This, is why I love effective storytelling. In just 16 minutes, Johnny and his team were able to piece together a video that tailored to the poetic storytelling of Antarctica: from the emotions of awe for discovery, awareness of our desires to explore, to the music that spoke to the magic and the desolation of this icy continent. I can't help but gush over at this new format, being able to elevate a topic that most of us just pass by into something memorable, something beautiful, something...impactful. Kudos to you Johnny and the whole team behind, superb storytelling here~
@@johnnyharris It shows that this was a passion project. Cook was a singularly fascinating figure in history. Especially the "soft bigotry of low expectations" that kept him from understanding Polynesian Navigation ...
He’s very good at storytelling, just like the person who wrote Spiderman stories. There’s a lot of topics he’s not getting into. You know…he’s trying to be “safe”. We’ve probably been lied about a lot regarding the earth.
This video is a masterpiece of storytelling, and as a navigation officer i really really appreciate it. Well done to Johnny and the team behind this video, it's beautiful.
About half way through this video I suddenly realized that this video felt very different from your other videos. It’s still has your high quality finger prints all over it but it just feels more relaxed and calming. I really love all your content. Thank you so much for what you do!
Yes, it’s the music but his vocal tone also dramatically changed for this video. It’s not as intense and dramatic as usual. I like the other style just as much but it’s really cool that he can do either style depending on what is appropriate. I think the visuals and the editing style also reflects that more calm/relaxed style choice. This takes a lot of time to get each element to blend well with the rest of the video and it’s clear that he really knows what he’s doing.
Would it be ok for you to share them? I'm currently in the middle of doing a project on the mapping of antarctica for my grads degree and I'm scouring the web for contemporary sources
This new video format and new way of story telling Johnny and his team just did here, took me on a very emotional ride I was not expecting. The soundtrack was one of my favorite parts, it was just so flawless. I’m not even sure what to say other than thank you for bringing the content you do on this platform. I experienced emotions I didn’t think were possible to experience watching a RUclips video. This is easily now my favorite video you’ve ever done on this channel. I thank you very much for all the hard work and dedication you put into making these videos.
This was your best video yet IMO, it's a perfect blend of your beaming passion for maps and geographical places as well as your outstanding ability to tell a human story. You've outdone yourself, this was amazing!
When you manage to make an informative video, that is 16 minutes long but feels like it's 5 - then you've done an excellent job. I do love this video format for this sort of content!
@Khalid that's why we come to Johnny Harris right? For a funny but often quite inaccurate retelling of history, then afterwards we can go to a thunderfoot video (to debunk the alien video) or a present past video (to be told the real history behind something).
@Khalid true but it was still a retelling focused on entertainment. I like the poetic storytelling as it attempts a look beyond the facts to the reason behind them, yet also highlights that there might be some inaccuracies for the sake of storytelling.
I LOVED this format. Almost teared up at the end. We humans sure are despicable at times, but I'd say the average of the human experience, is that of discovery and curiosity. Amazing vid johnny
It is mind blowing how we are just able to have free access to documentaries like this one and to knowledge in general. Despite all the things the world is going through right now, we are living in a true Golden Era!
We all know that Johnny’s map game is right up there in the ‘League of Extraordinary Map Gurus’, but is there a word that exists that describes Johnny’s writing used in the narration, and if not, we need one. The voiceover modulation, the storyline and the storytelling in this video are absolutely captivating! You can’t step away from the video at all, you want to stick around to see what’s around the ‘corner’ at every moment of the film.
"Beauty" is not usually something that comes to mind when I think of Johnny Harris videos, but I've got to say, this new piece of yours was definitely awe-inspiring, and yes...beautiful. The music, with the nearly lyrical narration layered over a story of human grit, perseverance, and determination, was absolutely a site to behold. You even got me misty-eyed at a point or two.... Truly great work guys.
