- Friends, Joseph Campbell and, more recently, Jordan Peterson are very interested in the Jungian archetype of the hero's journey. We see it all over the literature of the world and popular culture, from "The Lord of the Rings" to “Star Wars." But it is also on display very strongly in the Bible. In our remarkable second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews, the author reflects on faith as a sense of trust in God and a willingness to follow him on adventure-in short, as accepting the invitation to a hero’s journey.

I’m 86 years old++ . Everything in my life since birth has been an adventure. I turn my life and will over to God every day. I’ve had some terrible things happen to me….later in my story turned out to be best thing that could have ever happened to me. Thank you God for the adventure of my life!!!
Hello Mary
I to have had many adventures.
God has indeed protected me.
To the point it frightened many witnesses.
Never underestimate God's plan.
Praise God, glad to read your testimony 🙂
You have been Blessed! If only for having gained that perspective, you have been Blessed. Shine on, Sister. My father is also 86. I have the Blessing of having a wonderful relationship with him. We still sail together. He is (we are) still winning races on Lake Saint Clair! He is fearless. He is my hero. I too, by his example, have embarked on a journey, though it wouldn’t have been possible without God and Jesus in my life. I am formerly atheist and am now so grateful for all He has had in store for me and has planned for me. I’ve walked the dark valley and have finally seen the light that guided me and protected me through it all. I have been blessed to know my father AND the Heavenly Father. Life is most certainly an adventure. It’s so good to be living it!!! Grace and Peace be with you and yours ~
God bless you our sister in Christ for one of the most lovely comments I've read in recent times. See you one day on the New Earth! God is great! 🙏🏼
This sermon couldn't have come at a more perfect time! As this video is released, I'm just about move very far from home to begin studying at seminary. I'm sad to leave, but at the same time, I have the sense the I'm at the beginning of a grand adventure.
Bishop Barron, the Holy Spirit used your work to bring me into the Catholic Church, so you and your team are largely responsible for the adventure that God currently has me on. I can't thank you and the Word on Fire team enough. God bless you!
Which seminary, may I ask? God bless you on your adventure.
@@BishopBarron St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. I'm studying for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Thanks again, Your Excellency.
Wow my brother. I enter the Seminary shortly as well. All the best! Pray for me as I'm praying for you.
God bless you on your journey to priesthood. We all know it won't be easy but we know too that God will always be by your side. No matter what obstacles may come your way, hang on to Him.
Praised be Jesus Christ! A blessed journey onward.....
I’m so glad I found this man.
Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Want to just give thanks to God and our lady for you Bishop you are such a blessing to all and I keep you in my daily prayers and ask our lady to wrap her mantle of love and protection over you I may never meet you in this life but I believe in faith we will get to know each other in heaven. I asked for the grace to be able to do all my purgatory here and with God all is possible. Your friend and sister in Christ Mary Lugo.
Savabhavika vipath valak vannaa nathiva dhanya vala arksava ko
Let's us not forget Mary and her journey.
Here's hoping and trusting God that there would be more priests and religious men aspiring to achieve this level of brilliance and theological eloquence in explaining our faith as Bishop Barron
What a marvelous look at our ‘great adventure’ through the Biblical lens…Thanks once more, Bishop Barron, for opening the horizons of faith for me!
The greatest journey of Faith ever taken by a human being was the Fiat of the Blessed Virgin Mary. When she said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to Thy word," do we not hear an echo of Isaiah's, "Here I am lord, send me." ? Antoinette Cleary, Chesterfield Virginia
I'm learning to say to myself as Bishop does, Woe to me if I do not proclaim the Gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ. Praying daily often many times a day, making daily Mass a priority, listening often during the day to where God is speaking through moments in the day, through fellow Christians, and in the Scriptures. May God please grant me fortitude to make the early morning Mass before beginning my workday. May God bless me with His Holy peace of a wholy integrated life of non nisi Te Domini. May God graciously provide His patience that I may, in humility, completely, thoroughly, trust in Him. May I, by and in His divine will, know and do the will of God, loving God above all and willing the good of others as others.
This was EXACTLY what I needed to see today.. one of my favorite sermons ever. The idea of God Himself going on a hero’s journey was so beautiful and inspiring to me. I feel lit on fire to follow my own journey God has called me to! Thank you Bishop Barron for this awesome insight!
