    -----------------------
    The truth about diamonds
    You’re Ernest Oppenhiemer in the jewelry business, and you have a monopoly over all the diamond mines in South Africa, the biggest diamond producer
    De Beers was on top of the world
    Diamonds make for great jewelry that the world is willing to top dollar for, they have industrial uses that no other materials can really replace, and you control the main area in the world where 90% diamonds are coming from
    Everyone thought that diamonds are pretty rare, making them very valuable much like how gold is valuable
    It’s becoming more apparent that diamonds aren’t really as rare as we thought
    The economics of diamonds are looking pretty bleak, but you’re a very clever businessman so you’re not willing to quit
    Shift your business from digging as many diamonds out of the ground as possible, to doing everything in your power to control how many diamonds come out of the ground
    Turn your modest diamond operation into the most successful monopoly cartel the world has ever seen in the blood diamond trade
    A cartel is a group of companies coming together to fix the price of a product so that the all cartel members get their fair share of the profits
    Like how major oil countries come together as the cartel OPEC, to fix the price of crude oil, except with a diamond cartel
    Once these locals catch on to how profitable the diamond trade is, they’ll started trading diamonds and smuggling it - do whatever is necessary to crush them
    Now that you have the start of the supply chain under your grip, it’s time for the merchants
    Since you control 90% of the world’s diamond output, merchants who want to buy raw diamonds can really only go to you
    You can’t legally operate in the US, so set up shop in London where you’ll distribute raw diamonds to merchants
    It’s the 1930’s, you’re making more money than ever but the people in you’re biggest market, the US, don’t really care about diamonds and your sales were pretty small
    But jewelery is just that, a “nice-to-have,” a luxury that only people with extra money can afford
    You need diamonds to symbolize something so evergreen that no matter how the economy was doing, no matter how rich or poor a person was, people would always need diamonds

    Diamonds can be made artificially now. And they changed their marketing strategy to suggest that “naturally formed diamonds” are more valuable. There’s a reason diamonds cost way more than you can sell them for.

    • @Pinko-Diamond
      @Pinko-Diamond 2 года назад +3

      Wait tho there is another video by soup emporium explaining this. One of the things that is keeping diamond price up is still is because of the billions of people in China and India that can now afford diamonds in the past decade. That’s the main reason prices aren’t dropping even with the synthetic trade and the monopoly breaking up.

    Diamonds are intrinsically worthless for jewelry purposes, it's sick how we've been twisted to have the idea that diamonds are accepted as crazy expensive.

    • @KennyakaTI
      @KennyakaTI 4 года назад +46

      Diamonds are expensive because of its perceived rarity but just like oil we know that price cartels keep the supply low to jack up the value

    • @mr.fantastic4403
      @mr.fantastic4403 4 года назад +22

      I highly disagree. Yes diamonds are way more expensive than they are actually worth but they do have jewelry purposes. First of all, they have very desirable optical qualities which causes them to reflect and scatter light in ways that you don't see in other gemstones. Also they are very scratch resistant which causes them to have a much longer lifespan.

    • @ImBigFloppa

    • @anonymouswhite7957
      @anonymouswhite7957 4 года назад +11

      Mr. Fantastic It can be said the same with other gemstones, many gemstones can scatter light in which diamonds can’t. One of the main process that made it have desirable optical properties is mostly the cutting process, and bits of impurities (you can achieve similar optical properties by properly cutting glass with lead mixed in it, non experts won’t even realize it). One more, scratch resistant doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll last longer. Diamonds have a pretty high hardness and strength quality but a low toughness quality, meaning it’s easy to fracture (even a mere stong hold of a tweezer can break the culet/tip)

      Oil is also used to manufacture different forms of plastic, to which the world is currently addicted to. Alas, as long as there is demand for plastic, oil is extremely useful.

    Haven't finished the vid. But The same thing happened when Spain first sailed west and found South America. They found more Gold and Silver in South America than they ever did in Europe. Since gold and silver was literal currency back then, when they brought it home, everyone's money essentially became worthless and eventually the inflation spread from Spain all across Europe due to the growing amount of trade, urbanization and population during the time. The price of goods increased 6x the amount in just 100 years, which is small compared to modern "controlled inflation" but it was devastatingly high back then. It's called the "Great Price Revolution" and "Spanish Price revolution" if your curious. Okay I finished the video and, the same thing didn't happen, the Spanish didn't hold the gold and create a genius marketing strategy around it, I don't think they could if they wanted since gold was the currency back then and diamonds were a commodity in this case

    I was listening to Bill Burrs Podcast once
    He said the most intelligent thing about the diamonds that clearly explains why people still continue to buy this overhyped lump of carbon
    He points out how artificial diamond are cheaper and has higher clarity than natural ones but most women will force their boyfriend to buy natural ones because its never about the diamond itself
    Women wanna judge someones worthiness and decide if he is gonna be a good provider or not through diamond
    Even if it ain't overt ,its in their subconscious
    They be like if this fool can spend half a years worth of salary on this thing just to be with me I am financially secured
    Not saying I agree or disagree with this point of view but it does make a lot of sense if you think about it

    I once had a conversation with a local jeweller who told me that back in the 70's when he was going to school to be a jeweller, he learned that General Electric had recently created and patented the first method of lab-growing diamonds. Shortly after the patent was filed, DeBeers bought it from GE and sat on it until it expired, which is why they're only recently becoming a thing. He sold both lab-grown and mined diamonds and routinely encouraged young couples to save money on diamonds by purchasing lab-grown ones. Since my fiancée wouldn't be persuaded to have an actually valuable gemstone in her ring, I bought a lab-grown diamond for a fraction of the cost of a mined one and we're still quite happy with it.

    EDIT; watched. as someone who studied procurement and management, and as someone who has looked into the industry and being a citizen of my country id say this video is 98% accurate. the company really does have challenges, the supply chain is being disrupted and the lab grown diamonds are a challenge even though the company is starting to produce its own, basically the company is matching every form of disruption, they cant take them out and well see how things go in the next 30yrs. i actually hope to work for it. dont you just love marketing LOL
