As the world gets warmer due to man-made climate change, geopolitical competition is heating up in the arctic. And Greenland is finding itself at the center of this competition, as world superpowers fight each other for economic influence and geopolitical control.

I know you’re a map nerd, Johnny. I remember when I was taught cartography at the University, I’ve been hundred times told about the importance of using the correct and valid data sources for my maps. With all due respect, Johnny, what was the source of data for your maps(country images, to be precise) in your video? Do you consider Crimea as a Russian territory? Do you think it’s correct to ignore international laws and treaties and display territories by de facto control? Thank you
Not a Trumper but it seems like cognitive dissonance to trash Trump for wanting Greenland, after you just went on about how important it is.
No one is trashing Trump because he wanted Greenland, people are trashing Trump because he thought the Greenlandic people could be bought and fucking sold.
Was looking for someone to bring this up. Johnny is a bleeding heart liberal who hates America so of course he hates Trump. His bias comes through in every video he makes. His videos are good, but they would be way better if he kept his personal beliefs out of it.
Not when his rhetoric did more harm than good.
The hate for Trump is so big that they're okay with the current president not even being able to debate for re-election 🤦
Trump clearly didn´t like his idea called absurd which is what the danish PM did.
I feel like you missed an opportunity to tell the crazy story of how a single rogue Danish diplomat secured a deal with America to open a military base in Greenland while Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany. Important point in the history of a long alliance between Denmark and USA.

BRICS seeks to create a new currency, considering gold's historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange. However, the functionality and acceptance of a gold-backed currency in the current global financial system are uncertain. Creating a new currency requires careful consideration of economic, political, and logistical factors.
The discussions and proposals surrounding BRICS nations' potential use of gold are intriguing. People choose to buy gold for various reasons, such as its historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange, its potential as a hedge against inflation or currency devaluation, and its relative scarcity compared to other commodities. Gold also offers diversification benefits to investment portfolios due to its low correlation with stocks and bonds.
I find gold investment reliable and aim to buy more to recover losses. Silver is also a good investment but differs from my collectibles. Clear investment goals and education are crucial. A video about geopolitics of Greenland that doesn't clearly discuss Greenland's relationship to Denmark is strange. Not once was it explicitly mentioned that Greenland is a part of The Kingdom of Denmark (now by choice), which makes Denmark a central player in the arctic too. This video shockingly highlighted the US-centrism - mentioning only US interests and the ones of its rival China.
well it's not like Denmark will disagree with USA if they want to stay in NATO.
@@AshrakAhmed that is no excuse to ignore the role Denmark has to play. And it is to be noted that Denmark has refused to "sell" Greenland to the US several times even if they are allies.
The key to understanding here is that this is episodic content. Some of that colonialism by Denmark was discussed in the previous episode about Greenland. Not every detail needs to be repeated in every episode.
Because the US is preying on Greenland. Old school imperialism at play. This video is priming you to accept it when it happens. This is how the us functions. They use the power of soft propaganda to achieve goals

I am from Denmark and it’s crazy to me that we own such a significant geographical location. But Johnny you did event mention us lol, and you say they are building diplomatic relations with Greenland, but they are building diplomatic relationships with Denmark.

Let's not pretend Greenland is even remotely self-sustaining. They live off nearly half a billion dollars annually from Denmark for approximately 50K people. I support Greenlandic independence morally, but we're a long way away from it being financially viable, and realistically you'd end up being financially chained by worse countries instead.

I well know, that Denmark isn't a superpower by any means, but since Greenland is part of our realm and have members represented in our Parliament, a bit more mention on Denmarks role in this question would have been nice.
A major reason for the US being able to build all those bases was Denmarks Nato membership and alliance with the USA. We the Danish had no reasons to complain about them strengthening the defense against a possible Soviet threat.
That's why alliances are so important. We have similar interests. And more can be accomplished as a team. Despite the Soviet Union being disbanded, Russia is still looking for new ways to grow in power and influence. Now China is in the mix so it will be interesting to see how things play out in the future.

the question we should be asking is how Greenland even went to China to make deal in the first place?

cause USA money is coming into the country uninterrupted cause Denmark said so, don't matter what Greenlanders think.
Not true anymore.
Greenland is relatively independent in its governance though. The deals that he was talking about are not directly proposed to the Danish government. They are proposed to Greenland and the governance there. It has it's own prime minister and everything.

