I just stumbled on this video and can honestly say I've never cleaned my sewing room scissors in 62 years! I've collected many pairs over the years and intend to give them all a good going over. So informative. Thanks so much.
I appreciate your wealth of knowledge! I just acquired some old Wiss pinking shears. The cut is beautiful but the hinge feels "gummed up" inside. I know now just what to try to get them working like I know they can. Thank you so much!
After watching your video I cleaned a pair of my mothers old pinking shears that I've had for years and they look brand new now .... I would never had thought to clean scissors which thinking about now is very logical..thanks again Laura...now I'm going to get those scissors professional sharpened
Laura, I vote that you get a special place in heaven for so consistently giving us such important tips and teaching that bless us in our sewing, organization and care of our things. And for other household tips like the fitted sheets. (What kind of plant is the gorgeous one on your bedside table??) I watched a video recently that told how it's good to use alcohol wipes to clean one's gardening tools, one of the benefits being to kill bacteria that can be spread by the tool. But I wouldn't do that on my metal sewing notions. The sewing oil is such a smart idea for getting the metal parts of our notions clean! I look forward to each of your videos. You're like the Heloise of the sewing room and more.
Sue you are very kind. And if you need to use alcohol just be sure to give them a little drop of oil. the plant is part of the lily family, sorry I do not know the name:)
SewVeryEasy Thank you, Laura, and I will always end with putting oil on! By the way, I'm still waiting to move so haven't followed up, but will when "All systems are 'go.!!'"
a woman after my own heart; I, too, clean my scissors - carefully, ha ... First time hearing of sewing machine oil for this purpose ... great tip and thank you for that
I love these tips. I never thought that dyes would hurt the plastic handles. I'm going to give all my scissors a good cleaning. I would like to see a tutorial on sharing pinking sheers. I don't have anywhere in my town to sharpen scissors.
No matter what the content of your tutorial is you always give us such great information. Where do you purchase sewing machine oil? I assume it could be purchased where sewing machines are sold, but could you also purchase from a hardware store? Thank you Laura for all of your tutorials, you're such a great teacher and I have learned so much from you!
I always use alcohol and it seems to work great but I only clean them when I have glue or something sticky on them. I will try the sewing oil though I am sure it would be best around the screw area.
@@SewVeryEasy I am glad to hear it from you; I was hesitant to try it. I saw some other videos recommending "any " oil, even salad oil, so I know to be skeptical unless I hear it on SewVeryEasy.
petmom ful That is an old wives tale. If you cut foil it may seem for a few cuts to be sharp, but it really just destroys them. Take our scissors to a knife sharpener. If you don't know where to take them, go to a fine dining restaurant between 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon when they aren't as busy and ask the chef. They won't mind telling you and make sure that the sharpener knows that they were suggested by the chef at .....
Really? Thanks for telling me. How does it destroy them? I do have a knife sharpener near me, in a sewing machine parts shop. I will go there from now on.
karen griebe They make an iron cleaner. It comes in a tube, like toothpaste. You put some on a damp cloth and wipe iron while it is medium hot. It works great and you will be amazed at how dirty your iron really is. Maggie
karen griebe: Take a Mr. Clean white magic eraser, wet it and squeeze out excess, place on old towel and rub your hot iron over it several times. It works. You may need to wet the sponge two to three times. It works and no harsh smells.
I cleaned and oiled all of my scissors before I packed them to move. I also wrapped each separately in acid free tissue paper. The man who sharpens them said it would keep them from bouncing into each other. We'll see how they faired if I ever get to that box to open. So many boxes.
I see your last videos are not available . If they are "live" how can I watch them? I am fairly new to youtube.... I will miss them, as they are among my favorites on you tube.
Thanks for this great information, Laura. :D This is something I've never thought to do other than wiping with a damp cloth. Looks like I'll be cleaning scissors for quite a while. :D LOL xoxoJanet
Step-by-step guide on how to take care of your pet scissors Step 1: bathe your scissors. It may seem silly, but washing your scissors can make them feel clean and happy, and of course you want your beloved pet to be happy! Anyways; *proceeds to show the video*
Just a video making tip: Try not talking to your audience like they are 3-year-olds. As well, your 8 minute video could have been cut down to a maximum of 3 minutes and it could have conveyed the same amount of information. In this age of the internet, people have short attention spans.
I find Laura's videos to be perfect, just the right amount of explanation and no useless yack-yack-yack. If someone has a short attention span, that's a problem to be dealt with by that person.

Thank you! I never thought to do this, even though my husband used to oil and clean his woodworking and hand tools.
I know it is just something we never think to do:)

I didn't think to use oil on the scissors, makes perfect sense! Now when you oil your machine, clean your scissors at the same time!
that would work for sure!
great tips!. any ideas on sharpening them?
Someone told me that if you cut aluminum foil a couple of times, it will sharpen them.

I only have them sharpen by a professional.

My new ones will be on my channel. The older one was just a test:) thanks for asking
Won't the oil on the scissor blades stain the fabric when used to cut with?
Just cut scrap fabric to make sure all the oil is off the blade. I usually cut 3-5 cuts through 2 layers of cotton material.
Thanks for your great advice
thanks for watching
great tip! i must confess i had stuck mine in the dishwasher lol then oiled but wont do that again.
Denise Mcintosh p
You are not alone. The key is to make sure that they are very dry after, and then oil them:)
Is it safe to wash the towel in the washing machine with other clothes after it gets sewing machine oil on it? And isn't the oil flammable?
I wash it quick by hand then toss it in with my rags :)
Can you advice how to sharpen your scissors ? Thanks
My best advice is to go to a professional. My scissors are one of my best friends, and needs the right care. It is well worth it:)

Why waste your life cleaning scissors? They are so cheap to buy, just replace when too far gone.
