Looking carefully at this race I think that Tyson's pickup acceleration phase (30-60m) was what beat everyone. There were two other guys near him who reached the same top speed- you can see in the last 20m the guy next to him runs evenly with him. But Tyson reached top speed quicker so pulled ahead.

thank u for reminding me of the motorcycle accident! I remember reading in SI just before the 2004 Olympics that he had that accident between the 2002-2003 or 2001-2002 season. Ato Bolden said once Mo had that accident, the Maurice Greene that everyone knew 2001 and prior had died! But he still had 8 sub 10's in 2004!

I don't know what the tailwind is about, but the meter officially stopped at 9.8 when Gay crossed the finish line, so I don't know how the computer mistakenly said that he finished at 9.75.

Many times the first time that pops up on the screen (9.75) is not what is made official later (9.76). Maybe the official finish line tape needs to be reviewed to see when the athlete's torso actually tripped the tape. Maybe (just a guess) sometimes a hand swings through the line first, tripping it early. See the T&F or iaaf websites. Sometimes they have a composite photo of all the athletes crossing the line.

I'm the same way. I'm tall (6'4"), but have very fast starts. It's about inherent muscle type. I trained for a long time, even after playing ODP soccer for years, to be able to get down below 19 minutes in a 5k. Genetic slow twitch, increased VO2, and gained mitochondria are the ways to become a better endurance athelete.

You don't know your stuff poultryfan, Tyson has had a steady progression since high school. I know, he set the record at my schools invitational meet with a 10.3!!! In JUCO he ran a 10.16, at Arkansas he won the NCAAs in 10.06, last year he finally dipped under 10 seconds, now he's world champ. Face it, Hater, he's the BEST IN THE WORLD TODAY!!!

OH yeah, I watch the 2001 Worlds. Mo ran 9.82, into 0.5 headwind, pulled his quad and started to pull up at 80m and still ran that time. If his quad never went, Asafa would never been world record holder, Mo would of ran easily, 9.75 or better. If Asafa had Mo fire and heart, he would easily be world champ!

Also consider Lewis only ran 15 sub ten seconds in his career, which is from 1980 to 1996. Greene ran 52 sub 10's between 1997 to 2004. Lewis only ran once under 9.90, Greene did that about 10 times. Also Greene ran in a era that had better sprinters, Bailey, Fredricks, Bolden, Surin, Thompson, Powell were on any given night, anyone could crack sub 9.90!

  • @blitzac2005

yeah, i'm jamaican, and people always ask me what I do to work out.
The truth is - i'm built like this naturally. I have tons of muscle fibre, low body fat, and not much static strength. I'm super weak on the bench press - always have been.
    - meaning that my muscles are built more so for speed than pure strength. [I'm one of the weakest on my college football team; but the fastest by far.]

  • @mmmyer05
    @mmmyer05 17 лет назад

KINGOFYARD who are you kidding. Tyson has ran in the 9.7s twice this year where asafa has only ran 9.9 once. Asafa is struggling this year and when you say jamaicans are the best, America is the only nation that has consistently produced world class sprinters that have been contenders for the World Record. Tyson will do work on Asafa because he has worked harder and wants it more.

The rewards at the top level of sport today are so great that to succeed 3 things are required:
    1.) Be genetically gifted
2.) Be willing to work very hard
3.) Be willing to take performance enhancing drugs
If an athlete omits any of these 3 he will NOT rise to the top because there are too many other guys competing with all 3 of the above attributes.
To think it is any other way is to deny logic and reality.

Without any doubt,MJ is the most dominate sprinter, between 100m to 400m! But when it comes to 50m to 100m, Greene is the most dominate sprinter in history. Even Michael Johnson was quoted in CNNSI 4 years ago, he thought the greatest pure sprinter in history was Mo Greene! The only man to be 60m World Champ(99),100m World Champ(97,99,01),200m World Champ,100m Olympic Champ(00), 55m,60m,100m World Record Holder, simultaneously!

In other words, the harder an athlete trains, the more likely they are to be on steroids.
Natural athletes quickly over-train and get weaker and slower if they try to follow a hard training regiment for long.
The biggest advantage of steroids is that they allow an athlete to recover quicker from hard workouts and allow that athlete to train more frequently.
The drugs are here to stay and I would be surprised if there are any top athletes out there in almost any sport that aren't juiced up.

  • @rev0107

it's all about the muscles. we all have fast twitch and slow twitch muscles.more fast twitch equals better sprinters, slow twitch better long distance. black people apparently have a slightly higher amount of the fast twitch muscles so tend to be good at sports where explosive power is important

  • @farzamk
    @farzamk 17 лет назад

Gays best 10m split was 0.84 in Osaka, Powell's 9.74 had 3! 0.83s. Famously Carl Lewis, Ben Johnson, Greene are all known to give ONE 0.83 10 split. Powell having 3 + the fact that one cannot maintain absolute max speed, proves that powells max speed is superior to anyone elses. Gay just accelerates slower, and has a ton left to finish with, creating a illusion.

WHAT! why did they go to a US college in the first place? Because they were some of the top up and coming athletes. I dont get what you said, after 18 years of training orginally, they then go to progress from better facilities. But the US didn't make the runner, they enhanced them through better training conditions. You say it yourself. i admit that my comment may be misread but not to the degree you took it.

Before anyone give them title g.o.a.t, that means they have to surpass ever accomplishment that mo greene has done, 00 Olympic champ(100m), 3 time world champ(97,99,01)(100m); indoor world champ (99)(60m), world record holder (55m,60m,100m);200m world champ(99);52 legal sub 10s, and if he never pulled his quad at the 01 worlds, were he ran 9.82s, he would of ran easily 9.74. That not saying that neither can suprpass all of this, but let them show the world first

yeah you are right. You cannot say you are good before you can run a sub 10.40, cause some people peak very early. You cannot count on young sprinters results.
Carl Lewis ran 11.10 when he was 15.

  • @ericsgym

    Here are the facts:
It is highly improbable for anyone who is all-natural to beat a steroid user at the Olympic level because the drugs give an athlete too much of an advantage.
Steroids work by allowing a person to train harder and longer and still recover and make progress in their workouts.
Steroid users do not necessarily develop huge muscle mass unless they are specifically training to do so.
Since Ben Johnson's time, most have learned ways to beat the drug test.

Also keep in mind, if Mo quad never went on him in 01 Worlds, Asafa probably would not be the world record holder. Everyone who was in that race all believe if he ran throughout, he would of ran about 9.74. As for Carl Lewis he cross the finish line TWICE first. Carl could of never be able to handle Mo both in their primes because he would of been destroy in the beginning of the race just like Ben Johnson used to do before he was taken down in Seoul!
