Refuse Scapegoating Violence - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 апр 2022
- Friends, this Sunday, we hear the story of the woman caught in adultery from the eighth chapter of John. René Girard thought that this story was particularly clear in showing the dynamics of what he called the scapegoating mechanism. And in the response of Jesus to the violence of the mob, we see the glory of God, who does not sanction this scapegoating frenzy, but rather meets the misery of our sin with his mercy.

Thank you bishop barron, I was a victim of a physical and sexual abuse by a catholic run Institution as a very young woman by a doctor and covered up by church... I learned after a lot of pain in my heart through a brilliant monk to forgive the church to forgive the person also but not the crime. I'm so grateful I did as he's passed on now and I pray for his soul, we are all sinners and through my forgiveness I was able to then see my own flaws and sins I love Jesus and my catholic faith now more than ever but I am now more protective of myself and my faith.... Prayers for your good health and for the health of our clergy ..🙏🙏🙏🙏
That kind of forgiveness is truly inspiring, and I'm so glad it allowed you to let go and to heal. I don't know if I would've had the strength were I in your shoes, but you must be an exceptional person💪
I wish you the best🤗
God bless you and your witness Linda. I am a survivor as well and know about this pain and healing. I, also, was very fortunate to have a wonderful priest who walked me through the early days of recovery and started me on that journey. Thanks be to God for merciful love and forgiveness.

I am thankful to Our sweet Lord that you are healed, though still hurting from a great injustice against you as a very young person by someone providing services on behalf of the church. That you can step out of that abuse and still seek Christ and indeed embrace him , is a great sign of your faith. Heaven awaits you when your time comes. God bless you Linda!!
Amazing
As a non-Catholic I love listening to Bishop Barron. Thank you for your words of hope and love. God Bless.

I just wrote a PhD dissertation based on Rene Girard. I'm so glad that you, Bishop Barron, are doing your best to promote his work. His work is invaluable in understanding our current predicament and his work calls us all to self-examination, repentance and conversion.
Any advice on a good book or one of Girards books. Or video. Thanks.
Never said more clearly and concisely.
@@jjcm3135 I have Theater of Envy, which looks at Shakespeare’s works using RG’s theory. Get it if you’re a fan of the Bard.
@@jjcm3135 absolutely. Of you prefer to hear a fine five hour radio program dedicated to him I'd recommend CBC Radios "the Scapegoat: insights into the ideas of Rene Girard." These are freely available on the internet. Otherwise, for books, his crowning achievement is considered "Things Hidden since the Foundation of the World" although Im of the opinion that "Battling to the End" is his most important work. Hope this helps and enjoy! Prepare to become an avowed Girardian, and thanks be to God !
@@christophermueller7466 I'm grateful for that advice. Over 3 yrs ago I read a very short review of R Girard's book 'I Saw Satan...' (by David Lyle Jeffrey) and it stayed with me. It actually impelled me to make a major decision. I ll go through the above. Thank you again.
Our society has much to learn from this Gospel passage. God bless Bishop Barron.
St. Augustine said "all that's left is Misera et Misericordia" , Misery and Mercy.
That's what the temple meant to be. The Glory of God dwells there, a place where the Misery of our sin meets the Misericordia, the Mercy of God, and may each one of us be an instrument of that meeting.
Thank you, Bishop Barron.
The Church is the place where misery meets mercy; thank you!
This is what is going on in the media and politics and it has the capacity to draw us in and take over too much time in our lives thus deflecting our own sins and eventually drawing us away from God.

This is wisdom. Thank you Bishop Barron. ✝️⚓️❤️
Thank you Bishop Barron for the beautiful homily in explaining how some people used the law to judge others and comdem them instead of helping them and showing mercy and love ❤️
Oh my word! You, Bishop Barron, opens my mind to see with my heart how I have acted towards others wrongly in the name of offering corrections. May the Spirit of God keep moving you to help us understand God! Thank you.
I love your homilies. Usually I end up crying. Good tears. Thank you.
Thank you Bishop. I'll try again. With a humble loving heart.
Such a beautiful, touching and eloquent homily. I am reminded that I too am so often like the Pharisees, ready to throw a stone at someone, forgetting that I am a sinner myself.....Misery met Mercy.....such a beautiful image it brings to mind. Forgive me, Lord, help me to put down my stone whenever I pick up one. Thank you Bishop Barron, may God continue to bless you and inspire you.
Me, putting my stone down and walking away!! I am a sinner eager to open my heart to Christ and sin no more. Such a Lenten blessing. May God bless you Bishop Barron!!
What a wonderful testimony. God bless you further toward Jesus with every breath you take‼️✝️🌈 Happy Easter.

