Looking carefully at this race I think that Tyson's pickup acceleration phase (30-60m) was what beat everyone. There were two other guys near him who reached the same top speed- you can see in the last 20m the guy next to him runs evenly with him. But Tyson reached top speed quicker so pulled ahead.
thank u for reminding me of the motorcycle accident! I remember reading in SI just before the 2004 Olympics that he had that accident between the 2002-2003 or 2001-2002 season. Ato Bolden said once Mo had that accident, the Maurice Greene that everyone knew 2001 and prior had died! But he still had 8 sub 10's in 2004!
I don't know what the tailwind is about, but the meter officially stopped at 9.8 when Gay crossed the finish line, so I don't know how the computer mistakenly said that he finished at 9.75.
Many times the first time that pops up on the screen (9.75) is not what is made official later (9.76). Maybe the official finish line tape needs to be reviewed to see when the athlete's torso actually tripped the tape. Maybe (just a guess) sometimes a hand swings through the line first, tripping it early. See the T&F or iaaf websites. Sometimes they have a composite photo of all the athletes crossing the line.
I'm the same way. I'm tall (6'4"), but have very fast starts. It's about inherent muscle type. I trained for a long time, even after playing ODP soccer for years, to be able to get down below 19 minutes in a 5k. Genetic slow twitch, increased VO2, and gained mitochondria are the ways to become a better endurance athelete.
You don't know your stuff poultryfan, Tyson has had a steady progression since high school. I know, he set the record at my schools invitational meet with a 10.3!!! In JUCO he ran a 10.16, at Arkansas he won the NCAAs in 10.06, last year he finally dipped under 10 seconds, now he's world champ. Face it, Hater, he's the BEST IN THE WORLD TODAY!!!
Powel has yet to prove himself as a competitor, no major wins to his name. He is like a great time trialer, but Gay has shown himself to be able to produce real quality under pressure.
i'd say ethiopians are the worlds best long distance runners because they can hold out in our conditions because they train in amazingly high temperatures so they think we are cold lol
awsem run there. tyson has just run 10:02 in london , into a slight headwind though and he says he eased off at the end.Its gonna be close at osaka , im favouring powell but it could go any way.
scientists examined it and said if he did not do that he would have made between 9.55 and 9.61. and bolt still has time to get better,he is only 22.bolt said if he did not slow down he would have had to work harder to break it again.just wait till next olympics.
OH yeah, I watch the 2001 Worlds. Mo ran 9.82, into 0.5 headwind, pulled his quad and started to pull up at 80m and still ran that time. If his quad never went, Asafa would never been world record holder, Mo would of ran easily, 9.75 or better. If Asafa had Mo fire and heart, he would easily be world champ!
America usually isn't the country that develpos the sprinter. They recieve sprinters from all over the world. Asafa Powell turned down the offer to run for the US, unlike most of the best.
i'm an Asafa follower, but his minds needs to be stronger...i dont like that he loses his composure after the first 60. still tho, i'm believing he'll come thru
After FloJo retired from sprinting, she tried 5Ks and could not break 20. My daughter is an NCAC finalist in the 100/200 yet her best 5K is only high 22. It's completely different.
Also consider Lewis only ran 15 sub ten seconds in his career, which is from 1980 to 1996. Greene ran 52 sub 10's between 1997 to 2004. Lewis only ran once under 9.90, Greene did that about 10 times. Also Greene ran in a era that had better sprinters, Bailey, Fredricks, Bolden, Surin, Thompson, Powell were on any given night, anyone could crack sub 9.90!
yeah, i'm jamaican, and people always ask me what I do to work out. The truth is - i'm built like this naturally. I have tons of muscle fibre, low body fat, and not much static strength. I'm super weak on the bench press - always have been. - meaning that my muscles are built more so for speed than pure strength. [I'm one of the weakest on my college football team; but the fastest by far.]
KINGOFYARD who are you kidding. Tyson has ran in the 9.7s twice this year where asafa has only ran 9.9 once. Asafa is struggling this year and when you say jamaicans are the best, America is the only nation that has consistently produced world class sprinters that have been contenders for the World Record. Tyson will do work on Asafa because he has worked harder and wants it more.
The rewards at the top level of sport today are so great that to succeed 3 things are required: 1.) Be genetically gifted 2.) Be willing to work very hard 3.) Be willing to take performance enhancing drugs If an athlete omits any of these 3 he will NOT rise to the top because there are too many other guys competing with all 3 of the above attributes. To think it is any other way is to deny logic and reality.
Without any doubt,MJ is the most dominate sprinter, between 100m to 400m! But when it comes to 50m to 100m, Greene is the most dominate sprinter in history. Even Michael Johnson was quoted in CNNSI 4 years ago, he thought the greatest pure sprinter in history was Mo Greene! The only man to be 60m World Champ(99),100m World Champ(97,99,01),200m World Champ,100m Olympic Champ(00), 55m,60m,100m World Record Holder, simultaneously!
In other words, the harder an athlete trains, the more likely they are to be on steroids. Natural athletes quickly over-train and get weaker and slower if they try to follow a hard training regiment for long. The biggest advantage of steroids is that they allow an athlete to recover quicker from hard workouts and allow that athlete to train more frequently. The drugs are here to stay and I would be surprised if there are any top athletes out there in almost any sport that aren't juiced up.
