Back in the real early 2000s, when gas took a big price hike, I freshened-up the (numbers matching-lol) 318 from my '86 D-250, and removed the '76 .040" over 360 I had in there. It pulled like a hoss with the 367 but gas costs were killing me. I used the truck as a daily and to tow my Demon and other cars to the racetrack. I had the heads rebuilt and upgraded to 1.88x1.60 valves by the machine shop, after I gasket matched the intake ports to a 340/360 gasket, so I could retain my 340 intake. The same machine shop had an abandoned, new Crane 272 "Energizer" cam with .454" lift (same as Cam Dynamics and Summit/Elgin white box cams), that they gave me free! I put a set of Melling lifters on there and replaced the rings and bearings throughout the engine block after deglazing (the engine was run on propane for most of it's life before I got it, so minimum wear!). It ran FANTASTIC, and besides a touch slower getting the weight moving, it was just as effective fully loaded as the 367, with much better fuel mileage (especially unloaded)!! I have since recommended the same cam as in your Low Dollar 'Teen and my D-250 to everyone wanting a good sounding yet functional low compression 318!! Thanks for posting and always good tech advice!! RB

Doug's headers are great and having the thicker flange means better sealing...love the clearance on the plugs on driver side.... The only down side to Doug's is the price but that's just the pain you have to deal with.... Hedman Elite header have the thicker flange but not as nice a fit as Doug's but a little less expensive but harder to install.

@@moparnut6286 These were the "hi-temp" painted ones, and I paid about 550 from Summit on sale. About 300 bucks more than the cheapies, and much better quality and fitment. Yes, ceramic are a great choice!

I noticed right away how much thicker the flange is on those headers, then also the fact that they don't go over the spark plugs on the driver's side. Now that's great. Then you add that there's no steering arm going through and I know that my next set of headers will be Doug's lol. Thanks for the info.

I like the color you used for the engine. I rebuilt a slant 6 in a 65 Dart, 170. And it was from the factory red, but I like the blue. I painted the engine bay black . I know the engine bay is supposed to be body color. I wasn't going to show it off at a car show, it was a daily driver. I thought it looked good.

just bring your base timing up and limit the total timing to what it wants the most. rule of thumb is anytime you go with a larger duration cam and everything else stays the same in the combo. you will have to bump up your base timing so it idles better and bring in the advance curve quicker. will be snappy, just gonna have a higher RPM range is all

I put those D453 headers onto my 70 Duster 408. Easiest install I ever did. Only after I upgraded the torsion bars to 1.03 did I have to clearance the header tubes. Also, I took off the angled oil filter adapter so the oil filter went directly onto the block like you have. Dougs did a nice job on those headers. Edit: I too put a PTC 9.5 converter that flashed to 3500 onto my Duster. That thing moved!!!

Those headers are.a major improvement over the "cheapies". I remember many times cranking on those 2 inner bolts a quarter turn at a time, and also the pipe coming up and over on the driver's side. These would be the headers I get if and when I decide to put headers on again.

Engine not level? I did the same thing. Later I took a bare block W/ heads, installed it, got the chassis level in the shop then leveled the engine across the valve covers. To correct the out of level on the drivers side (always the culprit with the adapter mounts) I enlarged the holes and welded a washer in place on each side of the mount. I located thick grade 5 washers that fit the bolts rather snugly. What about the TV linkage? I found that the factory linkage was a problem even when using a factory HP manifold on that side. Not enough room for 2 1/2" exhaust pipe. Project looks great so far.
