Hi Harley, I watched this after 3 Peaks in March (my 5th). My mate sent me the link and said watch this idiot as you said 3 Peaks was an easy ride. I watched and listened closely, in particular to the eat enough, drink enough and use the right gears. I am 186cm and 90kg and have always struggled with strength up the back of Falls. I put a 30 on the rear for the Peaks Challenge Cradle Mountain on Sunday (used to run a 28) and ate and drank more than normal. I had a ripper ride and finished the last 30km smashing rolling turns with my mate. Thanks heaps for making the time to tell people practical and simple things to help their riding!
Really appreciate you making me realise this - I had no idea and my first time up Norton was a joke. I was struggling with hard gears cos I thought when I was spinning I was doing it wrong. Cheers Harley.
This is NOT an easy ride, definitely not for the faint hearted. Just one of these climbs is enough let alone all three together. You've underestimated how brutal this is!!
I did 3 peaks 2 years ago as a vegan, was a tough hot day out. Finished in 10 hours, made the mistake of beans for lunch and Cadel bars on the ride. Bunged me up! Hydra lite was too strong, had a coat of white salt on me at the end! Should have stuck with bananas and dates too. Was stuck with 39/28 and I payed for it on final climb with 210 in the legs, the fatigue will destroy your strength. 34/28 at least! Also, sit in with big bunches on the flats to conserve energy and also less time on the course! Plenty of kamakazi on the descents with a couple hitting the deck and or side of the mountains! Be careful! It is an enjoyable ride, see it as a long day on the bike and be regular siping water/electrolyte and eating/grazing on carbs all day. Have fun guys!
Mob Barley total elevation is still less than a half Everest for the 3 peaks ride. Mountains here in Victoria, Australia are tiny. The highest peak is only 1980m in Victoria!
what data fields do you have on your Garmin to help you pace ? is it wt/kg ? do you use NP to make sure you don't surge over the course of a long ride ?? thanks
I currently have sram Apex gruppo and want to get a stages powermeter. I was looking at the rival. Can i just buy the rival crank arm or must i purchase the whole crankset? Cheers.
Chow Mama I think you can just get the crank arm, the whole crankset will just give you both left/right power as opposed to single sided power. Hope that helps :)
Do cyclists really think they can do stimulants and painkillers and think that drinking plenty of fluids will counter the dehydrating effects? Either in the ride or on the recovery there are three diffy kinds of hydration that i can think of: Blood plasma, muscles and skin. Drinking a lot of water when you're tweeking or slamming the ibu or opiates cannot rehydrate you adequately by flooding the kidneys with water. YOu're body just will not uptake it....enter John The Baptist. Get it through the skin - pour it on yourself or step into a shower or bath. And having water in the muscles begins days ago and days to lose so it's a slow process to re-uptake...but for muscles you gotta have potassium (banana power). Water weighs a lot...

The elevation on here is the sum of all the climbing sections...not just the highest point

Why don't you do the same route and show us how its done?
It would be cool to see some more footage of some of your own rides. Always enjoyable to see how you pace.
Have you ever done 3P ? That vid is a load of bollocks... "not even hard" pin a number on see how you go.
I love how he says it's easy. I have never ridden 200km with zero elevation.
Love the climbing tips...Great comments...again.
What was your time?
Please record as much of the ride as you can, good luck.
Hahaha 5:40 laughed so fucking hard

I win races on my 3 gears dutch bicycle. Black stripes on the lane are my powermeter...
Great video
