  • There are a lot of questions that come in that have to deal with various aspects of welding safety.
"Are the fumes that are created by welding hazardous to my health?"
"Can a regular welding helmet be adapted to include a respirator?"
"What are some inexpensive ways to insure air safety when welding?"
These are all questions that we get on a fairly regular basis, so we decided to contact ArcOne and get one of their new AirPlus Respirator systems. This is a simple powered air flow system that hooks into the back of your helmet and circulates fresh, clean air through your helmet while you are welding.
These are especially useful when you are welding on metals with coatings that have known toxins in them such as galvanized metals, cadmium and zinc plated metals. For more information on the ArcOne Airplus System, visit Weld.com.

my grandfather developed throat cancer after welding his whole career then in became colon and lung cancer. It seems pretty evident fumes from welding caused it. he always told me to not go into welding but I am my grandfather's grandson. thanks for the video and keep them coming!

There’s nothing wrong with welding. You’re ultimately responsible for your health and well being. As long as you take all the safety precautions, welding can be as safe as any other career. I’m sorry what happened to your grand pops man. But we’re in a day in age where welding has become exponentially safer than it was in the 70s and 80s. Protect your eyes, skin, and lungs and you’re golden.

Mr. Tig . . . I downloaded an article off the internet on something called Metal Fume Fever. It can make you sick and can be fatal! The article also recommends a helmet like you used or working in a well ventilated area. A fume extractor is another item recommended. Thanks for all the great videos!

Thanks for the demo on the respirator. New to me, sounds like a great idea.

This would probably be great to eliminate the helmet from fogging from your breath. It's winter right now and I'm having a hell of a time keeping the fog out of my helmet inside in my shop. Even though it's not freezing in the shop. it's probably in the mid 50 degrees f, cold enough to create fog inside my helmet from breathing.

In an age when employers do not provide grinders or disc, to do their projects, why would the welder depend on them to provide a safe air system that cost over $ 1000 each. As a welder that has worked 120 hours a week, what kind of respirator can a welder get to fit in a non air filter system that will protect them from harmful fumes?

Truth my man. Still so many employers don’t care about us welders. I can’t trust an employer off the bat to provide a osha approved ventilation system. A lot of jobs employers expect you, me whatever to provide damn near everything including clean air

I bought this system but I can't find anyone that sells replacement filters here in Toronto, Canada. Any suggestions?

I like the idea but dang this looks only reasonable to a shop welder. Ain’t no way the pipe racks letting you in with this. And is it even intrinsically safe?

Cost. This unit is relatively low priced to the competition, But most of it's competitors are around 2k for a system. This system is around 1k. I've had the chance to use 3m's speedglass before and it's almost like you don't want to take it off when you are outside. Buttttt cost.
