Unfortunately, there are a few rather nasty comments about the K-S2 below. I would like to remind everyone that this is a camera that has excellent imaging and a lot of features--and it currently goes for $518 WITH the 18-50mm weather-resistant kit lens on Amazon. I don't think you're going to find another DSLR-lens combo that gives you what this one does for that kind of money. So c'mon. Give it a break If you want great stills and you're on a tight budget, I think this rig is a winner. Then you can save-up for a better lens or two and have a great system. Not everyone can afford a Sony A7R II, ya know.
Just ordered a KS-2 myself and it's funny because while Chris shouldn't have done the weather sealing 'stress test" that he did, it actually just ended up showing how well sealed it is anyway! I expect to use mine in super humid SE Asia soon, so WR was a must.
Nice video, Thanks. About video quality you are little bit wrong. If you need 1080p/60fps, you have too big bitrate and must use strong compression - loosing colors. Pentax don't compressing so strong, so bitrate of video 1080p/30fps is same, like a 1080p/60fps on Sony, Canon, Nikon. And colors of Pentax is MUCH BETTER. Pentax always say - Quality is more important than speed.
+Gedas St While Pentax video has nice colours, it's very soft and has tons of motion compression issues. We do all out testing at 24 & 30P, and have found Pentax video pretty sub-par. Even looking at Pentax compared to other cameras with similar data rates, the Pentax has inferior image quality to Sony, Panasonic, Canon Nikon and Samsung. Only Fuji is historically worse. Don't get me wrong, I love Pentax cameras, but they have a lot of work to do to catch up on the video side. Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV Interesting. I'm still using K-5 and K-7 with AVI format. Maybe new Pentax cameras with H.264 format has new troubles. I'll test it. Yes - with functionality and frame rate video's of Pentax is low :) But when working with own camera, and especially - with manual focus lenses, it's not a problem. For many years in photoclubs I have possibility to try any DSLR of any brand. Two months ago i repaired 50mmf0.95 lens for ILCE-7. It's subjective - but I don't like Canon, and especially - Sony colors :)
I am really torn between this and the D5500. Looking to shoot with the Sigma 17-50 2.8 and 30 1.4 Art. One huge thing he seemed to miss was the IBIS! Huge for so many kinds of photography. I'm really not feeling the extra weight... truthfully I would probably prefer if this WEREN'T weather sealed to save some grams. But aside from that, if it has the lenses you need this is a solid package. Shame what they did to the K-S1.... should have been a non-weathersealed K-S2. Pentax has a knack for shooting for the moon and missing catastrophically (remember the K-01? Lol). But when they get things right they are on the money. Just wish this thing was lighter.
I've gotta come down on the negative side of the argument regarding the grading in this video, sorry! Some of the wide shots look like you had a weird white vignette on it?
Love the camera work on this video. Nice to see some longer shots being used. Long lenses are not taken advantage of as much as I think they should be for video.
That was seriously brutal!! Holy F*! That limited surely deserves slightly better treatment ;) Thank you for being such promoters of Pentax. Its a dirty job, but someone has to do it. I guess us Pentaxians can forgive you for hating the KS-1 so much. This camera certainly fixes everything wrong with that camera IMO.
Nice review, beautiful video which was interesting to watch but between this and Lori Grunin's very negative review on Cnet's channel I am left confused about buying this camera.
Thanks fellas for reviewing the K-S2. I was interested in where things were going with the new line and you have done a fine job. I'll wait and see how good the FF is before considering a replacement for my K-5II though. Great video review...as always =)
Got to say I found it hard to focus on the review as I kept wondering about how terribly flat and drab the A7S footage looked. It somehow reminded me of the 70's. I commend the guys for trying to work outside the square and use new technologies as they come to hand, but in this instance it was detrimental to the review.
Nice work. Some of the dof was nuts and the final stabiliser shot...mwah! The dirt on the lens was a bit of a bugger, but stuff happens! Nice images from the Pentax too
And at a price of between 800-900 dollars U.S. or CA.D. not a bad deal for the price if you need a decently performing *weather-sealed* DSLR and lens combo.