it's all about the muscles. we all have fast twitch and slow twitch muscles.more fast twitch equals better sprinters, slow twitch better long distance. black people apparently have a slightly higher amount of the fast twitch muscles so tend to be good at sports where explosive power is important
Gays best 10m split was 0.84 in Osaka, Powell's 9.74 had 3! 0.83s. Famously Carl Lewis, Ben Johnson, Greene are all known to give ONE 0.83 10 split. Powell having 3 + the fact that one cannot maintain absolute max speed, proves that powells max speed is superior to anyone elses. Gay just accelerates slower, and has a ton left to finish with, creating a illusion.
WHAT! why did they go to a US college in the first place? Because they were some of the top up and coming athletes. I dont get what you said, after 18 years of training orginally, they then go to progress from better facilities. But the US didn't make the runner, they enhanced them through better training conditions. You say it yourself. i admit that my comment may be misread but not to the degree you took it.
Before anyone give them title g.o.a.t, that means they have to surpass ever accomplishment that mo greene has done, 00 Olympic champ(100m), 3 time world champ(97,99,01)(100m); indoor world champ (99)(60m), world record holder (55m,60m,100m);200m world champ(99);52 legal sub 10s, and if he never pulled his quad at the 01 worlds, were he ran 9.82s, he would of ran easily 9.74. That not saying that neither can suprpass all of this, but let them show the world first
yeah you are right. You cannot say you are good before you can run a sub 10.40, cause some people peak very early. You cannot count on young sprinters results. Carl Lewis ran 11.10 when he was 15.
Here are the facts: It is highly improbable for anyone who is all-natural to beat a steroid user at the Olympic level because the drugs give an athlete too much of an advantage. Steroids work by allowing a person to train harder and longer and still recover and make progress in their workouts. Steroid users do not necessarily develop huge muscle mass unless they are specifically training to do so. Since Ben Johnson's time, most have learned ways to beat the drug test.
Yoo Why do people gotta be soo negitive! they are both elite runners it really doesnt matter what half da people up on dis think because talk is cheap we are juss gonna have to wait n see how it all turns out. powell is my favorite because he continues to run at a strong level n is defending his title, if Gay comes n takes it then respect to him because both train hard n deserve it too respect to both of them n stop bringin niKKas down for there accomplishments!
Also keep in mind, if Mo quad never went on him in 01 Worlds, Asafa probably would not be the world record holder. Everyone who was in that race all believe if he ran throughout, he would of ran about 9.74. As for Carl Lewis he cross the finish line TWICE first. Carl could of never be able to handle Mo both in their primes because he would of been destroy in the beginning of the race just like Ben Johnson used to do before he was taken down in Seoul!
Looking carefully at this race I think that Tyson's pickup acceleration phase (30-60m) was what beat everyone. There were two other guys near him who reached the same top speed- you can see in the last 20m the guy next to him runs evenly with him. But Tyson reached top speed quicker so pulled ahead.
not quite actually, tyson still reached the highest top speed
Preach it, Achilles!!! Jamaican track team makes me want to SPIT!
thank u for reminding me of the motorcycle accident!
I hear you. Three cheers for Frankie. Amazing runner, especially in Atlanta.
Tyson Gay left Mr. Powell in the dust in the 100m final at the world championships in Osaka Japan! 8 words Tyson Gay is the new sheriff in town! lol
Wow. How sprinting as evolved since I last saw this video lolol
They are quite fasinating, these athletes... the front camera replay at normal motion makes them look like machines.
the best form i have ever seen. the body dont wiggle around too much. his arm swing are moving n powerfull. and his leg, omg!!!
At least someone with a bit of brain! Thank you for this comment, you are totally right!
I don't know what the tailwind is about, but the meter officially stopped at 9.8 when Gay crossed the finish line, so I don't know how the computer mistakenly said that he finished at 9.75.
unofficial! yet he is one to watch this year along with asafa :) The WC is going to be great!
What happened to derrick atkins? He disappeared after osaka.
Sometimes they have a composite photo of all the athletes crossing the line.
put it in fullscreen and you'll see how fast these guys are
no worries, I been following Mo's career since the US Championship in 1997! Tyson should become the 3rd man to win the double Sprint.
This video posted 16 years ago 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
still my favorite video
its already settled Tyson Gay is the new worlds fastest man, thanks to the world champs, so its all good Tyson you da man
well that lasted 1 year
😂😂😂 until Bolt
amazing!!
Both men are damm fast. Asafa has 3 legal world records in the past 2 season, Tyson, the hottest sprinter on the planet
9.68! 9.68!!!!!!!!! oh my gooodneess!!!!
I'm the same way. I'm tall (6'4"), but have very fast starts. It's about inherent muscle type. I trained for a long time, even after playing ODP soccer for years, to be able to get down below 19 minutes in a 5k. Asafa 9.74 and slowed down 10 metres before the end. ASAFA RULES
You don't know your stuff poultryfan, Tyson has had a steady progression since high school. I know, he set the record at my schools invitational meet with a 10.3!!! lol

