BE SURE TO SET YOUR TRACK LEVEL TO 127 SO IT DOESN NOT ATTENUATE THE VOLUME!
I’ve owned my octotrack for a year and have yet to try this feature. Now that i have a digitone and analog RYTM a lot of the duties I relied on my octotrack for in my setup has been freed up. Now I’m finally making use of its other features as a mixer, external fx sends and of course now I want to try and make use of the looper for mangling or transitioning through to another project. Love this box.
Thanks, I’m a guitarist, it’s nice to see someone demonstrate and reinforce the looping feature of this machine we call Octatrack. I really love your tutorials
Thank you so much!
Man, you just made the octatrack manual obsolete. Thank you. I never knew I needed the looper until now.
This is the best quickest tutorial on a Looper with OT I've seen so far! Thanks for that.. Great channel btw! Subbed 😊
Thank you!
I'm convinced. Great concise look at looping with OT.
You’ve mentioned that you and a lot of us came from a guitar/ alternative/ rock/ metal background, and that’s something I’ve noticed as well. I think that’s why there have been a lot of incremental improvements and adjustments to keyboards like ROLI, MPE, and aftertouch - because when I first played keys I found myself wiggling my finger around on the keys like I would while playing guitar to modify pitch and add accents. Now there’s a lot of devices that implement that capability.
Totally agree, that’s one of the reasons push 3 excites me.
@@EZBOT_ Speaking of Push 3, which is awesome, I like to use my Digitakt + Syntakt with my MacBook, Live, and Push 2 when I’m doing my hybrid set or at home. It’s excellent with Overbridge. I have 8 individual DT tracks and 12 individual ST tracks I can switch between to play or even stack them by arming multiples of them at a time. I use Live’s external midi devices which have much less latency than simply running them through audio tracks like I see most people do. I love Elektron sequencers but it’s also nice to work with midi clips and automation sometimes. Plus there’s a ton of effects available to me going the hybrid route.
That was very clear, thank you so much! I want an OT MkII so baddd
Get one!
Excellent, thank you! This solved a few problems that I had in my setup.
That's great!
Short, Sweet, Super helpful. Please keep these coming.
Will do! Thank you
Thank you for this great tutorial!
great job, that's simple and easy. need to try it.
Ya, not so bad right? Thanks 😊
That is the most amazing table surface I've ever seen 😍
Fooled you, I am actually doing these tutorials from space!
Yeah man, you always have great tutorials. Very helpful, thanks
Thank you!
Thanks dude, super easy to follow
And you are an angel 😇
very nice, straight tutorials. Keep going!
Thank you!
Great Video! Thanks! Is there a way for not having to hit rec2 for playing the loop? So it automatically goes to "play" after e.g. 16 steps?
Very very cool so how much can you mangle those loops afterwards? Like you do you have the pull power of repitching, reversing, utilizing scenes etc? Thanks and love your content!
Thanks for the tute. OT rules, DT drools!
So glad I swapped over.
I love them both! Ya, OT is the boss :)
wow this helps a lot!!
That’s great!
love this kind of tutorial. short, informative, simple, no excessive "um"s or heavy breathing, not verbose at all. please keep making these. also, ive never used pickup machines before, i noticed you set it up to record the pattern length, which was 16 steps, but the loop was 2 bars, can you explain why that is?
The pattern length was quantizing the start and stop points of the recorder. So it would start at the beginning of 16
@@EZBOT_ Does the mean the loop length will be determined by when you hit the REC2 button?
Thank you. Simplicity at its best example.
I’m sure there are many more things that Elektron machines do using your simplistic method.
Maybe you could consider making a series of videos and selling it to AskVideo
Great work.
Thanks again 👏👏👏👏👏👏
My Bitwig instructor Thavius Beck already has that covered otherwise I totally would do that.
EZBOT i follow him too. Great teacher. But your three minute tuts are effective and instant result oriented 😝🤣😝
Btw when I try to dub over my first recording I always get the prompt. PB dub aborted
Why
My OT is master
I understand many complain about this but I’ve yet to find a solution over the net
How does it work do well in your project 😜😜😝
Besides why is the recorded loop so low in output
The gain control on the SRC page does not increase the volume
@@grandmasterjo1 make sure you are set to REC Trig "one2" in rec 1 menu. Try Function + midi to erase
EZBOT I did exactly that but same result.
However I opened a new project and it works 👍
While rerecording when I press Rec2 the playback of the previous recorded loops tends to get louder.
Which means the first loop recorded sounds volume 5
When I record the 2nd loop and I press Rec2 the first loop get louder volume 7
If I record the third loop and press Rec2 to stop the volume is 9
Why is the volume increasing with every next record
Sorry to bother you 😌
@@grandmasterjo1 make sure you don't adjust the gain in the src. Leave it at zero and only adjust the amp volume
I like it short but very clean explain!!!
Sub and like!!!
Forgot to say Thank You and Keep Up Bro!!!
Great video...if you do this on multiple tracks do they sync like on a conventional guitar looper say rc505? I’d like to have different drum variations to construct a complete song live? Doable?.
There is a tutorial on synced loopers by Elektron actually, it's a bit complex but you can do it easily by using PLEN and just running the sequencer like I did in the second part of the tutorial.
Did you connect your guitar straight into the Octatrack? Or any preamp or amp simulation? And thanks for your videos!
