One of the reasons why Katie Ka-Boom is among the least-liked Animaniacs characters is because she's a Karma Houdini. She never gets punished for her violent and destructive behavior because her parents are too frightened of her to properly discipline her.
Trina Riffin in that case, she’s like a Canadian reincarnation of Katie Ka-Boom, but much worse. But unlike Katie Ka-Boom, she didn’t get turned into a violent destructive monster when she loses it, but rather go into Diary Mode, and she did get any other form of karma, especially in the Grojband series finale, "Hear Us Rock" which she got what she deserves as when Mina Beff stood up to her as a revenge.
What's worth mentioning - and what is worthy of praise - is that Katie's mutated forms are grotesque even by "Animaniacs" standards, and they really stand out amidst the "cute" 1940s-like designs of the rest of the characters. i got the sense I was watching "Ren & Stimpy" or one of the especially surreal episodes of the first season of the "The Simpsons," rather than a Warner Brothers cartoon. However, I didn't appreciate this diversity of styles at the time, since I watched "Animaniacs" precisely for its "retro" style and sense of humor, which really appealed to me in the midst of a sea of otherwise "hip" cartoons.
Chicken Boo is my favorite sketch. There's something about a giant chicken doing normal people things without anyone realizing that he's a chicken, and the chicken not even really giving off like he knows what he's doing (most often just acting like a chicken that wandered in), that just makes me laugh every time.
I find it disingenuous that the reboot had the audacity to say Chicken Boo was the worst character when Katie's entire character was "Teen girls are moody, manipulative monters". My theory is that the female writers on the reboot (if there in fact were female writers on there) didn't want to cone across as "hating their own sex" because I'm pretty THEY were teenagers at one point and were probably a less exaggerated version of Katie in their own right. Or.... they just thought Chicken Boo was the less popular character they could easily mock instead of a hair triggered, self-aware monster of a teen girl.
Turning Red had a much solid idea than this. Also, you could see Kevin The Teenager by Harry Enfield because it has a similar premise but a better presentation.
Honestly, along with Buttons and Mindy. The Katie Kaboom shorts are the weakest out of all the reoccurring shorts in Animaniacs because of how incredibly unpleasant they are If Katie's parents were incredibly dislikable, I'd understand Katie getting as angry as she does. But that's not what the shorts do though, as she blows up at them for some of the most small and minor things you could think of Especially in the Bellybutton Blues short where she. No joke, snaps at them because they asked her to change her shirt. When that is a completely reasonable thing to request, because Katie's mom doesn't want her to get laughed at because she's showing her Bellybutton I can see why she got mad at her brother. Because he was making fun of her without stopping once, but her snapping at her parents was very unwarranted
At least Chicken Boo had that earworm of a theme song. Katie had nothing funny or likable about her. I thought back then it was a thinly disguised analogy for PMS. Every episode was like them saying it's that time of the month. I think Katie should come back as a Karen. I think it would be funny she as an adult she still gets upset over trivial matters still. Like, getting up early to carpool neighborhood kids this week, having to take off her hat in divorce court or the discontinuation of her favorite snack. She is utterly miserable and blames everything and everyone. Her kids tune her out. Her ex ignores her. Her job is in the basement of the warehouse because no one can stand to be around her. 😂
Funny you mention Chicken Boo, it's a cruel irony that not only she debuts on a sketch that features Chicken Boo, but her theme song is a blatant carbon copy of his theme.
Still better than the Buttons segments. I can't stand the abuse the writers heaped on that poor dog. The only one I liked was when they switched him out with Brain.
