    Pandreo is absolutely cracked out of his mind. His Bases are Kagetsu level.
    Also choop doesen't know that Fortify can replenish your entire engage meter in one go apparently.
    Choop literally agreed after he beat the game that Yunaka is better than Zelkov by saying that a unit with Canter will always be better than a unit with better stats.

    The way I see the whole Anna Micaiah debacle, is that Micaiah is a privilege you grant to 1 unit to power level them. But the thing is assuming you're doing this, it stops that unit from contributing in any other way besides staff utility.
    This is why Jean and Anna are good candidates for Micaiah power leveling, you lose nothing for putting her on them, meanwhile if you wanted to use it for Chloe, or Louis or whoever, you lose out on several valuable turns of combat in order to great sac and aoe Mend.
    I feel like the way I see investments in fe changed drastically around the point Mekkah started advocating always stat boosting Jill in RD. In the purposes of tierlists, we actually *can* assume statboosters/investment/etc if that unit has no competition for it, and who are you giving Micaiah thats coming out the other end more powerful than Anna/Jean and was contributing more when they were using Micaiah? All micaiah users are equal, you always full heal, heal at range, etc so whether the user is currently bad or not is irrelevant, but once that units done using her, they're all of a sudden full of exp that lets them snowball.

    • @xuanathan
      @xuanathan Год назад +35

      TL;DR
      Micaiah does not care if you are a good or bad unit, if you put micaiah on someone they will always do the same thing, they will heal, and level quickly. So using it on a unit who is *currently* weak isn't actually a big opportunity cost, it fact its really small.

    • @GaiusTulliusCatallusXXC
      @GaiusTulliusCatallusXXC Год назад +11

      This is not true. The point Chaz was making is that Micaiah can boost up any unit but anyone can get it so it would be better to give it to someone who you are using anyway, like Chloe or Celine. The best user IMO early on if he’s not running Sigurd is Louis because he’s armored which means that he will automatically get the EXP as if he healed everyone due to the armor effect of Great Sacrifice.

    • @xuanathan
      @xuanathan Год назад +15

      @@GaiusTulliusCatallusXXC
      But the question is why would you even do that? Chloe is not going to fall off, Louis IS going to fall off, and while I concede Celine, she is a valid recipient, there is nothing that makes Chloe or Louis a better recipient of Micaiah when they either don't struggle to get 1k sp or get exp (Chloe), or do fuck all with it because enemy power creep leaves them in the wayside no matter how much investment you pump into them (Louis).
      Someone like Celine, or Anna/Jean are units who make more use of it because they don't effortlessly get the resources they need through raw combat, and they do have genuine payoff in the mid to late game.

Less grinding with Anna means your able to funnel more xp to your other units like Chloe/Alear. I actually think swords are very good in this game and axes are heavy and have hit rates that always make me second guessing myself (especially in the early game). I think Diamant is extremely underrated consider that he has good bases and he was doing pretty much the same thing in my fixed Maddening as in Mekkah's let's play (maybe ike just breaks him). I'm also not sure how I feel about seeing Ivy, Celine, and Pandreo placed below Louis and Amber (consider all 3 of them have tome and staff utility while the other 2 have more viable replacements) and I'm also curious what skills you gave to Ivy since tome precision pretty much fixed her hit rate problem for me and I'm not sure what other skills she really want other than Canter and Tome Precision. I'm also not too sure what makes Merrin and Kagetsu placed lower than Yunaka and Zelkov consider they can perform just about the same level and if not better. Hortensia is an interesting unit since she can easily be placed in the high S tier for staff utility and her combat is respectable but not amazing. She has good speed growth to not get doubled and a lot of the times she can finish off enemies if needed to, my only issue is her low hp and Maddening enemies can one shot her but she usually has good avoid and a hp tonic will patch up the one shot problem. Her stats reminds me a lot of Sara in FE5 but Sara is way more useful in her game because FE5 just works differently.

    With regard to Ana and the resources she requires, I would argue that "early reclassing" is a benefit to the Micaiah ring on top of the XP gain. If you were rating the bond rings, would you not count early reclassing as a benefit to Micaiah? So my opinion is that by not using Micaiah's XP (which, to be fair, is good for any character) for the benefit of a unit like Ana that is just in the wrong starting class, you're under-utilizing the Micaiah ring. I think one of the big reasons why Framme's usefulness stretches so far into the game is because of her massive contribution to Alear Dodgetanking. If you manage to get some of the avoid skills from Marth on Alear, pairing him with Framme dramatically lowers the enemy capability to hit him since his avoid numbers reach obscene levels. Then of you just stick a Micaiah engrave on a shielding art, Framme is also dodge tanking. Contributing to main character survival is the main source of her usefulness.
    The fact that she's just frankly a good martial master just allows her to extend that usefulness further into the game. Though her usage is most certainly dependent on Alear and she'll be significantly worse if she moves too far from Alear which can curb her flexibility.

