Yay...you reviewed a Pentax. Another thing to point out is that the Pentax has a much better viewfinder than the other cameras in its class (e.g., Nikon D5500, Canon T6i) resulting in bigger, brighter images in the viewfinder. They use a pentaprism instead of a mirror, which is generally only found in cameras over $1,000 - the image has 100% coverage and .95 magnification....the others in the K-S2 class aren't even close. It focuses in near darkness down to -3 EV (not sure if the others can do that). You can also fine tune 20 lenses in the K-S2 (no fine tuning in D5500 or T6i). BTW, it has focus peaking, which is awesome if you do landscapes, close ups, macro, etc. I'm less inclined to pull out my Nikons because I miss it so much when I do. It also has a lot more high-end features than the other ones in its class, but its achiles heel is that the video is not up to par, so if video is your thing, you should take that into consideration.
slimphotog I have been using Pentax cameras for about 20 years now. I upgraded to a K-S2 about a month ago from a K-X and I absolutely love it. I dare say it can easily handle anything I want to do with it. One thing that wasn't mentioned is the Ricoh(Pentax) app for iOS at least, allows you to use your phone as a live view remote with point to focus touch screen ability when the camera is set up for single shot mode. It also allows control over Tv, Av, exposure, and ISO setting through the app. It's still not perfect, but it's getting there. If you have not made your decision yet I hope I've been of some help.
weather sealing is quite a big deal for some users. 70D and KS-2 are the only WS bodies here but the Pentax also comes with a WS compact kit lens. Just a damn shame the KS-2 doesn't have a touchscreen or it would be a no-contest.
I just bought the Canon T6i, and I love it! I guess I would consider myself a “serious beginner”, although I’ve shot film for years. I’m excited about stepping into the DSLR world, and I appreciate you guys and your passion.
I just got the Buying Guide (totally worth it!). The recommendation to buy used makes older videos like this one all the more valuable. And now the D5500 is my gold standard for all camera comparisons, since I'm not in the market for 'pro'' cameras. 70D and KS-2 also, of course, on that radar, so even this 3-year-old video is great to have. Thanks.
Yet another great video from Tony and Chelsea. Keep doing what you are doing guys, very in-depth, detailed and I love the practicality of your experiments. The amount of work that goes into your videos is amazing, shoutout to the cast behind the scenes as well. - Irfaan
One thing that wasn't mentioned which may be due to when this video was made is the Ricoh(Pentax) app allows you to use your phone as a live view remote with point to focus touch screen ability when the camera is set up for single shot mode. It also allows control over Tv, Av, exposure, and ISO setting through the app. Also now if you are shooting jpeg it does allow you to share straight to Facebook from inside the app at least with iOS.
Thank you for reviewing the Pentax. I'm glad Pentax has seemingly improved their autofocus. That has always been their achilles heal IMHO. I used Pentax for a couple of decades. One of the reasons I gave up on them was their poor autofocus performance. I have been thinking of pairing the K S2 with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 for the reason you mentioned (great minds…) Hope this means you will do follow up reviews for the announced K3 mkII and the full frame body that is supposed to be released later this year. DPReview tends to ignore Pentax, or at least puts them on the back burner.
Unfortunately, from what I've heard, the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 has some focusing problems on Pentax cameras. I don't know if it's been fixed with a firmware update or something, but there's probably a thread about it on Pentax Forums. Actually, bad focus with third party lenses is part of the reason I moved from Pentax to Sony E. I tried a couple of Sigma 17-50s, and they all focused erratically. No such problems with my a6000 (so far).
StraightOuttaJarhois Actually I moved from Pentax to the a6000 for the same reason. The autofocus let me down more times I can count. What lens would you recommend for the e-mount? Thanks
Felipe Sandoval I have the Sony 50mm 1.8 and the Sigma DN 30mm and 19mm. They're all great, the Sigmas especially are amazing bang for the buck, but the Sony is my favorite.
