Mist Dripwall Betta Paludarium

- Last year I made the all-in-one betta aquascape. I really enjoyed that project and the inhabitants it housed. A few weeks back though, the betta it was built for (Ellie) decided to jump out. After that, we no longer wanted to keep the tank around. So, I moved the other inhabitants into their own tank.
I knew we'd get my wife another betta, but I didn't intend for it to be this soon. One thing led to another and I found a fish that I knew she'd love. Here's how I made a paludarium for her new fish.
The aquarium, crypt plants, and fava ferns were provided by Flip Aquatics.

I knew that I had to make a paludarium this time around for my wife's new betta. What do you think of the project and Mia? I've never seen a betta that looks quite like her. Also, what's your favorite pizza? 🍕😉
i like my pizza thin crust, extra sauce, NO cheese, with onions, olives, and nutritional yeast on top. weird, but you asked.
Chicken bacon ranch pizza
Absolutely beautiful. I think it looks better without a mist...but it's just my preference. 👍👏👏👏
...and pizza? Chicken Barbecue with goat cheese. 😁
Steak taco pizza from Amherst house of pizza in Massachusetts. I take a 2 hour drive a couple times a year just for it.
Looks great! I like all pizza, but I miss a classic slice of New York pie.
I was really confused about the pizza ad because I'm on RUclips Premium. Well done, Tanner!
Yeah me too, I was like what the hell RUclips.
Agreed. I wasn’t real happy he did that.
Same. I was like what I'm the world is going on here!
Nice one Tanner, you got us with this one.
Omg that add was gold got me good!
Woah.... How rich are you bro ?
PLEASE give us a whole SERIES even on which plants work best in which environments and also how to select the appropriate hardscape materials! I know there's certain trees and rocks that shouldn't be submerged but it's hard to find out with Google unless you know what to google and the internet seems opposed to giving a truly comprehensive list for anything. I think comprehensive videos on what plants and materials would be great for whenever you're in a project rut or it's just want to make something different and they would help those of us who want to start but still are too worried about what we don't know (to be fair that could just be me). Anyways love you Tanner! Hope you and all your critters are doing well!
Agreed !!
I second this! I have both a 30 gal tank and a 10 gal tank that I would love to turn into paludariums, but I don't even know where to start
(No fish, I hate fish, but I'd like some little shrimpies or something similar just to give it a little extra "life" without being a ton of work once it's up and running)
YES. Omg, you said it perfectly. I have been trying to experiment and learn on my own where internet sources are lacking, but I really don't have the time or money for extensive trial and error. It would be great to get a comprehensive tutorial so that ppl in my position dont need to waste resources in failed projects.
Seconded!!
Yes please!!!
2:20 that was amazing 😂 Im on mobile so I was very surprised when the "skip add" button showed up like it does on a computer :)
Is that why I never see adverts? I often see people complaining about the number of adverts on various videos but I literally never get any. I live in West Africa so I thought maybe nobody was bothering to advertise here.
@@gardeninginthedesert Probably your location, I never used my mobile devices to watch youtube if I could help it until I got premium because the ads were overwhelming.
@@gardeninginthedesert I'm on mobile and get ads like crazy. I think op meant that they were surprised to see a desktop-STYLE skip ad button when on mobile, since the apps look different between mobile and desktop.
Fish jumping is a natural occurrence when they are interacting with each other so consider putting on a lid with little holes in it to keep them from getting out. It doesn’t always look good but it will save their life so good trade off.
Yes, it’s also good to have floaters and a lower water level
Lids are a MUST..you have to think about safety over esthetic. A beautiful tank is amazing but you MUST think about the "what if" scenarios that can come up. Fish jump...sometimes even if they feel completely comfortable in the set up..that's why lids are needed.
Another beautiful build! Yes, it would definitely be interesting to see a video that talks about the details of working with aquatic plants. I've always loved the look a natural aquascape but have never had the time to do the research I thought it deserved. A video on the basics of how to create and care for a scape with aquatic and semi-aquatic plants would be great! Keep up the good work.
