Stand Strong in the Spirit - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, this week, our second reading is from Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy. From prison, Paul writes to Timothy-the master to the disciple, the mentor to the mentee, the old soldier to the young soldier-and tells him to have courage, but to attach his courage to the weapons of wisdom and love. When one stands courageously, with wisdom, with love, with all the gifts of the Holy Spirit, then one is able to face down the powers of the world. When we try to fight them on their own terms, we try to conquer evil with evil, we make no progress toward the kingdom of God.

Such a powerful sermon. Thank you so much Bishop Barron. I'm closer to understand God and how to be a good Christian because of you. I was born a Buddhist and had been a Buddhist most of my life, but this didn't help me or provide me peace or strength. I recently found out that God was calling for me and has been providing me strength to fight against evils. He has been granting me peace and calmness so I can stand with human dignity in the middle of human drama and evil storm.
I've started to read the Bible in order to comprehend his teaching. I've reached out to many priests to help me understand it better. But you, Bishop Barron, you are the one who can truly guide me to Him and make me understand His teaching better and better. Your sermon always makes me cry, not with pain, but with joy as it has helped guide me towards peace and His kingdom.
Thank you so much. Thank you.

Thank you Bishop Barron, for this most apt sermon for today. October 1st is the National Day of the founding of the People's Republic of China, a regime that thrives on violence, hatred, cruelty and injustice. Just this week, Cardinal Joseph Zen, is standing trial in a kangaroo court in Hong Kong, for his courageous stance against this evil regime. Cardinal Zen is the Father Jerzy Popieluszko of Hong Kong, and the regime sees even this 90-year-old churchman as a threat. Yes, as Catholics and Christians we must stand to thwart this world predicated upon violence, hatred, cruelty and injustice. Thank you for these inspiring words.

We never hear of this in the USA anymore in main stream news.
I to am under attack, but in the USA. Anyone standing up against human trafficking and Roman style slavery, or criminal activity is attacked by slander, deceptions and lies and are being framed by false accusations. A Congressional representative was recently murdered and the people close to her said it was the human traffickers that killed her. I believe it. I have been dealing with this off and on for years. BA Soc.
The USA is not a safe place for good people anymore.

      Flee this anti-church.
God invites us into the throne room to ask for, help, grace, and mercy in times of need. There is no need for saints.
      Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV -
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Im not a catholic but most of my thinking is increasingly informed by catholic teaching and inspiration, and at long last a masculine sermon invigorating Christian courage and sacrifice.
No matter how reclariant, younger males are they're wired to look towards older men for role modeling. I appreciate hearing such courageous thoughtful clear speaking from male leadership within the catholic church present and past.
Churches that don't speak to and challenge their men into more of themselves are failing them.

While in the Navy, I had the opportunity to visit the communist nation of Yugoslavia. I was quickly introduced to how comfortable and blessed we have it in the west. Then I saw Tito fall and then the Soviet Union. I really didn't know why the Soviet Union fell but again, I could only think of the people I met in Yugoslavia years before. Mikhail Gorbachev is quoted as saying the Soviet Union fell because of the Chernobyl incident. I don't see how that could be. Like you, I think it was God and faith that toppled the Soviet Union and in turn the Berlin Wall and numerous eastern European countries. I wish we in the west would learn from that history and from those who used the power of the spirit for justice in the world. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening.

Jesus please hear my prayers, I have nowhere to turn but to you. I know sometimes, it may be hard to trust God’s plan but we must take comfort and have faith in him. I know we can’t place our faith in mortal things. So I’m keeping faith. I have lost so much in the pass two years since losing my job as a social worker at Forsyth Hospital. I lost my job because I declined the vaccine I declined due to my pre existing health condition lupus and heart disease. I was denied my medical/religious exemption. I’m waitressing and I’m so thankful to be working but I’m not making nearly enough to make ends meet. I have two beautiful boys both are autistic. My husband passed away years ago. I feel so alone. Each month is a struggle to not end up on the streets with my two boys. I’m constantly afraid of losing my home. But even as I face homelessness this month. I have faith, God will provide. He has this far. With GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE, please keep me and my two little boys in your prayers. I’m in NC the hurricane has hit our power has been out for 24 hours all of my groceries are spoiled. 😭🙏🏾 Thank you.

We learned compassion, to cling to each other, to share, to endure together in our need and not find comfort in material things. We understood only later how difficult it was for our mother, and her enduring faith and love in the struggle is still a model for us now. We always had a roof, many different rooves ☺️, as she had to move when she couldn't keep the one she had at the time. We had just enough to eat and who knows where it came from, except for her faith, but we wouldn't change it now for all the comfort in the world because it united us in a way that worldly comfort never had before that.
Take heart, your boys will be rich in a way they never would have though they may not understand until later either, you can know that God is always at work through it all. May He be praised in all things! Sending continued prayers for you and them. 🙏

Say 20 decades of the rosary each day for a better job or a substantial amount of money. Keep repeating prayers in your own words to God. Believe it is coming to you. Thank God for all you have already, if anything. I have had answered prayers in this way. Tell God you love him and that as his daughter you wish him to provide for you. This has been a loving way I havehad prayersfor money answered. God will come thru for you. Dismiss fearful imaginings and get back to saying to God - I know that you love me and I know you are with me. This is praying with faith. God bless you. I will pray for you. I hope you will pray for me.

There were so many people in ex-communist countries who endured a cruel and violent regime and gave their lives for their faith in God. And today there are in some parts of the world strong Christians who receive the same treatment. But what do we know? We who live in comfort and ease. It seems that a spiritual battle must be fought here as well against laziness and cowardice. And how can we do otherwise than with wisdom and love inspired by God? Thank you, Bishop Barron! Blessings from Romania!

I listen to your sermon Bishop Barron and reflect on my own 'soul force'... I know in my heart that I have received a beautiful gift from the Holy Spirit and that, to borrow your words "... then one is able to face down the powers of the world and move towards the kingdom."

This reminds me of our Artur Pawlowski here in Canada. He is a pastor from Poland and has been persecuted here and arrested by the police for continuing to preach and speak out during Covid lockdowns.
He has now created an Independence Party in Alberta.

Thank you Bishop Barron for this sermon that is beautifully said!!! Thank you also for sharing with us about Father Jersy who I know nothing about, but may discover as I am currently reading a biography of St John Paul II! I believe for me, this is not a coincidence Bishop that you picked this specific Scripture passage that I heard today you gave your homily on! I believe God is speaking to my heart through both the Scripture passage and your reflection; your memories and examples you gave of the 'spirit force' found in certain people who one would not have expected! This has been very encouraging for me to hear! May the Lord keep blessing you and inspiring you Bishop Barron!!!

What a wonderful example your story of the young priest is, Bishop. It's possible that his death might be considered a failure by some, however our faithfulness is what God wants, and he can use it for his greater good no matter what the world does to us. Thank you for another inspiring homily. Pax and blessings!

Paul claims that power is at its best in weakness. To live in this space of spiritual paradoxe is the most counterintuitive thing for me who struggles with « I will do your will, God, when I will be strong enough ». Holy Spirit, empty me from me and fill me up with you.