After listening to "Go on a Hero's Journey" with Bishop Barron and three times repeated, I have to say for myself that it is another very special sermon that makes us realize how close to God's, our life's journey is patterned... after all, He is our maker! Thank you for another excellent and inspritional explaination.
Hello Bishop Barron. Greetings from Thailand. To me, this is one of the most powerful sermons. Been listening to it for 4 times in a row. It answers one of the hardest questions of why I am here and why there are so many horrible things I have to go through. Now I think I know why. Thank you so much for saving me today. Thank you
Yes! Yes! Yes! Faith is a great grand adventure
I smile. 'OK! Ok. I hear You. I trust You. And I will follow You.'
I have listened 3 times now and will again. I can’t quite grasp the deepest idea of the Creator setting aside his glory & power to become a slave, a servant, a rescuer. No matter how many times I have heard this verse, there is a depth I can’t seem to hold on to….and maybe that’s the way it should be. Praise to the Lord of all. 🙏🙏🙏
Absolutely brilliant
Thank you for this amazing and inspiring homily.
The timing of this video could only be described as Holy Spirit led! I enter the Seminary in 2 weeks and I am being reminded as I listen to have that faith, trust, step into the unknown, leave my comforts. Thank you Bishop Barron. God bless you.
May God bless you on your journey to the priesthood. Be assured of my prayers🙏🏼🕊
I am praying for your journey to priesthood, God bless you.
Thank Bishop Barron! My prayers!
Thank you for this amazing sermon about trusting God!
God bless you, too, Bishop Barron! Wherever I am and whatever I am doing, I never want to miss any of your Sunday sermons and all your talks! Thank you very much!
I believe that in the Hebrew bible there is not Faith but the word Trust as you said so well. Thanks again for a homily well done.
Wonderfull, simply wonderful father
Bishop Barron,
I have been following you and Jordan Peterson for quite some time. I think in one of your discussions, Peterson said the church does not call it’s young people to adventure.
This homily is what young Catholics desperately need.
Call us forth from our hobbit holes. Challenge us. Hold us accountable. Talk about the stakes. Heaven. Hell.
And to go a step further…
Point out postmodernism for the evil that it is. Combat with societal ills. Don’t let up. Make the pitch to the laity like you’re recruiting for battle.
We live in an age of wolves and shattered shields. Christendom is no more. And in an age of relativism, orthodoxy is the last rebellion.
The enemy gains ground by the day. So rally the troops.
God bless you Bishop Barron. Amazing homily. Amazing take on the heroes journey and juxtaposing it to our faith.
❤ you Bishop Barron for taking many on a spiritual heroic journey. A true shepherd of Christ the King
FAITH = Further Adventures In Trusting Him. 🙏💕
Thank you for sharing this with us Bishop Barron.
Thank you so much Bishop Barron, especially as you start your newest adventure! God bless you always!
Hello Judy
Thank you Bishop Barron
Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ!
Thank you Jesus for your blessings to be faithful!
Thank you Bishop Barron!
May God bless you always in His embracing love!
One of Bishop Barron's best! We see the coming of Christ as the ultimate Hero's Journey.
Bishop Barron , Thank You !
Dear Lord, help my unbelief.
Amen! Trust in the Lord! Rather than attempting to blaze our own trail in the life (which is so limited by our very narrow view), follow our Lord and where He takes each one of us. That’s when life becomes new and full, indeed a participation in the divine life of Christ!
There is nothing cooler than having a father or a grandfather who is a hero.
BTW, awesome quote from Philippians 2.
Wow, Bishop Barron, I never perceived it as you explained it. Many thanks! You are a great gift to us as Catholics and a giant messenger of Our Lord. God bless you as you continue to walk in His light.
This struck home. I have been wondering about the term belief in God because I do not believe, I know God exists. In pondering this, I realized my faith was in trusting and believing that God is good and loving. And then Bishop Barron brings me this sermon to substantiate my recent thoughts on this.
In a very small way, I took a journey that at first was a bit daunting. I volunteered to be a eucharistic minister at a hospital. My initial thoughts were: first was I worthy to even do this and secondly how do I approach patients and what do I say? I prayed to God and the Holy Spirit for guidance and many times the appropriate words came to me and I know they were not mine. So your hero's journey may happen not in some distance land, but in your own backyard.
It's more than likely none of the biblical heroes would have considered themselves heroes, but just trusting in god without knowing gods purpose .
Thank you Bishop Barron as always for being the shepherd among lost sheeps. Thank you Word on Fire for all that you do. God bless you.