I think the main thing that I liked about this character were the weird monster transformation bits that I thought looked kind of cool. But the rest of what you say I think is a good point. Mostly with her rage out monster stuff being towards people that don't deserve it and it kind of being like a teenagers are crazy kind of segment and stuff. woah, did not know there was a comic for the character. That's kind of neat that they gave her a little more characterization in that. but I like your idea of maybe having the writers kind of maybe making a choice as far as her alignment. as far as being a chaotic evil character that uses her monster mode stuff to get what she wants. Or maybe Chaotic Good where she's working on the destruction monster mode thing, but her heart is in the right place when she tries to set it towards the targets that deserve it. But maybe have her alignment different from the Warner Siblings somehow so that she's a reskinned version of them or something. hearing these notes you've just provided in their too late attempt to fix her was really encouraging and nice to hear. i'd love to see someone else try a little more in the direction that the comic was pushing and expanding her character a little more. would've been great in the show proper like you said and i doubt they'd consider these notes for that 2020 series. But i'd love to see someone maybe do a fancomic every once and a while or something trying something.
Well-done video! Honestly, I think the reboot writers had serious GALL claiming that Chicken Boo was the most hated character when Katie Kaboom, which has outright offended a major portion of Animaniacs's fans for sexism, ageism, and possibly even making light of domestic abuse, was right there. I haven't gotten far enough in my viewing of the series to see Katie Kaboom yet, but the clips you showed did a great job at showing how scary she truly is. Keep up the great work at Media Mementos!
I loved your suggestions on making even Katie Kaboom a much better character. Especially her feud with her monstrous cousin - which ends on a wholesome note. Another BIG missed opportunity in the 2020 revival.
When it comes to bad media,my mind always tries to find a way to fix it (The TTG "Waffles" episode being an over the top fighting episode between Cyborg and Beast Boy for a waffle [with some anime style] for example),but with Katie Kaboom, she is a hard one to fix. The only thing it comes to mind is Tinker - Katie's young brother - being the only one to know her monster form (due to her being his babysitter on most of the time while his parents are doing adult stuff) and so,being the only one to defend his neighboorhood. In this case scenario,Katie wouldn't know her condition and her monster forms attacks anyone in near sight, but unlike the show, we see Tinker using cartoon logic (which leads to mix results). I truly don't know how to fix her, all my mind came with her was "What if Tom and Jerry had to fight Godzilla* - i know it is a bad idea and i hope i can have something better, but for now, that's all my mind has to offer
You know i've always figured a way to improve Katie would be to include her in the reboot only she is grown up and can control her monster powers, I would like to know how she somehow gained the ability to transform whether or not it's a 'family curse' scenario or that it is passed down through generations.
I was thinking about this while watching the video. Thinking about "What if Katie Kaboom was turned into a good 'Karen?'" The type of Karen who chews out bad employees or other stuff that's not right in the world. Instead of Teen Rage against a well meaning family, turn Katie against an unjust world filled with awful people who deserve to be yelled at. And before anyone says I am being mean and that no one deserves to be subjected to Karens. 1. This a cartoon, so you don't need to depict the realism of people. 2. My mom has done a lot of Karen like things in the name of advocacy for me and others with disabilities. Karen Energy can be used for good as well as evil.
Katie Kaboom did appear in a crossover skit. In "The Big Wrap Party Tonight" (a.k.a. "The New Year's Party Tonight"), she quickly transformed into a monster during the lyric "Katie Kaboom can clear out a room."
I hate her because my family used her to make fun of me constantly. It was a joke, ofc but i also asked if i was the family villain and they said yes so...
My mom tends to call me " Katy Kaboom " and sing the theme song to poke fun of my Mood swings She doesn't do it with malicious intent and she simply thought it would be funny, Still though it gets under my skin and if not infuriating me even more..
Once my mom bought me, the Animaniacs DVDs, I always skipped over Katie kaboom. I just could not handle the stupidity. Granted, I had a very similar temper as Katie when I was a kid, but even as a kid, I knew my temper was due to certain things that I could not control. So at least there was a reason behind my temper, and eventually as I grew up and life turned away from the things that really hurt me, my temper just faded away. But Katie, what’s the reasoning behind her temper? That she’s not getting her way? That’s just stupid. There is nothing fun about it when Animaniacs supposed to be fun. Katie kaboom went out with a Pop Instead of a kaboom.. and she deserved her decal failure, and let’s face it, the guy who came up with it, what a loser. And the company who chose to cut out, Minerva mink, thinking we’re all going to turn into sexual dinosaurs because of Minerva, no. We were children, not stupid. we knew there was Way we are supposed to act around others, and we knew that cartoons were supposed to be fun and not a representation of real life. If those people in charge of making these cartoons could not realize that, then there was no hope To creating Animaniacs 2020 because they were just keep repeating the same damn mistakes.
