So I’ve been talking with the next campaign’s DM and I was trying to make something very close to Beorn from the Hobbit. Obviously not as powerful early on, but after a while the character would be very powerful. The thing is the only “skin changers” we know of are were-bears, so he proposed that. I myself like the idea of using those stats and that build but I don’t like the idea of looking like a were-bear since I myself think they look dumb and strange. Do you know of any other ways to skin change that would still have the true raw power of a bear? The campaign he is DMing he is going to have us start at lvl 3.
When I ran a gnome barbarian my justification was that she literally fell into a badger den and spent so long strangling badgers, she became one with them on a spiritual level. Also the rabies.
So basically she's either a "honey badger barbarian" or she's the "woverine".

I had a friend who once played a human barbarian who was a rather fine gentleman who cared about manners and etiquette and stuff like that. What people didn't know was he was actually the result of an experiment as a child and trained to be a savage brute until he was rescued by some people and put in the care of a noblewoman where he eventually trained to run her house hence his proper etiquette and decent intelligence. He would only rage when someone insulted someone he cared about or tried to attack them and when he took damage or someone got rough with him. It was such an interesting character to see played all prim and proper one second then ripping through his shirt to look like Alexander Armstrong the next and pummeling a guys head in so hard it was like that scene from GoT.

I have a couple of metal sets - I highly recommend them. They have such a fantastic weight to them, it's a completely different rolling experience.

Y’know, I have fond memories of playing dnd for the first time, and at level 4 sprinting across the battlefield, hitting for way too much damage, and then disengaging and hiding behind our 20 ac paladin, who was also level 4. Good times.
I remember my first character was a paladin. My entire objective during the game was just to increase my AC to ridiculous levels. Using a combination of shield of faith, an actual shield, took the feat that gives +1 AC while wearing armour (much better feats out there in hindsight, especially for higher levels but at the time I was committed) and topped it off with plate armour. At Level 5 I had a max AC of 23.
My main tactic in pretty much any battle would literally consist of me running headfirst into the first group of enemies after casting shield of faith and aggroing them with our Barb following suit. Our ranged guys would then go ham without ever having to worry about taking a single speck of damage. Unfortunately I learned very quickly that AC doesn't mean shit at higher levels when you've got an abundance of Spellcasters and magic related attacks that ignore AC. Still pretty damn fun to watch the DM planning my terrible demise at early levels whilst I basically stood there begging every enemy to hit me.
One of my favorite characters was a Halfling Barbarian with a badger (bear) totem. Because badgers are basically bears but, you know, smol and live in holes in the ground.

Thank you. So often, people take "Barbarian" to mean you can only come from a tribal culture. In truth, "Barbarian" in this context just means you're good at violence and anger. You could be a Soldier belonging to the most advanced empire in the setting, an Acolyte who went to a monastery to try to master your rage, a Noble on the run for your bad temper, a Guild Artisan of sedentary disposition who occasionally gets possessed by the ghosts of your warlike ancestors, or a jacked Sage whose penchant for violence is tempered by an analytical mind.
Even your Rage is flexible in how its flavored. You might enter a battle trance, or allow an animal or ancestral spirit ride you.
You could play a serial killer who's "rage" is an intense state of focus.

In xanathar's guide their is a invocation for pact of the the chain where when your familiar is within 100 feet of you all dice used to heal you are maxed and one familiar you can get is an imp which can turn invisible and for healing just take pact of the celestial (which can get revivify)

Flight speed:

> the eagle totem let’s you dash as a bonus action while raging

Yep. My player just rolled up a Shifter Tiger Barb with Eberron having come out, and its fucking terrifying trying to deal with him fuckin pouncing on enemies. Literally any other option of the totem would be workable, but because Unarmed Defense encourages one to pump the shit out of dex, he's horrifically sneaky. Dude didn't even go the tribal background purely to go for a bg that gave him stealth.

those end come moments about not having to be a tribal warrior, my dad did something along to that. His thought process was this
"These guys are usually seasoned warriors, if they are still alive after fighting as long as people usually say they have, then they shouldn't be stupid." And he came up with this guy that when raging, did not fly into a blind rage. He roleplayed it such that when he raged, he began to see the world around him and the things in it as things to use against the enemy, often doing complex actions in his turn rather than attacking. It was a really cool character and I'd love to see it come back.

There's a reason we joke at our sessions that the DM is trying to take out the two druids. It's cause its not a joke.
But like, Healing Spirit for life! To all players playing druids who just want to give a big middle finger to death, Healing Spirit is a must. At least until your DM nurfs that op shit. Until then, heal like a boss while dog piling your friends cause that's like 10 rounds of some d6 healing for all your good pals while a spectral Bethesda moose gives you them good vibes.
Them and monks seem to get the most aggro, online. IDK where he got the idea Barbarians topped monks on that list.