Hi Both. Interesting and informative as always. I hope this helps explain the "surprising" result when you ran your first poll. Tony said something like "Who knew there were so many Pentax shooters out there?" Pentax cameras - historically weaker in some areas such autofocus & flash sinc speed but they are catching up now. Overall they continue to offer so much much more bang for your buck than the competition. Maybe you would now consider a review of the upcoming flagship K3 II when its released. (I know you said that unfortunately they were a nightmare to deal with ref loaners for review - which is also frustrating for us Pentax shooters to hear)
Tony Northrup and Chelsea, I love your videos! Always waiting for the newest videos to be posted but...theres no "but." :) LOL I see so many comments building you guys up to slap you down. Not the case, all love here. I own a Canon body, but watch ALL the videos bc I want to learn it all to capture a great moment. Thanks for your dedication and openness to the brands and for not being afraid to say when something is just downright disappointing. I can't afford to be a brand jokey and you guys are the ones I turn to when I need to make decisions about new gear, so thanks again. Be well!
What people forget about the 750D / 760D is the 3X digital video zoom. It is lossless, it makes a 250mm telephoto x 1.6 x 3 into a 24X optical zoom. It's 3 times more magnification than regular binoculars.
Adriana K. I also am seeing if there will be an 100D with the 750/760D sensor. There are rumors of a new 100D, even slightly more compact. Would be rather amazing.
Hi tony, Nikon WMU app, will lunch automatically on your phone as soon as you are connected to cameras WiFi, and it supports direct sharing from the app.
Nice review Tony & Chelsea, Great you have included Pentax camera this time! I've noticed that you recommend Sony A-6000 as a travel camera choice. I was thinking more of Samsung NX-500 or Pentax-K-S2 vs Sony-A-6000 as they are all priced nearly the same here in Europe and can't really decide between them..
Hey Tony, I recently purchased a Nikon D5500. It came with the 18-55mm kit lens as well as a Tamron 70-300mm lens. I am currently in a photography class and my greatest interest is shooting wildlife. i.e. I live in Utah and we have a lot of mule deer and elk to shoot (if you know where to go). I was just wondering if I made the right decision to buy the D5500 since in this video you say the Canons shoot the best wildlife?
8 years later its 2023 and I just bought a used T6i and feel good about it. I realize that it has some shortcomings and such, but my much newer 250D/SL3 is having difficulty focusing consistently. I am a bridge camera guy and don't really care about DSLR too much, and definitely don't need to have a lot of money tied up in one, when my bridge cameras are much more versatile. Oh, and Phone Cameras have pretty much taken over many photographic roles.
With my 70D, after you set all the Wi-Fi up, you can go into the camera settings and press "connect" and then go to your smartphone's wi-fi settings and it will auto-connect. It still is a pain and a smartphone SD reader would be easier to use. I bought the USB 3 SD Card readerr you recommended and it works great! Thanks!
Great match up review Tony! I'm a pentax shooter myself and Pentax has always been behind in Auto Focus & video and even the K3 is still playing catch up. Pentax you get bang for your bucks except in those 2 areas. I love canon video and yes it's leap above! Recently also play with my friend brand new D5500, amazing light camera, that grip is insanely awesome too.
I've been really happy with how my Sony a6000 and QX10 share photos with my phone. I have no desire for the camera to share directly to my social media accounts. With the Sony a6000 I just preview the image on the camera and touch my Xperia phone (or any modern android phone with NFC) to the NFC antenna of the camera and the image is automatically saved in my gallery. From there it can be shared. My Canon 550D has a transcend Wi-Fi card which is almost as easy to use as the Sony but requires connecting to the card so you'll momentarily disconnect from your mobile data. Either way it's not a big deal that it takes an extra minute or so to share online.
It sounds like you favor Nikon. Just based on your comment in the beginning " .. if it can finally hang with the Nikon sensors." I'll make a guess that your personal camera is a Nikon? Nice review though. Between the T6s and 70d I did notice that the T6s did reveal ever so slightly image quality in studio test shots. The 70d is also more expensive. I chose the T6s with the 18-135mm and I am very happy with it.
I'm glad you are looking into the wifi issue. I agree that this is one way to make cameras more useful. Right now its a pain. Not the least because I need to attach a separate wifi device to my D600.
Hey there Tony. Nice review(s). The Canon T6s has exposure comp but it is hidden. Half push the shutter button and turn the rear wheel. Not sure about the T6i. Don't worry, I missed it too and learned about it by getting corrected in my Amazon review (so I get to pass the love along, haha). I also prefer a full on button and was confused about the two buttons (T6s) that do the same thing. Rear top right - AF point selection and top panel left button is also an AF point selection. I wished one was exposure comp OR that Canon would let us customize it.
