I would love to see a special video where you build an "ultimate" modded GBA that utilizes as many mods as you can fit into a shell. HDMI, IPS, USB-C charging, LEDs, the WORKS!
I’m making one of these now I should make a video :D it has rechargeable usb c battery, ips screen, hdmi out, audio mods, de hisser, new colors and stickers, and probably some other stuiff :o
Pretty hyped for this, I don't expect it to be the same level as the consolizer (IDK how I butchered the spelling), but I hope it is better than the TV out from the IPS kits
these GBA mods are never ending, I'm still waiting for IPS kits for the Phat DS, hopefully we start seeing those soon. I have been hoarding mint condition DS's for a while now before "collector inflation" gets to them
I traded someone a DS light for a DS original because I prefer the form factor. I can not believe the gba has a better screen than the original DS that is so strange to me.
Some new screens for the DS would be nice... especially if you have one of those yellowed ones. And some higher quality shells with better color selections would be pretty cool too. I just bought a DS Lite for $15 because it wouldn't power on, F2 fuse was the issue. A couple other minor issues, but once the DS aftermarket matures a bit more, it's going to be fun to mod for too.
Phat DS is the goat. The form factor is killer, but the fragile shell and poor quality screens is the main downside. There is yet to appear for quality options for it, like it is for the GameBoy lineup.
Damn I can't believe we're this far. HDMI out on GBAs is amazing. we're so close to just a switch style dock that we can drop our retro handhelds into. I think it could happen! One thing I really like about the composite GBA out was that it used those (borderline sketchy) cables that plug right into the link port on the GBA, I think that was so cool.
@@Tobunari Their game was stepped up from the start. It's sort of their thing :) The Analogue Pocket (GB, GBC, GBA, Lynx, NGPC, GG, PCE/TG16) has a dock, which provides HDMI output, power, and built in 2.4g controller connectivity, as welll as DAC support for analog video (composite, svideo, VGA, RGB, component) as well.
i wish in 10 years we find a way for HDMI out on the new 3DS XL :( or Regular 3DS since it will be on TV... I cant believe Nintendo never made an adapter to play it on TV but they did for the gameboy on the super nintendo or GBA on gamecube...
Honestly I think this might be the last true final mod for the GBA. If they get it on par with the consolizer on HDMI video out, and incorporate a Bluetooth adapter to use your preferred wireless controller or preferably a 8bitdo sn30.
This honestly looks like the best solution out there for streaming/recording real console footage if you manage to find a capture card that gets the signal. Best of all, it’s quite cheap for a mod like this. I’m awestruck that we’re at a point where we can make HDMI-compliant boards that fit within the empty space inside a GBA shell. Unrelated to the mod, I must say that, from the production quality of the video, I was expecting this to be a huge 5M+ sub channel that I’d somehow never heard of, perhaps even corporate even though it did not feel soulless. Y’all absolutely deserve more attention and I feel like it’s only a matter of time until you get to 1M.
I don't own a GBA, but find videos showing enhancements and mods like these fascinating. One thing that I thought that would be cool with this one in particular, would be if added Bluetooth functionality, so the user could play it with external gamepads, that would be awesome.
basically your gameboy becomes a controller and console at the same time while plugged via hdmi, and goes back being a normal gameboy advance once disconnected, this is an amazing kit to say the least.
I saw this last week and wondered how long it would be till you made a video. You're always on top of things. Thanks for continuing to make great videos!
Wow, it certainly didn't take long for someone to offer HDMI output since your last video of this type of mod! It's cool that it gives you good video quality without needing to consolize your GBA, though I wonder if future revisions could potentially offer more features?
That’s a great question. I’m sure we will see more mods like this that will incorporate more features. But who knows how long it will be run until we see them. So much potential! I’m excited for the future 😁👍
This is actually nice. It’s simple, just about anyone with some soldering experience can handle this. Kinda thinking about making a nice extra GBA for this. I love the minish cap shell. Looks so cool
Well, GBA is one of the best handhelds you can get into. With Nintendo dominating the handheld world for so many years and the GBA able to play three generations of games, several of which are improved ports of earlier home console classics, it's in my opinion the definitive retro gaming handheld.
