Nick, strictly speaking your hull is not suffering from rust staining. It has been subjected to hot steel fragments which have impacted the gel coat, in some cases burying themselves beneath the surface of the gelcoat and subsequently rusting and staining the gelcoat. Sorry for being long winded but the conclusion is, removing the rust stain is not resolving the problem - it is just removing the evidence. If any steel particles remain in the gelcoat they will very happily produce rust stains for years to come. Sorry.
Just out of curiosity, wouldn’t using a fall out remover (thioglycolic acid) used to decontaminate car paint dislodge the metal particles and maybe make them possible to remove with a contact wash or maybe with the aid of a clay bar? Or maybe angel grind particles are a different beast…? I sure hope they solve it!
I tend to agree, that sadly the rust will continue to reappear. The shipping company are getting off lightly as you may need to plane the gelcoat and resurface the hull as a worse case scenario. I really hope it doesn’t come to that!!!!
Having done numerous ocean crossings, it always pays to just cover your boat in marine wax. Whether under own keel or transport. Just get a few tubs and rub it on by bare hand. No rubbing out, just leave the excess to dry. Saves gelcoat, protects stainless, prevents plexiglass from fading. Takes a day to get off, but would have prevented any damage including grinding metal dust UV damage, or spray paint damage from neighbor boats on a crossing.
A really good idea, we weren't aware that this could be an issue- we just thought our boat would get super dirty and we'd be able to clean it. If I could go back in time, we'd absolutely be doing this or even paying to wrap the boat.
I mentioned this in the last video's comment section, but mostly likely the rust straining is from iron ore dust blowing from the mines in Mauritania. If it was grinding dust then it would be local to where ever the grinding was done. Unless of course there were grinding the whole deck of the ship. If you don't believe me google The Sahara-Sahel Dust Corridor.
This could have been entitled 'Super-Stressful Haul Out' bc I was literally holding my breath! Also, glad you're taking the time to enjoy your surroundings beyond the boat (and thank you for sharing). Many sailing channels barely show life beyond their own deck, it's a shame.
I sure hope this works out. Purchased a Subaru brand new that rusted through paint within 6 months. 5 times to the paint shop prior to selling as a rust bucket.

I feel for you guys chasing this issue. I wonder if the cause is not grinding, but the guts of the shipping vessels engine, like piston rings or piston lining breaking down in the exhaust. Just that it’s spread EVERYWHERE makes me feel like it was spread through plumes, not direct grinding spray? Best wishes getting it resolved.
Wow ! Now that's tight ! The fact that angle grinding particles are everywhere is mindboggling ! I am glad that those responsible are covering costs. You guys teach me something every episode. Thank you
I know you have probably finished the job but the next time this happens try using a product called auto glynm magma. No need to haul out which i know how scary that is with a cat in a concrete lift bay. Just spray it on the rust stains which then turn scary purple... then then they lift off and you just wash them off with water. Job done. I had a car that had the same stains and i could not believe how easy that was! I use it on the boat alot and it does not damage the paint alloy or gell coat. It's magic. The other thing about it, it will find all the spots of steel that haven't rusted yet which will go on rusting for ages
Pleased you had a couple of days away on a mini adventure free from filming with "Kavanche" (?) from Seawind Europe and wife , - that breakfast looked phenomenal! Plus the casual meeting that led to a great night out with neighbours Alan & Pia, and a hangover, is what sailing is about (OK, partially)
I would not want my million dollar boat going into a haul out dock with only 8"/21cm on each side clearance. SO glade everything worked out just fine with the haul out and thank havens that shipping company is stepping up and taking care of things.
It would be almost impossible to cover the entire boat with angle grinding particles. It has nothing to do with angle grinders. It’s most likely that the ship had docked somewhere close to an iron ore ship unloading or loading and the iron ore dust has got everywhere and created 1 million rust spots. I have seen this in Melbourne at pier 35 where it is close to the docks and the boats there, are always covered in a layer of filth from the loading and unloading a ships. Just my humble opinion cheers Rustie.