I love Bettas. Every Betta I’ve ever owned has just been personality packed! They are smart and affectionate and glad to see their human. Such cool little fish.
I'd love a video about filtration in these sorts of setups! another video that I would find really practically useful is a bit of a guide to some of your favorite plants, and some that are more tolerant/friendly to beginners!
I would love to learn more about how to choose waterline plants, I have seen such interesting behaviour with my fish when they have a "shore line" so to speak, or an overhang. Would love to be able to break it up with more plants but it's hard to find information online, a video on your decades of experience would be invaluable 😍🤣
Technically you can use almost all aquarium plants, since they are almost all swamp type plants (some eclusions apply, like blyxia japonica, which only has a submersed form).
So most can grow under and above water, thus they can break that line. (for example use mosses lile weeping moss, or taxiphyllum types, or plants like hydrocotyle tripartita/hydrocotyle sp. japan/hydrocotyle verticillata or utricularia gramminifolia [a carnivore, but harmless and doesn't grow traps with the normal amount of nutrients; also has beautiful flowers when emersed] as vine-type plants that grow downwards into the water, or basically every stem plant to grow out of water, or things like cryptocoryne, anubias, microsorum or echinodorus species)
He should totally create some more videos just sharing his experience! I have so many questions that I would love to have answered. After all his years in the hobby, I'm sure they would be invaluable.
Great video.
I'm not sure how detailed you've gotten into it in the past, but maybe you should do a mini-series about the technical aspect of typical tank you've made. Ranging from simple to the most ambitious.
What I mean by that is explaining each "layer" of filtration, nutrient creation, PH balancing, and so forth with regards to each part of the tank. The filters, the moss, the plants, the sub-strait, etc., and how it all works together so we have a better understand as to the WHY you do certain things and not others.
I'd love to see that, too! I stumbled across your channel yesterday and am obsessed! I think this a great idea and one everyone seems to be asking (begging in some cases 😁 oh, ok, my cars 😂) for.
One of my favourite builds for a few months. I really appreciate the look of this one.
Ok, maybe I'm tired and hearing things. But at the end "demystify" with the mist on screen and then "leaf me a thumbs up" with the leaves? Are you making puns Tanner? 😂
I caught this too, it sounded a bit fishy to me
He betta got it right on time! 😂😂😂😂😂😭😭
I would love that more in-depth video, especially on getting marginal plants just right! From selection of plants to placement/depth to what kind of substrate to choose (moss wrap and mount, high-humidity ABG above the waterline, just aquasoil, a LECA container...???) and as always... how to troubleshoot when things don't thrive.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us in such an accessible way. I love all your builds, they're stunning, and you gave me the knowledge and confidence needed to start doing my own, which has brought a lot of joy to my life. 💜
I’m so glad you gave her a spacious tank! It’s absurd how most brands/pet stores/etc. claim that bettas will be ok long term in tiny, barren containers.
Your wife is very fortunate to have a beautiful tank like that
Yes please do a video on water line plants and natural filtration! I'm going to build an indoor/patio pond here soon and would love to hear your options for plants
Me too! I would love a video like that! Serpa design was one of those who led me to make my fishkeeping channel! 😄
Thank you Tanner for being who you are, I'm pretty sure there is no way your mind can grasp how many lives you've changed. You opened the gates to one of the most sublime hobbies on this planet to millions of people. Ever since I started watching your videos I've made about half a dozen terrariums (all of them successful!) and my mental state has improved greatly. Love you, dude!
I tried to search for a patreon or some other way to donate to you but you don't seem to have anything besides your merch, is there a method I overlooked or are you perhaps thinking of something like that? I'd love to give at least a fraction of what you've given us back.
Just watch the content, like the vids, and share if you feel obliged. Thanks for the love! 💕
really enjoyed the mossybrickpizza topped up with some cheese and botanicals
RUclips needs to add a 'love' button just for your channel. Every single video is amazing and I'll watch any content you upload. Thanks Tanner!
I’d love to see some in depth videos on plant selection, the filtration in these setups, and everything of the sort! A mini series covering the different topics would be great.