I'd love to see a sequel and hear your thoughts and discoveries about the Piri Reis map that accurately maps Antartica (partially) way ahead of its time. Loved this! You did an amazing job. Thank you for your beautiful and factual work R
@Johnny Harris this was by far the most beautiful and well written video of yours I've had the chance of indulging myself in. The script was impeccably written, and please consider giving whoever came up with this absolute masterpiece a raise. Kudos Johnny!
We are continuing this trend, you should look into efforts taken by scientists to explore our oceans. We have been able to get to Antarctica for quite a bit longer than we've been able to explore the depths of the oceans and as you probably know oceans cover quite a bit more surface area of Earth than Antarctica does. Except it's not covered by kilometers of snow and ice but instead with kilometres of water
I think I like your map-related videos/stories the best. I learn so much from these. And the storytelling format is beautiful while still being very educational. You have a real talent for natural and social science documentaries.
That was awesome story telling. The visuals, the exploration and the progress we have made is amazing. And then we finally decided, NOT to exploit Antarctica! You (almost) made me proud of Humanity.
Yeah. To busy killing and exploiting Vietnam etc. at the time that extra care was taken lest we murder on the tundra. Decisions made together by the exact same murdering parties. Right!
True, but there's definitely a big asterisk next to that statement. Our agreement not to exploit Antarctica is certainly worth celebrating, but I can't help but fear that it's impermanent.

Love this format! The script is so well written, and the way you enunciate the words just really bring the story to life. Stunning visuals too. More please!
I love the fact that it's become the best mapped continent on Earth and what that says about the human spirit, as if the universe went out of its way to make it inaccessible and hard, just short of putting up signs saying "don't come here, this isn't for you" and we were like "stuff that, I'm gonna map it even harder now just you watch"
The same human spirit that likes power, control and a step-up against their opposition or the entire world. I did read in to the Antarctica a little bit more after watching the video and the amount of countries wanting to capitalise and control the Antarctica is/was very under-stated at the height in which exploration was in full swing in that point in history. I'm just glad that we as a species came together to unlock the mystery surrounding the Antarctica, it's a vast place on Earth which needed collaboration, courage and smart minds. I really like this video it's definitely one of the best Johnny & Co have created.
mapping is one thing, living is another. its not a sustainable place to live, same with most of the planet actually, cities, towns, villages etc etc practically every place in civilization is set up next to resources we can use or trade, in other words, it is sustainable, and most of the world really is not that, the human spirit is truly effin amazing, that is 100% correct!! but nature is far more amazing, and far more terrifying, i think humans reached state where they take for granted, but we forget we are basically microscopic parasites on a city sized organism called the earth, and its an organism that survived cataclysms literally trillions of times worse than us, and those cataclysms happen from time to time, if we happen to be alive at the same time, like sharks and crocs were when the asteroid killed the dinosaurs or when the Permian extinction happened after a series of dino asteroid-level disasters occured in quick succession, then and only then can we say our spirits our strong and truly tested, so far we may have beaten animals in raw power and intelligence, but experience in surviving the unimaginable hell this planet can make, we arent anywhere near alot of animals, the earth can easily one day just take all of our current advantages with a single catastrophe, and then were back to being really smart cave men that lost most of their nature based skills.
Thanks Johnny and the team. Been a fan for the last 4-5 years and I realized it's my first time leaving a comment. I love seeing the storytelling and production quiality improve with each video. Brilliant
I was skeptical that I'd find a video on Antarctica interesting, and then Johnny made it. Absolutely mesmerizing, succinct, and still packed full of information. Thank you!

Superbly done and captivating. Perhaps the best and most succinct presentation ever done on our history of Antarctic mapping and exploration. Thank you Johnny. Please keep them coming!