If you subscribe to the podcast you can listen to the sermon now just FYI for anyone interested. As a matter of fact you can listen to homilies going all the way back to 2001. Back then Bishop Barron was actually giving his physical and email address out at the end of the homily. Amazing to see how far the ministry has come. Cheers to all & God Bless!

I always love Bishop Barron's preaching since he is able to me back to the time of Jesus. I recently discovered that the woman in the story was St. Mary Magdelene, as confirmed by early Church founding fathers. I recently saw her with the Blessed Mother accompanying Jesus to Calvary, as shown in the movie "The Passion of Christ." The majority of Jesus' Apostles fled the scene due to fear of the Jews, but Mary Magdelene stood by at the foot of the Cross. I believe Jesus transformed her heart, and she was on fire for Him and no longer had any fear of death. I experienced the same manner with my deep conversion, having led a promiscuous life. I now have an immense love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. I now have a fear of committing sins than death.
Not sure this woman was Mary Magdalen, as what is written about Jesus’ interaction with Magdalen is that he “freed her from demons”.The woman in this story is unnamed, and Jesus tells her to “go and sin no more”.... but that adds all the more encouragement... she could be anyone of us,...ALL of us. Jesus offers mercy without price to each and to all who would accept it. Perhaps the only thing Jesus would ask is that we in turn pass it on . Be at peace and be joyful... forgiveness, mercy, and perfect love are yours through Jesus.
After reading the first 5 chapters of Proverbs, listening to this is a fulfillment of the wisdom I read of and seek.
Thank you. You are with him indeed.
I cannot begin to express how valuable these Sunday sermons are for me personally. I have learnt so much about my catholic faith just through this weekly series and they are generally fun to watch.
Thank you Bishop and God bless
Thank you, Bishop, for sharing this profound exegesis of this passage. God bless you.

May God's kindness and mercy forever follow you☆
Jesus, who was the only one without sin (so he could've technically thrown the first stone), didn't condemn her either. Beautiful.
Bishop Barron, I hope you are the next Pope. God bless you.
A troublingly spiritual paradox so pointedly rendered by Jesus and so aptly unpacked by bishop Barron: Truth without love is too hard, love without truth is an illusion. Bishop Barron, you have been gifted the gift of marrying the sword and the heart. To those God has gifted much, much more will be asked of them.
Deo gratias, Levis Shalom
I generally write my sunday homilies before watching Bishop Baron. His insights make me want to go back to work each time. Breathtakingly deep !

Beautiful homily Bishop.May God bless you. Someone listening you from Ghana
Hello Ghana! From a Jamaican living in New York, USA.
Every time I hear this Gospel…And I might add many times as I am 82 years old, I agree with you Bishop that other men were most likely laying in wait and watching from afar ( not too far) in order to catch this woman in adultery. I think about the man who hired her for the hour …is he not equally guilty? What does the law say about him? What does Jesus say about him or what does Jesus say to him ?
I too have same doubt. Why only the woman was caught and not the guy?
Thank you very much Bishop Barron.Your teachings are helping me immensely,May God bless you abundantly.
Bishop, your eloquence is appreciated. I have so many everyday thoughts and questions constantly rushing through my mind. And then I listen to you and clarity…..amazing. I am blessed every time. God’s grace and blessings prayed upon you.
God bless you Bishop 🙏
Thank you Bishop Barron. We used to be in contact over 12 years ago. You used to write to me giving me some insides in certain Gospels. I thank God so much for having you help us all. Your integrity and value of God's work is so important in these days of uncertainty. I will always pray for you.
God bless you Bishop Barron. I'll remember that powerful phase Misera et Misericordia.
I feel so much hearing this preaching!
I did, and I praise the Lord for it
I've been following Dinesh D'Souza discussion of Dante's inferno. He makes the point that each of the damned blames their predicament on someone else and gain satisfaction at the thought that such a person is suffering a greater he'll than they are themselves. What an insight on our tendency toward scapegoating! How much better, as George Herbert puts it, "Though I sin, I weep! Still I creep to the throne of grace!"
Thank you for an especially thought provoking sermon.
It almost feels like God's providence how the Gospel this Sunday comes after Academy Award Incident. I believe 'misery meets mercy' is the key of how we should approach that event.
Amen God bless Bishop Baron.
Thanks Bishop. Your sermons always transform my mind and touches my heart. Greetings from Mexico. God bless you
Beautiful homily, misery and mercy meets in the Temple of God. Thank you and God bless Bishop Barron 🙏🏽
Wonderful words, touché was what first came to my mind! All of us sinners, must remember that wonderful words are only just that unless we put them into action. Or, perhaps, take action with words first? Thank you so much for this sermon Bishop. I have learned so much from it. God bless, praise be to Christ.
Please remember to pray for me, for my mental health and for my fatigue that I willing offer to Christ for others. 🇨🇦✝️✝️✝️

