The Oak Ridge Boys and Alabama are among the inspirations for the acapella group Home Free. They got to work with the Oaks on a couple songs including Elvira, which was probably the Oaks biggest hit and well worth the reaction.
@@Wildecat10 Thank God For Kids - might be up there with Elvira, I would probably have them tied - both of those have been 2 of my all time favorites of theirs.
These guys...❤❤....and the staler brothers...grew up on them...at 72 still listening. To many great songs to mention! My dad use to sing Flowers on the Wall a lot...lol..by the Statlers. Out standing base singers..in both groups. Such harmony....good memories❤❤
I've followed this group since their gospel days. And since my fiancee died at a young age, their song "I Guest It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes" became a source of comfort. Then they came out with a music video which reinforced it even more because my fiancee looked very much like singer Lorrie Morgan, who appears in the video.
I grew up listening to these guys and the Satler Brothers as my mom played their records back in the early 80s...brings back some great memories...Thanks for the reaction.
Great Selection ! Oak Ridge Boys, ... Statler Brothers. Both with a great blend of Voices Bringing a Barbershop Blend to Country Music. my Daddy got baptized as a 50 year old former alcoholic, a friend from church said she could hear the Oak Ridge Boys singing about the baptism of Jesse Taylor. That song always makes me think of Dad and grace and new starts. Well worth a listen.
You gotta check out their signature hit, “Elvira.” I was kind of a country hater in my preteens when Elvira came out and I thought it was pretty corny. But now that I’m in my early 50s, I think it’s aged pretty well. The bass vocal hook is pretty cool. 😎
My favorite ORB tune will always be GI Joe & Lily, written by Joe Bonsall, as well as his book of the same title. It’s about his PARENTS and tells the true story of how they fell in love. I am misting up thinking about it, and how much it mirrors my own parents’ story! Love ya Sebs! - Guy
The Oak Ridge Boys brought me and my best college friend together. End of first Semester 1982, campus was cleaning out, and Di had an extra ticket for the ORBs. We had a great time and ended up sharing an apartment the next 2 1/2 years. She brought some amazing people into my life, and I still love every single one of them.
When I was growing up, The Oak Ridge Boys and The Statler Brothers started out as Gospel groups. On Sunday mornings, our family would listen to The Florida Boys Show as we were getting ready for church. I remember when both groups transitioned over to more country music though they both still added Gospel in their performances. Both groups have lost members due to aging. But I still love to hear them sing.❤❤❤
50 years late Sebs..lol..but great that u found them..this was their first country song after they left Southern Gospel..went number one on the charts..great job..u should definitely listen to more..especially the worldwide Elvira..Bass singer Richard Sturban once traveled with Elvis
I come to this channel because Sebs and his wife are so genuine. The commentary is free flowing and very insightful for me as an old guy and for younger folks who get to experience some really great past hits.
I love watching you enjoy a song new to you. I am 78 and grew up listening during the 50’s,60’s 70’s and on until today. Blessed to have classical music and the Statler brothers living just a few miles down the road. Blue grass has always warmed my heart. Music from John Williams then going to a concert of Mozart or a great Hallelujah chorus . When my mother passed we ended the service with a guitar, banjo and dosimeter singing I will fly away. Music is just so important for life. So enjoy your reactions. Keep them coming ❤
I love the same groups as you though I'm closer to Oak Ridge TN. I've told my family that at my funeral they are supposed to sing "I've ( Flown) away 😊
Please do Alabama (Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry, and Jeff Cook are cousins and come from Fort Payne, Alabama. Jeff Cook passed away from Parkinson's Disease back in either 2021 or 2022) and The Statler Brother (2 of them Harold and Don Reid are twin brother). They've got so many great songs. They are from Stanton, Virginia
Sebs, you are by far my favorite reactor. You are so real, and forthcoming my kids always said I would open my home to everyone. With a good meal of course. So if you’re ever in my part of the country, come down to the “y’all come back house “
Always loved this song, but I really like the original better. They could still sing in their later years (obviously). But their younger, stronger voices in the original really made the song better. Some other great songs by the Oak Ridge Boys worth checking out: "Thank God for Kids" ; "I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes" ; "Elvira" ; "American Made" ; "You're the One"
Sebs, I've been an Oaks fan since they made the transition from gospel to country in the 1970's. This video was made toward the end of their career, so it's really not their best. I'm thrilled that you listened to the original version, when they were all in their prime voices. Keep exploring the Oak Ridge Boys. You won't be disappointed.
