Flurry of Blows can actually *not* be used with weapons (at least not by Open Hand monks) because you are only allowed to make 2 *unarmed* strikes !

The thing though is that Order didn't have monks but brothers since they weren't isolated. They ran an orphanage and "dead guy duty."
Brothers/Sisters = all metal dragons.
Monks/Nuns = gold dragon hermits
Friars (includes Ladies) = silver dragons
1:10 female Monks are sometimes called "Nuns", so if you play a female monk you can whip out some nun-fu.
And if someone tries hitting on you go stunning strike, add in a vicious mockery (either racial trait or magic initiate) and say “NUN-FU-YOU”

Reason: low AC and low health makes them squishy. (yes, you can catch projectiles and technically you can have an AC of 20 without magic items or any items, but that's only when you are very high level). Your dmg isn't that great either and most of it depends on you burning KI. Sometimes literally (fangs of the fire snake) And for like 10 levels or so the only increase in dmg and survivabiltiy comes from stat increase and the odd increase of your martial arts die. But you get evasion so that's nice.
However you get all kinds of bullshit. You move fast, can run on water and walls, immune to poison, disease and pretty mcuh all forms of control or AoE effects. You can run a lot dodge a lot and at lvl 18 you basically become dragon ball fast where are too fast to be seen by either your enemies or your friends.
>In conclusion a monk may not be super useful for a small party, but could be extremely useful for a larger party.

Interestingly enough, female monks do exist and have a historical basis. In the Christian tradition that's nuns which did their own thing, but in most Eastern traditions, women had almost the same access to monk-hood as men

For the chastity and poverty, that's often more of a western style Monk...which, class wise, is more of a Cleric than a Monk.
D&D Monks are the more eastern style, which can have some of those vows, but a lot of them don't...and many of the subclasses definitely aren't originating from that such as Kensai (Which is basically the wandering weapons master out to build his skills) which is Samurai Jack or Rurouni Kenshin. Most unarmed combatants seem to fit more of the wandering martial artist or searcher for enlightenment archetype than the direct monastic tradition. Sure, a lot of them were called monks which was basically because a lot of monasteries in those areas doubled as orphanages.

One of my favourite things about the Vibe Check is that it can be activated anywhere after you apply it at any later point.
- You hear of a tyrannical king that his subject worship like a god.
- sneak into the king's room.
- apply Vibe Check and get the hell out and make sure you’re unfollowed.
- the king is wondering wtf just happened but remembers that he has a speech to give.
- buy some binoculars (or get a totem barbarian friend who has eagle eyes and the observant feat to be able to see the king at a safe distance).
- at the climax of the speech activate the Vibe Check.
- king stops talking and ragdolls off the balcony dead.
- all his subject saw the king who they worshipped as a god die in front of them.
- grab some popcorn and watch the chaos ensue.

critiquing D&D or you since i'm sure this stuff is canon and it's a fantasy universe. For anyone interested in the reality for which monks are based on however there is essentially female monks. Called Bhikkhunī. Some historical female monks, sometimes erroneously referred to as nuns. Fought in combat as well, and trained in martial arts / self defense. Male and female monks however are and were segregated to avoid lust, as like the vow of poverty; lust and sexuality was often looked at negatively as it encourages distraction and greed, preventing you from proper discipline.
The distinction between Male and female monks is important here because in eastern philosophy for which D&D monks are primarily based. Male and Female monks are essentially equal, something that is very different from the nuns and monks of the Catholic church. Of course in historical reality this varied widely throughout time and by region.

With the flurry of blows open hand technique. You can actually apply one of effects to each hit. So land three hits you can trip, push, and say no more reactions. All in a single turn (provide they fail the saves and you land the hits)
I once made a monk that didn't belong to any monastery, her backstory was that she lived in the wilds alone for so many years that she learned how bodies, both her's and the animal's, work just to pass the time. She basicaly learned about ki by trial and error

Our monk essentially one shot a big boss because we wore down it's shield and he got a quivering palm off. So before the normal initiative went down we killed a boss and it lead to one of the greatest moments ever.

Ah yes Monk, up there as one of my favourites classes after the fighter, haven't tried any of the xanathos traditions yet, been musing of doing a Kensei and basically do a monk archer.

3.5E Bardic knowledge check: "quivering palm" is based on a supposed secret martial arts technique known as "dim mak" or "touch of death". The concept also showed up in a not-so-well-known 80s RPG called "Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes" (PCs couldn't learn it, but NPCs might know it), where I first learned it was a thing. Wikipedia also has a page about it.
