Although Italian football is enjoying a renaissance thanks to good results, the championship still faces recurring problems with racism. Italy is in fact the worst affected country among the big European championships. So how does racism manifest itself in Italian football? And what is being done about it? Our correspondent Natalia Mendoza reports.

Statistics say there are more immigrants in Italy than in Spain cause Italy is full of white immigrants from Eastern Europe and Chinese immigrants. In Spain most immigrants are from Latin American and African countries and people from this countries are black and brown, there are very few Eastern Europeans immigrants and Chinese immigrants in Spain, especially if compared to Italy. So yes, the dude is right there are more blacks in Spain than in Italy.

Italy has proven time and time again that it’s a racist cesspit.
The comment section should have been disabled some of the comments more racist. I don't think all Italians are racist and I love italian culture.But people have to understand no man likes to immigrate from his homeland,leave everything in order to start from the bottom again in an unknown place to him where he is not welcome. I’m Italian. I’m white. And when I watch at these kind of things, read these type of comments, I feel very ashamed to be one. I can’t put into words how sorry I feel for what I’m seeing. All that hatred makes me feel sick. I am 23 and I wanna speak on behalf of my generation. I don’t mean to justify anyone, just saying that in my opinion elderly people tend to be racist (not all them, luckily...) because of their ignorance (some of them probably skipped school) and also because all they see on the Tv is politicians trying to convince the electors that “Africans” are the reason why the economy of the country is going down. I’m really embarrassed. And pissed at the same time, at people who think that way. We need to make a change and we (as younger generation) are fighting over that! We are all human beings , no one deserves to be treated like garbage just because of their skin color. I wouldn’t raise my children in a racist country.

Perhaps, southern Italians (being historically tanner/darker) value “whiteness” as more high status, while northern Italians are “paler” and don’t place too much emphasis on it.

Speaking about racism in Italy, 1 comment isn't enough, there are indeed racist people in Italy, and football authorities aren't doing enough to stop racism in stadia, but still the majority of Italians are NOT racists, believe me.