I saw them live and man they blew everyone away . The night I saw them it was an open venue and I was standing in the parking lot waiting to go in the sang their song Elvira and when Richard hit the um bop a ba ba it sounded like it shook the roof they was such a great legendary country group and was still touring before Joe passed
ELVIRA is a huge hit for the Oak Ridge Boys. Def worth a listen. Thank you sooooo much for this reaction. Makes me misty eyed for my childhood and country livin'.
I grew up listening to The Oaks. Just straight up great music (except for Elvira). Richard Sterban(bass) occasionally moonlighted by doing backing vocals for Elvis. Leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight, Sail Away, Trying to love two women, Thank God for kids, and I’ll be true to you are just a very small sample. Of course, ALL of their Gospel music.
I came here to say Elvira with The Oak Ridge Boys and Home Free! - but others have already said it - but yes!! you need to! Austin is wearing a shirt from an Oak Ridge Boys concerts from years past! I saw the boys live at Oregon State Fair back in the '80's. Amazing talent. I have loved them forever.
Watching this gave me so much pleasure. I'm a 72 year old woman laying around my house recovering from back surgery. Videos like yours are helping me stay sane and lightening my heart. Thank you so much, Sebs. I love your musical intelligence, regardless of genre.
True country. No frills, videos, smoke and mirrors. Just an acoustic guitar and great voices. Songs that everyone can identify with and that you know the words to. Pure unadulterated country.
Interesting fact about the Oak Ridge Boys, the band actually started in 1945 as the Oak Ridge Quartet and changed to the Oak Ridge Boys in 1962. The current lineup started in 1973 when Joe Bonsall joined the group. You should listen to the Oaks song "Elvira" and then listen to the re-make of it they did with the acapella group, Home Free. Great stuff! On a side note, the older guitar player on the far left in this video is Sheriff Jimmy Capps, an illustrious country guitarist with a 50+year career has a member of the house band for the Grand Ole Opry which began in 1967 and lasted up to the week before his death in 2020. Capps was also a first-call session guitarist, lending his skills to a litany of timeless country hits, including Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler,” George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and George Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning,” Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man,” Barbara Mandrell’s “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool" and the Oak Ridge Boys' “Elvira.” He was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2014. On hearing of Capp's death the Oak Ridge Boys wrote on Twitter: "The heavenly choir has gained one of the finest players to ever play, and quite frankly one of the finest men to ever live,"
These guys knew how to get their fans rockin’ and clappin’ at their concerts!! They were very popular in the 70s and 80s.. often an opening act for some of the big country music stars (Roy Clark, and others). But they became headliners on their own with this line-up. I had the pleasure of seeing the live a couple of times.. they didn’t disappoint! Thanks for sharing.. great memories for many of us ‘of a certain age’!
One of the greatest records of The 80’s! The guy playing guitar is The Late Jimmy Capps. He was a long time house band guitar player at The Grand Ole Opry, but also one of the most utilized guitar players on country music records throughout the 70’s 80’s and 90’s! He was a great guy. And I believe he’s playing on the original as well. (I’d have to look on the back of the record to be sure).
I grew up listening to The Oak Ridge Boys. My absolute favorite by them is Sail Away. I would love for you to do a reaction to that one! ALWAYS enjoy yóur reactions! Thank you!!
My first concert was to see the Oak Ridge Boys back in 1985 and they were great....their biggest hit was Elvira I called the local radio daily to request it.
More senior than you. Lol. I'm 67 and love your reactions. Btw, I can tell you are great family man, and I respect that. Plus, you keep it clean. Rock on, country on my friend!!!
