Thank for this video. I'm shocked and saddened to see that this line was closed in 79 . Madness. 😨😢. I always assumed it must of been earlier. This makes it all the sadder
I was there 1976 working on the offshore pipeline positioning from St Fergus. 3x huge pipelines were laid 1973-78 . But the railway wasn't used to my knowledge for freight
Nice montage, I enjoyed that....recognised quite a few of my own photos, so I was bound to day that ;-) I'd forgotten about the 2002 fire at the engine shed. Glad to see it got rebuilt though and is a good as new today.
This is an excellent video and it will be enchrined in the history of the Broch with this very valuable photographic memorabila of what this important town has lost. Both Maud and Fraserburgh stations were filled with continual loads of large pipes for the supply of oil from Scottish waters to various locations in Scotland for processing including the large complex at St Fergus. The train loads were hugh and thus the network was very busy so no need to end the line at all but they had made their decission to end the line whatever and that was a criminal act as it also cost many jobs too.
If ever there was a criminal act committed against the North East of Scotland by political powers, this was it big time. An entire way of life was wiped out by some government office hundreds of miles away. It was insanity to remove the railways at the first stirrings of the oil industry in the North East. Although not all oil transport can go by rail and road transport is a vital part of it, the railways could have played an important part in transporting equipment and materials from ports to various transport centres which could have been built to suit. History has shown us that it was a big mistake to remove the railways in various parts of Scotland and the North East included has suffered ever since. There is a great need for passenger trains these days in the North East when we see the overcrowded roads which were never built to take modern traffic! Even with the volume of traffic on the Peterhead to Aberdeen road (now soon to be dual carriageway from Ellon to Aberdeen) it took them long enough!!!, it is unlikely we will see a dual from Ellon to Peterhead, a lot of talk but nothing will be done long term. These are just my opinions and probably not worth a lot! Have a nice day, readers!
Ludicrous the Fraserburgh line was finally abandoned as recently as 1979. As pathetically shortsighted as the closure in the same decade of the Penrith-Keswick line (1972) and the Alston branch (1976). Politicians really haven't a clue.
Disgraceful that the only 'plans' to reopen any bit of railway in Aberdeenshire consist of a tiny reopening of the section from Dyce - Ellon via Newmachar. Peterhead and Fraserburgh alone make the line a gold mine, not to mention the large settlements in the surrounding area. The Deeside railway should also be reopened, at the very least up to Banchory. It is pathetic that finally reopening Laurencekirk and Kintore stations is being heralded as a triumph. It is pitiful. The only thing the government can be happy about is that at least it has made some minor improvement, unlike the governments previously which have done nothing. All the money and infrastructure goes to the Central Belt and the South. Anywhere North of Dundee - even Dundee in fact - gets completely ignored. I loathe Beeching to the core.
Sadly this video is factually very incorrect. The passenger service finished in the 60's. A number of the photos were not takes on the dates showing either.

Bring back the railway no matter the cost. Somethings just don’t have a price.

And never will have a clue

The Beeching report was only a recommendation, the government didnt have to implement it.
wow amazing video, i would love to have seen that place in its hay day
I wonder where the engines in the broch went, scrap yard, preserved, bought?
The trains are awesome
My famil;y live in Rosehearty and the nearest train station to them now is Aberdeen 58 miles away!. So why did they shut this station?
OH NO 2002 fire
Don't quite see how this qualifies under category "Comedy". I find it quite sad.
No such place as a train station in the uk its a railway station.
