Blackwater Betta Setup | 6 MONTHS LATER

- I get questions about this tank A LOT! "Aren't you worries he will jump out?" No. "Is super glue really safe for this type of setup?" Yes. "How is this doing today?" Great and I think you get the idea.
I had to do a little maintenance and add some more riparian plants, so I figured now was a good time to do the 6 month update. As you'll see in the video, Casper the Amano Shrimp are doing really well and enjoy this setup. This video really shows off how spunky Casper really is as well!
Also it is actually blackwater this time around. In the initial video I said that it needed more tannins to look proper, but I still had a lot of folks commenting that it wasn't even blackwater, etc. Well there's no question about it now and Casper no doubt is the perfect candidate for this type of tank.

Six months later and doing awesome! That should have been my response when you guys asked about this one... I guess a video is even better than that. 😉 Still working through SEVERAL really big projects right now and trying to spend some time outdoors, so forgive me for a drought in project videos lately. More to come in the future. Love you SerpaSquad! Get out there and make it a good one. 😘
SerpaDesign its all good Serpa, take your time, we all understand life happens
Beautifully done mate 👍
@SerpaDesign
Did you buy your botanicals from somewhere or can you source them locally? I get a lot of pinecones, acorns, leaf litter, etc near me and I'm not sure if you can use those for a blackwater tank or if you need to buy them.
You should do a update on the dinosaur plant and let it grow
I couldn’t find you on Instagram ☹️ I really want to make a betta tank (I’m a newbie) can you help me? I have tons of questions 😅
So the Boston tea party was actually darkwater enthusiasts wanting to turn Boston river into darkwater aquascape.
Lol! Why am I only seeing this now 🤷🏼♂️
Boston Harbor. There is no Boston River that I know about. The River in Boston is called the Charles River. Born and Raised in the Boston area for 55 years.

He is just the perfect fish for this tank. The contrasting colors are so stunning. The tank itself looks AMAZING now. I didn't think it could get better.
Love this! Bettas deserve so much more than the bowls of stagnant water most folks give them. I love how inquisitive Casper is; they're such interactive fish!
Mine have 29G and it is very playful
True that. Seeing this makes me feel guilty for the fish bowl I had when I was a teenager!
Yeah I saw this and feel bad for my betta now D: definitely investing in some plants and a proper setup
Bettas deserve to not getting cross breeded till they have fins whom they can't swim like a real fish. Those Bettas wouldn't survive a minute in the wild.
@@0Turbox Betta in the wild, live in rice fields where the water flow is very, very low. That is why they are like that. They do, and would survive in the wild, regardless of fin shapes.
This is hands down the nicest betta setup I've ever seen. Casper is a lucky fish!
This damn fish has a better home than me
Blackwater works majestically with a white fish, great setup
I'm pretty sure I know exactly what the snails are thinking:
"Ooh a piece of candy, ooh a piece of candy, ooh a piece of candy..."
Casper is so cute. I love Blackwater for Bettas especially. Tannins are so beneficial for them :)
What do the tannins do for them? Do they have better looking fins?
@@jimothyj2638 Tannins can not only lower the pH making ammonia less toxic, but the colour the water gets also makes the fish feel more comfortable.
@@jimothyj2638 They also have anti fungal properties, among other benefits. Great for bettas since they're prone to fin rot.
@@SerpaDesign what are tannins and where can i get them
Inês Azevedo you can buy Betta leaves on eBay or amazon and add them to your water
Casper looks so happy! Such a lively fish. He's a beautiful one too.
I love the way Casper comes to investigate whatever you're doing with his tank. The setup is just awesome and the new plants growing above the water line really add another dimension. Love it
Hi Tanner, Caspers home has got to be my favorite! Stunning set up. Perfection in a Tank:) thanks for the update. ✌
I love your knack for putting contrasting foliage textures together. Always looks so awesome!
been following you since around 20k subs, and your skills both with camera and design have improved. nice work.
Casper is stunning and he really stands out!
Great video as always. It was pretty cool to see you wearing your wedding ring now. Kinda got me in the feels. Hope you and your bride have a wonderful week!
casper looks so happy and active! beautiful job on this one 🖤
I love your dedication and patience you have, in all the things you do.😉😊
Thanks for the update on Casper and his setup it continues to look better and better. Between you and JH Aquatics, you guys have me picturing a new project, a large black water betta vase. Thanks as always Tanner, keep up the good work!
Stumbled into this vid. Prolly the best-looking blackwater aquarium I've seen on RUclips. 😍😍😍
that before and after was insane, the tank grew in really well, congrats on the effort
Your videos and encouragement have inspired me to try starting a Betta tank...I’ve never had a fish before, but your plants and fishy friends are so cool that I really want to try it for myself!