I just had an idea, Sebs! There’s a video on RUclips of Vince Gill singing Elvira. He’s joined by the bass singer and another singer in the group. They do a cool bluesy version of the song, and you still get the bass vocal hook I was talking about in my previous comment. You should definitely check that out. Cool stuff.
In several of the Elvis Presley videos, especially the ones featuring Elvis in his hotel room, you can see Elvis with a bunch of singers, sitting around the piano singing gospel songs. One of those guys is almost always Richard Sturban. He is the one in this video with the long straight black hair that has the very deep bass voice. Richard sang with Elvis from 1970-1972 as part of Elvis' back up gospel group "J.D. Sumner and the Stamps".
i first saw this group back in the early 70's as a warm up group for Kenny Rodgers. They put on a better show than Rodger's did. Have been a fan ever since. 🙂
These guys are legendary in Gospel and Country music. Their heydey was in the 80's with songs like Elvira, Bobbie Sue, You're The One in A Million, American Made. Thanks for the reaction!
The first version was when they were on a show called Larrys Country Diner. If you want some country comedy mixed with iconic Country entertainers, then Larrys is a rabbit hole you should explore.
The Oak Ridge Boys always made everything happy. BTW, the "sheriff" playing guitar name is Jimmy Capps. He was a regular on that TV show but he was also a guitar legend in Nashville. He was a part of the "A-Team" of studio musicians and member of the grand ole opry band. The historic songs albums/songs he played on is unbelievable.
You asked so I am answering. I am here for two reasons: One, experiencing music from the past with someone who hasn't heard it before is almost as good as hearing it for the first time myself, and second, I love seeing a younger generation discover what the "old ways" have offer and how the music is still relevant. Play on young brother and let us all be united in music!
Tenor on the left and that deep bass on the far right. My Dad loved this back in the day when they were all young men. The bass was phenomenal and had deep black hair. The hair is much longer on all of them in their old age. I love it. My father would have never watched them if they had long hair back in their heyday. But, they've still got it. So sorry to hear about the passing of the tenor. Boy, he could sing,! They used to joke around on stage too and they also sing gospel. You didn't have to be religious to enjoy their sound.
The Oak Ridge Boys and the Statler Brothers are legends! In this video, starting to the guitarist's left is: Joe Bonsall (RIP), Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban. Please react to ORB "Thank God For Kids". It makes this subscriber cry.
Really enjoy this Oak Ridge Boys reaction. This song reminds me of the years spent on ranches where my husband worked as a cowboy, “riding for cows and fixing fences”. And he looked very much the part.
I would really recommend listening to them in their prime. They still sound great here, but when they were younger, their voices and harmony were just incredible. Anywhere from late 70's to early 2000's. They always sing full voice, and the boys described their sound as 4 Peterbilt trucks coming at you in a tunnel, lol. Country singing with a rock beat and gospel harmonies. You can find their appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson when they were at their peak. Incredible singing.
This is bizarre.... haven't heard rhis song from them in YEARS, but I've been singing it to myself at home for the last THREE DAYS for some reason, and now you post this.... just freaky, but loved your reaction!! Someone else mentioned the Statlet Bros.... definitely another great path to go down, especially "I Was There" and "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories".
Saw them at the Alabama Theater in Myrtle Beach the last time they sang there before Joe passed. He had to be helped on and off the stage and looked so weak…until he began to sing and the fire was in his eyes and he beamed that huge smile! Got to meet William Lee Golden after the show and have our picture taken with him. Such a thrill! Rest in Peace Joe!
Home Free did a collaboration with the Oaks with "Elvira". You should try that version. It's pretty cool with 9 guys doing an acapella rendition of a pretty classic Oak Ridge Boys tune.
Love the Oak Ridge Boys. Saw them just a couple of years ago. Several times over the years. Richard Sterban sang with Elvis. They are freaking awesome.
In 1982, I got to see Oak Ridge Boys in person at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (maybe 30 miles from Oak Ridge, TN) when I worked at the university - I took the teenage daughter of my best friend with me to see them (she had missed out on a concert a couple of weeks earlier and I asked my friend if I could take her daughter to make up for not being able to see them earlier). It was a great concert and we both got contact highs due to all of the smoke at the football stadium.
