- The choice to get into some serious work boots is not one to be taken lightly, and once you've decided to invest in some you're faced with some choices. I decided to go with Nicks Handmade out os Spokane Washington, USA. Their Builder Pro boot is essentially the same as their famous Hot Shot firefighter boot without the flame resistant sole and thread. Furthermore you can outfit it as you like, with a composite toe, a steel toe, different shanks and patches of leather in high wear areas, even different color leather in rough out or smooth. I chose to go with walnut rough out leather and a honey Vibram sole with mine in an effort to make a tough boot that's still ultra comfortable.

An odd coincidence that this video shows up *magickally” in my feed!! I’ve been comparing White’s and Nick’s for work boot. Inside wood-related work but almost always on my feet. I noticed that White’s just recently increased some boot prices by $15-25…

My husband goes through boots every 3-6 months. The soles thin out, the boot comes apart from the sole, the inside thins out so bad he feels the nails in the boots, etc. We have bought boots from Walmart countless times because it was the only thing in our budget. Then I started buying more expensive boots 100-200 range from Amazon, or other places. But still, nothing lasts. Thank you so much for all your valuable input. I am tired of buying so many pairs of boots for him because they just don't last with the type of work he does. He is always on his feet, and lets face it -he is not a young guy anymore. He's approaching 60, has titanium rods in both of his shins from a car accident and he really needs good boots to keep him going through the day. With all that being said, I really think these would be the best option for him to give him comfort while standing on his feet lifting heavy things all day on a cold concrete floor. With all of your input on quality of boots~ I watched both your other video comparing cheap vs expensive and this video and I would have to say I am convinced buying a pair of Nicks for him would really help. Thank you so much!
I’m so glad to hear that I’ve helped you with these videos! The benefits of good footwear can not be overstated, though I understand needing to stay within a budget. If you email the folks at Nicks you’ll find that they’re extremely helpful and really go the extra mile to make sure you’re happy and get the boots that fit you and your lifestyle.
I would also check out Franks Boots. They are owned by the guy who ran nicks for almost 2 decades. A good number of the craftsman from Nicks now work at Franks. I have Nicks and just purchased a pair of custom Front Range (built on the 55 last) from Franks. 10" rough out toe and heel walnut leather, toe cap, celastic toe, lineman shank, and Vibram 430 soles. I had the uppers custom made to my measurements because stock uppers wouldn't fit correctly. I think the quality is equal or better at Franks and they are a little less expensive. I will say my Nicks are great, also built on the 55 last (the Robert). I can work a trade show on concrete for 16 hours and not suffer knee or back pain. You can't go wrong with either Nicks or Franks. Both are better quality than Whites, in my opinion, and both are American made and owned.
did you ever go through with purchasing a pair of Nicks? wondered how they worked out for you. Nicks is the original and the best. they are the only ones. that offer a try on boot and I think thats a big deal.

You nailed it ! I have a pair of Builder Pro's and I love them. Most comfortable boot I have ever had on my feet.
I love my Frank's Hand Made Boots. I have a set of their Ground Pounders. I went with the full rough out leather as well. I also got a toe cap and padded collar. I paid about $580 with options. Definitely worth it in my opinion. Once you get a pair of custom fitted work boots you'll never go back.
The only thing I'd change about them is the sole. I think when these are do for a resole I'm going with the Honey Vibram. Definitely a little more cushion and grip.
I agree, they’re a game changer. So far I like the honey Vibrams, some have said they wear down too quickly but I have about four months on these and they’re just fine.
@@CarlMurawski I've heard that but it's a trade off I'm willing to take. I like the black Vibram lug soles but they are a bit slippery on oil.
Same here, and they get pretty stiff in the cold too. Plus we electricians always have issues with our knees so any help I can get is worth it.

Hey I have a farm boss too. Ive had mine for about 12 years. Stihl quit making them for awhile but its been the best chainsaw, im glad they brought it back.
My moderate arch (what I like) try-on pair of Builder Pros are shipping back tomorrow, unchanged. I've never paid more than $150 for boots before (mind, I'm in my Sixties and have worn boots since I was 18 in the Army), and as near as I can tell what you get for $500 and a precise fit process is a pair of boots which don't fit like "boots," but fit like "socks." This is another level. Beyond my experience. Yes, other producers are this good; I didn't send them my money. I sent Nicks my money, and they've delivered.

I ordered a pair of these with the standard sole and the smooth leather, then I saw yours and really like them. I was able to change my order. I got the gum sole and rough out on the toe and the heel. I've had them since spring 2019 and love them. They fit great, my back doesn't hurt, nor do my feet.
Did you get a warning with the boots, not to stomp too many fires out.? The firefighter boots have a red tab on the sole. The material is harder than standard. It only starts to soften at 400 degrees Celsius and does not catch alight.
I have been using the Chepawwa logger style everyday for the last 2 yrs.. And when I clean them n shine its when they look kool.
I'm a longtime advocate of all handmade White's, Wesco, Hoffman, Halls, etc. There's no substitute bar none. USA craftsmanship

Good vid. I own two pairs of Nicks boots (8" Hotshot & 10" Contender) and I love wearing them. I also own a pair of older White's round toe Packers. Both are of equal quality and fit and both are the best boots I've ever worn.