This video is just a joy to behold; the visuals, the music, and of course the information being presented! This is going to be one of my all-time favourites that I’ll watch again and again
Johnny, this gave me the chills. Best episode I’ve seen. It’s also very orienting to see how this time in humanity was shaped by advances in technology and how we I turn shape the future of technology. We are simultaneously the past and future. The way we look at “technologies” from the past as archaic, but they were futuristic at the time is the way this generation of humans will be viewed as archaic in 200 years. We’re marvelling at Chat GPT and AI now. Imagine 200 years from now! Wow. For all our faults as a species I still marvel at what we’ve accomplished and can still accomplish.

One of your best videos, Johnny! Amazing job. Also, fun to see Norway on the map. We don't get mentioned too often, so nice to see. We also were the first to the North pole, I believe, and America, Greenland, and Iceland :-)
I am a long time viewer. Haven’t commented just wanted to say that getting these videos for free is a huge blessing. This is Netflix quality stuff. Well done.
This information really makes the Piri Ries map more of a spectacle. Made in 1513 as a compilation of a bunch of older maps. One third of it exists and Antarctica is said to be drawn on the bottom.
Everything's just so spectacular - from the story itself to how it's told visually and audibly and importantly with which message. Thank you, Johnny and Team! Please keep training in that format
This is easily one of your best, Johnny. I love the optimistic side of the human spirit that you unveil through mapping Antarctica. After world events and reflections of history have injected a lot of cynicism about humanity, this video reminded me of a beautiful side of us that brings a unique excitement.
This was beautiful. I like the new format and it feels almost like art. It'd be cool to alternate between this style and the other that people are more used to from you. I love both, but for different reasons and its really dependent on how I'm feeling on any particular day.
How the World has changed in one lifetime! When I was in primary school in the 1950s I remember, in our school atlas, there were significant lengths of the Antarctic coastline that were designated as dotted lines - not yet surveyed. Now I can pop onto Google Earth on my phone and see all those areas in exquisite detail down to a few metres resolution. And now I can even look at Mars in similar detail too! I was always fascinated by those unsurveyed dotted lines - they were the only ones left in the whole atlas at that time. They were mysterious and fired my imagination to travel.
This is and your other videos are just so awesome.. Johnny Harris and the team your doing a tremendous job.. your videos and just refreshing and very educative
This was an incredible video. Your script was like poetry and I learned to look at the world in a different way. Thank you for opening up history and the world to us.
This might be one of the finest films you have created. The acknowledgement of our flaws, but uplifted by our boundless creativity and optimism, is quite moving.
I noticed that the narration, dialogue, written words to be spoken are different from your previous videos. That, I commend. This, indeed, feels more immersive, poetic and it hooks you at the right pacing of delivering the words, the choice of video snippets and the sound effects. If i were to watch this as student for educational reasons this kind of approach for the video has a remarkable way of keeping attentions. Great work!
I normally get very bored with videos that feature just stock videos, but this kept on to the end. As many has said, Johnny and his team are master storytellers, able to combine various elements to drive the narrative home.
Man, I felt like I just experienced the struggles and history of Humanity in exploring Antarctica. Thanks Johnny. This is my favourite video especially the soundtrack. ❤
That was awesome! As Tasmanians we’ve always had a strong mental connection with Antarctica due to being the primary international port/base for expeditions and shipping and (likely) the fact Australia maintains the largest territorial claim. Learned a lot about the continent in school. One day I’ll visit…
I always wonder what the world was like before civilization spread to every corner of the globe, when most of the world was a complete mystery to everyone. I bet the feeling of discovering new, fertile, and uninhabited land was indescribable, let alone finding Antarctica.

One of your best videos, Johnny! Amazing job. Also, fun to see Norway on the map. We don't get mentioned too often, so nice to see. We also were the first to the North pole, I believe, and America, Greenland, and Iceland :-)
Norway is mighty popular actually. Also my favourite country after my own though they are vastly different in climate and culture
@@hydrolifetech7911 Oh, what country do you live in?
I’ve been watching Johnny for years now, since his borders days, and this tops everything! The poetic storytelling is just brilliant!
I loved this! I hope you make more videos in this style, it was immersive and inspiring!