    Man, this forced me to reflect on myself as a player. I always enjoy investing and pushing units to break the game. Hearing Choops's thought on Jean and Anna brought attention to that, but also the low value placed on the Timerra sandstorm build. I was planning to go for it since I don't know who else would take a Defense stat booster.
    The other points I can think of that were missed. Clanne was discussed as a magic unit, but he, to my knowledge wants a second seal for physical. Not worth it, but but better than keeping magic if you use him.
    RE Zelkov vs Yunaka personal skill: I think they both can get enough avoid (especially on Dawn engrave) that having the crit is a bit better than +10 avoid. Was the reasoning for Zelkov being better the ability to use it on normal terrain?
    Another thing about Ivy. She has considerably more bulk than other mages and on par with some physical units. Not a tank, but can afford one round of combat. I didn't really know what to do with any of the surge tomes, or the Elsurge tome you get a few chapters, before she joins, and I think Ivy is the only unit it makes sense to use it for and it lets you patch the hit-rate issues that come from not being Mystical. (seriously though? Ivy below Etie?)
    Also, you talked about mystical being good a lot. My only understanding of unit types so far is Armor=unbreakable; Mystic=ignore terrain bonus; Covert=double-avoid terrain bonus; Cav and Flying are what they are; Dragon gives Alear special skills on Emblem rings. I'd love a video on the different emblem ring effects by unit type for each ring and which is the best wielder for each ring?

      @ancientspark375 Год назад

      You can take defense boosters on any bruiser, mid-defense unit, of which there are several. Timerra is controversial because she really can't kill much on her own, but she has enough defense to serve as a decent off-tank and enough speed that you don't have to baby her much against fear of doubling. So to get value out of her, you need to get value out of her chip damage which usually means an aggressive, player-phase comp (lots of fliers, etc.), which most people don't try on their first Maddening run (vs, say, throwing a Panette at the problem). She's a support-ish off-tank unit, similar to Goldmary (who also has worthless offense, but useful, safe chip damage with Dual Assist on an above average Defense unit).
      The thing about Zelkov vs Yunaka is that you can save the Dawn engrave for other units if you use Zelkov. Daggers are pretty light; you can easily wield Silver Daggers without much speed penalty as the game goes on, and it's not like Thieves have a lot of stuff to spend SP on so it's not a huge deal to get +Spd or +Avo skill if you need it. So you would like to get less Avo Engraves on them and save them for non-Covert heavy speed units. Micaiah engrave is helpful not only for Avo but also the weight lightening and can thus salvage a lot of low Build, high Spd characters (of which there are quite a few).

    I think you missed explaining one important criteria that can make or break units which is what is the efficiency expectation for this tier list assuming this is for a maddening run. For, example are you allowed to spend extra turns spamming staffs to eek out enough SP in the early game?
    I can make a pretty busted Alfred following the exaxt same model as Link suggested for Jean and I feel like it would be easier to do and save turns since we get Alfred earlier. The end result won't be as good, but it would still be busted for Maddening. The Jean/Anna argument sounds so much like the Nino argument.
    If you are looking for additional content ideas, what about ranking the units as if you would use them the entire game without an Emblem Ring on Maddening without DLC/Olwen ring as they would always be the odd unit given the limited number of Enblem Rings available. They can be in their best class and have a B Bond Ring whenever they become available and inherit skills when reasonably available. The argument here would be that the best units don't need the most powerful tools that can be shared with the lesser units to make your army better as a whole. I'm also curious whether people will do a no Emblem/Bond Ring run to see which are the best units with the remaining tools available.
    If you made it this far, I think you are both sleeping on Pandreo, and lesser extent Framme, as a High Priest as I always find their combat with a tome useful even without an Emblem Ring when they don't need to use a staff.
    I'm personally really enjoying Alear as a Wolf Knight given how insane daggers can be forged/engraved with their speed growth. The enemies rarely go for them given the low hit rate, so you can abuse Lucina's Bonded Shield if you are in a jam and get the extra attack being so close. It also has the added benefit of putting female Alear's hair in a ponytail which I think Link would appreciate.
    Finally, Hortensia is the easiest S tier even if you don't give her an Emblem Ring. She's got plenty of punch with an elfire for any needed extra damage for when Choops comes up a few hit points short allowing Alear to go somewhere else the few times that you don't need to use her staff utility from two range. Giving her the Micaiah ring, she's absolutely broken with the things she can do that everyone else wouldn't be as good doing if they had the same tools.