I can't agree with lack of a touch screen being a problem for K-S2. Touch screens evolved (in part) because there's no room on a phone for buttons and dials. And of course TS became an elegant interface method that graduated to pads, etc. Cameras have room for buttons and dials, and always have Photographers are used to that on a camera. The question should be simply whether the user interface is intuitive, not whether a camera has a particular interface that has come into use for other purposes. Pentax buttons, menus, and ergonomics are highly regarded among their users. Lack of a touch screen is a complaint only from those coming to Pentax expecting (merely) what they are accustomed to on other devices. Maybe you don't think that argues for NON-inclusion of a touch screen, but it likewise does not argue that a touch screen is really needed on top of the elegant system Pentax has long used. The double negative phrase "I can't NOT recommend the K-S2" is somewhat telling, indicating what I often see in reviews that belatedly turn to examine a Pentax. It's as if they are front-loaded to think Pentax is deficient in some regard relative to other makers. Pentax cams in fact stack up very nicely against other cams in the same class. I actually understand the surprise when reviewers find out they don't need to reflexively pan the Pentax.
Mark Lindamood We predicted someone would complain about our requesting a touch screen, so thanks for making that come true :). I'm going out on a limb and guessing you own a Pentax. This is our first Pentax, and we raved about it, but for some reason, we've gotten a bunch of negative comments from Pentax owners. We loved it! It's not perfect for everyone (none of the cameras were), but it's damn good and, in fact, it's the very best at some things. Don't over analyze my double-negative. We recorded that live, without editing. It's not like I'm reading from a teleprompter. I verbally stumbled and just kept going through the sentence so we wouldn't have to edit it.
Tony Northrup As a Pentax owner I was actually rather pleased with your review. The brand is in need of so,e recognition for the many things they get right, and yes, some flak for the things they get wrong. I certainly hope to you get to review the K3 II as well at some point.
Tony Northrup -- Not agreeing with the TS point is not a complaint, actually, it's just another point of view. You did a fine job of reviewing the K-S2. Several Pentax cams have indeed been the very best at some things, as you say.
Thanks for the Social Sharing Ratings. And appreciate the criteria for the ratings. I think when enough people begin sharing how this is important to them these types of features will be put in! Even though most would want to edit before sharing the ability to pull a pic or two from some shots and share right away can be very useful.
Focus points can be adjustet instantly via the touch screen (as an extra 'fn-bottom') This on the nikon D5500 when using viewfinder....a huge plus. The wife must love this feature. plus D5500 can write fast to a fast SD card...meaning that its in real life can shoot 10-14 raw images, because the buffer clears fast with a fast Sd card...so its feels like having 10-14 raw picture buffer on D5500....
The K-S2 has IBIS, no AA filter, front and rear control wheels, weather-sealing (including the kit lens), 100% view pentaprism OVF. Those last three features are not even mentioned in the review.
Dan Bonhomme We discussed the dual wheels. We never noticed any difference in the viewfinders (it's 95% or 98% vs 100%) so we didn't consider it to be a factor that would change anyone's mind. The weather-sealing is impossible for us to validate with testing, and we don't simply repeat manufacturer's marketing claims. Valid points; just wanted to explain our review process. If there was one winner in this, though, it was the Pentax.
Tony Northrup Pentax also has the DA* 300 mm f4 for ~1000 USD used. I've seen it as low as $750 on the pentax forums marketplace. There's also the 1.4x TC. Both are weather sealed. Just FYI.
Tony Northrup Thanks for the clarification Tony. I hadn't heard the dual wheels reference. That feature is a big deal to me. Please note that the 70D and K-S2 use a pentaprism VF, the others use a pentamirror, which is smaller and darker. I'm surprised you didn't notice.
I have been anxiously waiting for this video regarding the Canon T6s. Thanks for your concise and clear reviews. I am shooting an SL1 and have had pretty good success but want better image quality. Considering full frame at this point but will re-read your buyers guide. Thanks again.