They are older here, but still can sing amazingly!! You should listen to them when they were younger. You will be blown away! Well, you beat me to it! Haha!!
HOW did I not know they were from Oak Ridge, TN?!?! It's literally right up the road from me (though, I am a transplant, but I have been to or through Oak Ridge many, many times). I remember their "Elvira" song from back in the 80s. So glad you're finding these slightly obscure, but also not obscure groups and appreciating them!!
Hi there from Tehachapi Ca. Sebs’ How about a listen to Highway 101 , country group from Canada. They were fantastic and in the 80s you couldn’t go to any country western bar or Dancehall without hearing their music. How about trying / Who’s Lonely Now or Whisky if you were a Woman ! You’ll love them we sure did. They were fantastic and some of the best two-step music to dance to in the 80s. I bet you’ll love them . And I want to tell you something about Neil Young. You need to read his biography as he was a native North American from Canada his bloodline anyway, and used to sing a lot of tribal music when he was that age that you showed tonight when Neil was a younger man, and also did you know that he was part of Crosby ,Stills, Nash and Young ?
When I was young the Oak Ridge Boys were on the radio a lot. Especially if you were a country music fan and listened to country stations. They were very popular. I am proably the same age as those guys in that band.
The Statler brothers and oak ridge boys are amazing, still listen to them both as much as possible

Gatlin Brothers are in that mix.

"Flowers on the wall" was a Roger Miller song, another amazing song writer and performer. The Statler brothers took it to another level.
The Statlers version of Ricky Nelsons Mary Lou is fantastic

The Oak Ridge Boys and the Statler Brothers are legends! In this video, starting to the guitarist's left is: Joe Bonsall (RIP), Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban. Please react to ORB "Thank God For Kids". It makes this subscriber cry.
Another hit of theirs I love is Dream On. Saw them live in Tucson and they are everything that’s special about music.
Really enjoy this Oak Ridge Boys reaction. This song reminds me of the years spent on ranches where my husband worked as a cowboy, “riding for cows and fixing fences”. And he looked very much the part.
I just found you tonight and I'm from Oak Ridge. So I know these guys. I love your real reactions
❤ good song RIP JOE 😢
This is bizarre.... haven't heard rhis song from them in YEARS, but I've been singing it to myself at home for the last THREE DAYS for some reason, and now you post this.... just freaky, but loved your reaction!!
Someone else mentioned the Statlet Bros.... definitely another great path to go down, especially
"I Was There" and "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories".
I have had their greatest hits album memorized since I was in elementary school. Love it!
I've been listening to them since I was just a mere child, iconic in country music ❤
There were so many that when I watch these videos I'm always thinking oh wow I forgot about them. So much music. 67 years old here.
So many great songs! Superb harmonies. R.I.P. Joe Bonsall
Talk about a rabbit hole of music!! Great group!
Hi there from Tehachapi Ca.
Sebs’ How about a listen to
Highway 101 , country group from Canada.
Honestly seb, these are my favourite reaction videos from you.
Oak Ridge Boys was my first famous band concert. They were amazing!
How can you not start feeling while listening to them! Amazing!!!
One of my favorites by them. I have always loved it.
When I was young the Oak Ridge Boys were on the radio a lot. Especially if you were a country music fan and listened to country stations. They were very popular. I am proably the same age as those guys in that band.
Love love The Oak Ridge Boys and The Statler Brothers. You can't beat those groups❤
Wow. I haven’t seen these guys in 20 years. But I love their music.
My girls and I wore out the Oak Ridge Boys cassette as we listened to them constantly. As we also did with Alabama.
HomeFree with Jeffrey East and the Oak Ridge Boys sing Beautiful Star of Betham. ❤😅😊
Oh yes, this one is fantastic!
Yes that is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs Ever.
My mom loved the Oak Ridge Boys. They have been around for decades.
The Oak Ridge Boys. A masterclass in harmonies.
