I like your low budget approach also. I was looking foreward to Unkle Tonys Mission Impossible myself. Seeing what can be done with a dime a dozen low perfomance 318. Using all of its origional parts. Just being massaged and warmed over. True first generation hot rodding. He says he plans oj doing the build in the future himself. I hope he does. This build is the next best thing. Almost all stock parts. Low budget. With some easy stock intake mods.

Been using a great muffler shop since 2011, no complaints. Prior to that, the place I used got mufflers on your vehicle in the cheapest way possible. People drive for miles yo use that shop even now. Took an 88 Ford diesel in there, an old work truck by that point, muffler just finally fell off. I was specific about him using the right muffler. Pick it up, its quiet, I'm happy,. Although it seemed to be lacking power but I caulked it up to being quieter. Well he used what looked like a muffler for an M Farmall from a Fleet Farm store. When went to change the oil it was like nothing I'd ever seen, didnt want to come out ! Talked to a diesel guy, and the first thing he mentioned was a restricted exhaust system. He looked at the muffler and asked what idiot installed it.
Even a 14.9 through the 1/4 mile is good. That's about what some of the original "musclecars" ran stock. It's all about squeezing whatever performance you can out of what you have.
I put the headers on yesterday, on my 318 in my gen 2 ram. I just need to run the rest of the way, today. Welding goes quick. I weld up a set of pipes, in the same amount of time that it takes me to remove manifolds and install headers. Anyways, thanks for the content.

Agreed with what you say at the end buddy. What 8 3/4 case are you running? i think i had some 3.91 489 gears but i might have traded them to Terry i don't recall, ill look in the shed, you can borrow the 4:10s out of Death Pumpkin also if you need them for testing thats a 489 also.
Great headers. Really like the way they flow down to the collectors unlike some of these "cheapie" headers that have the #3 pipe going over the #7. Seem to have good clearance underneath as well. Worth the expense.
I think that’s a very realistic goal and I think you’ll make it Tim. All of those upgrades are big upgrades too! Headers are sometimes as high as 20% increase, from the tight stock converter to performance converter of around 2800-3000 is around 30% increase, and even the 355 gear is a 23% increase over what you have now! Those upgrades are definitely going to be a great help in getting there. I think the 318 will run the 1320 in 13.20 this year 🤷🏻♂️call it wishful thinking 😁🙏
Years ago I was able to get from Direct Connection a 3.90 gear set for the 8-1/4" rear end in my Satellite. That really put the 318 in a good RPM range. I think I paid, if memory serves, $79 for the gear set. It was "on sale".
I put a small dent by the torsion bar. This car has the shoemacher mounts. Plenty of room by the steering box. On my other Duster, I didn't have to dent anything but it was a factory V8 car!
Hi Tim , Not hating or offended . most after market turbo mufflers are restrictive . if you do deside to upgrade check out the brand Pypes exhaust . their muffler Turbo Pro is a better design frees up horse power and flow while keeping some of the sound down. the way the muffler is designed reminds me word for word when Dave Vizard discribed his own style of turbo muffler he made back in the day that he flow tested. i mentioned this new muffler to him on one of his lives and he said it sounds just like his design. Anyway awsome car / Awsome upgrade . Heart Throbe Exhaust has been around for years 😎 👍🏁
Headers, gears and converter, I think you probably have it covered. 13.9 is doable. My white Duster(stock 340) went 14.7 with 2.76s and I switched to 3.55 open and it went 14.1. Good luck Tim, I’m pulling for the 318.
I have a 3" in 3" out dynomax super turbo. No irritating buzz or drone, only hear good motor tunes when the pedal is down. Headers, dual 2 1/4 into single 3. If you are in Flagstaff, you have some significant elevation. 13.9 would be sweet.
How well did the passenger side tailpipe fit? On my car it looks like the fuel tank wasn’t meant for dual exhaust. I was gunna order that kit but I’m not sure if I need a different tank.
They stick out past the bumper, you have to cut to desired length. Tailpipes fit ok, just got to be careful to keep it away from frame so it doesn't rattle.
Tim are you going to put a H pipe in it? Also 4.10 ? Are you going to be able to rpm it? You said the bottom is stock. I can’t wait to see this come together! Tim I have never had an exhaust shop give me one that looks that good. And!! Also hitting the bottom of the car. I had a duster. Never looked that good.
No to the H-pipe. I want 4.10's, and I shouldn't run out of RPM's. Yes, the bottom end is stock. Heads are stock too, except I added a "340" type of springs and I dremeled on the heads.

Well, I would call anything from the 1990's on up "newer cars". If you are looking at 2010's, I'd suggest 2013 and up. You'll get a better transmission, and likely a better car. Dodge Challenger, Charger, Mustang, or Camaro will all get you about the same type of car. Just pick style, color of choice.

That is a beautiful exhaust. I personally love the turbo mufflers. They are quiet at cruise but they come alive when on full throttle.

Yep, this is what I am going to put on my 340 Dart. Right now it has short glass packs and I really don't like the sound all that much.

I used the Jets 2-1/2 exhaust kit with Hooker 1-5/8 headers on a ‘74 Duster. It worked out very well. It’s an easy 400 hp capable exhaust system.

I forget. Did you have to dent the Dougs Headers to make them fit, or was there enough room with the Manuel Steering?