I'll admit to actually enjoying the 'Katie Kaboom' skits for what they were, but then, I saw A video from 'Familiar Faces' talking about the skits don't work, and you make an excellent point here. Any antagonist that's pitted against The Warners, or Slappy Squirrel are flat out jerks, (Except for Dr. Scratchinsniff.) and it's very satisfying to see them get their comeuppance. Katie's family, however AREN'T jerks. They're A nice normal family who are just trying to help her out.
What about Squit, from the Goodfeather shorts? He, just like Katie's parents and brother, also never deserved the punishment from Pesto, but that is the whole joke, I guess.
(When tinker 13th birthday ) Katie: why do I have to be stuck here when I can be out with my friends! Mom: but it’s your brother birthday Dad: you only turn 13 once. Katie: grrrr you two are so unfair!!! Tinker: …… mom , dad leave the house. I’ve been waiting this for a long time. Mom: let’s not. Dad: now honey it’s normal to let siblings fight things out
Corey: Believe it or not Tinker, your sister reminded me of my sister, Trina. Tinker: Yeah, I agree with you Core. My sister does remind you of your sister, since she and Trina had shared similarities towards each other.
Despite Katie Kaboom being a short tempered mutating teenage girl it was still funny in a way. I would always imagine she needed anger management classes or someone like Professor X (X-Men) to help her with her mutating anger.
Who knew so many people who watched Animaniacs grew up insufferable? Oh no, the cartoon that was definitely not made to be an afterschool special for kids put out messages that definitely don’t align with my current woke sensibilities! Why weren’t they moralizing at everyone?! 😡
@@Thenumber1yoshi Oh cool. It's been a while I watched Wakko's Wish (aka the last WBA production to be animated at TMS, not counting Superman vs. The Elite and Justice League: Doom).
I just can't hate Kaite Ka-Boom. She's alright but not bad in my opinion. Though her monster designs are really good. Thanks to Wang, Akom, and Freelance, the animation is crazy in her shorts. Out of all the shorts I find alright, Katie is the one I find her most alright with. Amazing video as always, V! ❤
Even tho I agree that I definitely prefer the animal-related Animaniacs shorts (like the trio of the same name, Pinky and the Brain, Slappy Squirrel, those pigeons and Chicken Boo), I think the shorts were still pretty funny.
The weak link of Animaniacs was the Warner brothers and their sister Dot. I suffered through them to see Aunt Slappy, Pinky and the Brain, the Goodfeathers, Boo, Randy Beemis, Mindy and her dog...Katie Ka-Boom, yeah, I guess it was too real.
Katie Kaboom is really awful because her joke, Mindy's, and the Goodfeathers only work once - and I haven't even actually watched the entire show. Let me explain why Goodfeathers sucks: Goodfeathers basically has the same repetitive problem as Katie Kaboom does, except with pigeon mafia/Godfather jokes rather than teenage hormone jokes - but because the punchline isn't weirdly sexist toward teenage girls like Katie Kaboom's, it gets a pass.
People have been overreaching to this character for years now. Anyone who's ever raised a teenager should know the hilarious parody this conveys. You take it way to seriously
Sorry about Minerva, but Katie is actually one of my favorite characters in the show. The first episode of her that I watched was "Driving Lessons" and I started to like her ever since. Even though I'm a male, I used to be a teenager with anger issues, so I understand her character. I feel bad for her family, but I'm also amazed with how much they care for her. Now that's what a real family is all about in my opinion.