@@Recoil1808 to be fair to him, our barbarian paladin hybrid child just tanks though just about every encounter, smashing things down in a few combat rounds while the rest of us are dealing with the adds. Us druids are just like her back up dancers, keeping everyone else alive, but otherwise just kinda there while the MC smacks down some sick beats

@@areafire1 It's not even *good,* so much as annoying, and usually for almost everyone involved (of course, there's exceptions, but you really don't see anyone singing the subclass's praises). It's basically "lol RANDOM: the class!" It might genuinely be one of the only subclasses so broken I'd disallow for my own players' good (mind you, I'd probably let somebody play a literal dragon if they had a good enough concept. Albeit not with MM stats.). Mostly because I'm not bailing them out of bad rolls they brought upon themselves, and even if there's literally trillions of them, you can't just have a god come down every time the party dies to a single player's bad luck to roll a fireball while clumped up.

Ancestral Guardian is so dope. It's the subclass I chose for my barbarian; and while it may lack in firepower, it more than makes up for it in the cool factor.
I've been playing an Ancestral Guardian barbarian for years and I love it. No force can harm anyone standing behind the wall of ghostly muscle that is my half-orc's great grandfather.

Funny thing is, that advice you gave towards the end, I did unintentionally with my very first barb.. He was an ex-gladiator toem warrior who used the animals he had killed in the arena as totems, and since it was a desert-based campaign, that meant that I turned the bear into a basilisk, etc.. Was really fun to do, and I made it so that the "tokens" you have were more like armour pieces he'd made out of the bones of the animals. He had a basilisk skull on his shoulder, it was pretty rad.
Good vid, although I still like Barbarians even if they can sometimes be pretty overpowered. Totem Warriors are one of many subclasses.

I wanted to make a barbarian that was turned into a mind flayer, but through sheer stupidity and chadness, was still mostly normal but with psionic powers( multiclass of your choice) but we needed a wizard and we apparently had three other Martial classes. I hope someone else can use the killithid to its potential.

What if someone had a totem warrior that refused to help in combat, but occasionally pulled a Navi and tried to tell the party where to go?
I really love the bloopers of Logan just doing his thing and the awkwardness/anxiety just grips him out of nowhere. It's SO relatable, the sudden tiredness too. Especially to having to DM/RP(a character) in any kind of public, non-isolated scenario.

I actually was in a game with a Totem Warrior who was based around Shark powers.
Things took damage if they hit him bare handed or tried to grapple him (shark skin can cut you), his weapons regenerated like a sharks teeth, he could smell blood from stupid distances and sense living things nearby with electroreception (didn't work on Undead or anything without a physical body, also made him hate being in populated areas), and god forbid he actually got to fight something in the water.
His spirit was completely combat based, thing would just show up at random after somebody (it didn't matter who) scored a crit that dealt damage. Every time anyone in the fight crit he'd roll a D20 and on a 19-20 a ghostly water shark thing would just pop out of the floor and start mauling some poor fucker. We called him Mr. Chomps. We loved that fucking shark.
It was actaully a lot of fun having him on the team. Same guy played a Tortle Monk once too. Hilarious.
You just might be the only person who can make me laugh while hating on my favorite D&D subclass. I love taking totem warrior bear at third level and then being neigh unkillable because the DM won't actually throw anything that could kill a totem bear barbarian at a party for fear of completely wrecking everyone else instantly.
Sorry to tell you, but you can't throw a tube screen in the trash, you just let heavy metals like Mercury into the environment... you just did it again.

When he is angry, the ground just knows better, and gives him his space. The ground knows what would come. The ground ain't stupid.
The resistance from rage is more effective than 2x hitpoints. odd damage rolls are rounded down after resistance. This can have a pronounced effect between monster types. A lot of creatures tend to either do one strong attack or multiattack for about the same damage from multiple hits. The multiattack creatures damage output can be substantially reduced depending on odd rolls.

I have a modern setting Totem Barbarian who’s a jock and their totem is their school mascot, and then when they learn a new totem that isn’t their school’s mascot, they get it from beating up other jocks and taking the patches off of their jackets (their “totems”).
I was once a Barbarian who was a hermit Firbolg that worshiped a god of writing/books (Deneir).
I went Path of the Zealot, and was the only person to survive a TPK from a giant.
My character became "Redmond the Survivor" and helped rebuild the town destroyed by said giant.
Barbarians can be great, but it takes a lot of effort on the part of both DM and player for interesting dynamics.
I really like these jokingly shade comments they make at eachother it really shows the community how great all these creators are and how they support eachother
We Play a Pathfinder Homebrew campaign and we have a shaman and a Totem Warrior and when we established backstories they spontaneously decided to be of the same tribe and so the Barbarian communicates with her totem through the Shaman and it’s the best thing ever.
My favorite thing is that bardic inspiration doesn't break rage, so you can multiclass wolf totem bard and become THE ADVANTAGE WARRIOR! Your allies shall never miss attacks again!
I tend to flavor the "rage" mechanic for my barbarians. Example, a Zealot barbarian might use his rage in the same way a cleric or paladin calls on their deity. Rather than becoming "enraged" he becomes more attuned to divine or infernal powers that were gifted to him by said god.