The focussing in the 70d is much better than the 750d (t6i) but my 700d (with the same focussing system as the t6i) had everything pin-sharp for a fun-run I filmed on a shoulder mount where there was never a situation where someone was coming directly at me - for that we had someone with a focus puller. It will do fine for most things, but if you are stretching the system then get the better camera. Basically none of the cameras have bad focussing systems in video.
I think samsung and sony will always be ahead regarding wifi connectivity. I can already see a future camera from these manufacturers , that will allow to upload pictures , to instagram and flickr straight from the camera, if this feature comes first from another manufacturer it will be a real surprise imo.
Tony, thanks for the video review - very comprehensive. What would you recommend for a serious beginner between the Pentax K-S2 and Panasonic G7 (80/20 still/video). Thanks.
Well done. Tony's categories are good ones to distinguish among different user needs. Might I suggest a similar multi-camera review for mid-range mirrorless?
Al the way from the Netherlands love your video's. I have learned so much as a beginner. Keep up the good work. My first camera is the Canon eos 750d aka Rebel T6i. Love this one and i'm learning fast. Keep up the great work...
"Exposure Compensation" This is a new one since my film days. Isn't it the same as bracketing? Something I always did when I had 36 exposures, and that's it.
Just pull out the silly SD card and put it in your laptop and share your photo. I don't see what the big deal is. WAH!!!! "I want my camera to be a smart phone" Man we are spoiled.
I Can always count on Tony to help me decided on a Camera. All other reviewers are okay, but definitely not as thorough, knowledgeable or accurate as Tony. Also I have been trying to decide on a Camera for two years now and still can't lmao.
My mom passed away recently and we want to get my Dad a camera so he can get back into his old favorite hobby so that he will have something to do. He still has his Canon AE-1. I'm tossed up between the D5500, T6i, K-S2 for my Dad. He is an older guy and I am wondering if the heavy menu nature of the D5500 might be to much for him vs the physical buttons of the T6i & K-S2. I do like the image quality and focusing system of the D5500 and he may get serious again about photography. Any suggestion of which will be best for him?
+kamenwaticlients Ks2 is on the smaller and lighter side. Its also weather resistant. I have have had my Pentax k3 (With a Weather Resistant lens) out in Rainstorms to near Blizzards. I was a Nikon user and switched to Pentax and never looked back. The Pentax interface is also very intuitive, easy to get around and use. Highly Recommend Pentax..
re cannon being the only one with an entry level price wildlife lens. the pentax has the da* 300 f4 and the 1.4 TC which can all be got for a little more than the cannon 400 f5.6. so you get a 300 f4 and a 420 f5.6, both with excellent image quality. the only thing its missing is the focus limiter.
Hi Tony, I opine in the settings for the Pentax K-S2 there is an option to remain focussed on the target so the camera will only work when in focus. Perhaps an advancing target is different?
Quick question: I've checked out many reviews of the new canons, and yours is the only one to say that there is a difference in video autofocus between the t6i and t6s. Most just point to the AF servo for live mode stills in the T6s as an advantage over t6s, but no one says that means the video focus performance is necessarily better. Can you clarify? P.s. Just got your book for father's day and am excited to dive in!
I heard about 70d having a problem focusing via viewfinder using the center focus point when using lenses at f1.8 or wider... Do you have that same problem with yours or not? I am not sure if all Canon 70d bodies have that or just some of them...
According to your classification, I am a "Serious Beginner" and I use the T6i. Who buys a DSLR to use in its AUTO MODE? They should use a point and shoot camera...
Dev Watton Pentax bodies are usually weather sealed and the S2 in no exception, but the lens also needs to be weather sealed and unfortunately many of the Pentax lenses are not. Some of the most desirable lenses such as the "Limited" primes are not weather sealed which is kind of frustrating.
***** True, but the kit lens on the KS-2 is weather sealed, so is the 18-135 if you want to upgrade to that. The Canon's kit lens is not and that combo costs twice as much. Tony put this in the serious beginner class and he is right. It is a no brainer.
