  • While visiting the production of House of the Dragon's second season, Adam learns the various ways that dragon fire is practically created using different types of flamethrowers and custom fire rigs. Special effects technician Julian Butterfield walks Adam through a series of demonstrations ranging from a backpack flamethrower to a rig that uses 50 liters of fuel in one blast!

    • @nak3dxsnake
      @nak3dxsnake 21 день назад +6

      Yeah reign of fire thought through these things. I think the dragons even had double nozzles in their biology.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 20 дней назад +5

      @@nak3dxsnake Yup. They had two fire dispensers, and they used a cone to make it realistic (because just air isn't enough). A living breathing creature would "breathe" the stuff out and the pressure of their lungs would make it expand just after. They actually scienced this down to a T. I'm not particularly impressed with HotD's fire, because it goes by ideas that aren't realistic to the fact that a dragon would have a limited lung capacity. It's a breath infused with fire, not a magical pentagram in the sky releasing fire. Oh well, at least they tried.

    • @MettleSoul
      @MettleSoul 17 дней назад +2

      @@aserta IMO it works for GoT/HoTD compared to RoF. Reign of Fire's dragons were made as realistically as possible, whereas A Song of Ice and Fire's dragons are inherently magical. They're fire made flesh. In ASOIAF fire is the preferred method of human sacrifice and it's theorized that's why old Valyrian dragons, Balerion, and Drogon all got as large as they did. Not only were they free to fly around, but they regularly burned humans to death. They made magically potent human sacrifices that contributed to their growth and power.
      Gotta respect the production teams behind both, but especially HoTD. HoTD uses as little VFX fire as possible because it doesn't look as good or light a scene the way a real fire does. A lot of the actors will actually be set on fire for scenes. They have some seriously amazing procedures in place that puts the actors in very little risk and it looks all the more spectacular for it.

    • @brolohalflemming7042
      @brolohalflemming7042 14 дней назад +5

      @@MettleSoul I think this is one of the fun balancing acts between fantasy and reality, ignoring the idea of a realistic dragon. RoF came up with a biologically plausible solution to igniting fuel with the idea of a hypergolic mixture so that dragons wouldn't need a pilot light. HoTD goes with magic, but then why would their fire get dirtier as they get older? I guess that's the problem with getting older and being an engineer. Sometimes it gets harder to suspend disbelief and look for plot holes. Like what happens when a dragon hiccups?

    In college (~30 years ago) we found out the coffee creamer trick. We also tested and found out that CoffeeMate brand was too high quality to burn, so we would raid the Hardee's for their off-brand cheap stuff. Then we'd hide closed packets around friends apartments for them to find later. They ask "why are you trying to burn my place down?" Of course it would never burn in a sealed packet. Sprinkling it lightly over a flame gave just enough air to produce a nice, safe(ish) fireball.

I remember at Maker Faire 2009, when I was there for doing the demo of the Hackerbot Labs quarter shrinker (which can be seen at v=9UOFrqxD5C8, where I'm visible in some portions), there was a dragon sculpture, that had fire probably a bit smaller than what this forklift is doing, but still pretty big... And I was far enough away from it that I could have measured the speed of sound by it, because I'd feel the heat on my face, as the Infrared Light got to me almost instantly, and then later I'd hear the sound. Wild.

    You can prevent the freezing on the tank-side by submerging it in a trash can filled with water.
    For gigantic ones fired in bursts, an old fire extinguisher as an intermediate tank gives it more punch and helps against "water hammer" when repeatedly, quickly closing the magnetic valve.
