      Did you refer him to Auxillis or Auto Exchange or any other credit hire company? That’s why it’s a write-off. The hire company would have put him in a “like for like” hire car. Even at GTA rates that’s £200 a day so 3 weeks while you wait for parts and do the work would be £4k. Add in the cost of repairs and you’re over the value of the car and so the cost of the claim becomes more than the value of the vehicle, the definition of a total loss.

    Insurance companies have always done this - they have zero incentive to do things cheaply at all, as all the do is pass the cost on the consumer with higher insurance premiums, so they keep their profits nice and high for the shareholders. Some garages are also just as bad when they hear it's an "insurance job" the £signs just light up in their eyes.
    As you said it does make me much more likely to look at a Cat N and even a Cat S, I mean you guys already had me heading down that route with the standard you were working to but this has made me even more likely to actively go looking for a "Cat" car of some kind.

      I think garage's have set pricing guidelines, I worked at one for a while so if a wing was damaged it'd be the cost on the wing plus a set 4 hours to paint and X amount of funds per hour, plus the cost of the paint. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a catorgorised car if you can see where the damage was and know its been repaired properly. Thank you for the compliment! A non catorgorised car could have been damaged worse than one that's been through the insurance, its all about being able to spot the tell tail signs and using a decent car checking app

    When I was a claims advisor at Direct Line about 10 years ago, I think it was that, if the damage repair was more than 60% of the value of the car, then it was written off. I don't know if it's still the same or if they have changed the % nowadays. One thing that I have found out since then is that a lot of insurance companies don't use engineers anymore, and it's the claims advisors decision based on a damage matrix that they use as to whether a car is written off or not.
    Great straight to the point episode lads, thank you. 👍

      @@TransformotionVR In all the years that I worked at Direct Line none of the claims advisors were ever trained in vehicle damage as it was done by the engineers. We actaully had some good engineers when i was there as the majority of them would rather get a car repaired rather than write it off, especially if the owner had, had the car for a fair few years. In fact some of them would authorise the use of really good used replacement parts before they would write a car off. It seems it's changed for the worse these days.

    Insurance write-offs these days are terrible - some insurance companies just can't be bothered to check cars so write them off to save some work! Although the cost of genuine replacement parts and the cost of hire/loan cars will also affect the outcome - it's not just the value of the car but the value of the claim itself.
    Anyways, great episode - nice to see something going on that doesn't look like the car's been minced 😆

Imagine you pay say £600 a year for your car insurance. and you accidentally back into a say a Toyota land cruiser which has ADAS systems on board... You damage the bumper, the Grille and Badge along with the Camera in the grill and the radar sensor behind the bumper. the camera is £4500 the grille is £600 the badge is £350 and the radar sensor is £6500... When I saw the clip at the start, I was expecting the bumper to be cracked and caved, damage to the boot lid and the light cluster, but the old cluster didn't even look like the bulbs were damaged!
    I'm guessing the reason they write cars off so quickly is because, like the lads say, they'd go to manufacturer for brand new parts, but also the admin of it all; arranging storage, garage slot, parts delivery etc etc.
    I do think Andy is onto something; if you had the option for repairs using Manufacturer parts or OEM parts that could be a good way to reduce how much insurance repairs cost, especially for older cars like the Jag, because no-one is putting brand new Jag parts on a 14 year old car, it's either eBay parts or OEM.
    I've never been put of by Cat N and Cat S, as long as you can talk to the owner, find out what the damage was and when the repairs were done, then you can still have confidence in it. Plus, a certain car history checker comes in handy for those things too...

    Dent damage to a Qtr Panel would not be deemed as structural damage. Structural damage refers to an area the would affect the "Passenger cell" Chassis legs for example and also the Damage to the sill you mentioned is regarded as the passenger cell. If a body shop has a contract with an insurance company the are tied to work at the rates and discounts provided by that company. The old rule of thumb for a car being a possible total loss was 66% of its P.AV. (Pre accident value). These days that figure is sometimes higher due to parts availability etc.

    • @rickhall9026
      @rickhall9026 6 месяцев назад

      @@TransformotionVR The "passenger cell" is basically from the front bulkhead to the rear parcel shelf area. Modern cars are designed to protect this area as much as possible with high strength steels used in the construction and crumple zones to absorb as much of the energy from a crash as possible. if its a Cat S then it should have been noted there is "structural" damage somewhere?? I personally would not want to repair a Cat S with out all the required equipment to complete a "safe Repair". You will have a "duty of care" to make sure the vehicle is safe to be put back on the road again. Said to say there are a lot of "cowboys" in the industry who only carer about making a profit...