Jari Perho As one of those who "complained" about video quality, let me ask you this. If majority of comments are about production quality of this video and not about Pentax K-S2, do you think this video achieved its intended goal? P.S. Please enable Reply function on your profile if you want to discuss this further
ObelixCMM Thanks for the tip on the reply settings. I'm not really a fan of how G+'s and youtube's settings are all over the place... Your question is actually pretty interesting, because that means people didn't watch this video to find out new information about the Pentax camera. They came here for entertainment and I bet the TheCameraStoreTV guys are puzzled too, because they produce these videos only to advertise their store and products. It's a bit of a dilemma. I'm here mostly for the content and don't really care how people go about creating it. When RUclips incorporates broadcast standards, requires color bars, clocks, timecodes, R128 audio loudness and other engineering guidelines, I guess that's when we ought to focus on the technical delivery as well?
I can't speak for everybody else but I did watch this video for information on new Pentax camera first, and entertainment and production value are just extra benefits. Usually production quality is on much higher level, and it doesn't distract from information presented.
Good amount details in the review, thanks. Did you mention some live view things? I guess not :( And: Nobody would really shoot directly above water without a lens hood, guys. The drops onto the lens' front you will get are really a pain.
Great video as always guys, Just one thing: I see much more noise in the Pentax high iso shot, am I missing Something? Thank you and keep up the good work :-)
Nice review: I'd recomend this pentax for the building industry tecnicians who need something affordable, relatively small for on site site activities: in Architecture photograpy a 100% viewfinder is a big plus and the added weather sealing adds to the package in dirty and dusty environment. The new EM-5 MkII is as good but costs more and there is no cheap compact lens with weater sealing available. Do you hear me Olympus?!?
Why does this video look flat and like it has some lame Instagram filter on it? Are you using the LUT"s from that company you profiled a few months ago? This looks really unappealing. Pls revert to using the dedicated videocam with the look from months ago. This is, IMO, not an improvement.
+AndrewTGreen It looks 'ungraded'. This flat look is perfect to pass through color grading, as it will result in a consistent color tone. I think it was simply never color graded, and posted completely flat. I see that a lot, and I too find it totally unappealing.
The limiteds aren't weather sealed! It hurt a little when you dipped it in the mud. But great review, I really appreciate that you guys include pentaxes too!
Zoe Bazilchuk Don't worry Zoe, that was the 20-40 HD WR and it is very well sealed. But yah don't soak limiteds! They're too nice to ruin! Chris @ TCS TV
What is going on with the colour on this video? Dark in the middle, light at the edges. And vice versa. Over saturation, under saturation. Just plain funky.
I love your reviews, @Chris... VERY interested in knowing if the camera worked after the mud, splash and dunk test at 9:25 ? I'm 95% into buying a 77D, but this made my decision totter. I'm just an advanced enthusiast looking for something better (that the basics) to progress into food, travel and interiors.
ObelixCMM That's funny because I looked at your youtube channel and watched all 4 videos and couldn't figure out why you even bothered in the first place. edit. whoops you have more than 4. still. why not cut them some slack? they own a camera store and are not a real production team. i find chris's enthusiasm more entertaining than anything.
Zos Xavius Thanks for watching my videos, you probably doubled my views ;) Reason I commented as I did is because I was used to much higher standard of production from them, not because I think I'm better than they are. Did I mention Chris in my comment?
ObelixCMM Hah. To be fair I make some horribly boring videos myself, but hey...art...right? I didn't mean to be so harsh initially. Maybe a bit defensive if anything. I did like the time lapse with the moving roof. That was actually cool. No you didn't mention chris. I just mentioned Chris, because he's the real reason I watch these videos mainly. None of these 5 minute reviews are adequate to really review a camera, but these guys at least make it entertaining. I've seen the production values go all over the place with these videos. A lot of times they are trying out new cameras, so maybe something went wrong with their profile and grading went weird. Who knows? It seems like they shoot every video with a different camera.