    (This is first out of chronological order since it's what made me want to comment.) The problem with the Jean assessment is it was based on a singular build path. They never even considered if or not he contributes meaningfully if you don't invest a Second Seal into him. And to that, I say he grows well just staying in Martial Monk and only using him as tactically needed (special note going to how quickly both Def and Res grows on him in this case, it'll sneak up on you how soon he can start taking hits when you don't need him for Chain Guard/had an HP level-up you don't feel like healing off to use Chain Guard). Completely low effort for mid-to-high payoff. And then only on top of that he has a bunch of re-classing potential if you choose to invest in that instead. Most of all, less annoying than Framme, making up the difference from her earlier availability. Although, Second Seals are a resource themselves, if you just don't use them you're not really gaining anything from abstaining, and there's not that many units that truly want to use them in the early game.
    Next point, Boucheron could have 0 Str growth and still be an ideal Axe unit. He doesn't fall off, he just has a couple chapters of struggling for his lower base Dex and Speed to catch up from high growths (during which he can still face tank thanks to the HP and Build), and then snowballs from there. If you can hit and double with really heavy Axes, the weapon might is all that matters for damage. His only ACTUAL weak points are low Luck, the opportunity cost of benching him being low, and re-classing him to try to "fix" his issues being a total trap option (he's forced to stick to the Axe Fighter line of Promotion by his bases and growths, so he's like the least re-classable unit in the game). Benching him is totally viable, but so is giving him one of the first Master Seals, won't be going wrong in either case. Both Berserker or Warrior can work, but it's pretty clear which class is the better one. Although, he's technically the best Berserker by virtue of all other characters having too many other options for class choice and Warrior being better on Bow Innate characters (mostly just if you like for every character you're using to be in a different class from each other).
    Anna is best in High Priest (for Luck and because her Mag is huge enough to not need nor want higher rank tomes), so, to be optimal, she's either DLC required to use early or a later game unit. On that note, you can just put off doing the paralogues of her or Jean until you're ready to use them, or until after you've gotten a story map unit you do want to use to put those maps' exp and resources towards, so that might mitigate the issue slightly. Even if you don't class change her to a magic class, hard to call her F tier, since you can just pull the old magic weapon utility for her if you did make the mistake of raising her as a physical unit, and Backup utility is automatic D minimum (honestly, only Cavalry type units are in danger of being truly dead weight, since the unit type effects can make any unit useful enough to escape F in my opinion, as long as their availability doesn't invalidate it). And there are no unequivocal "starts-as-a-mage and useful through the whole game" units without effort in the game. They all need babied in some way or another. But, she is still a high effort unit in any scenario, so lower ranking is ultimately WAY more warranted than it was with Jean. Although, I liken judging her on her starting class akin to judging a unit based on waiting until level 20 to promote units: excusable blind ignorance or willful knowing ignorance of the game systems. She's a merchant that wants you to invest in her, totally convinced it was another self-aware element from the developers.
    Lapis is very comparable to being a worse Framme in growths, and the bases are nothing to write home about when you have Diamant to make direct comparison against the very next chapter (who also gets to start with an Emblem for SP efficiency), and even he's not too good in his own right either. Actually, that's an element against basically every retainer that joins from chapters 7+, join chapters holding them back since they're forced deployed but you can't equip them due to being green until starting. On it's own slightly minor, but if the unit in question has any shortcomings that exasperates them heavily, since they're potential liabilities for that one chapter depending on playstyle.
    Bunet: Oh, hey, it's that Calvary class being the only thing that can make a unit dead weight I mentioned earlier. Not that reclassing saves him.
    ...Mainly, at the end of the day, growth units aren't a bad thing in this game, because there's so so so many tools for catching units up to speed that the opportunity cost is a false narrative. If you can go out of your way to put Canter on every unit, you're just being contrary saying units are bad due to early game Second Sealing, Sacrifice abuse, or such.

    Anna on maddening with fixed growths is pretty good, one shots all of the fliers and doubles the armoured units either killing them or doing 98% of their HP as a bow knight with radiant bow
    Anna on maddening with random growths becomes insane because her growths are so high % that you get way more stats on random than on fixed because rng on anna is heavily in your favour
    (Bow knight is better since you can S tier claude's ring for 2-3 range radiant bow and the option for 2-4 range long bow, plus sets speed and dex to 70% to ensure that you double everyone in the game and Radiant Bow's base damage is so high that it makes up for having less magic growth)

    Ivy actually scales quite well if you give her some Speed fixing with the Lyn ring. Speedtaker and Speed+, combined with her naturally high Build means she'll start doubling after a few kills and she can deal big damage with heavy tomes.
    Her bulk also lets her take a few hits, but you definitely want to watch out for Crits, because Ivy's Luck stat is terrible. But she's right up there with Pandreo when she gets the investment she needs.
    And even if you don't want to invest in her at all, you can just slap a Thunder tome on her and give her Draconic Hex, she'll do this job better than any other mage unit because she can fly.
    Definitely deserved a higher rank.