The tank looks awesome. I think I should try blackwater ! Casper is such a beauty!
I love this tank! And all your tanks/terrariums. Casper is so brave!
The tint was so cool. Great effect, and awesome video as always.
In the last 2 months you have taught me a lot by me just watching your videos and all the knowledge that you have given me about aquariums has a help me build my aquarium that is just going amazing with very little maintenance 30% water changes once a week everything is going beautiful thank you.
you have really made a beautiful home for casper tanner. it's one of my favorites that you have achieved. cp.
It looks so lovely! Especially the dark water that *really* makes the pure white betta stand out ❤️
I made my first black water betta tank! It’s about 9 gallons.
Look how beautiful this setup is... he's got to be the happiest betta out there!!😁👍
Well, I love your channel. So creative. I am really interested in this beautiful blackwater tank. I want to do one so I read/watch all I can before I even start. I'm learning so much, even at my age 60+. And amazing terrariums. I esp like the video of your wedding! Thanx from Oregon
This is awesome, Tanner. Really loving the black water set up.
I love design of that tank. Simply and cool.
I just got a white betta yesterday! I've got him in a planted setup but it will need to be updated soon. I've been inspired to try and do a Blackwater setup too! I love the contrast of the white fish and the dark water and scenery. I love your tank!
Thank you so much for giving Casper such a magnificent, ideal setup, this really inspired me and it was really heartening to hear that bettas and amano shrimp can be friends as I had heard somewhere else that they couldn't be. I plan on adding a little betta tank to my bedroom someday and I think that it will be something like this.❤️
Wow, that little ficus is adorable.
Lovely tank, btw. That's one lucky lil fish
Looking gorgeous. I used to have a betta that looked just like Casper... I'm gonna have to fight the temptation to go get another one
Really great video, Tanner! The tank looks fantastic! I love the fish oven mitts, by the way! 😀🐟🧤👍
OH NICE I can see now you planned ahead for Casper, he really stands out in the dark water! Perfect setup to display a white fish
Beautiful, love this tank, and Casper is gorgeous.♡♡♡♡
Beautiful Betta!
I use to have one just like this one, it stayed alive for 3 years.
Nice aquarium 👍
Never knew you could do that with tea! My bf is the fish guy, and I'm big into plants, and I hope I can convince him to let me plant a tank one dah
I love how Casper has such snake - like movements.
Amazing work as always, I'm just trying to comment and give you more revenue. Haha
That's awesome, what a good idea swimming in tea! Love the effect.
That betta is so beautiful! He sure looks like he is enjoying every inches of his tank
Great tutorial, I've saved this for when/if i get an aquarium one day. Your channel sure is inspiring, keep up the good work!
The colours are stunning.
Looks great! Casper is adorable. And I can't believe this is the tank you rescued from the trash. Great lesson there!
Beautiful tank setup ideal for a betta very nice fish too good video 👌👌👌
I just redid my betta, celeste's tank into a bigger 9 gallon, and I was inspired to try out a few species of terrestrial moss from your video on moss in an aquarium. It looks awesome and I'm hoping I have success with it. Thank you for all your hard work :)
I often use your videos as guidelines for my tanks and I have a setup a lot like this one
Good choice choosing a stark white betta against all that dark! Also love the big plants you binded to the top wood.
Very, very beautiful thanks for sharing 👍
Aloha Tanner I really enjoy watching your videos thanks for sharing
Hi im from Malaysia and now surveying on black water betta tank for my betta. Awesome video and i hope i can see more videos on this setup and casper. TQ!!
Whoever complained that a blackwater tank is wrong for bettas, people please. I'm Asian. Live where bettas are found. And I approve of this. Coz they friggin' LOVE blackwater! And so do I... 😘
good point
Black water is good for Betta. I use ketapang aka Indian almond leaves to improve my water quality 👍🏻
People also think bettas can be kept in small jars. Best not listen to these "people".
Casper is so fortunate to have such a beautiful home.
Nice video! Thanks for the update👍
Happy Casper Happy Tanner!!!❤
That betta is very lucky to have such a beautiful home.
It's stunning!!
Omg Casper looks healthy and happy ❤️
Casper is Beautiful, I have had my Betta for going on 2 years, I am still learning
That's a really nice project. You gave me some ideas.
Nice video 👍beautiful betta 😍😚🙋
Beautiful! The dark color really sets off Casper - He looks like an angel!
Just curious- for the blackwater effect, why don't you use the cooled blackwater from your boiled botanicals?
I can be too strong and seriously drop the pH to 3 or lower. Remember that boiled tannins are concentrated and not slow release. You don't want to shock your fish with a sudden pH drop. He could save the blackwater concentrate and dilute it with treated tap water, spring/well water, or distilled water, but I'd check the pH before adding it to the tank to be safe and cautious.