It looks like a CPL filter was used in this video, it seems to not be able to fill the contrasty ND-like effect in the entire frame. Anyone else agree?
hi Chris, is the AF faster with a better lens than the 18-50WR? 3 things: front dial, weather sealing, 100% viewfinder. If you look for still photos,I think this stand out from the competition. If the AF is on par I would probably go for it.

First thanks for your reviews. I have a question for you. I'm a seaman and I need a dslr camera prepared against bad weather (rain, water splases, and so on). Is there any DSLR camera that suit that environment? K-3?, Nikon 7200 ?. I'm interested in APS-C cameras. Thanks in advance
Greetings :) Can you suggest which is good for all round purposes for street, portrait and wedding photography, I was thinking about canon 5d miii with 24-70 f2.8mm, 16-35mm f2.8, and 85mm f1.2, nikon d810 24-70mm, and 14-24mm f2.8 mm. I saw watching a review of 5dmiii it was mentioned that 5dmiii has good and fast accurate auto focus but lack in image quality it kinda made me even more confusion if a camera has good and fast auto focus but no image quality should it be worth buying it or would you recommend nikon d750 Thanks Simran
zeebazu Yeah, the new guy shot the video but Jordan edited the footage. I don't know if it's the lens, the in-camera settings, or the LUTS Jordan used for colour grading.
My best guess for the strange brightness non uniformity is usage of variable ND if that's what's bothering you. Color tone is a different topic altogether and is highly subjective. Both to the viewer and to the grader. I personally think the grading is fine.
mcrazza Levi shot and graded his episodes. I did the editing. His grades have a different look than mine, but I think it's cool to have a different aesthetic from time to time. I'll be back shooting next month. Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV For me it wasn't so much a different look as different looks, about 4 of them in 12 minutes video. Just to much for video that is not about editing and color grading.
Question. I'm a fly fisherman, kayak-er, hiker... all around outdoors freak. I want a camera that can take the outdoors abuse, but also be durable and if it was a mirrorless i'd be very happy. what should I get?
What kind of lenses do you need?..What focal lengths you like the most? Because;even while your camera is weather sealed, your lens has to be WR too...I love Pentax' build, but sadly when it is about auto focus,it sucks. If you can find a cheap used K5II or K30 with 18-55 WR lens, you would give it a try...IMO don't invest too much on Pentax system. On the other hand,Pentax 10-17 fisheye lens, you would love!..You can also find Tokina version of this lens (for Canon or Nikon).
I don't think anyone has an 18-300mm WR lens. Pentax makes 18-55mm and 55-300mm WR lens, though that's not quite as useful as one doesn't really want to change lenses out in the rain.
I don't think the K-S2 is the successor to the K-S1, as it is the successor to the K-50, just as the K-S1 succeeds the K-500. Btw, the K-500 also was not weathersealed. Neither were the K-r, K-x and K-m before that. But I do agree that the ergonomics of the K-S1 are not its strong point.
George Morley Only the one but considering the brutal wind that day I'm pleased! I hope that other guy caught some too but the wind drove him off the water pretty quickly. Besides the Bow river can be a challenging and cruel mistress. Chris @ TCS TV
Video wise the killer for me is the lack of real image stabilisation. Since the K-30 era (which this new K-S2 looks to share the same internals with, max shutter speed, fps rate, number of focus points etc) Pentax have introduced that STUPID 'Movie SR' which is software based stabilisation. This essentially warps the video to hell in a non correctable manner. Means you then have to turn off what should be a big point of difference :-( Sensor shift stabilisation used to be a Pentax strength along with weather sealing. Now you can get both of those in several other brands, and potentially more axis stabilisation also.
Richand Fleur Jackson I don't get the warping with their stabilization at all. Other manufacturers have done larger area sampling and used software for a steady cam effect without this awful warping going on. Their official line is that it causes noise in the video with mechanical SR, so that is why it is disabled. I imagined that the OMD and A7 II will pressure them into making it an option again. The bitrate in their codec is the bigger problem right now IMO.