Pentax got 3 things they need to fix: 1) autofocus (semi address in recent camera) -- but compare to something like D5500, still very lacking. 2) video. Come on pentax... Do a freaking firmware upgrade and give us some features 3) marketing : this one is dead and probably not fixable -- I'm ok with this one :D
appreciate the straight forward honesty was thinking bout the 6s but im not sure if 9Focus Points is enough. you did say it had a decent performance and depth from what I can see it showed up pretty well against the 5500 to my eye. but im a novice lol
Hi +Tony & Chelsea Northrup your videos are amazing. I m confused between Nikon D5500 and Canon 760D/T6s. Following things are very much important to me 1. I need a better image quality 2. better manual control 3. better autofocus 4. better usability 5. Does the image quality matter for real life comparison. I normally shoot Landscape, astrophotography, kids, candid, sports and portrait. It will be great if i get any help in this. Thanks.
get the 760d for better autofocus(video) while the nikon is known for it's image quality. Or just get a cheap/used nikon/canon and get some good glass.
So with the canon t6i/s and Nikon d5500 if you were at the beach you could take a picture and have it on your phone and on social media within 5-10 minutes. If you can get it to your phone then you can do whatever you want right? Send it to someone, post it ect.?
Great review. I like how you focused on such things as a touch screens and, in particular, wifi. I simply wouldnt buy a camera these days without wifi built in. I primarily use wifi to download images to my ipad for review so speed (it differs) and robustness of the wifi signal also matter. But camera manufacturers have a long way to go in these areas. It would be nice to see a complete cross camera wifi review.
would you recommend D5500 or 70D for Protrait, buildings, skylines, landscaping, better in low lights. was leaning towards the D5500 but the problem was the live view doesn't give us what we see when we change the exposure which is annoying so we won't know how it will turn out until we take the photo
Tony, I couldn't help notice the start on Chelsea's face when you said mentioned the casual photographer category, and said like your " like your mom" :)
Thanks for the test. One of my favourite functions of the D5500 is the ability to use the touchscreen to pick AF point while using the viewfinder; I believe the Lumix range can do the same. Can the T6* series do this too?
I love the comparison you guys did between the WiFi capabilities of the cameras. It seems to be where a lot of camera manufacturers are headed with their cameras. I was curious if you did any comparisons with these cameras to the Sony Alpha cameras? I've seen other camera reviewers talk about how they love the WiFi on the Sony Alpha cameras.
Tony Northrup I have been interested in the Sigma 18-35 mm F1.8 for my Pentax K-30, but i've read quite a bit about that lens having auto focus issues on Pentax. Any chance you could investigate that, since you did recommend that lens for the Pentax?
+mrN3w7 True, the challenge for us as reviewers is that we can't simply take the manufacturer's word for the weather resistance, and we don't have a good way to test it. I'll also add that we've had weather-resistant cameras (5Ds) ruined in the same rainstorm that non-resistant GH4s survived.
+Tony Northrup Just for a simple average day test, I was somehow talked into shooting an event in the ugliest rainiest weather. My only weather resistant lens were a kit telezoom 50-200mm WR and my K-3 took it like it was nothing. Did the shoot through the day, no damage, no sign of water in the system, no fogging. This is what I call a real test and I am genuinely surprised bigger company cameras like the Canon don't do a good enough job in design. All it takes is a few O-rings, X-rings and gaskets to properly seal a camera, just like Pentax does even with its beginner DSLRs. Keeping a camera working in rain/dust and making sure it survives to shoot another day is the most important feature. The fancy electronics can only come second. With that said after my rain shoot I quickly put my gear into the dry-box for a few days, just to be sure.
+mrN3w7 Pentax is better than Canon & Nikon in almost all ways, except in Touch & no of AF points. The number of Advanced features makes it compete with D7200 & 70D. Image quality is one aspect where there are some questions, while from the DPreview comparison tool, it fare better than T6s & is much closer to D5500 in terma of noise performance, Dynamic range varies throughout the range (from K-S1 readings in DXOmark), & @tonynorthup said that K-S2's dynamic range isnt as good as T6s (& I dont like T6s especially because of this, I like it when it's near D5500, gives a lot of Post processing latitude). the DXOmark tests arent yet out for K-S2.
