    It's quite incredible how effortless he makes his drumming look. What he's doing is so complex, so many subtle, intricate things going on. This is really something else to watch, getting this close-up of his playing. Thanks so much for this.

    • @yana_2_6_0
      @yana_2_6_0 Год назад +4

      I agree. This track especially, I love the how patient the buildups are (2:14); how the single guitar starts from square one and utilizes a good deal of silence. Then the delay pedal kicks in, and then the drums as they get gradually more complex. I find that kinda thing fun and elegant and it's what makes this my favorite math rock album.

      @@yana_2_6_0 it's actually not a delay pedal! altho I understand that confusion, Ian actually puts the 3 chords in a looper pedal, and then adds a 2nd loop of him playing those 3 chords again but delayed

    Don Caballero might just be one of the most important American pieces of art ever drawn and pulled from the sticky taffy-like ether of creation. It will inspire. It will hurt. It will awe. I'm 42 now and Don Cab has been with me on cross country train rides, heart breaks, death, the soundtrack to novels, and when my wife walked down the aisle to the beginning of Peter Criss Jazz. I am never not entertained and bewildered by Damon and whatever group of musicians that surround this human fucking tornado of talent. I am absoultely grateful for these playthroughs! Please cast your spell with twin wands on those drums like the wizard you are until the god damn wheels come off!

    Probably my favorite DC track and that's saying something. Also the first I ever heard, I was about 13 when it came out, and it really opened me up to new sounds/styles. It makes me really happy to see him do it in full quality like this, so fucking smooth and effortless. As someone who jams along on DC on drums but without a double bass pedal, I really never put together how often and intricate the switches are between hi-hat control and the bass. Very unique as Che's style always is.

    1:46 the way he stops the crash cymbal ringing with his stick, hits the bell on it and then hits the bell on the ride while doing all the other shit he’s doing at the same time. Seriously the master of polyrhythms. My favorite drummer ever.
    Also that hi hat work with his foot. Nobody does that shit. And when he uses his hi hat as a crash cymbal and closes it real quick. What the hell. Amazing.

    Amazing! I think one of the most interesting things about these close up vids is seeing that you're a 'heel down' player on the kick. I'm really surprised you can get that kind of power out of that technique. I guess it should come as much of a surprise since basically everything you hit is different than just about everyone else.

    • @ethanthomas5893

      He's a pretty burly and strong fella which is probably how he generates such velocity with his right foot. I was always surprised by how deft his drumming is in general, prior to seeing them in the 90s I always imagined his style to be more brutish.
      Also, it's super cool to see Justin (Demonic Sweaters) chiming in here. His drumming with Lincoln and Kukim was equally as inspiring to me back in the day as Mr. Che. He rips some of the smoothest and articulate triplets ever!

    This is the first song of Don Caballero I listened to, it was on the radio 20 years ago (a french one called FIP with all kinds of styles, very eclectic). It was a delightful suprise, and I've never stopped listening for this band since then, which is on my top 3 of "musical artists that are very close to my inner child" (or something like this, probably simpler). My favourite song remains Railroad Cancellation. Thanks of lot for sharing these drum plays, and thank you Damon for being such a lunar drummer, with so much personnality and creativity in your style. It inspired me a lot in drumming. Long life to you 😊
