to the point where it leaves you wondering what the point of using this already existing and established character was, besides the increase in profit from using a popular character.

Something I think people need to keep in mind when criticizing that the MCU Spider-Man isn't the same as the Spider-Man they know from the comics or animated series:
    He's not supposed to be.
This movie isn't trying to remake the same 616-Universe Spider-Man in a movie. Technically, the MCU is another universe in the Marvel Multiverse, Universe-199999 specifically (Mysterio was technically right when he was bluffing about the existence of a multiverse, but wrong about which number they were in; 616 is the main comics). Which means that like the Ultimate Universe, or like any of the other alternate realities, it's a different take on the character. It's similar, and is based on the original version to varying degrees, but it's not trying to be the same. People didn't complain that the versions of Spider-Man in Into the Spider-Verse were different from the comics, because you understand that it's an alternate version, a character from another universe where things happened differently. Tom Holland Spider-Man is just as much an alternate version as Jake Johnson's version in Spider-Verse, or even Miles Morales, and I think that if people keep that in mind and don't worry as much about how it's bad because it's different, but rather look at how it's differences makes it interesting, they'd have a better view of the movie.

I think for character like superman, batman and spiderman, that have been interpreted in many ways, they have to keep it fresh and difference itself from another , it's not coincidance that we see different version of superman, batman and spiderman from comic version and yet they still have the core of the character and that's what i think what's matter the most.

The same could be said about many other movies. Batman Vs Superman, X-men Origins, Batman and Robin, Thor Ragnarok, Elektra. You can stray too far from the source, unless that means you are making a good movie. Dark Knight, X-Men Days of Future Past, Spider-Man 2, Logan. As far as I’m concerned, Tom Spidey is still being irresponsible, and he’s inaccurate to the comics.

I think this is the best Spider-Man movie so far. It's funny, serious... great villain, one of the best MCU villains of all times (Marvel really learned their lesson and is doing a great job with the villains now). It had me the whole time trying to figure out Beck, "Is he pretending? He looks so genuine. Maybe something will happen to make he evil?" and I loved the reveal. I loved the teen comedy/romance.
It had a similar beat with Spider-Man wanting to just have a normal life, Raimi's second Spider-Man had, but I think this was done better. Peter never actually threw away the costume so to speak... but was reluctant to being spider. Which I think is a better way to show that, than to make Peter walk away from someone being beaten to death.
And JK Simmons. It was the cherry on top of a great movie... with a great cliff-hanger. I like that secret identities are not that important in the MCU.

@CYB3R2K30 all of the movie is absolutely hilarious, and there isn't even Mr. Stark in the movie, he's already dead. Iron Man was an icon, one of the greatest heroes in the world in this universe, of course they're gonna have to deal with the repercussions of his tragic self-sacraficious death. Did you not watch the movie?