Yeah the warping has honestly cost me footage. Think babies head warping like an alien or I'm on acid etc. really poor implementation of this. Agree the audible noise could be an issue but you've provided an external mic in now - at least give me the option. Sony have done this with a FF sensor. Olympus with excellent offerings also. Either sort it out or be bold and pull video altogether and call it a photography statement. Yes the bit rate is very poor too, not disagreeing there mate.
I hate that lock on the kit zoom. The new lens is a world better than the previous Pentax standard non-waterproof kit lens. It sucked. Like the weight on the K S-2, more so than my Nikon D7100 which is a moose. Nice review. 2/2018.
What the hell is going on with Chris? I mean it's like an alien snatched him up and replaced him with some strange copy. He doesn't know the difference between weather sealed and waterproof? How long has he sold cameras for now? Doesn't he own The Camera Store? I don't think there is one DSLR out on the market that is fully waterproof. Then to make it even weirder he sticks the K-S2 into the mud? Covers it in mud actually. Then he splashes water on to it and at one point even actually submerges it into the river. Invasion of the Body Snatchers…..? Chris, I hope the real you makes it back in time for the next episode. :)
nice video this is camera do 4k also if it doesn't work out this is to internal forecast long as you have the right SD card let me know interested in buying it thank you
Caost Depends on evf, not all are 100%. Though yeah the comment about what you see is what you get on a ovf is so wrong it doesn't even matter if you try and specify viewing angle in hindsight.
JohnReviewer112 Im loving it thanks. That was probably a good decision better to get the better camera really. The Ks2 was the best I could afford so im jealous of you sir :)
03:37 Sorry, Chris, but this is absolutely wrong: "What you see is what you get". No, the EVF shows you what you will get, the OVF does not show what your camera with the settings (white balance, styles like B/W, dynamic range of the sensor, etc.) will give you.
Russell hawker Well, directly before he talks about what makes a SLR unique to other cameras, the optical viewfinder. The 100% thing is talked AFTER that. So if he really meant it that way he really phrased it badly.
Lofote Hey Lofote. I could have been more clear about how I stated that and I even thought afterwards, "I hope that makes sense?" You make a good point too that modern EVFs actually give truer information in regards to colour and exposure, live histogram, and the rest. It's one of the main benefits of going to mirrorless. In all honestly the reason I said WYSIWYG is because I'm ancient from a time long past in photography when we sold film SLRs brand new in the store and the main selling point for the SLR over rangefinders was just that, WYSIWYG. If anything SLRs do give you a very accurate rendition of what you're gonna get in terms of perspective, focus, depth of field, and composition. Modern EVFs simply take it to an even higher level of information and for that we are thankful. Thanks for watching as always! Chris @ TCSTV
I would buy Pentax if I wasn't so married to the Canon system of lenses. Pentax also doesn't have newer lenses that will be compatible to their new full frame sensor coming out in the near future.
Unfortunately, there are a few rather nasty comments about the K-S2 below. I would like to remind everyone that this is a camera that has excellent imaging and a lot of features--and it currently goes for $518 WITH the 18-50mm weather-resistant kit lens on Amazon.

Cant believe it actually handled all that water and mud.
this camera is a beast. takes the weather, all types. that's why I bought it. love it
That last walk and talk was amazing! From both the perspectives of Chris's smooth rap, and the camera work -- AMAZING!
upping the artistic production is great, the grading not so, but you missed removing one HUGE dust spot there :)
The Color's in this video look fantastic!
Awkwardly Accented Vlogger I think it does, too! A lot of people aren't liking it, though.

Martin Francis Does look strange, parts of it look like selective color (red)
At 5:51 it looks like it's caused by a variable ND filter. Is this the sort of thing you were mentioning?
