This movie came out at a time from the mid 1990s to early 2000s when studios were making the teen version of classic movies/literature, She's All That is the teen version of Pygmalion/My Fair Lady. Cruel Intention's teen version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses/ Dangerous Liaisons. Clueless/Emma, 10 Things I Hate About You/Taming of the Shrew, O/Othello, The Faculty/Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Easy A/The Scarlet Letter etc. A lot of these teen adaptations were very popular, made money, and are considered classics themselves. My personal favorite is Clueless.🛍
2:44 - Arrrghh I had to tap out on watching this video. I’ve seen this film only once and my biggest pet peeve of people trashing the plot is when they say that Freddie Prinze Jr’s character motivations was to turn an “ugly” girl into prom queen. Obviously Laney Boggs and her actress are not ugly at all - therefore that wasnt the criteria for the bet. It was about how Freddie Prinze Jr could turn an unapproachable, standish off, and fashion avoidant girl into a popular girl. Not that she was ugly! “Scary and inaccessible” were the words to describe her, not ugly, because clearly she wasn’t.
😂 this movie was so huge! We ignored the 🧀-iness of it because we all wanted a Zach Siler. You got usher, lil kim, Paul walker (yum) and so many others. Such a good time. 😂 Side note- I wanted to tell you your eye color is so nice. Then I remembered the line in the movie “ your eyes are really beautiful” 😂🤦♀️
There was a good story element within this film. Both protagonists had a little bit of each other in them. Neither would like to admit what they disliked in eachother was within themselves all along and their lives are stunted from their avoidance of their complete selves. The problem is this trope was done to death in the 80s. So i accept this film for what it is a retelling of a yesteryear storyline with 90s iconography over it.
Not another teen movie is a masterpiece. I think of it whenever i watch this trash. Definitely feel the nostalgia though. The actors we had back then though were pretty 😅
Waited 25 years to finally get some validation about my lifelong dislike of this film, so thank you! Agree with everything you said! Except that it WAS also unintentionally hilarious at the time. “Hac-kee sack!” That’s gold in any year. 😂 Even moreso when ppl still used them irl. Never understood why this was so popular either & you’re right it was crazy popular! I wanna say at the time it even felt, imo, more popular than 10 Things… Maybe bc it had more ppl who were famous irt & HL was still alive, but Ihdk? Dislike it not only bc of the ridiculous premise of RLC being unattractive! But bc like you said the FPJr. storyline is unsympathetic! Also all his romantic “efforts”suck. Like they should’ve never ended up together. Also 80% of the characters are a-holes! I hate how violently mean all the girls are towards Laney. I always think she’s gonna end up hurting herself. Not the vibe you want from a romcom starring any of these amazing ppl! Like I always feel some kind of way about the romance in Pretty in Pink & it’s also full of a-holes, including Blaine imo. But then I see this & realize why it’s actually SO watchable in comparison. And don’t get me started on the makeover! It’s like a top 3 most infuriating movie moment ever! Obvs no stranger to a makeover/montage, but this makeover is EVERYTHING that’s wrong with this & makeovers when the device isn’t used as commentary. Plus they have his sister, played by AP, do it! Like the only non-Boggs character who saw Laney for who she was the whole time! And I can’t even talk about her & Dean & prom. Side note, one of my friends since hs & I just rewatched “The Notebook” online. I haven’t seen it since it came out essentially & she hasn’t seen it in like a decade. And it speaks exactly to what you’re talking about. We were shocked by how emotionally & sometimes physically abusive their relationship was all around! And it was like, “how did this ever seem romantic?!” Hopefully the romcom genre just keeps changing & correcting & progressing healthily fwd! Great video, take care!
ooh you've reminded me about 'not another teen movie'! that was a funny movie- mashing up zach siler & sebastian valmont- & his barmy incestuous sister ('Katherine, no! We're related!' 'only by blood!') was a highlight also 'not another teen movie' owned this useless movie; when Zach is unphased at the idea of making any other girl prom queen except JANIE BRIGGS- the slender pretty artistic girl with GLASSES! And a PONYTAIL! *dryheave dryheave* I was a total plain jane with glasses & a natural unibrow ( which I overplucked so I had a stubbly little smudge of eyebrow over each eye, which I sometimes accidently drew blood from! hot teen princess!) & a girl-tache, no ponytail cause I straightened my hair to sht so my head looked even smaller, good going) & it was v therapeutic to be able to laugh at it. whereas 'she's all that' just made me feel embarrassed & patronised (I was about 13 when it came out, peak awkward)
This isn't what you asked for but I have a feeling Lost Boys might give you plenty to talk about, if you'd stoop to the 80s classic trash? I've never seen SAT but I know every plot beat, & stacked cast, so it must be iconic. I winced at "doing Usher things" but obv none of that's your fault or Usher's. I assume this came out right before the Puff court stuff. I think this was actually the first/original "youth romcom inexplicably ending in a dance scene" bc the director's a choreographer who has other beloved children's media I his portfolio. You made me wonder if the character FPjr plays was canonically white or what the actor's self-understanding is? FP the Dad was a comedy legend who did racially charged standup in that raw, almost confrontational style in the 70s circuit. Clips are all over YT, worth watching. That's such a heavy legacy when FPjr got branded as a jock heart-throb type so young. Just made me curious, the 90s were an odd era. Thanks for the vid.
That's right, andf it is sooo typical of the US. Never before had I had such a-holly persistent and pain-in-the ass predatory stalkers as I had in the States. Also my gay great friend had a creepo persuing him relentlessly, so we always went to his car holding hands after work. It was exasperating that the dudes did not comprehend NOOOO!!!! I finally went out with one guy who stalked me incessantly for 2 yrs, I order the most expensive food and drink and I purposedully behaved horribly and then told him that the date sucked. I felt horrible, but I was at my wit's ends.
Incredible how we’re so conditioned to think this way, that first, you had to placate a stalker by going out with him (which I’m sure can’t have felt safe), and second, you had to make yourself overtly undesirable for him to leave you alone. I think it’s pretty clear you should not have felt horrible, but I also understand why you did and why that’s so messed up in its own way
a lot of 'classics' are GARBAGE, esp. '90s and early '00, and the overwhelming majority of them are the 'coming-of-age' rom-coms, oh, and American ones.