The great irony is that the association with Denmark is probably more valuable than is realized. Greenland would be wise to maintain connections with Scandinavia even if it becomes completely independent. Small countries in the North that have managed to maintain independence from the whims of the larger powers and actually have outsized influence and power in the world themselves is a model these Nordic countries have mastered.

There's so much that Denmark is making out of Greenland,. just in the fishing industry there are cods, halibuts, shrimps, crabs, caviars and so much more that comes from Greenland.
And because The US has a military base in Greenland, Denmark saves tons of money, when they're paying to NATO.

As someone in the Space Force, I think you mixed up the intent of Thule Air Base. It's not meant to detect a Russian invasion over the arctic (a crazy idea that should never be attempted in the first place), it's meant as the newer version of the very radars you visited. It's a phased array radar site to detect Russian ICBMs. Due to the shorter distance between Russia and the U.S over the Arctic, Russian nuclear missiles have always been anticipated to fly over the North Pole. Thus, Thule is THE most strategically important base for the U.S in the event of Nuclear war. When it's not detecting missiles though, it's tracking space objects. Hence why it's becoming a Space Force base.

Keep your hands off, thieves! The Arctic Ocean belongs to Albania!

Don't Icebreaker ships increase the rate of ice loss around the poles? I have always wondered this.
Great video boss!
can you do a followup on your shampoo video? there has been a recent increase in interest regarding that topic in my country
I'm happy to see you covering this. Greenland is so interesting to me.
"That was a crazy four years, im glad it's over"..😂 because now is calm😂
I find it more amazing how any country can fight over something they don’t own.
I guess it makes for good fodder for the -sheep- voters, by shifting focus from important internal matters to instead fuel the idea of how to become larger and even more powerful... Who cares if it's not actually plausible :)
Error 0:49 the dish is part of the old Instrument Landing System for the airport, not missle defense.
10:53 thank god America has sleepy Joe, right Johnny?
where did he imply that it was better in the vid?
@@jojosiwadrillremixmp3141 where did I imply he said that?
I was just watching the Danish political drama called Borgen Power and Glory, also about the control or possibly the independence of Greenland after oil was discovered in Ilulissat. Goes to show that mere coincidence did happen halfway through the show. There're nations like China and Denmark's short treaty along with the U.S and Russia mounting in control whoever gets the oil or military equipment first.
Bro your production value is so fucking good. When you cut together the news reports it always looks like the intro of a Call of Duty campaign😂
“Get to speed on everything you need to know” 🧐🤨 @donutmedia! Good one John
China trying to get their hands on Greenland despite being literally on the other side of the world and getting rejected is hilarious to me lol
and whats your stance on America?
@@ellishaindobo1794 I would much rather have America aiding Greenland than China. And judging by the actions of the owner of Greenland, Denmark, they also think so as well.
@@ellishaindobo1794 You can at least make the argument Russia and the US are near Greenland.
Typical China. They'd probably make something up like Greenland belonging to them since ancient times. Is there a 9 dash line?
@@taylor_drift1 Why would you rather have America aiding Greenland than China?
The arctic was important in the cold war because all of the nuclear ICBMs would be flying over it as it was the shortest route between the US and the USSR. So the early warning was designed against missiles and not a ground invasion.
No wonder only 50K lived under the interception zone.
There seems to be a video in your story block ad!
not even universities can teach like you do in your video, ow you deserve so much more
In 1951, the US negotiated a treaty with NATO founding member Denmark giving the US military permission to station troops in defense of Greenland. Its base at Thule plays an important role in NORAD's early detection of ICBMs launched over the Pole. It hosts F-35s year-round and often stages RCAF elements during exercises.
Greetings from Denmark. We love you guys up there, despite what our idiots in charge have done in the past. We'd be sad to see you leave, but want nothing but the very best for you as long as you let us come visit sometimes :)
Would be cool to see a video about Norway's experience in the Arctic (vs Russia and now China).
Real journalism is sooooo refreshing
People and countries should look for ways to take care of our Planet, to see what can be done so that the ice does not continue to melt instead of exploiting every single inch of this Planet.
Team USA and Denmark! Keep Greenland with the West!
only if thats what the local people want
Can anyone recommend a similar lens to the one he uses in this video? I know his lenses are all Sony but I use a Canon DSLR and I love the quality of this lens 😢
The economic boost from this is going to be HUGE
Your visuals and storytelling never cease to amaze me. Thank you Johnny!