Martin Francis I think its the "X effect" of using variable ND filters on a wide angle lens! (at least at the very beginning of the video)
8:53 sure about "same" high iso performance? I see a lot more noise on the left image
mlsterlous sony 20mp sensor is too old.Even previous 16 mp (K-5/52/30/50/500, D7000 D5100, Nex5 etc) was much better at low ISO.
***** D7000 was Toshiba sensor. Not Sony.
K5 or K30 etc has same sensor. And its Sony. Toshiba sensor was on D7100/7200 abd 5200+
***** Yes, correct. I was a little too quick here..hehe
***** d7200 has a Sony sensor.
No mention of dual control wheels? That feature is unique to Pentax in this class.
IBIS should have been mentioned too.
Love the camera work on this video. Nice to see some longer shots being used. Long lenses are not taken advantage of as much as I think they should be for video.
I like how well Chris describes the K-S2's in-body Shake Reduction.

There is some kind of dirt(or something) on the A7S's sensor... Sorry for being such a cry baby about it,but I just couldn't look past it!

The KS-2 still worked great. Check out the newer K-70 as well if you're looking into inexpensive Pentax DSLRs.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Thanks a ton for the info and the tip, Jordan. Appreciate It. :-)
all perfect except for the 1080p 30fps only, no update to recod 60fps? :(
What's with the washed out colors ? Looks like review was shoot in S-log and not graded at all.
This video is not going to do any justice to Pentax K-S2.
Bad focusing, dirty lenses, strange colors and annotations are too distracting.

nice video dude. what brand name pants are those??????
Is the waterproof camera Pentax K-70 as Pentax K-S2?
Thank you very much for the verified information.

100% viewfinder.

Which dslr camera would you recommend for videos? Can you list a few?
Thanks.
Compare this to K-50 Does it worth to buy ks2 instead of k-50???
does ks2 survived the water and mud test after this video???????
Nasty Video Grading dude, btw Love the Pentax
Actually an optical viewfinder is the opposite of what you see is what you get because the sensor do not register what the eye registers.
F10, F14, why would go to such small apertures only to lose detail? :O
What the hell was Pentax thinking with the K-S1?
On 8:30 minute mark I was thought that my screen got a dirt.... But it's not... Its so realistic.... Which lens you pair with the A7s??
Greetings :)
Can you suggest which is good for all round purposes for
street, portrait and wedding photography, I was thinking about canon 5d
miii with 24-70 f2.8mm, 16-35mm f2.8, and 85mm f1.2, nikon d810 24-70mm,
and 14-24mm f2.8 mm. I saw watching a review of 5dmiii it was mentioned
that 5dmiii has good and fast accurate auto focus but lack in image quality
it kinda made me even more confusion if a camera has good and fast auto
focus but no image quality should it be worth buying it or would you
recommend nikon d750
Thanks
Simran
Camera is Water Resistante but what about the lenses???
Beautiful video colors
And you made me fancy the KS2.
:)
I love my K-S1.
You seem to prefer the K30 the rev on that camera you seem more positive about.
information: A+
Color grading: D-
What is the deal with the colour grading in the last few TCSTV videos?
mcrazza must be the new kid. could be wrong though
zeebazu Yeah, the new guy shot the video but Jordan edited the footage.
The 18-50 lock is not a pain in the ass. It is a pain in the NUTS...yeah feels cheesy but sharp as a tack.
which lenses were mounted on the camera? I wish pentax have a 18-300 wr lens i think would be the go to lens for many pentaxians.
I don't think anyone has an 18-300mm WR lens. Pentax makes 18-55mm and 55-300mm WR lens, though that's not quite as useful as one doesn't really want to change lenses out in the rain.
Hey you guys didn't mention it has a class leading -3ev AF capability!
also I'm not so sure the k-s2 replaces the k-s1 rather its like the d5500 to the d3300 type deal
Sensor dust/spot at 8:26 near the middle bottom edge of the frame :3
Annoying dust spot on your sensor on your Sony camera, was I the only one to get bothered with this? Great video though.
Did it work after the dip?