      I would say the fact that they give you rosado with the eirika emblem is a good chapter to get him early kills and level him up easily. Then althoug kagetsu would be better, i think rosado is easily a good option to use the eirika emblem just in the next chapter, since it gives you movility and power to make ise of it. Then kagetsu could do it better, but there are so many good rings you can use in him, lun specially, so rosado is a pretty good unit to put a good rong on and see his usefulness, in that way he can make the game easier, and he can scale pretty fast too, with high sp obtaining speedtaker is not a hige issue and that dolves practically his speed problem even on maddening.

    • @ancientspark375
      @ancientspark375 Год назад +6

      The problem is that he's a victim of the timing you get Second Seals. His growths in physical classes are good, but not so good that it justifies absorbing XP from other units throughout the early game (especially on Mage) when you have actual growth units to utilize, and he starts extremely low level (even though he joins immediately). XP is sparse in early maps without Micaiah setup very specifically, so you can really only carry a few units through the early game.

Clanne is down 6 mag (can't use levin sword to deal with armors) and is way squishier (down 12 entire hp in exchange for just 2 def / 1 res). Chloe also wins in bld, lck, dex, so she'll double more, dodge more, and be more accurate. There's no way Clanne is outperforming her as a wyvern without heavy favoritism.

    I’m with Choops on the Céline argument. She’s one of the only units with 3 weapon types (the other is high priest and the brawling is whatever unless you put a high strength/magic unit there) and she’s the only one with her unique 3. The whole not being silenced with levin sword thing, breaking axe units with magic, staves, and pretty good speed & defensive growths. All that while still being a mystical unit who can take advantage of the really good Emblem bonuses like thyrsus or magic damage with override. She’s the ONLY unit who can fully take advantage of magic override, and it leaves most of the units with low enough health that anything that hits it kills it, if they’re not already dead. She’s been my only mystical unit in my run currently bc Ivy and Hortensia are flying and my other healer is a Chloé griffin. Definitely keeping at least 2 mystics next time though for all the cool bonuses

Had like a 60%+ chance to crit on everyone, always had doubles available, with Wrath, he was up in the 90% for crit chance, all with 100% hit due to Elsurge, and I used Byleth on him for a bit of extra crit, sometimes getting hit for half damage, 1-3 range Elsurge made him an amazing enemy phase unit, especially in the late-game chapters where reinforcements just kept coming, and he just fit really well to be the person doing the Byleth dance. He made obviously zero use of Divine Pulse though.

    Chloe's strength is godawful unless you give her every single energy drop, so that's a waste of resource, everyone can be a griffon knight so she's not doing anything special shortly after her join.
    Yunaka can't kill shit unless you sink a ton of money and resources for forged weapons, waste of resources, just give it to someone who doesn't need to use forge weapons to be able to kill.

    I dont know where to start, i think this tierlist has some major flaws. Its based on your opinions but Choops doesnt seem very knowledgeable about certain units causing them to be devalued quite a lot. Im basing this on maddening with dlc btw. Putting Etie over Ivy is insult to injury for me LOL. The concerns about Ivy are true that she becomes inaccurate by the endpoint of the game. But before that she gets the job done. If you give her the speed and magic raising items and Lynn she can keep up with doubling and oneschotting enemies. While saying “give them all the boosts and she works” isnt a good argument, you guys did say she has a niche. She is a 1-2 flying magic user that has decent defensive stats. If you could make any unit capable of oneshotting, youd pick the unit that can do so in the most flexible way. 1-2 flying with canter option is the most flexible in my book and thus I say she has a claim on those stat boosts since she objectively uses those stat boosts well, better than others (i also raise this as an argument for putting miccy on Anna earlygame). So for me she goes S,as well as Kagetsu. He pairs well with Edelgard. He has great base Str and Str growth, paired with his great speed, speed taker and Edelgards str bonusses he can pull off brave sword builds and reliably oneshot basically anything. This also makes it possible for him to quickly charge the emblem. Thanks to raging storm he can instantly use up all the engage turns and with dancing support potentially engage every turn. This is a niche that other units would not be able to do because they simply dont have the stats to pull it off. You guys make swords seem mediocre but they have some clear strengths. Forged armorslayers get the job done like mages do on armor units and the bravesword is light enough that Kagetsu doesnt get weighed down by the endgame. he does this while sporting a 60% def growth while in wyvern and so he can be your main tank that also has a good dodge rate, the emblem even helps with tanking archers.