+anu l Oh I know about Pentax quality. I've been using them for quite some time now (along other brands) and I am always pleased with the IQ, lens and body quality overall. I've even posted a link towards a few videos on RUclips that shows the weatherproofing tests others have done, but Tony removed that comment with the links (afraid I am stealing his thunder or something!? That's why I personally unsubscribed from their channel. Removing comments from your subscribers is not really cool... )... anyway, good times for Pentax, especially with the FF coming this spring.
+mrN3w7 Nikon sensors in d5500 and d7200 give excellent low noise results upto 3.5 to 4 stops. how does that compare with Pentax?. i hope it comes near to Nikon's performance. dot think it will beat Nikon though
I'm a pro in Melbourne Australia. I have a 70D which I got for video. I love the touch screen, which I didn't think that I would. I specially love it in video, but I find that i am using for other things as well. I agree wifi is crap. I started using the 70D to have as a walk around, but its to heavy. I'm buying the new Sony A6XXX when it comes out. I have a RX100 which is great, but its an original so no WiFi. Thanks, Mark
MrKdr500 Hi, thx for the reply. Well i was hoping that Canon would have given a A6000 competitor, as every thing I have is Canon. the M3 doesn't have a viewfinder does it? i'll have a look at the M3 on your recommendation. Although, sony is about to bring out an A7000 or something like that. What was the reason you didn't like the A6000?
on wifi less canons that only have CF I use a CF to SD adaptor so on my old 7D I can use a eye-fi mobi card. Jpegs automatically transfer to the phone. I think 1 of the reasons camera sales are on the decline is there are to many models to choose from. 70d 750d 760d t6i t6s etc..........
tony, when can we plan on seing any new content on the D810? Maybe a review of the 5ds vs 5dsr vd d810. i would love to see an accessories video for the d810. anyways, thanks for all the content and come to beautiful bend, oregon!
Ryan Murray We do have this, with lens/flash/tripod suggestions (check the description): ruclips.net/video/UGD8mJOmzUU/видео.html. We're filming a 5D3 vs 5DSR vs D810 video today through Wednesday, so you should see that in a week or two. and thanks!
Your production quality has really picked up, great job, very informative and entertaining. One wish would be if you took mirrorless a bit more seriously, not just for travel and video.
Albert Amseldrossler Thanks! Re: mirrorless, that's more in the hands of mirrorless manufacturers than us. When they work better for sports, portraits, and wildlife, we'll happily switch over. BTW, did you see the D7200 review? The NX-1 rocked it, and continues to rock it, for sports.
Thanks for your explanations of just about everything... But, I use 5D's for video ... and since HD is so "small" what difference does Canon's 21k sensor or Nikon's 36k sensor make in the actual video? I cannot "see" a difference except in what lens used? Please give us your well educated thoughts.
Terry Thomas Hi, Terry. The megapixels don't improve sharpness with HD video. We use the 12 megapixel a7S for most of our videos now, and video looks much better than higher megapixel cameras.
Looks to me like the d5500 got trashed? Im wondering because im about to buy a camera in that price range, this will be my first camera to buy ever. Before this video, i thought that in general, the d5500 would be superior because of its ergonomics and better IQ. Or are you guys simply outruling it, because it doesn't have a dedicated button for exposure compensation?
I plan on purchasing either the D5500 or the T6S for mostly video. I have a video camera I use but want to be able to get a more cinematic look with blurred backgrounds and rack focus. In any case, since I do this purely for fun, I don't want to spend a fortune on a full sensor camera. My question is more about lenses. If I want a 50mm look and I am using a crop sensor with a 1.5 crop factor, would I purchase a 50mm or a 35mm. When I apply the crop factor the the 35mm I get a 50mm. Is this correct or am I missing something. Thanks
Hey tony im planning to pick up a bew dslr, ehich do you suggest among these nikon d5300, 760d, 70d, d7100. Im planning to buy the tamron 17-50, 35, 50, tokina 11-16. But if i have to buy the 70d/d7100 i have to skip the 11-16 for now to keep it withon budget. So 70d/d7100 minus the 11-16 for now, or d5300 and all the lenses? Im a serious hobbyist, even though i havent been shooting for quite a long time i have read a lot about both technical and artistic aspect of photography. Please suggest whoch camera to buy.