This Guy is going to make being Gay very cool.
i'd say ethiopians are the worlds best long distance runners because they can hold out in our conditions because they train in amazingly high temperatures so they think we are cold lol
Lastima el viento...una gran carrera..!!
that's gay running! run gay, run!
maurice greenes my all time favortie runner, but i gotta give tyson gay his props. he wouldve owned that time if he had a better start.
Real talk, ima b like him 1 day.
The result you see at the start is unoffical. The offical result is the photofinish result which is more accurate.
awsem run there. tyson has just run 10:02 in london , into a slight headwind though and he says he eased off at the end.Its gonna be close at osaka , im favouring powell but it could go any way.
its 9.74 now... he just set it again in italy
If tyson played football he'd be the best wide receiver on the fucking earth!!!!
He's not gay,his name just happens to be Tyson Gay but the news article make it seem like he's gay because of how they title it
it was corrected to 9.76 evanscoolkiid
excellent runner
UR KOOL DUDE!
scientists examined it and said if he did not do that he would have made between 9.55 and 9.61. and bolt still has time to get better,he is only 22.bolt said if he did not slow down he would have had to work harder to break it again.just wait till next olympics.

cops never could catch him he's beast
It's hard to predict the next; it could be a kid that ran 11.2 in high school and hit a growth spurt...
Asafa Powell 9.74!!!!
damn he was bookin
even the ninth fastest time was still fucking fast
America usually isn't the country that develpos the sprinter. They recieve sprinters from all over the world. Asafa Powell turned down the offer to run for the US, unlike most of the best.

they would have no trouble running from the cops XD
man if you subtract the 4.1 wind his time is only 9.85 theres tons of calculators that'll do that for you..but still, Tyson Gay is KING!! 9.68 baby
his top speed is phenomenal and very dangerous and also effective if he had a good start
Also consider Lewis only ran 15 sub ten seconds in his career, which is from 1980 to 1996. Greene ran 52 sub 10's between 1997 to 2004. Lewis only ran once under 9.90, Greene did that about 10 times. dam , tyson is serious

also powell had 11.85m/s top speed compared to 11.82m/s top speed of Gay, this was in Osaka.
Asafa Powel 4 ever! 9.74
💯
his 9.69 wasn't into a headwind. The wind was at 0.0 there was no wind.
The guy in second was pretty close to Gay. He must of had a good time, too.
How 'bout we just give him credit for his hard work and leave it at that. Whaddya say?
@lilaznboy90 isnt that a lil slow for 14
He's just really fit. DUH
oh man, that blows. keep on keepin' on gay
@lilaznboy90 how old are you?
If your not lying, thats extremely impressive.
When i was 13 i ran 12.5 seconds and it was 2nd fastest in my year, after 12.47... but he was 14 lol
true...but not as much as people think. you watch it again and youll see his legs are moving the same speed his arms are just out.
we are the survival race!
Wow.. They accelerated so slow..
learn watching their form, thanks. check out sophmore Jordan Canzeri's 100 / 200m races from last week. Thanks, leave comments.

Mark Lewis-Francis?
he also slowed down.
can you read that message out loud to yourself? if so, how do you pronounce "hln?"
wheres this calculator that tells u that time?

yeah he s in america.
worlds?
Words.
Usain Bolt > Tyson Gay
Has WR in 4x100 m relay,
100m
AND 200m all in same Olympics can never beat that.
Ben Johnson is still the greatest sprinter ever even after 20 yrs. All elite sprinters are on roid.
WHAT! why did they go to a US college in the first place? Because they were some of the top up and coming athletes. he just made 9.68!!!

lol i want tyson gays training regime
womp womp, right!
Did I say he IS slow? I just said he accelerates slow even with 2ms wind helping him.

Tyson Gay was injured. Last time they raced, Gay won.