For all the relaxing one does on a boat it is definitely earned by all the stress one has to endure one way or another by owning a boat.I hope RR2 came out of this with a clean bill of health. Happy Sails.
It's a boat, it lives in salt water. Nick and Terese will be fixing this boat for as long as they own this boat. The work will never be done on it. Sure all of the warranty work will get done at some point, and the rust issue solved, but then they will be solely responsible for all the repairs themselves. Once that boat was launched into the water, the salt water, and air started to go to work on breaking everything down. Just because it is a new boat, doesn't mean they won't be fixing it all the time in exotic places regardless of its newness.
I removed rust staining on my runabout by applying CLR (or any rust remover) on a paper towel, placing it against the hull and putting a piece of plastic wrap over the top of it for 5 minutes. No scrubbing was involved. All weak acids work by liberating the iron from the iron oxide (rust) so make sure you wash the treatment area afterwards because the free iron can still stain the boat or deck if not washed away.
It’s kind of hard to fathom how iron particles ended up on the underside of the boat up by the anchor. It’s almost like the transport ship was tied up alongside a bulker loading up iron ore.
Thinking the same. I can see angle grinding could cause some serious damage, but how on earth did it get EVERYWHERE!? Seems every square inch of the boat is covered.
Your close to being on the money. It's likely to have blown from iron ore mines in Mauritania or from somewhere along the west African coast in my opinion.
I can imagine it will be beyond metal imbedded in gelcoat, anything else that was left out will have metal embedded into it, bow netting. Everything. As a guy that owns a fab / race shop I say grinding sparks are some pretty nasty stuff.

I’ve seen what that chit does to aircraft (especially jet engines) it’s like grinding dust.. volcanic debris I would imagine have a large amount of iron, (I’m not a geologist)

Watching you guys and watching the Wynn’s on their new boat makes me think twice about ever getting a brand new boat. All 4 of you guys are going through drama that should not be happening. Over all you all have a more than acceptable attitude. If anything it is entertaining.
I used to ship a classic car to New England and Florida twice a year. Had to do it myself because 3 times we shipped it 3 times it was damaged and that's a beautiful classic car that people should know will be under scrutiny when it arrives doesn't matter. They still do the stupidest stuff. And damage the car
This looks very similar to something that happens here in scandinavia (but on a much bigger scale) where metal particles from studded winter tires gets flung onto the car beind. That embends itself in the gloss/paint and you have to use special chemicals to remove them. These seems to have been hot so they burned further into the gelcoat. I wonder if it is possible to chemically remove them since abbrassive methods will remove allt he gelcoat. Chemically remove them then cover with new gelcoat? I wonder what the situation was on the ferry across? An angle grinder would spray maybe a small part of the boat but this is all over? Was it stored at port next to some machine shop or something?
Between you and the Wynns - I feel like almost all possible boat problems have happened. lol I hope everything works out and we see Ruby Rose cruising around the Med really soon!
I think the magnificent Wynns Hull #3 HH 44 "Hybrid" Cat being the first of its configuration (no dagger boards HH44) is more in the experimental design, test and evluation category vs being in the "proven production" category like the HH Ruby Rose. The Rose being a gorgus vessel and probabley as well designed as any non racing Cat can get. The 44 Hybrid was something the adventurous Wynn's knowingly wanted to film for their series and get to participate in with HH. One should separate the mishaps and malfunctions on both vessels from the vendor supplied items like the refrigerator, water maker etc from the carbon fiber hulls fabricated by HH.
When stainless steel bolts and weldments are bleeding rust, it's because the stainless steel was not passivated after fabrication was completed. Stainless steel does not rust. However, the ferrous material that settles onto the stainless inside a steel fab shop will eventually rust and make it appear as if the stainless steel is rusting.