I love betta fish so much and really sympathized with your wife’s loss, so I’m so happy that you found a new little lady for her with a fun personality and stunning colors! The tank is such a good idea to keep her safe and happy as well. I think you definitely nailed everything about this. I would also LOVE a video that would demystify the process! I’m super interested in natural filtration.
Extensive video on plant selection? Yes please!
I’d love a video about these low-tech setups! They seem beautiful and low maintenance.
I really enjoyed this build. So sorry about your wife’s old fish. Yes a video about the way this type of tank is naturally filtered would be great
WOW, what a gorgeous Betta! I've never seen one with those shades of blue and yellow mixed together. And what an amazing scape to highlight her. Gorgeous.
She's a very pretty betta.....and that is an incredible tank ! Nice work !
I think this is your best betta tank, and that "ad" had me rolling.
10:23 - 11:08 Definitely need that video in 2023 with recommended plants to use
My cat was really into this when I played it on my tv. The fish was the best ofc but she really liked the plants.
I would definitely like to see how you put together a natural filtration system!
Definitely, demystify the process. There's so many choices.
Extensive video on the “why” you choose the plant combinations you do? Yes, for sure!
"It looked good but a little too drippy"
-Tanner Serpa 2021
I was rewatching your building trying to ride out this depressive episode I'm in now. Every now and then it gets so bad I get serious neck pain and can't get out of bed. So I was like, I need fish in my life... BUT that subscribe thing - that wsa actually my first laugh in a really long time and it cleared my ache for a while there. I love this channel.
Would you ever consider building a saltwater aquascape with saltwater livestock? Maybe some kind of scape one might observe while snorkeling?
Mia is gorgeous. Love her new set-up. Thankyou
I've seen freshwater clams at my local pet store. Have you ever thought of tanks with them or are they an animal you decided against for your tanks
Awesomeness. I love betas. I have 5. But their tanks look nothing like this. So beautiful.
your wife will be a happy camper !!!! old adage happy wife , happy life !!!! greetings from Florida !!!!
My lady and I have betas, lot of people never think you’ll get that attached to them but next to your cats my fish became my little buddies
Is the water oxygenated enough as to where the betta won't need to use its labyrinth organ? I'm wondering if the atomizer could negatively affect the betta breathing from the surface. The atomizer effect looks aaawesome, otherwise.
I thought the same things. I worked at a pet store, and we always informed customers that betta tanks need a lid to keep the airtemperature and humidity above the tank relatively stable, because they could get sick otherwise. I would think the atomizer negatively affects the betta's breathing. :/
I request more wife-inspired fish namings !!!! I hope Mia will have a long and beautiful life with the two of you and not cause another heartbreak.
Who else accidentally skipped ahead on the pizza ad
When he’s not awkwardly forcing his voice to deepen his videos are really enjoyable.
Yes please!! Video on how to make a good environment for fishies!!
Thanks for posting. You know @SerpaDesign , These vids are so dense w/ info, and calming, and 3 months after my BF introduced me to your channel, my interest was reignited, and *poof*, I have 3 small aquariums and am constantly foraging for mosses, driftwood, and stones. Thanks for the vids which help me escape from stress while working. *hi 5*👍🏼
I was really confused as of why I couldn't skip the ad ahah, well done :)
OMG That ad bit was genius lol. You are so witty and creative.
I'm not even into aquatic setups but your videos really got me wanting to make one.
Me too! I keep lots of nano fish and fish tanks. My aquarium channel is dedicated to them! 🐠 🐟
Yes, we would all love a breakdown on plants! It's hard to find simplified content on it.
Same! Tanner’s videos influenced me to make my own aquarium channel!
Mia is the most beautiful betta I’ve seen in a long while and the tank frames her so well!
Your "ad" really had me. I kept trying to skip then wondering why the video kept pausing. Take my Like Tanner. Love you man.
ok we need an atomizer on every paludarium from now on that was sick
Yes Mr. Serpa, demystify everything my man.