  • @andrewthompsonuk1

    The overall problem is the "fault" nature of the claims. I think this case was down to all that "rental car nonsense", if the owner demands only new parts to be used this car could be out of action for a few months. For example, my friend's car was out for many weeks after a light rear-ending, there was one small plastic bracket that was needed to finish the repair. For all that time she had a hire car (at the 3rd party's expense), so the one £10 part probably cost 1000s in hire car costs. The ironic thing was the bracket could have been purchased used or plastic welded.
    In my opinion, the industry needs to shift to a model where you specify what type of repairs and other covers like rental cars you would accept if your car is damaged. Like a "new parts dealer body shop" only policy or a policy that allows more sensible repairs.
    However, the big change that would require a law change would be to make it illegal to claim for a higher level of cover than you originally purchased from your own policy.

    Personally speaking, I wouldn't touch a car that has been a Cat S previously, simply because there's no real way of knowing both the quality of parts used in the repair, or the experience of the repairer. Buying a salvage vehicle and doing it yourself might be different though. Insurance companies often hike premiums even more ludicrously than they are if it has been written off previously too. I wouldn't be surprised if an insurer would refuse to pay out in an accident if you hadn't declared it was previously written off, even if you didn't know it had been.

St in not saying it can't be done cheap but why should a third party claim be done on the cheap when it's not their fault.

    Cat A used to be when someone had died in the car the cat A had to be kept in a separate compound.
    Cat B, too badly damaged for repair, a breaker only
    CAT S, the damage is more than the cars worth or over 50% of the value.
    Cat N, usually bolt on parts.
    Insurance decided to write off even though the repair is less than the value of the car.
    25/30 years ago a lot of these cars got repaired by the insurance company because not all insurance gave hire cars out,, you had to wait for the car to be repaired, obviously older cars got written off, but nowadays insurance companies don't want to get involved with repairs, as soon as the dash airbag goes off it usually guarantees a write off, cars under 3 years old will get repaired by the insurance.
    A mate of mine bought a 3 year old seat Leon fr with 15.000 miles down as cat S, they must have hit a kerb and sent the front wheel back braking the suspension arm the wheel and tyre as dash airbag went off, when he took the wheel arch liner off there was no damage to the bottom of the A post so should not have been a cat S, he had it back running within 24 hours, then a couple of weeks later got a dashboard for it, the hire cars can cost £10,000 for 3 months

      Thanks for the info mate, knew it was somthing like that, I think the hire cars are half the problem, maybe the insurance should just add a grand to the claim then give that to the person who owns the car for taxis untill the car is done or to buy a cheap runaround? We could have driven her own car until the bits came in but we were told we didn’t need to. So a small repair turned to an £8k claim! Just ridiculous. The biggest reason for these massive rises which we will all have to suffer is EV cars.EV's are very expensive to repair and any slight scratch on the battery casing the car will be written off.As you know replacing the battery pack will be more expensive in most cases than the whole value of the car due to heavy depreciation so as expected customers will have to bear the heavy rises on our insurance renewals.Insurance companies are being pressurized by EV manufacturers not to tell customers that EV's will be the main causes of insurance rises.Happy day's for insurance companies!!

Insurance is a scam. They want to get old cars off the road and expect you to replace it with an EV. My car was worth around £2000 but now its valued at £350. You will not find a B7 A4 in the same condition as mine is for £350. Absolute scam! Was your insurance with AXA? Mine was settled as 100% non fault and my premium went up by £1000

      Any cheap cars these days just get written off for fun, it's bad like. I think it's their way of getting old cars off the road! Glad you got it back and sorted it out 😉

    Why would they even consider writing a car off for a broken light and a damaged bumper? I would have thought the car should be written off only if its undriveable, and even then it would be better to use yourselves to transformotion it. The only sensible option is what you've done to pay the money and spend £180 and half an hour to fix it. I wouldn't be fussed about the mark either. If he wants £1300 I'll have it.

    • @TransformotionVR
      @TransformotionVR  7 месяцев назад +1

      Mad isn't it! The cost was only £180 if he gets it sprayed, he's not had that done so only cost him £30 and a few beers for us, I wouldnt be bothered about the cat n either for that price ha ha

    Insurance is a con . They should use seconhand parts with the owners permission especially things like light , wings and doors etc. Copart are also to blame as they offer such high prices to insurance companies to get stock .