Like a lot of people suggested, here’s how I would’ve fixed katie and her segments. First, have her get mad at mean people that deserve it. A bully, a corrupt teacher, a creep who cat calls her, a rival of hers, someone mean instead of innocent people. Second, have her hold in her anger throughout the short as a mean person messes with her but she doesn’t snap right away, until near the end when the last straw is broken and she goes monster mode and attacks that person. Third, instead of her family fearing her and not disciplining her, they would be used to her outbursts and view them as this is entirely expected and mundane. Her parents would remain stern and calm as they deal with Katie and reason with her or punish her for the damage she caused.
Forgive me, but I will stand alone in loving this. Maybe because I don't see the Abuse or domestic violence, or my humor just runs sadistically. But I love it. I love the over the top reactions, the monster scenes, and the destruction. I love monster movies, so sue me
Why not instead of her family turned into monsters and they finally snap, let’s make her family snap and scold Katie for her crimes, while not being turned into monsters?

Actually, my sister and I used to laugh at some of her skits. I still do, by the way. It's funny, if you don't take it too seriously. The Driving Lesson was one of the better ones. The Blemish was just stupid. She irrationally lost her temper over something with a seemingly obvious solution: Concealer! The Broken Date was funny, especially when she tried to act nonchalant about her date's tardiness. Belly Button Blues was O.K. Just like The Blemish, the solution was glaringly obvious: If your parents won't let you wear a crop top to school, wear a sweater! Duh! 🙄The skits seemed to have varied in quality. But I wouldn't call her my favorite.
Gonna be completely honest... I don't like Animaniacs in general, and part of the problem to me is I find MOST of the characters as unlikable as Katie. At best, most of them are just bland and annoying, focusing entirely on one gag. At worst, they're all unlikable jerks. I could rant more but eh. These days the only character I really like is Slappy Squirrel. But I still would not choose to watch her shorts over, say, Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates.
Personally, I think the weak link of Animaniacs was the Hip Hippos. Never got them. Katie Kaboom...I grew up with a sister. Things happened. Just saying.
In my guess, she reminds me of Trina Riffin from Grojband due to their similarities towards each other. But unlike Katie Ka-Boom, Trina usually gets what she deserves, especially in the Grojband series finale episode, "Hear Us Rock". Where Mina had finally snapped as she'll start standing up to Trina for the way she treated her in almost every episode.

I’m going to throw in a hot take and say that Katie Kaboom is the SECOND worst player on Animaniacs. For me, the first is Mindy & Buttons. Rewatching the show on Netflix many years ago made me realize how much of a pain Mindy was and how much I felt sorry for Buttons.
She's not the best but I enjoyed her skits more than Chicken Boo's. At least the transformations are creative whereas Chicken Boo is the same unfunny joke every time.
I always thought she was a mutant. They could've had a great joke about that! "Do you think she's like um..special? Like the guys on the super team on that other channel?" "We don't talk about...the other channel."
said it before I'll say it again, she would've been FAR better if she was her own series separate from Animaniacs, clearly there was inspiration and creativity there, but you can't actually flesh out her story and build on who she and her family are in just a couple minutes. but if she was given her own show she could've easily been like "Billy and Mandy before Billy and Mandy" or something. I dunno, room for thought.
I feel like they should have gone with relatable anger for her instead of a stereotypical teenage temper tantrum. So that it could actually feel cathartic when she explodes on someone who deserves it after holding back. That could actually work really great if in a Warners skit she ends up in their crossfire multiple times until she's tired of their shit, goes monster mode and chases them back into the water tower. Like for example she steps out of her house three times in a nice outfit ready for a date or something, and three times it gets ruined by mud, a splash of water or other stuff. She'd walk back indoors increasingly angry, trying to hold back and the third time she has had it with them. She could work great as a supportive character like that, I don't think she works in a leading role. That intro tune is catchy though.
i never watched the original animaniacs, but afeter i seeing this review, it´s no suprised why she´s so hated by the fan base. In contrats to donald duck, he was also easy irritable by anything, but he works because his actions had consewuences for him, even when he was a jerk in some shorts.