Listening to Bishop Barron has helped to build my faith AND vocabulary! 🙏🏾😁👍🏾
Hello Bishop Barron! I really love how you’re sharing with us these deep Latin terms and explaining them in depth. I’m a music historian and my Medieval classes were my favorite because of the lovely deep terms I can into contact with. That’s where I learned about beauty, truth and goodness and found clear direction in my life. Now being a special needs mom, I feel God’s leading my family and me on this great adventure. What a beautiful way you have of explaining this! Thank you now and forever! May God bless you and everyone at Word On Fire! 🔥❤️
Thank you dear Bishop. You, yourself have entered onto the next stage of a Hero’s Journey. We already miss you in California BUT send you greetings for a gracious landing in Minnesota. We watch and wait for your story to unfold. Peace for our world. Jackie The English Lady
This video really came at the right time. I am about to move away from a family that loves me very much to study theology and maybe even become a priest. Im scared but i also feel like this could be a God-given adventure. Thank you Jesus and Thank you Bishop
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for hearing and saying yes to his call! 🙏❤️🙏
Not sure if this is a sign of a "hero's journey" beginning in my life, but as of late I haven't found any peace in continuing with my engineering degree, and I haven't found any peace in discerning priesthood, but all of a sudden the thought came into my head the other day, "Why not go to medical school?" Completely out of the blue. Please say some prayers. This will take expedient discerning as I'm in my last year of my engineering undergrad
Finish your degree goof ball.
Many tks Bishop Barron.....you are answering Gods call ...you yourself are on a hero's journey......i order to help us understand the greatness of Almighty God......God bless your journey!!😆🙏🙏🙏👍👌..
Some wanderers start out without any comfort zone, though everybody else seems to be ensconced in theirs.
What a moving Sunday Sermon! "Our faith, our trust in God, is an imitation of His (Christ's) willingness to go on the hero's journey. Because he did it, we can do it." I never thought of trusting in God's providence in my own life as an imitation of Christ's love for us. That makes me think of the dismissal at Mass as our calling to a kind of spiritual "hero's journey". Christ "became sin" to bring us life through His salvation, and we are called to the Divine life - to trust in Him - and sent forth on a mission to give of ourselves "semper maior" through self-emptying love, as He did. Thank you Bishop Barron for a beautiful sermon and connecting all of the dots (as always)!
Been thinking about becoming Catholic for 5 years now, read a bunch of books and been kind of one foot in - one foot out. Going to finally start RCIA soon and take the plunge. Bishop Barron has been a huge help over the years. Even when I've found myself sucked down weird rabbit holes I've come back to Bishop Barron and others as paragons of sanity.
Your name made me chuckle, caught me off guard haha
Welcome home and best of luck 😀
Bless you bishop barron thank you talk very nice amean
This Priest. This Father. This Bishop. You have awakened my Faith, Bishop Barron. Thank you for that. Thank you for your work. Thank you for YOUR Faith. Thank you for sharing your gifts through your ministry.
God Bless you, my friend.
Happy Sunday Bishop Barron 🙏🏽🙂😇
Bishop Sheen's 1950s adventure is now Bishop Barron's 2022 adventure. Always terra incognito.
God bless you Bishop Barron.
Thank You
This morning Fr.Brian Reedysj departs from Norfolk Virginia to Djibouti for service with the Navy. He will be there for roughly a year as a Chaplain to the Navy/Marines stationed in Djibouti. He left Loyola Marymount University for the year to help in Africa. He should resume his professorship at LMU in the fall of 2023. God and our son Brian are going on a journey together. This sermon goes along on the journey with him.
Please add Fr.Brian Reedysj as he departs for a year to Djibouti with the Navy as a chaplain. You did this sermon for him even without knowledge of his undertaking. Leaving his professorship at LMU to go to a firing land.
WHAT AN INSIGHT! THE SPIRIT IS WORKING IN YOU BISHOP BARRON.
FR. ALEX REBELLO
Agree!! This is one of your best Bishop!! Thank you for sharing!!
You are one of the best...we love you🙃😊
YES!!!!
Bishop Barron, you are inspirational….your homilies rekindle my faith in God. Thank you.
GOD is Love, Amen💗
Thank you your Excellency! And may I say it’s beautiful to see your pectoral cross front and center. If only we could see more of your Cassic, that so many heroes bled and died for.