Thank you for providing this ministry. I am sick and cannot go to church this Sunday. It is wonderful to hear your homily. I also read your daily email. Thank you for being a blessing to people!
IN NOMINE PATRIS ET FILII ET SPIRITUS SANCTI. AMEN. LORD JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU. thank you, Bishop Barron.
I LOVE the detail "beginning with the elders."
man i wish i could get myself to become a believer , the bible has so many powerful moral moments , heck there wouldnt even be a need for the Garden of Eden if mankind followed Jesus's teachings
Pray for faith, we can't become believers without it. Will pray for you as well
We will pray for you. Do not stop trying. Pray or talk to the Lord daily. He is waiting for you ❤️ ✝️
Read the Bible, talk to Jesus, go to mass what have you got to loose but fear itself , fear everything and run or face everything and recover that's the joy in the Bible and the church of Jesus Christ.... I will pray for you that he leads you and please pray for me also...🙏
It is God who will lead you to belief, but your active participation is needed. Begin your day with grateful prayer and seek Him throughout the day-you will find Him! May the Holy Spirit cover you with wisdom and grace.
Perhaps the fact that you are "wishing" you could become a believer is actually the still small voice of God calling to you, "I love you. Come home." Bishop Barron often quotes St. Thomas Aquinas who famously said, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, Lord." So true. Also, none of us comes to belief by "getting ourselves" there - it is not something we ourselves do, but the work of the Holy Spirit in us. OUR part of it is to be open to the Spirit's leading, to suspend our disbelief, to suspend our human will and hubris in trying to figure it all out before we believe. If it could all be figured out, it wouldn't be faith! 🙂 "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." ~ Hebrews 11:1 Pray daily that you might be open to God's leading, and then be amazed by what He will do in your life! I'm praying for you right now. 🙏 God bless you!

Thank you Bishop Barron and thanks to the late Rene Girard for his wisdom on the anthropology of man.
@Pinned: By Bìshöp Robêrt Barrön I don't like that you take the name of the good Bishop.
Scapegoating is the mechanism where the mob looks for culpability in another for its own corruption. Ironic, another "mob" in John's Gospel called for Christ's head as well. Maybe that is why the story finds its way into the Fourth Gospel - the parallel of the mob justice for the woman and the mob justice Jesus experienced.
Amen. Thank you, and Blessings + + +
Rene Gerard rocks! Thanks Bishop Barron.
Amazing as always, thank you father all the way from Sweden
amazing homily. Thank you Bishop Baron.
🎯. Thanks, great video.
✌️
What a Sermon. It could be about forgiveness, the sin, the phariseus, but bishop could talk about the substitution of the building temple by the god temple.
The Spear by Louis de Wohl treats this scene well. It was a trap by the Pharisees, but Christ used it to teach a great lesson - Judge Yourself First.
After 60 years of life, I can assure you that these are the "saints stoners of the adulterous woman", because I have known many who, knowing that they are sinners, still struggle to see which of them throws not only the first but the heaviest stone. These at least were aware and left. What have we come to...
A beautiful homily.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, Bishop
Another great homily. Many Thanks Bishop Barron! I've experienced the violence of the mob summer before last and violence never accomplishes good. God's way seems to strange to us...but that strangeness verifies itself as divine.
Another wonderful and insightful homily, bishop. Thank you. Though as a woman I do notice that although it takes 2 to commit adultery, the man is not brought to the temple and condemned by the scribes and Pharisees...perhaps another aspect of scapegoating, where we put ourselves in the position of judging who is guilty and who is innocent instead of leaving that up to God.
Our priest talked about this in his homily. "Where is the man?" It's a good take on the story.
Someone said that actually Jesus drew on the ground the pictures of a ring and a shepherd stick. The things that Juda (patriarch of Juda clan) gave to Tamar as pledge....
The Jews understood it's meaning and left.
And Jesus is right. Not the woman caught in adultery but you men are at fault. And Jesus surely brought mercy amidst this misery.
Praying for Archbishop Barron ♥️✝️

Thank you Bishop Barron. Scapegoating - reflecting on this gospel and your message, it's easy to see how quickly and easily social media and technology has enabled Scapegoating on a global proportion by placing it into the palms of hands of billions of people. Giving up social media again this lent, it is such a breath of fresh air to be away from all the hostilities, anger, and pain that exists in many a social media thread.