Before Aggrestuko and Turning Red, There Was This
Same for Star vs and Teenage Kraken
What about Trina Riffin from Grojband?
And Horrid Henry when he got angry
They should've focused on Katie in School instead. Her going crazy against Bullies
What if the Warners had to babysit Katie? That could've been funny
oh! Bouncing off of that, what if Katie had a babysitting job? And she had to babysit Mindy from Buttons and Mindy somehow.
@@JustinCoastersThat is NOT happening!!!!
it would be fun if Riley in Inside Out 2 acted like a perfected Katie Kaboom
The way her family are constantly cowering behind things rings too true to real domestic abuse.
Chicken Boo deserves more love
Makes sense why she’s the only one left out of the direct-to-video finale film Wakko’s Wish!
As a teenager I had a foster parent who behaved like Katie Kaboom far more than I ever did.
They didn't know what they were talking about. Just used it as a means to have him be a major plot point with his disguises in that episode.
@@Thenumber1yoshiNo she had a cameo
Turning Red had a much solid idea than this. Also, you could see Kevin The Teenager by Harry Enfield because it has a similar premise but a better presentation.
Katie character trait was done with Laura Limple from Kids Next Door and Ed of all people when he got a pebble in his shoe
Laura Limple is basically the Darla Dimple from Cartoon network
Honestly, along with Buttons and Mindy. The Katie Kaboom shorts are the weakest out of all the reoccurring shorts in Animaniacs because of how incredibly unpleasant they are
If Katie's parents were incredibly dislikable, I'd understand Katie getting as angry as she does. But that's not what the shorts do though, as she blows up at them for some of the most small and minor things you could think of
Especially in the Bellybutton Blues short where she. No joke, snaps at them because they asked her to change her shirt. When that is a completely reasonable thing to request, because Katie's mom doesn't want her to get laughed at because she's showing her Bellybutton
I can see why she got mad at her brother.
The only one I liked was when they switched him out with Brain.
their the both the worst segments
That patreon roll call at the end was adorable.
I wish they went the comics route and have her monster rage directed at people who deserved it. It would've made for more interesting stories.
I can’t imagine what would happen to Katie when it’s that time of the month.
Did you ever notice that the premise of Katie Kaboom is actually similar to the movie Turning Red
Or maybe, as if Katie Kaboom was similar to Trina Riffin from Grojband?
This show is turning 30!
You forgot to put the Denzel Crocker, Toad, Andy and Ollie, and Duck Guy Character Quest videos in the Character Quest list.
Katie Kaboom did appear in a crossover skit. In "The Big Wrap Party Tonight" (a.k.a. "The New Year's Party Tonight"), she quickly transformed into a monster during the lyric "Katie Kaboom can clear out a room."
I ALWAYS hated Katie Kaboom but I never figured out why. But you hit the nail on the head.
I hate Katie Kaboom she will die and go to hell for being way more evil than Minerva Mink
I hate her because my family used her to make fun of me constantly. It was a joke, ofc but i also asked if i was the family villain and they said yes so...
Katie Kaboom even predicted Trina Riffin from Grojband.
@@BackUp-nx2deHere's the truth about Katie Kaboom she was a test tube experiment
Oh I remember her, she is was ahead of our time as she is what you call a Karen
More like when a Karen was a teenager
My mom tends to call me " Katy Kaboom " and sing the theme song to poke fun of my Mood swings
She doesn't do it with malicious intent and she simply thought it would be funny, Still though it gets under my skin and if not infuriating me even more..
As someone with there own mental issues anger problems, i feel personally attacked by katie kaboom.
(When tinker 13th birthday )
Katie: why do I have to be stuck here when I can be out with my friends!
Mom: but it’s your brother birthday
Dad: you only turn 13 once.
At least Tinker doesn't turn into a monster
Katie Ka-Boom and Trina Riffin even share similarities to each other.
Huh I don't remember her turning into a monster. My memory of her gimmick was that she just blew up like a bomb.
That was my memory of the one short I saw of hers.
Same.