My gosh what a masterpiece. The story, the visuals, the music...16 minutes of pure gold! Amazing work ❤
Loved the music. Gave the story a sense of sadness of an epic story whose conclusion was not the fairy tail that we had hoped for. Well done.
I’ve been so excited since you first announced there’s going to be a video on this. The exploration stories are the stuff of legend.
Uninhabited? The Empire of the Pingus would like to have a word with you.
I am a long time viewer. Haven’t commented just wanted to say that getting these videos for free is a huge blessing. This is Netflix quality stuff. Well done.
This information really makes the Piri Ries map more of a spectacle. Made in 1513 as a compilation of a bunch of older maps. One third of it exists and Antarctica is said to be drawn on the bottom.
yet no mention by Johnny. Pretty lame
How do you end up making so many amazing videos, within such a short space of time? You are truly a gift, marvellous storytelling
Everything's just so spectacular - from the story itself to how it's told visually and audibly and importantly with which message. Thank you, Johnny and Team! Please keep training in that format
This video felt different, felt emotional, felt inspiring!
Thanks Johnny for making a video essay in this format!!
u r indian mate
@@athelstan5794 what's your problem?
This was one of the most beautifully produced episodes thus far! Thank you 👏
Incredible video. The soundtrack, imagery and storytelling are beyond next level.
The echoing "Map .. map .. map" at 12:43 man 🥶. Gave me chills
more mapping content 🤤 also loving the slightly different vibe and editing style on this one
That was wonderful Johnny, thank you! It's great to see what can be achieved when we set aside our pride and focus on working together.
The soundtrack for this video was beautiful... cinematic quality actually.
Johnny is an absolute beauty with the reporting lately, keep um coming
Beautifully portrayed the story of Antarctica. Hats off to this great storytelling !
You alive sir?
The score and narration on this is magnificent. You guys do bloody amazing work! 👌
This is and your other videos are just so awesome.. Johnny Harris and the team your doing a tremendous job.. your videos and just refreshing and very educative
A very poetic kind of storytelling. Great job Johnny and the team
This was an incredible video. Your script was like poetry and I learned to look at the world in a different way. Thank you for opening up history and the world to us.
When humans work together we can really do some cool stuff. Great story!
Great work!
I agree. I was completely engaged.
That was absolutely beautiful!Masterful storytelling, with gorgeous visuals and a soundtrack that hits you deep in the core.
This is a really awesome video. Hope you guys keep making ones like this.
Flat earther seeing this 😢
I normally get very bored with videos that feature just stock videos, but this kept on to the end. As many has said, Johnny and his team are master storytellers, able to combine various elements to drive the narrative home.
Fantastic work! Maps are so fun! Thank you for sharing so many of yours :)
Man, I felt like I just experienced the struggles and history of Humanity in exploring Antarctica. Thanks Johnny. This is my favourite video especially the soundtrack. ❤
I've read a lot about Antarctica but the way John presents is like learning something new.
That was awesome! As Tasmanians we’ve always had a strong mental connection with Antarctica due to being the primary international port/base for expeditions and shipping and (likely) the fact Australia maintains the largest territorial claim. Learned a lot about the continent in school. One day I’ll visit…
Whaaaat no youre not new zealand is lol we have the international antarctic centre here n everything. Nz is closest
Btw my irish n english convict ancestors stowed away on a ship to nz after being prisoner labourers in hobart - never been but id love to go
Australia's claim really is something. It practically doubles the country's land area.
As always, the maps are on point. You have to do a series on your map collection.
I second this motion!
Johnny, you are a legend. me and my friends wait ansiously for your videos just to discuss about it right after.
You always do an excellent job, but I found this piece exceptionally well-written and delivered. It's an entirely new genre; poetic documentary
I always wonder what the world was like before civilization spread to every corner of the globe, when most of the world was a complete mystery to everyone. I bet the feeling of discovering new, fertile, and uninhabited land was indescribable, let alone finding Antarctica.