Cant you set the touchscreen on the D5500 to adjust Exposure level? From what I understand the touchscreen acts as an extra button that can be adjusted to whatever when using the optical viewfinder Also the D5500 dont have AA filter either
I opine I am a bit confused as to how the photos were taken. I took a photo of a lighthouse from near a cliff edge where I could only fit a tripod but not me. I had focussed the distance from a nearby position where I could use my K-S2. I used the app to remotely take the shot. The photo registered on the cameras SD card and the Android tablet 7" PC. Where I took the photo there was no wifi signal apart from camera to PC. I wonder if network/ISP connection or lack of it, might be anothef variable in the test?
I find it quite frustrating that higher end cameras often don't have touchscreens. In general, the UIs of modern DSLRs seem clunky and unintuitive, at least on Nikon's and Canon's end.
15:22 review suddenly becomes massively patronising. As a serious amateur photographer who taught myself how to use all of the functions and modes on a 450D back in 2008, I find your comments about the Canon 750D (T6i) ridiculous, for people on a lower budget who are still serious there is nothing wrong with the camera. Yes I would have preferred to have a 70D but at double the price......I'm happy with the T6i
Interesting. I find U$ 850,00 for a rebel camera overprice, but it doesnt look like a Rebel series camera. I need an upgrade for my T3i and want to get serious in sports photography, but also want a good sensor for IQ and U$ 600 for an used 7D looks like wiser. Im not sure as well why canon has the T6i and T6s, thats kinda confusing. Also, looks like its a 50mm 1.4, not 1.8 or am I wrong?

Please show us more Pentax!
Thank you both!
I can´t imagine what kind of work you are putting into this. What at gift to all of us youtube watchers!
As a "serious beginner " with a Pentax k50 for over a year. I like that you are looking at Pentax now!
Ditto. Love my K-50, and the K-S2 seems like its cousin. I'm considering the K-S2 for the articulating screen and wifi.
slimphotog I have been using Pentax cameras for about 20 years now.
The photos of Pentax K-S2 are just amazing!
Thanks.
Finally! A Pentax review. I would love to see you take on the K-3. I plan on upgrading to the K-3 from my old K-10D soon.
The pentax k-3ii is the camera I am waiting for you guys to review.
I have been thinking of pairing the K S2 with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 for the reason you mentioned (great minds…)
Hope this means you will do follow up reviews for the announced K3 mkII and the full frame body that is supposed to be released later this year.
Thanks
daphne9124 Maybe instead of taking a big plunge with the Sigma, go with the Pentax 50mm f/1.8 first and see how you feel about Pentax.
Be well!
Erin Payton Thanks, Erin!!
Nice to see you reviewing Pentax.
Nice review Tony & Chelsea, Great you have included Pentax camera
this time!
I've noticed that you recommend Sony A-6000 as a travel camera choice.
I was thinking more of Samsung NX-500 or Pentax-K-S2 vs Sony-A-6000 as
they are all priced nearly the same here in Europe and can't really
decide between them..
This is the best RUclips review I have ever seen! You guys rock. Thank you!
I still own the Nikon D5500 till this day and it's great for Manuel filming as it has flat profile and Neutral profile for colour gradeing
if you like the pentax k-s2 you should try the new pentax k3II. it is more high end camera....
On the D5500 you can select AF point by touch, while looking through the OVF.
A Pentax review? AT LONG LAST! Now we just need a Sony SLT review hehe.
They have set review
Nikon D5500 is great for street photography and casual photography
***** You are correct. I was actually thinking mainly of mode dials and toggles, and shouldn't have confused the point with "buttons."
I love watching your videos. In depth analysis.
Pentax baby! That's where it's at! If y'all keep the Pentax, check out the da20-40mm wr and the fa limiteds!
Your production quality is insane, just perfect - 4K is too much for my old crappy monitor - I need new one...
Have a nice day.
Oh great, that's confirmation of what I thought it was ! My T2i on iso 100 I was still able to see noise on the pictures.
Hi Tony, I opine in the settings for the Pentax K-S2 there is an option to remain focussed on the target so the camera will only work when in focus. Perhaps an advancing target is different?
What's good with wildlife?
I also do casual and street photos.
"Nobody does that!"
Glad somebody said it. Let's hope the people at Nikon and Canon are listening.