Is it possible that you were scared of her monster designs and tried to erase them from your memory
Even The Loud Sisters would be scared of Katie Kaboom.
Even Corey Riffin would be scared of Katie Kaboom, since Corey stated that she reminded him of his older sister due to their similarities with her.
Weakest segment along with Chicken Boo and Buttons and Mindy.

Despite Katie Kaboom being a short tempered mutating teenage girl it was still funny in a way. I would always imagine she needed anger management classes or someone like Professor X (X-Men) to help her with her mutating anger.
Katie Kaboom mainly predicts Trina Riffin from Grojband due to her wrathful nature.

Katie Kaboom is like Trina Riffin from Grojband.
Nah, one of the best characters. If you're a parent you know this is pre-teens and teens in nearly every situation. Just listen to them online.
Even tho I agree that I definitely prefer the animal-related Animaniacs shorts (like the trio of the same name, Pinky and the Brain, Slappy Squirrel, those pigeons and Chicken Boo), I think the shorts were still pretty funny.
But Katie Kaboom was one of my favorite parts of Animaniacs...
Forgiveness: the action or process of forgiving or being forgiven.
I always saw Goodfeathers was the weakest because it’s just the 3 same jokes over and over but honestly this one is pretty bad too.
2:29 where’s this episode from
Katie Kaboom is really awful because her joke, Mindy's, and the Goodfeathers only work once - and I haven't even actually watched the entire show.
Katie Kaboom? More like ANTONBLAST
For some reason I misread that as “TamponBlast-“
People have been overreaching to this character for years now. Anyone who's ever raised a teenager should know the hilarious parody this conveys. You take it way to seriously
I love Katie Kaboom.
I love katie kaboom. Some people read too much into a light hearted sketch
The monster d signs are cool
I'm like a Katie Kaboom' series where she wants a cure from his ability to transforms into monster and becomes a normal girl.
Forgive me, but I will stand alone in loving this. Maybe because I don't see the Abuse or domestic violence, or my humor just runs sadistically. But I love it. I love the over the top reactions, the monster scenes, and the destruction. I love monster movies, so sue me
Katie Kaboom is at least more memorable than the extras in the reboot. I’d definitely take her over them
Katie Kaboom is too real . I love it when she blows . Battle stations
I loved her
You know what would've worked? Having her family finally snap and turn into monsters against HER.
Oh God Star vs, Turning Red and Ruby Gilman Teenage Kraken AKA Turning Blue had something in common with Katie Kaboom
Why not instead of her family turned into monsters and they finally snap, let’s make her family snap and scold Katie for her crimes, while not being turned into monsters?
What the or hostess doesn’t get is that anything can make Katie go KABOOM . That’s the joke
I'll still watch her cartoons over Mindy & Buttons and the Hip Hippos.

But I wouldn't call her my favorite.
still a better character than rita and runt and mindy and buttons
Before there was Trina Riffin from Grojband
I love Katie lol
my least favorite was the hippos
I’m glad she was not part of the reboot the most because she made her cartoon sketch to be unwatchable.
She kinda reminds me of Tricky the Clown from the Madness Combat series. IDK Why...
In my guess, she reminds me of Trina Riffin from Grojband due to their similarities towards each other. said it before I'll say it again, she would've been FAR better if she was her own series separate from Animaniacs, clearly there was inspiration and creativity there, but you can't actually flesh out her story and build on who she and her family are in just a couple minutes.
but if she was given her own show she could've easily been like "Billy and Mandy before Billy and Mandy" or something.
I kinda liked Katie kaboom as a kid 😂
i never watched the original animaniacs, but afeter i seeing this review, it´s no suprised why she´s so hated by the fan base. In contrats to donald duck, he was also easy irritable by anything, but he works because his actions had consewuences for him, even when he was a jerk in some shorts.
Pretty sure Katie Kaboom is the daughter of The Incredible Hulk.
Him being the Hulk is because of gamma radiation, *not* genetics, so his kids wouldn't 'inherit' it.