I have been anticipating this review!!! You NAILD it!!! I really enjoyed your review. As always you have top notch quality content. I own a pair of the builder pros and also did the fit sheet. Highly recommend the fit sheet. Takes a bit longer but in the end you will be rewarded. When i ordered mine i was coming out of redwing 2416s and had never had the massive logger style sole so i order mine with the mini lug vibram. I regret that choice. I wore them out very quickly. I went through the heel first and my local cobbler replaced the heel with the same vibram mini lug for $20usd. Then the toe part wore through and my cobbler could not stitch through the thick leather. He was able to cut off the old and add a glue on vibram sole for $75usd. Other then that they are absolutely the nicest boots I’ve ever owned. I am ordering a second pair soon so i can send them in for a rebuild and not go naked on my feet lol. I ordered basically the same pair but haven't received mine yet. The difference in what I got is that I did rough out only on the bottom part of the boot and I went for 8 in instead of 10 in. I'm really excited and can't wait to get them. Should be within the next couple weeks.
I have both Nick's & Wesco. Both are fabulous. Expensive? Sure, they have to be given what goes into them. Worth it? Totally. I can't wait to put mine on in the morning. For people not familiar with this quality of footwear, do yourself a favor, bite the bullet and splurge on a pair. You'll be glad you did. They are A+ quality and will last forever.

Another extremely well put together video. I learned a lot about Nick’s and the quality of the boots they produce. From what I’ve seen, I can’t think of any other boot which can compare to the apparent quality, craftsmanship, durability, etc. of the Nick’s boot. I’ve never owned a Nick‘ s boot, but I’ve learned a bit from you and reviewing their website. I always look forward to getting a notification of one of your new videos. Beautiful boots
I have worn rough out boots for years. They are not more durable. They conceal damage better but the damage is there. Additionally, sand and grit works its way onto the grain of rough out leather much easier and destroys it form the inside. It absorbs more water too and wet/ dry cycles destroy leather more reliably than anything else.

great boot, ive never had a pair myself but i have a pair of whites smoke jumper. its basically the same boot. best boot ive ever had going the distance and spending 5-600 on boots is def worth it ive been buying 2-300 boots once a year on boots that dont fit right. i werar a 7F no off the shelf brand makes that.... ive been wearing 10 1/2 E to compensate. again worth the 5-600 for 10 years compared to 200 every year. great vids keep em comin
I have a pair of White's Bounty Hunters and a pain of Nicks Builder Pro's . I love the Nicks, dont care for the Whites. My Builder Pro's are the same as their Hot Shots and I really love them.
Well this video opens up a whole new side of you. Bobber, Mustang? Very good review on the Nick's! Like I said in your previous video. I own 2 pairs of Wescos and 1 pair of Whites... I'm not impressed with the Wescos. However the Whites are amazing. I've spent 23hrs straight in them and pulling them off is like a slipper. If your a working man the two things you spend the most time in are your Boots and your Bed! Don't skimp out on either of them. Have a great day. Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

Great review, Carl. Appears to be an excellent work boot. I don't own any true work boots, but I have several pairs of Allen Edmonds and Johnston & Murphy dress boots. I like that they are made in the USA.
Thank you! These may be a little bulkier than even a rugged boot like the Allen Edmonds Normandy, but then again it's not for everyone.
My last Wesco custom builds were $889, but they wear like iron. I have buddies who work on the pipeline and think I'm crazy for spending the money but they drop $250-300 on Redwings, twice a year, so what's the difference, lol?
I can offer a tip for the breaking in period, put plastic bags on each foot, put boots on and stand in the bathtub submerged in water. Get them soaked and wear them until they dry. They will form to the foot and be do much more comfortable to wear.

Great boots and great video. I love your videos. We don’t often see videos with men doing manly things and still being well dressed and well spoken.
I think, even at 600 they well worth it and probably not much more than a pair of 150 dollar Carolinas with plastic welts. I have a shoe repair shop and people around here are cheap so I see the cheap ones all the time. Then their rationale for not investing in good boots is because they wear their boots out so quick! The other problem is they often think the 150 dollar boot IS the good boot.
The other thing I see with hunting boots like Rockies with some type of tpu sole they just falls apart sitting in their closet because they only wear them 3 times a year. I explain that we can put on new midsoles and a Vibram sole and it’ll never deteriorate and I guarantee my work until they wear out so if in 8 years the sole starts coming off they bring it in and I fix it for free. It costs about 95 bucks for that and they say “But I can get a new pair for 150”. Sometimes it hardly seems worth explaining that for that 65 dollars more they’ll get an inferior sole that will fall apart before they wear it out and they’ll be lucky to get a 1 year warranty, which they won’t need just wearing them hunting but if they should need it it’ll cost 20 bucks to ship them.
You outgrow Wranglerstar in term of cinematography and content, of course just in my opinion. Getting closer to 50K Carl!