I expect people are afraid of nature. My wild bettas came from am environment with a pH of about 3, no one is crying I haven't put until in peat water.
Can't wait to see the emersed plants fill in, especially the 'Quercifolia' 🔥When you did this tank it inspired me to re-scape my own Fluval Spec V. It hasn't filled in as much as yours, but I do have some Marsilea 4-leaf clover that has gone bananas. I need to take a pic and post it on Insta.
This is so gorgeous you are so talented, also I would have never thought rooibos tea could be used for blackwater thats so sick, now I dont need to go buy anything to experiment. I mean always wondered about normal black tea but I figured caffiene would be bad, but thats where my thought process stopped haha.
Really interested to see how the wandering jew does because I have one and I would love love to put a sprig of it on my tank but I thought they liked a little bit more dry conditions, like very well drained? But yeah im no expert haha.
from what else i've read, it also has added health benefits - for the fish AND for us humans!
He is not lying when he said blackwater...
Love your Betta and your vids
you're a true artist Tanner, this is an awesome tank and your explanations and step by step directions are great. I have couple comments and a suggestion;
1. I noted you mentioned using a heater in this vid. its so critical to maintaining ANY kind of fish or rep so please emphasize it more next time to let people know how important it is.
2. another way to keep water dark w/low pH (4.5-6.0) is use regular peat moss in a bag in the wet dry filter. a bag is like $2 at lowes or home depot.
3. since you like south american type tanks, I think you should absolutely do a discus tank. yes, the fancy ones can be way expensive but simple ones are relatively cheap. if you built the betta a new tank, the discus could go into his old one immediately assuming your biological is intact. they are stunningly beautiful fish and not too hard (like some saltwater fish are) to keep. give em a try.
thanks for the vids, I'll keep watching......
Been waiting for the update🙏
I saw the 1st vdo, it's amazing how the plants grown 🌱🌿🙌🏽. I really enjoy your vdos, congrats 🏆👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. And Casper 👻 is an extraordinary male VeilTail Betta fish, it's hard to find out white solid color 👍🏽.
I used to breed betta fish but due to pandemic I got sick and couldn't take care of them, also couldn't buy their feed 😭.
Now I'm saving money to buy a couple of Betta 😄, but 1st I must clean up all my tanks.
Thanx again for sharing your experiences with us🌿🐠👍🏽.
Looks great! Casper looks very much like my Betta Jasper.
I watched the video and you are cool.
Always be happy. betta is love
I love that his tank is basically just a leafy cup of tea
this is a really cool tank!
I don’t skip any of the ads on your vids and that’s my wedding gift to you and Alyssa
Ooooooooh, I've been wanting to get a betta tank again, but couldn't quite think of what I'd want to do, but... Oh my, a blackwater setup definitely looks interesting, especially with the extra above-water elements....
It looks amazing!
My betta jumped out of his tank through a small opening in the cover. I found him on the counter. Luckily he survived. Bettas are such great fish - so interactive with people. Casper is beautiful!
those fish oven mittens are super cute!!
Looks beautiful thanks.
this tank is so cool! hope you make another update one day
black water + white betta is art
My betta fish is naked ghost and looks just like your fish! Love the tank
Skill level unparalleled 👌
Thanks for uploading on my birthday.
Happy birthday Conrad! Get out there and do something awesome. 🎂
Thanks man.
Love these aquarium builds😍 Will be trying to get together my 54 litres aquarium to look something like that. Still thinking of what kind of fish i Will get. I have alot of yellow striped shrimps so would be cool to have fish that have bright colors.🤩
Awesome mate!, that's what the Betta tank should look like :)
Beautiful!!!!
Casper seems very curious about what you're doing, what a cutie
Bettas can be very territorial so It's understandable that they're curious about whats happening to their territory.
Ahhh , Casper and his Shrimp friends!!
So perfect betta acuarium .
Hey Tanner, nice tank. I love the dark looks of it. I noticed that you struggled a bit by tying the plants to the wood, using this long, loose string. As a advice, you should consider getting yourself a simple and cheap fly tying bobbin. It will grab the to the spool and you can tie your plants with one hand
This a sweet tank bro!!!
No issues with Casper jumping out of the tank? Loving your content!
Woah caspers grown!
I have tried tea on a badly algae tank and surprisingly it killed 100% algae in 2 weeks. You can try yourself. Tea is not bad for fish. It helps maintain pH as well. BUT IN RIGHT QUANTITY
Ser Bronn of the Blackwater
So cool you finally added some plants on the woods pieces
Do you plan to reproduce Casper ?
This tank looks dope men as the others
Nice tank. I am using some of the cooled down water after boiling the botanicals.
