      The source of Kenya's debt problem is Eurobond and China loans taken up before by previous administration(s). These debts have a high interest rate and Kenya has been unable to pay them back (due to corruption, mismanagement, incompetence, etc.). Defaulting on these debts will for example lead to Mombasa Port, which was posted as collateral for these loans, being handed over to the Chinese. Chinese loans have floating interest rates, set at either 3.6 or three percent above the LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate) average. To avoid defaulting on these debts Ruto has taken up an IMF loan to pay the Chinese and other commercial creditors. Think of this as borrowing from Henry to pay Chen. The IMF loans have significantly lower interest rates and longer payback time, however, the IMF loan comes with certain conditions such as increased taxes and removal of subsidies towards correcting macroeconomic imbalances. Ruto and IMF are the good guys and all of this and the Kenyans would do well by supporting their efforts. The alternative such as handing over assets like the Mombasa port to the Chinese is much worse.

      @@sognenIt is better to be in debt to China than IMF and westerners (obviously being in debt to nobody is the ideal). IMF's forced neoliberal reforms will open up the country to exploitation and enslavement by foreign multinational corporations

    Foreign investment comes with consequences.

    • @tsurutom
      @tsurutom 3 месяца назад

      That's right, and the consequences usually are: the investors make insane profits, thus siphoning off more resources than they brought in (why else would they take the deal?) with most of the locals being worse off than before, with a few fancy houses and some token infrastructure for them to admire; they are kept too poor to afford any of those. They're for the local politicians and other puppets. The rest of the population gets fed the usual lie of "just work harder and you can afford it, too!" - more power to anyone who sees through the BS.

    Ruto said IMF and WORLD BANK lends AFRICAN countries money at 10 to 15 times higher interest rates that other developed countries so why should he still borrow from IMF. IMF is not to help developing countries but to keep them poor. It is time AFRICAN countries stop borrowing from IMF or WORLD BANK. Burkina Faso refused their loan and yet they are so poor so why can't all African countries do likewise. The Plan of the west is to make sure Africa stays economically strangled.

    It is enshrined in the constitution the right to peaceful protest. The guy they killed is unjust and the government should compensate the family handsomely to redeem itself. It is meant dissuade this gen Z and create fear in them. Police brutality and corruption is second nature to them. Being a victim myself at one point I know how they operate. That guy didn't die in the street. He was probably killed behind the scene to make a point.
    Moreover, it behoves his Excellency Ruto to reject this bill. You are shooting yourself in the foot.
