Incredibly articulate and each point literally came back to me as he explained what I had experienced on my ‘89 YZ250W at perris or carlsbad.. MX is so much an exit game as he described.. how much inertia can you utilize from your entrance into a corner with throttle, straightline braking, trail braking if you came in too hot, and finally, smooth application of throttle and feathered clutching if needed- minimizing fighting the bike and traction control vs. one fluid movement to maximize carrying that speed out of a turn- that’s the EXIT GAME that can make or break your track speed!! Great job teaching Ryan. PB

as somebody who raced a '86 CR250 for 4 yrs, Ryno is spot on. Also, I remember the stock bars being real narrow and swooped back compared to the 125...but man, they both handled like a dream. And yes, the rear of the seat being raised would try and kick your ass (literally) over the bars if you got into trouble.

Hey Ryan, I know you must’ve worked on your suspension but it must still be quite a bit off from modern suspension being such a small diameter, conventional fork. Would be interesting to get your thoughts on that.
Also I find the flatter more modern seats are easier to do the weight transfer forward when cornering in deep ruts for example. The old seat would guide you to the front centre but not the very front where you need to sit, basically on the tank.
Love your technical perspective though and your vid‘s. Wife and I want to come down and train with you for a few weeks this winter, I left you a message on your site. We are coming down from Canada in the RV loaded with bikes 💪 Cheers

Having ridden and competed on an 86' cr250 waaaaay back then.
They WERE the pick bike in the 250 class back then. As it was one of the first MX bikes, you didn't need to rev its nuts off all the time, and brake as late as you dare into any corner all of the time. On that Stroker it was all about HIGH SPEED ENTRY into corners, keeping up your momentum, keeping OFF its brakes, to keep its rear end firmly planted, and yes sacrificing a bit on corner exit speed, but with its powerband, the bike didn't really care what gear you selected on corner entry, generally a gear higher than all other 250's of the day.
As far as riding style and balance. As its front end/forks weren't anything to write home about, even back then. I tended to aim my body weight way over the back of the bike, trying in my head to sit on its rear mudguard! So much more further over the rear of the bike than a current 450 4-stroke. So the bike didn't need any caressing, just LOCK your knees into the airbox rails as hard as you could...and twist the throttle. to only around 3/4 opening, and HANG on!!!!!!!!!
Here endeth page 101 of the 2T Bible.

I race a vintage bike once in awhile (yz465, husky 500cr) I notice if I go out late in the day after the modern bikes it seem the ruts develop "narrower" therefore catching the fork under hang more so than back in the day when everybody's forks drug thru a rut (made it wider). Don't know if that makes sense but thats what I think, or I'm just slow AF nowadays, haha.

Ironically i talk about my 86 CR because it was honda production rule bike an it had a lot of good stuff..for a first race bike i was not ready for...most of which was the silent an beautifully balanced factory honda HRC Crankshaft that had great low end for a 2 stroke an made no vibe to let u know warp was coming u had to be ready...i say its power was like a modern 450...because as 2 strokes go not many if any had good low end not most of which were top 4 japanese brands in stock trim they had no low end an were very scary the honda was a team bike descuised as a production bike...but either way we are comparing two strokes to 4 strokes ..4 stroke are way easier to make go faster...not easier to ride...but they get traction an go like the twice as fast as the wind a 2 stroke required a skilled clutch work...which coming from a 4 stroke took me a while...i was used to in 1979 a 4 stroke just twist an go tons of torque...

But honestly a win. I know I was personally watching those races to see YOU on THAT bike. It was cool emig chose a smoker. But if he would if rolled a 97 kx 250 it would of bin dope. Jonhson junior hes alway tippie toeing the 86 around a corner in a very upright position...he said he liked the forks an motor...the low end was pure team honda...that rip off the bottom...that all other 2 strokes never had...exvept the euro bikes maico husky an those bikes with more enduro heritage....the low end 2 stroke power never happened in america suzuki makes a quick snap low end power shot all other stock bikes left that part of the motor baron...so their team riders could kill us with 5 times the motor...works bikes....now u can walk in an buy a raceable bike thats the big varible

Dude those space age 4 strokes make you lazy and round off your edge bottom line you can analize the geometry and have nasa come fix your suspension blah blah those "autotuned" hyper four strokes you lose all those skills period you can ride that or any other 2 stroke in race trim and practice until its time to push into the gate with the four stroke . And you will be way ahead and be faster its amazing how soft people get . That old POS does have almost as much power its just delivered over 15% of the entire rpm range where the 4stk delivers its power over the whole rpm range and available Being able to uncork the beast on a two stroke is as much art as it is skill (04 MXdN RC CR250 masterpiece of riding) I grew up racing NESC. and then WillowSPringsMC I got my first 4 strk when i was 6, XR75 my second was 3 years ago a honda 1100BlackBird. after RG 500s Rz350s RDs etc.. The best training for this weird era of racing is two stroke practice, 4stroke race, you cant go the other way ... Like a great musician practices with a click and never performs with one. the modern (too fast for your brain) four strokes are the coffin opening on motocross racing as we knew it... the speed more and more coming from the pit not the rider . this sport needs a stewardship to preserve its innocence ... You are the coolest rider ever I have been a fan forever I miss the racing world it is breaking my heart to watch it self destruct , How fun was riding that bike at lorettas ?? you just need your chops back ride that bike a few weeks and only that bike then jump on the titanium lawnmower and see how fast and ahead of your race you are..
You are one of the handful of greats we have stay involved don't let the Aldin bakers put everyone in the hospital ... you said the best thing of gypsy tales " Those 450s are no fun to ride, at all !" ...#4strokesRSatanic peace brotha

      I have (5) 2 strokes and (4) 4 stokes. Ile take a 2 stroke all day everyday.
So don't think I'm hating on the 86 cr.
Just the reality is 4 strokes did not take over or turn faster lap times do to peak hp n torque. The are just easier to ride and make power that equates to what wins races.. traction

@@andychips6923 LMAO! Right? Emig’s built 150 would eat that CR on a dyno. IF there ever was a 52HP number published somewhere, it was taken from the countershaft, not the rear wheel. Probably lost half of it’s power the second it touched 8,000 RPMs. I love smokers, but those old Japanese bike were basically equal and less usable than the modern 250F.

@@dormantmenace And don't forget Ryan had his CR250 completely tricked out. I think it was Pro circuit who did it...
Sure, you need to KNOW how to ride to ride a 2 stroke. Anybody can hop on a 4 stroke and do horrible mistakes and pretty much be ok, since as you said the power is more progressive.
But the 2 stroke 250's made at least 52 HP upwards, and had more torque than the 4 strokes.

You should put those fuel additives in the tank and stop sniffing them. A good 86 250 made 35 or 36 horsepower. During the 80s I was at dyno tests for every bike made. The CR500 made just over 50.