Jordan, you have a tiny dust on the right bottom of the sensor of your a7s.
mOnzkie_0519 Actually if dust is on the bottom right of the image, on sensor it is on the top left. Everything is inverted.
your right. thanks!
Love your videos!
What kind of grip are you using with the body ? I think is nice because it seems likes it´s just a lace shoe (but is not I guess 3:35 )
Carlo Molina Gordy's Wrist Strap www.thecamerastore.com/6939-Gordys-Wrist-Strap-Lug-Mount.aspx
It is hand made leather wrist strap
why take images of water at 1/500th for a sharpness test?
DSLRs also have a second advantage. The ergonomics are much better. I just hate small cameras.
Only the one trout? Or did that other bloke on the river catch it?
George Morley Only the one but considering the brutal wind that day I'm pleased! I hope that other guy caught some too but the wind drove him off the water pretty quickly. Besides the Bow river can be a challenging and cruel mistress.
Chris @ TCS TV
TheCameraStoreTV If you're ever in the UK, fish the Coquet in Northumberland, it's good for rainbow trout.
What lens was used on the a7s for that episode?
is this camera good for short films?
Video wise the killer for me is the lack of real image stabilisation.
Since the K-30 era (which this new K-S2 looks to share the same internals with, max shutter speed, fps rate, number of focus points etc) Pentax have introduced that STUPID 'Movie SR' which is software based stabilisation. This essentially warps the video to hell in a non correctable manner. Means you then have to turn off what should be a big point of difference :-(
Sensor shift stabilisation used to be a Pentax strength along with weather sealing.
how do I set the camera for use with Old manual focus "K" mount lenses?
Does this camera record video? Nevermind. It does.
nice video this is camera do 4k also if it doesn't work out this is to internal forecast long as you have the right SD card let me know interested in buying it thank you
with optical view finder what you see is not what you get
Caost I think he was talking about field of view, not exposure
ObelixCMM Yeah probably, but even with EVF you see the correct field of view. Or am I wrong?
Not sure on EVF's. I think most of them are 100% view on interchangeable lens cameras
Caost Depends on evf, not all are 100%. Though yeah the comment about what you see is what you get on a ovf is so wrong it doesn't even matter if you try and specify viewing angle in hindsight.
Didn't have much of a choice... If you listen to next sentence he is clearly talking about 100% full coverage viewfinder, and not exposure
What lense did you use in the Sony A7s?
There is a huge piece of dirt on the lens at the 2nd half of the video
certainly much better than the ks-1
I think the video is perfect! I like it a little bit flat.
How activate the GPS option?
what's the difference between weather sealed and water proof?
+Tecnovlog Water proof will let you go underwater, weather proof can't and can only withstand light(ish) rain and dust.
JohnReviewer112 I know now, I have a PENTAX KS2 :)
JohnReviewer112 Im loving it thanks. That was probably a good decision better to get the better camera really. The Ks2 was the best I could afford so im jealous of you sir :)
The only Reflex with mic input under 800/1000€. Canon and Nikon thunbs down.
Wait, are these images straight out of the camera or are they edited?
love the grading.
Yeah, Chris is usually *very* exact and good in stating facts etc. :)
True for JPEG shooters who don't do heavy postprocessing, not so much for RAW shooters like me.
Lofote EVF doesn't show you what you get, it has limited dynamic range, my eye can still see much better and raw will capture me those details.
Is ks2 better than canon t6i ? Anybody can suggest please
spots on the camera lenses and many corrections. I'm used to a certain standard from you guys!
I would buy Pentax if I wasn't so married to the Canon system of lenses. Pentax also doesn't have newer lenses that will be compatible to their new full frame sensor coming out in the near future.
I love the colours, snappy and pop, watch out the colour police are about, best friends with the grammar poo poooo....
Chris's 3 hobbies: Eat, sleep and abuse Pentax xDDDD
was this video recorded on a ronin?
Damian Lickindorf watch the intro again - and read
MrKikoboy ronin is not a camera....
o.o3 tells you the answer