YES PLEASE make a video on plants, rocks, and biological filtration!!!! I need it!!!! It's MY video and I need it NOW!! hahaha
This is incredible. Why isn't there a LOVE button? 😃
Yes please do another vid on proper plant placement and what works together well
Wow! Love this scape and Mia is so sweet 🥰
it is true about each betta being completely different personality wise
i had two not too long ago - separate tanks of course - and one of them was very nippy with his tank mates and would chase them around if they annoyed him too much, while the other was super friendly and downright inquistive. If he saw you coming near the tank, he would spend most of the time at the glass watching you, watching everything you did
That fake ad was the highlight im sorry that was actually perfect. The build looks gorgeous too ofc they always do. I LOVE the centerpiece of this one especially.
Thanks to you I have finally discovered a new passion I didn't know I needed, thank you, and keep up the incredible work my friend!
I love that main piece of driftwood! First time I’ve experienced driftwood envy lol
Intimidated by something like this. One day I hope to create a ecosystem like this.
That is incredible scape! And Mia is beautiful.
You got me! I thought it was a real commercial! I was wondering why I can't skip it! haha
You better teach us your ways! I finally found a hobby that mixes my love for animals, entomology, plants, and rocks!
Welcome! I am a fish RUclipsr! 😄
Yes please talk about semi-aquatic and aquatic plants and planted tank, all that good stuff, share the knowledge !
Yes please!! A long dissection!! 😎😎😎😎
Bro, you had me checking my premium subscription when that ad popped up haha. Got me good. Love the tank! Keep up the good work. I find myself checking youtube everyday for your videos.
I love all your videos you are the one that inspire me to get in the hobby and yesterday was the anniversary of one year
That one is truly beautiful as they all are you are truly talented, you have inspired me to go fully bioactive with my crested geckos tank so thank you and keep up the fantastic work👍
Please do that in-depth video on plant selection, it would help a lot of people out!
Mia is sooo lucky to have you ❤
Yes please, a video on that would be very nice, thank you.
I would love to see you elaborate on a small build like this. To be honest I really appreciate the filtration system you put together for this tank. It's so simple looking from the outside but there is so much going on to the untrained eye 👁️
Keep making videos!! 🤙
Love the koi bettas man
The false ad was honestly brilliant lol.
Neat fish she reminds me of a tiny archerfish. Keep up the good work!
Definitely would like a video explaining the whole paladarium plant choices.
Beautiful betta. And another great build.
Yesss it’s amazing!!!!! We would love to see the process demistified!!
Same! Tanner’s videos influenced me to make my own aquarium channel!
That 'ad' almost made me skip the video by accident, that was really freaking accurate
Your little feisty betta is beautiful 😍
Mia is absolutely adorable! She looks very happy in her wonderful new home.
This was so satisfying thank you. I hope to make tanks like this one day.
My Betta fish usually live a long life from 3 to 5 years and I have always buried them. They are special pets…not just any fish.
Yes, l would love to learn more from you, especially about the technical stuff, like what equipment to use and how to set it up, along with the hard scape. To me this is the most challenging work to figure out.
Hi there, been watching so many of your builds and they're fantastic! I'm starting on building a water feature in a built-in planter in our mid-century home. Completely different from an aquarium set-up, but you've given me so many good, useful ideas! Thanks for inspiring so many of us :)
Mia looks so feisty i love it!
I watched this video two times, and the ad fooled me twice lol
definitely need to see a terrestrial/emersed plant guide! covered vs uncovered and humidity requirements!
these bettas are so beautiful!
You, just now, tricked me into turning off my add blocker 5 months ago. I liked, commented, subscribed, and ate pizza.
You got me so good with that add, Tanner. Well played, sir. Well played *nods slowly*
I've been looking for a "fogger" like that for a long time. Thanks.
I would love to learn more about the plants you used for this setup as I would love to do something along those lines!
Thank you for your fantastic videos and for sharing your tips and tricks
I would love an extensive video. I don’t have a betta but when do, I would love a set up like this.
Ridiculously phenomenal. And what a beautiful betta!!
Yes! Please go through how you pick plants. I am looking at creating my own aquarium/vivarium and definaly want to figure out the best plants!
"I don't need much aqua soil" while dumping in like half the bag😂
