Cluck Ol Hen - Fretless Friday 4

  • Well, I may have been fretting a bit this friday, thanks to that darn Ozma. I think the song sounds cool on the fretless though! Might try it again with more drop thumb/syncopation type variations. And I'm not exaggerating when I say I spent an hour trying to get Ozma to play that drum. I tried setting it up on the grass, on the porch, putting different treats on it, but she simply refused. Ah well. At least the weather was nice, and you got to see some of the other chickens! The black fluffy one is Squidward, the yellow one is Billina, the black and white striped one is Toto, and of course, the silver-grey one is Ozma.

I serendipitously discovered birds are fascinated with a glass slide (“bottleneck”). I first saw this whilst taking cover from the July sun in the shade of some desert bush in southern Utah: the smallest hummingbird I ever saw-all white with black beak and legs-started bothering me as I used my bic lighter to play slide on a cheap guitar I bought for the motorcycle trip which had made itself impossible to tune. At first I thought I was inadvertently bothering its nest-but then it wasn’t nesting season. It got very close to me-I could have easily grabbed it-so my road-dusted eyes could see it very clearly: when I slid the note up, it rapidly scratched its ear with its foot; if I slid the note down, it’s make it’s little buzzy-chirp sound.
I tried this in different binary combinations, up or down, to make sure the bird was responding consistently the way I described. I finished my beer and roared off to cooler climes northward (it was 110ºF that afternoon. Next day it was riding in snow coming into Calgary after an all-nighter-still I never forgot that little hummer).
I’ve repeated this exercise with other birds species in other places and conclude: songbirds (and hummers, to some extent) are more fascinated by the to super-clear slide sound made by glass on bare steel strings than are territorial birds like crows, jays, woodpeckers, towhees, &c (although I might make an exception for the fleeting titmouse).
I saw Bruce Cockburn play slide on a fretted steel-stringed banjo, so I got me a banjo (I already played slide guitar)-but this was some years before I discovered how some birds are quite taken by the sound of a slide. You oughta check it out, maybe-although chickens and turkeys seem pretty aloof to music (I could be wrong).
I got rid of the banjo (logging camps prefer guitars, I found-or, rather, was warned…) Decades later I built a mountain banjo, fretless of course, fishing string-a nice, quiet way to relax on the veranda after dinner. Even so, one of the workers on the house renovation next door said, upon introduction, “Oh, so YOU”RE the banjo guy…” I told the neighbour on the other side of me that I’d been building a mountain banjo and alls he said was, “I know…” Then again, some Albanian tourist who spotted me in the ferry lineup playing my mountain banjo thought it was just the best thing, took a bunch of photos and heartily shook my hand like we was long lost cousins. Go figure!
Hail to the original, all-American instrument.

Remember the showbiz saying: never work with children or animals! Incidentally, the old Scottish fiddle tune "The Hen's March o'er the Midden" might suit the banjo.
