The mask is a life saver, i welded for years without one i am slightly concerned of any long term problems. The only bad part of the mask is when its hot outside.
Save up and get a lincoln papr. Cyberweld has them 500 bucks off. Its like a ac in your helmet and you dont have to work hard to breath in. Best thing i bought for welding. And the welding mask is dope.
3M half face respirators should not be discarded when they get dirty. You should read the factory instructions: remove any kind of filter that is on them and wash the face piece with warm water and a sponge.Obviously the filters are not washable. You do not have to throw them away, only the filters if they get dirty aka feels difficult to breathe in or could smell the fumes. 3M half face masks come with little "bayonet" twisting filters. Twist filter on or twist filter off.
I'm definitely not throwing mine away for no reason, these things are like $100+AUD 3M gives pretty simple instructions for cleaning them: Remove filters, wash in warm water with mild detergent (do not use any organic solvents or cleaners that contain oils), sanitise by soaking in dilute ammonia or bleach solution, and allow to air dry. Speaking of which; mine is dusty as hell inside and out so I should probably go and give it a bath 😅
Just a heads up most respirators come with a particle filter those will not protect from anything but, you guessed it particles (dust, sot and some liquid particles)so gases and most fumes just pass right thru so make sure that you get a gas/chem filter that is rated for the stuff you are exposing yourself to so do your material homework. As most(not all) particle filters are not gonna protect you from the common welding hazards like chrome, cadmium, lead, zink fever, hydrogen cyanide or most nasty epoxy coated stuff. Even pre-cleaning a surface with a grinder is risky as most coatings give of bad fumes when heated above a certain temp. Stay safe.
Yeah I was thinking it can't be good that I can smell the fumes when I use this respirator. My problem is I can't seem to find OV/P100 pancake cartridges. The only ones I see are for "nuisance vapors" which I assume means basically no protection. The full size OV/P100 cartridges don't fit under my welding helmet.
Working full time back in welding at a factory making Radiators for Caterpillar, Volvo etc. after my 1st 3 days I’ve had severe respiratory issues flare up. Bad sinus infection, sore throat, cough etc. we have “fume extractors” and small fans. However the place is just generally dirty, dusty, and stuff floats everywhere in the air. We have painters and Powdercoaters doing their bid also so there’s plenty of stuff to mess with your respiratory system. I picked up some cheap 3M N95 Respirators from Walmart today going to try those under my helmet and see how it goes. I work a 10 hour shift, Do you suggest I wear the respirator the whole shift or only when I’m welding and grinding like I do my helmet? Thanks.
welding for a living just brake down and boy the helmet with a respirator built-in if you're just a hobby welder ok can get away with it i don't lend my helmets i have and cheap one for that reason i tell my welder it's your choice in helmets you like to weld with as an owner of the fab shop to supply them with the right filters for his helmets too as long as the bill they hand it in to the office they get paid for them too same as to welding gloves too i will pay for them as long as you hand the bill to the office too its worth the money to do that too
@@bobrat You missed the joke. “Well respected” doctors had said surgical masks filter micro droplets but in reality they don’t at all. It’s only meant to stop spit and bodily fluid spray during surgery.
Yep mate works well until it doesn't I recently watched One of your prev channel video of the bloke which was a diver. l mean used to be but definitely not anymore. That poor fella is my age
You’re a great speaker / presenter no doubt. The breathing act through cheap masks was so you, funny! Just keep away from discussing geo-political issues as it’s too multi-layered and too complex.
Up until recently I didn't know how toxic welding fumes were even for mild steel. So a respirator is on my list.

@@DIGGER19860 Without a doubt a wise investment im going to add that to my truck. i appreciate it.
@@DIGGER19860 yeah but only really convenient for a shop guy. Refinery work it’s basically useless
Grinding dust especially! These half masks are the best
Thank you for this informative upload. Your knowledge and experience is very much appreciated. Keep informing the people...

Exactly and he said 16$these things these days are 40$ so he won't be throwing them away. And they aren't hard to clean at all

Between you and mechanic Steve you guys should put together some kinda tractor meet/ meet and greet one day. I know I'd show up to support you guys👍
If you are going to discard the housing rather than clean it you may as well get the fully disposable masks.
This mask is great I have paint filters on one of them and I have a second one with dust filters.

I have that exact respirator that I use when sanding wood.
Soak the respirator body in purple power 50/50 with water over night, rise it and it will be like new.
Isn't that just a dust filter though? My 3M fume filters are more like white/gray rounded squares whereas my dust filters are the pink circles
Haven’t seen you in a while we miss u
But this would mean i would stop chokeing and hacking up blood?!?!? What fun is that?!?!?!?
Trying to die sooner here...
Do you still have you CNC Plasma table? If so, I can I get a quote?
no I wont go home lol. have a great day and God bless.

Oh man just get a free surgical mask! Those can filter out microscopic droplets.
And they burn too