Yes, strait in with no preamp. You can adjust the amp page for more volume. Don't adjust the gain. Joyo has a cheap preamp FYI
Thanks a lot for that simple explanation!
have seen other OT videos which got me more confused than were helpful :)
your style is "keep it simple" - the best of all!!!!
Thank you so much! Keep it simple is best, I agree!
in theory, could you just program a midi foot controller to trigger the loop record function? is there a way to separate tracks on there? like can I loop a guitar, a bass, and a keyboard separately and fade them in and out as the song progresses?
Yes! That is ideal and easy to setup. If I had a midi pedal that is how I'd do this.
How do you monitor this without hearing it on one side, since the mixer is only A+B and C+D? Cuckoo a long pickup machine tutorial did a tutorial and was using a thru machine just to monitor mono inputs.
Doing it right now. You just have to set the it to record only input C (or whatever monoo input you are using) in record menu 2. Than in record menu 3 you are just adjusting the volume of inputs AB, CD
Oh, so you don’t just “play guitar”, you’re actually good at it. Well that makes one of us😅
Hey EZBOT, All your videos are really good! I have a question that maybe you can answer... Say I have a drum beat at 120 bpm and I want to record a loop without having the Octatrack change the tempo and instead stick to the beat tempo I have playing already. Is there a way to do that? Thanks for you time
Yeah, you can set the Octatrack to a fixed length. Than you decide the tempo before hand. You do this in the record menu where you also decide your inputs you're recording. Change it from Max to any number you want 64 or less. Is this what you mean?
he literally explains that in the second half of this video
@@kemasolar but did he...
Thanks for the video! I've got a stupid question: What happens after i recorded my loops? Somehow my loops disappeared when i hit stop and play again. Do i need to save them? Or do i need to switch the pick up machine back to a flex track or something?
The pick up machine is controlled by the record buttons, so if you aren’t using them after you record you won’t initiate playback. But you can put a trigger down in step editor mode to have it do auto playback
@@EZBOT_ Thanks for your help!
Is there an equivalent erase function on the MK I? There is no REC3 button on the old Octatrack.
No, there is not a shortcut key like there is on the MK2, however if you just press REC 1 again after you have already started recording it will record over instead of overdubbing.
You can press func + clear after you opened the audio editor (rec1 + edit).
can you add different samples and mangle tracks to the loop? what internal effects are available?
You can and there is a long list of fx
Nice explanation. Two thing i do not understand when trying this on my mk1. The pickup machine does not overdub when it reaches max length instead it erases the previous recording. And the other strange is that I can not preview/ hear the pickup machine recording. Only the live signal.
Make sure to set your rec1 settings to ONE2 not 1. Also in the second page make sure to turn AB or CD up to 127.
zbs thanks. But it’s set to one2 and I have the level on screen two set to 100.
That's a basic looper, is there a way of making multiple adjoined loopers, with undo/redo capability and techniques like loop stacking and stereo loops, A-B song part loops etc?
Elektron has a fairly thorough video on making an adjoined looper. Unfortunately I do not plan on making another looper tutorial anytime soon but I will continue making Octatrack tutorials in general. Thanks for watching!
Can you resample and remix loops in real-time? I'm a vocalist and keyboardist in training and while I enjoy loopers, I'd like to manipulate the loops I create more thoroughly in a live setting.
Yes you can!
@@EZBOT_ wow that's huge. if you ever post a tutorial I'm in.
When I try to add to the loop by pressing REC1, I always get the message P1 DUB ABORTED. Any ideas on what setting I may mistakenly adjusted. Great video btw.
Looks like I accidentally bumped the Pitch
How do I make it not double the volume everyone I overdub? Many thanks
Make sure your source isn’t the master
If you are looping some audio and then change the tempo, will the loop automatically be time stretched? So that timing and pitch will stay the same?
Fantastic video EZ! Quick question, doing this how long of a loop could you record? Can it go up pretty high in terms of seconds/minutes?
You could record as long as you like. There are limitations to how quantized it will be too your other tracks. You can also do everything manually.
Im trying and when I’m trying to loop for example 2 bars at 70bpm , when push record2 to finish the loop and replay it octatrack changes de bpm to the double . Why this happened?
I'm having a hell of a time using this machine as a guitar looper. I'm a shitty guitar player, so I need more than a second to prepare. What I do is I set the pattern length and record length both to 64. Then, I set a one-time recording trig on the 33rd step of the sequencer and turn on the metronome. This gives me a count of two bars, then the recording starts. I want the Pickup machine to record the length of the loop ONCE, then stop recording and begin to play the loop back. The only TRIG setting that works this way is HOLD. I'm not sure why that is, but I just roll with it. So I get a 64 step loop this way, but hell if I know how to get it to play if I have to stop the sequencer. It just won't play. Plus, I'm not able to figure out how to overdub on the loop. I've read the manual on the Pickup machines several times and I think I've watched every tutorial about it on YT, but I'm not able to find anything that works. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
toptoptop thks ;-)
Is this method, Recording when play Instrument/Synth, if not, is it possible?
You can use a synth too of course, if that is what you mean?
@@EZBOT_ no, i mean recording when play.
2:03
Too bad the recorder trigs click like crazy.... people call it a clickup machine.
That has not been the case for me, but I have heard that
@@EZBOT_ it happens when you initiate the recorder with a record trig in a pickup machine.
@@IIrandhandleII Gotcha, I guess I have just missed it. The pops and clicks in the Octatrack are impossible to completely avoid sadly