I have a pair of Danner power foreman boots that were $380. Most comfortable boots I’ve worn. I do sewer and water and whenever I don’t feel like putting on my rubber boots to stand in water, I use the danners and come out with my feet completely dry. They’re goretex lined and my only complaint is that they’re slippery in mud. Other than that, I highly recommend

Love the Fox bodies, especially a notchback. They’re getting hard to find these days though, most people chopped them up to make drag cars.

Have you used the honey vibram and the standard soles while working on the railroad? I'm a train conductor. Just ordered a set with the standard soles but might change when they wear out.
Also, how long did the honey vibram soles last?
Have you done any videos on conditioning these boots? I have roughout also and when I put the boot grease on them, it really darkened and "flattened" out the fibers.
Does tapered heel really less worn and comfortable than block heel? I am in the process of choosing a Nicks but not sure which heel to go for.

I have a pair of White's Smokejumpers that I've worn basically daily for 7 years. They're well overdue for a 2nd resole, but I just can't go without them. I'm considering a second pair, and thinking Nick's this time. Any feedback to help me decide on either another pair of White's or try Nick's? Thanks!
I just ordered Nicks Traveler boots. I wear thorogood now in 13EE and ordered 12.5E in the Nicks.
My speed hooks are too close on my Thorogoods which I could wear a 13E if offered by Thorogood.

Hey Carl, what boots do you recommend specifically for mechanics? I'm not trying to balance anything. I just want some resistance and anti slip for the nasty fluids in the shop and, most importantly, let you stand on concrete for hours and hours. I'm an aircraft mechanic and can not escape concrete.

Damn, that’s a shame. Is it just too narrow? If you go the made to order route at Nicks they’ll make sure you get the fit you need, I’d mention your experience to them so they can build a boot to fit your needs. Nicks really go the extra mile to make sure you’re satisfied.
@@CarlMurawski I tried on all the locally available Whites Smokejumpers I could find, every one of them was too narrow for me. A Nicks 9EE is a LOT roomier in the toe box than any of the Whites I tried. YMMV.
The rough out is the actual outside of the cow’s hide, like how it is on the animal, the hair side.

They do, in fact you have several toe options: Regular leather, celastic (which is like a hard paper), composite, and steel. There may be other sub-categories but you get the idea.
Idk about you but have the pants over the boots keeps the dirt out specially sand not tucking in the pants.

Well I used mine this winter and added a wool insole, and used wool socks. That kept me pretty warm but not as warm as an insulated winter boot would. These are like 90% of the time boots, when it gets really cold I break out the Baffins.
Hey Carl, I’m a huge fan. I got 2 questions for you: 1.) I was wondering how long the honey vibram soles lasted on average *for you personally* before you had to replace them. 2.) I was curious about oils, grease, and other preservatives and their effect on the finish of the boot. I recently watched a Nicks video on boot leather and how they darkened when preservative was added. I wanted to know if this darkening was only temporary or if you were stuck with it permanently. What’s youre experience with this? Thanks in advance.
Hey man! I got about two solid years of work out of the honey Vibram soles. It may be more or less depending on your job.
The Obenaufs LP I use definitely darkens the leather, but after a through Saddle Soap scrubbing they go right back to original.

Does that mean that one has to choose between keeping their boots properly conditioned or keeping the original color of their boots? That’s the Carhartt Cryder jacket. It’s pretty awesome, with side stretch panels and gussets in the arms it allows for a huge range of movement. It’s also water resistant, so it’s great for working outside... this is starting to sound like a commercial. Anyway, I love it

False tongue really isn't needed if you're using leather laces. I've used my white's for 4 years, 40 hours a week with no false tongue and there isn't a hint of damage. I think it protects more against nylon laces.
You may be right. I've come to kind of like the look, but it's definitely a polarizing style.

I actually went with the moderate arch last. The high was pretty extreme for me.

However I've bought many pairs of these quality brands on Ebay for half the price. Many were barely broken in so I've saved a lot of $$ on Ebay. Albeit not custom fit but you get what you pay for.

Did you get toe rub with the composite at first??
Steel and composite toe boots often won't fit your toes correctly, there isn't much that can be done to fix or prevent this and it doesn't generally get better with time leather cloth and pretty much everything else in the boot can mold to your foot but impact rated toes don't.

I’m on the fence. I don’t really like the high arch aesthetic but Nick’s seems to encourage medium/high arch design.
