I am a veteran who suffers from PTSD, Anxiety, and depression. I was exposed to this song by one of veteran friends. I loved it and I played this song for my wife, she said that she understands a little more what goes through my head on a daily bases. Even with the help I am receiving from the VA. I will never be that person I was before.
The problem is that I didnt realize how much I felt I related to this song until I heard the part about being a burden and I have to go back and look at the rest of the lyrics more closely and realized how this is exactly how I feel about my mental health problems.
the fact that when i try to tell somebody they say stuff like "we all feel like that" when in reality they don't believe me or they just ignore how im feeling and don't understand.
That's why I appreciate how a number of their songs are just, "Yes, it hurts. It truly hurts so much." Some of them bring in the encouragement, messages to fight through, how unique you are, how strong you are, etc, but some are really just acknowledging the hurt without any of the speeches.
I'm glad to see folks starting to bring more attention to these songs, and very much appreciate your commentary giving a little more context for those who might not understand how any of this could make sense, as well as those who deal with this sort of thing and have been trapped from not realizing how common a psychological function this really is, that others really are struggling in so many of the same ways, and that there really are things that can help make it easier and it really is okay to ask for help.

I'm glad I found citizen soldier a while, I've been dealing with depression for a couple years now, and listening made me realize that there are other people who've been dealing with things similar and their music has helped me try to take steps to help myself getting better 😁

I see the part with the burden a little different than you said, it is not just that people would distance their selves from you, but also that you fear to put that burden on the people you swore to protect, even at the cost of your own sanity. So that, when you open to them, there are two things that going to happen: 1. They tell you that you shouldn't overreact and that they had it harder, while ignoring the hardship you have gone through while standing by their side facing the same problems but without someone to talk to 2. that they get even more hurt, and you end in the spiral again where you build them up again of the cost of even more of yourself.

I listened to this song when in a extremely deep depression awhile back and til this day it still hurts listening to this