Should I buy 70d, or wait for a new camera?
really useful tests and camera models, thanks guys!
Why didn't you mention that you can change the focus point by moving your finger over the touchscreen on the D5500?
Excellent comparison as usual. Thanks.
According to your classification, I am a "Serious Beginner" and I use the T6i. Who buys a DSLR to use in its AUTO MODE? They should use a point and shoot camera...
Exactly
So... you don't recommend the T6s for anything other than video? That's a bit strange...
Pentax is weather sealed also.
Dev Watton
Pentax bodies are usually weather sealed and the S2 in no exception, but the lens also needs to be weather sealed and unfortunately many of the Pentax lenses are not. Some of the most desirable lenses such as the "Limited" primes are not weather sealed which is kind of frustrating.
daphne9124 The kit lens that comes with this is weather sealed and Pentax has nearly 20 other lenses that are weather sealed.
Dev Watton Yep check the camera store review of it. He throw it in the mudd and flap it all around =D
Do a freaking firmware upgrade and give us some features 3) marketing : this one is dead and probably not fixable -- I'm ok with this one :D
appreciate the straight forward honesty
was thinking bout the 6s
but im not sure if 9Focus Points is enough. you did say it had a decent performance and depth from what I can see it showed up pretty well against the 5500 to my eye. but im a novice lol
Excellent review! Very fair and impartial. Thanks
Hi +Tony & Chelsea Northrup your videos are amazing. I m confused between Nikon D5500 and Canon 760D/T6s. Following things are very much important to me
1. I need a better image quality
2. better manual control
3. better autofocus
4. better usability
5.
Tienlinhho there are ways around that though
Tony, I couldn't help notice the start on Chelsea's face when you said mentioned the casual photographer category, and said like your " like your mom" :)
Thanks for the test. One of my favourite functions of the D5500 is the ability to use the touchscreen to pick AF point while using the viewfinder; I believe the Lumix range can do the same. Can the T6* series do this too?
Martin Francis No, and it's too bad, too, because changing focusing points is a pain.
I love the comparison you guys did between the WiFi capabilities of the cameras. It seems to be where a lot of camera manufacturers are headed with their cameras. I was curious if you did any comparisons with these cameras to the Sony Alpha cameras? I've seen other camera reviewers talk about how they love the WiFi on the Sony Alpha cameras.
mbkongalor We haven't compared the Sony SLT cameras, but I believe they have the same Wi-Fi system.
Wait, you guys are also in CT!? I was at Harkness just the other day. Small world.
Love your videos.
Can you review the pentax k-3 or maybe the k-3 II ?
Viperx66 Maybe! It depends on how much time we have.
Tony Northrup I have been interested in the Sigma 18-35 mm F1.8 for my Pentax K-30, but i've read quite a bit about that lens having auto focus issues on Pentax. Any chance you could investigate that, since you did recommend that lens for the Pentax?
canon eos 760d or canon eos 70d
which is the best cam
Great show ! Thank you so much ! very informative.
17:14 Another point for Pentax... is weather resistant ... one of the most important feature!!! :)
Thanks,
Mark
MrKdr500 Hi, thx for the reply. Well i was hoping that Canon would have given a A6000 competitor, as every thing I have is Canon. the M3 doesn't have a viewfinder does it? i'll have a look at the M3 on your recommendation. Although, sony is about to bring out an A7000 or something like that. What was the reason you didn't like the A6000?
in pentax you only have to do a long press in the foto to share.
on wifi less canons that only have CF I use a CF to SD adaptor so on my old 7D I can use a eye-fi mobi card.
And THAT Is why pro sports photogs shoot center point and crop...so you're not futsing with the directional pad trying to pick an af point...
For Video is 70d better or Sony a6000?
Still happy with my T3i, it does the job. Waits for Canon 4k camera under $1000. Maybe in 2026? Lol. That new GH looks nice.
2020
Thumbs up for the frustrated face dude. LOL

Love your videos, you are doing great job!
Thanks
Although it takes several steps, if done efficiently, the Nikon wifi transfer works swimmingly.
Another stellar vid guys thanks!
From what I understand the touchscreen acts as an extra button that can be adjusted to whatever when using the optical viewfinder
Also the D5500 dont have AA filter either