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" lao tzu. Believing and trusting in the Lord and moving away from our comfort zone for that great adventure. Only if we have faith as small as the mustard seed; we could move mountains.
Thank you so much for explaining what faith really means. As I grow older I have learned to have more faith and going where God wants me to go.
Amen!
Dear Bishop, though far away in India, I look forward to these sermons which I can only say are life-saving! Thank you and may God bless your ministry
Superb sermon. Very touching and life giving. Praise the Lord!!!
What humbug! A hero steers his own course. One who follows the path according to God's plan, can't be called a hero. He's just a puppet in God's hands.0
@@JD-ro7xe You are absolutely right. We are all mere puppets in God's hands. The Bible says that : But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.(Isaiah 64:8).
Never stop doing these. They are always so full of interesting insight and the good kind of religious zealotry. Much love to you.
Mi historia comienza con ser Jesús y ver a Michael Jordan como Cristo.
La verdad nos hará libres.
Powerful and moving. Thank you Bishop Barron.
This guy is so articulate and speaks so well and clearly and sincerely.
I’m a Protestant and probably always will be but moonlight with Bishop Barron
What about you Catholics nominating this fellow for next Pope?
I so enjoy your reflections every week on the Gospel. Thank you for sharing 🙏🙏
Such a beautiful and powerful sermon! Thank you Jesus!
I so agree, one of his very best
..."trust, even when I can't see for sure where He is leading me"...
Very powerful, and encouraging Sermon, thank you, dear Bishop
May God bless and protect you always.
*Bishop Barron:* Faith is an invitation to a hero's journey (6: 01) ... The real story of the Bible is God himself going on a kind of hero's journey (10: 38)
God bless Bishop Barron and Word on Fire ministries 🙏🏻❤️✝️
Excellent, Bishop! The Bible gives example after example of how God is always trustworthy and that he keeps his promises even if it is in ways that we ourselves might not imagine. It calls us to have that same trust of Abraham, even when we don't see the path. We trust that God will lead us faithfully if we do. Thanks for this supremely important reminder! Pax and blessings.
It will be the countless hero journeys in todays culture that brings Christ back into and saves the culture
That’s marvelous, God going on the Adventure Himself, for us!
I want to return home, to walk the heroes journey, but do not know if I have "enough" faith.
It begins with a single step...you do!
Amen
Revelation 3:16 comes to mind with this sermon. Heroes are formed in the coldest and/or hottest deserts where only God can sustain them with holy mana. If only we could see the value of an uncomfortable circumstance where only God can refresh us with cold water or heal us with hot water.
Wow that’s a great point. Appreciate it. On the occasions I have felt closest to god happend when I was in the most difficult situations or ill. When I came out those experiences of his love have stayed with me.
May God bless you as you go on your hero's journey to the Diocese of Winona-Rochester!
Preach Bishop Barron!
Heroes journeys are hazardous to life and limb. You can have them.
But give life.
I always enjoy Bishop Barron's videos, but this may well be one of my favorite.
Beautiful! Thank you so much! You cannot imagine how helpful and encouraging are your Sunday sermons here for our deeply confused old Germany. I am so grateful for the possibility to listen to them. Thanks again
Ich auch : )
Bishop Barron, I always look forward to these homilies, by God's grace you bring so much clarity. Thank you for your love of Christ and his church.
The same death (death to self) that we must ask our Lord to help us achieve, and follow our Lord’s example.
The words of the old hymn,Trust and Obey, is very close ,to what the Bishop is saying.
The journey is our life.God’s invitation
He says. Come on. Let’s go,I will be with you .the trip of a lifetime.
Hello Pat
Bless you Bishop Barron!🙏. What a beautiful way to describe Christian Faith. "TRUST". It is more intimate, as in a relationship. Which we are in as believers.
What a beautiful, inspiring homily. Thank you, Bishop Barron. God bless you and your work. Amen
Thank you for sharing God's Word.👍🙏🙏
Help me Lord a child's faith in You!
"Faith is the realization of what is hoped for
and evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1
Thank you Bishop Baron for encouraging and explaining... God Bless you ...from the Great South Land of The Holy Spirit. ( yes, Australia )
Thank you.
Again I am amazed because I read that book of Campbell too long time ago but never connected the dots with the Bible and less with God. You always amaze me Most Reverend Bishop Baron
THAT WAS GOOD…. !!! 🎉🎈🙏🌈 💗