To add to the previous comment, it is not an easy repair. Years ago I ran a New Car Dealership in Ohio. GM started shipping vehicles by rail to save on shipping. We noticed rust spots in the paint. It was rust from the wheels and brakes. Buffing did NOT fix the problem. The vehicles had to be wet sanded and clear coat had to be reapplied. The factory paid for everything, as they should have! They started covering all rail cars. Sorry mate you have serious damage!
Terysa is looking remarkably well for being hung over. I've been following several channels which have a case of the new boat blues. Nothing that floats is immune to the need for constant repair.
How do you flush all those little particles out of those hard to reach places to make sure in the future? You don't get more rest in those small nooks and crannies
If that was my boat I'd be looking for the insurer to send me somewhere for a week while they deal with it. You can't live on a boat on the hard, and Nick and Theresa have family all over greece.
Have to love how these boat builders charge for their boats and the delivery and quality is beyond ridiculous. I’ve purchased exotic cars that you could eat of the engine compartment and quality was top drawer….I’m just happy some of the boat builders aren’t building airplanes…
It's simply not normal, you berth alongside the waiting carrier, you're craned aboard, and chocked, lashed down on deck. Rig and stanchions in place. How on earth would the crew wrap the boat? Of course, if you come out of factory/yard flat packed rig off and are craned from the dock, its a possibility, but not with a wet lift, or floating into a submersible deck yacht carrier. Ive shipped two boats across the Atlantic, neither was wrapped, and neither suffered the idiocy of someone angle grinding. I have however suffered rust damage ashore due to someone shot-blasting a steel structure nearby. As with RR2, it took 100's of hours of remedial work
@@davidwebb4904 I'd suggest that lifting a boat ashore to the facilities of a yard ashore is entirely different proposition to craning a boat on to a ship

Far out guys... you have been put through the ringer by transit operator. What the hell were they doing soldering on the cargo ship??!
That looks like a new pull out ! Why didn't they make it wider! That's crazy boat's are only getting wider!!!
Gosh.... I must have missed the email inviting me to breakfast... what a shame!!
Good luck.
I was thinking the very same thing.
Nah, way more are possible....
Yes..thinking along those lines. This company might of "slipped in" some bogus stainless steel bolts.
By the way a "clanging haylyard" and the noise it makes has a name for it. It is caĺled " The devils tattoo".
Nick: "Turkish breakfast is great but sometimes you fancy beans....."
Nick, You've left your beautiful guitar out in the tropical sun . . . Shame on you . . mind you; typical for a leftie . . . haha go well
Terysa is looking remarkably well for being hung over. I've been following several channels which have a case of the new boat blues. Nothing that floats is immune to the need for constant repair.
What is yoru guess as to how / why the rust problem developed? It seems like a unique situation.
Get some flat fenders they are great.
How do you flush all those little particles out of those hard to reach places to make sure in the future? You don't get more rest in those small nooks and crannies
Good for 7 Star. If I ever need to ship my boat, they will be at the top of my list.
What?? Even though they soldered next to client boats???!!
Well, that’s one way to get over hangover, wedge your catamaran into a concrete basin, Next time try aspirin and a long walk. 😳😳
If that was my boat I'd be looking for the insurer to send me somewhere for a week while they deal with it. You can't live on a boat on the hard, and Nick and Theresa have family all over greece.
You should now declare that RUST is a reverse sponsor of the channel.
Bahahaha!
Have to love how these boat builders charge for their boats and the delivery and quality is beyond ridiculous. I’ve purchased exotic cars that you could eat of the engine compartment and quality was top drawer….I’m just happy some of the boat builders aren’t building airplanes…
Why wasn’t boat wrapped for its transit?
As with RR2, it took 100's of hours of remedial work
Really? Are you the one who suggested putting seatbelts on motorbikes.
@@faraway5828 Yachts are routinely wrapped when coming out of the water to winter over on the hard at my marina....
@@faraway5828 The time to wrap a boat Vs the time to fix this damage. You decide.....
@@davidwebb4904 I'd suggest that lifting a boat ashore to the facilities of a yard ashore is entirely different proposition to craning a boat on to a ship
Technical question: antifoul on the prop - yes or no?