I have to say that I'm glad this thing exists, especially because those consolizer kits were FAR too expensive and take FAR too long to ship. But I absolutely love my IPS GBA with composite out because it looks fantastic on my 16:9 CRT.
This looks amazing! The ips tv out mod i got a couple months ago is already glitching out unfortunately! This seems 10x simpler and does not require so many different cables attached like those do! Thanks for showing this!
All that is need to perfect this mod is a board that not only converts and intercepts the GBA video signal, but also has testpoint inputs and power management. Couple that with a proper USB-C controller and all features are unified into a single port
Finally got this thing setup, it's very cool and works well. Works with OEM shell and screen, but I will say the ribbon cable is very hard to fit in because it's quite short. The hardest part was making the hole. Took a long time to sand down, it's not super straight like the one Macho made, but it's much smaller. I had to use sand paper because I didn't know where to get a file like the one he has.
Thank you for this tutorial! I followed your tutorial without the screen replacement part and, although I messed up the sodering part, it ended up fine. Personally I was able to livestream, using a cheap capture card (although with an audio artefact from time to time). The capture card I use has no brand, but it's the one with a small usb cord and labeled "HD VIDEO CAPTURE", "Live streaming" and "INPUT" on the front, and a green LED on the back side.
6:52.. I tried this last night and had a heck of a time soldering to those pads... Burnt right through one and had to scratch back the PCB green to expose the contact traces. Oops. Any tips?... I heated the pad first but maybe my heat was too high? May I ask what you set your iron to?
This is pretty sweet, if I didn't have so many gameboy projects on the go I would grab it in a second. I'll wait for a version that has an upscaler built in. That would make it perfect.
That minish cap shell is freakin sweet! I need to get a GBA like that back one day. Sold my glacier white back many years ago just to get my GBA Sp... one day going to learn how to solder as well to do some of these sweet system mods.
I love learning about all this new tech on your channel. I love the case but I'm bias since I really love all things Link/Zelda! I like the idea of a simple plug and play output no thrills HDMI mod. Great job and I really enjoyed this video as always!
One thing I'd consider a con is that the board doesn't actually fasten to anything, and with the placement of the HDMI port it sits at a slight angle. That's not an issue with screen driver boards, but this one has a port that you're regularly plugging something into. I would worry that over time it would come loose or get pushed into the case. I think a 3d printed bracket to hold it in place would be a great upgrade.
I just had an interesting idea with this, use a wireless hdmi adaptor, that way you don't need to be tethered to the tv while playing. I have no idea how well it would work but it would be cool.
Is there a mod that allows a Bluetooth controller to connect and control a GBA? It would be great to do this HDMI out mod and a Bluetooth controller mod to have true Switch-style GBA.
Great video I'd was looking for something to capture GBA footage and even tho this doesn't seem like it's exactly what I'm looking for was an interesting video and your GBA looks amazing now. 👍
What are the extra pins for on the 40 pin model? Also he makes it sound like it is not compatible with the front lit screens from the first version of the sp.
Now this is what I've been waiting for. Ordered with your code for the discount. The composite out kits didn't appeal to me since I'd have to replace my IPS screen currently installed. This kit is the best of both worlds. Quality on go, better quality at home. I have the Elgato internal HD capture card. I'll try my luck but it doesn't see 480p from my retrotink so I don't have high hopes. Edit: complete, the 40 pin ribbon folding back to the new PCB is actually really scary. I didn't wire in the audio pass thru as I still have audio mods I want to do first so HP jack for audio.
So you actually got the 40Pin version working? I have a funnyplaying V2 IPS Ribbon and it doesnt't work mechanically. I can't fold the IPS ribbon far enough back to get the HDMI pcb aligned properly. I'm missing about 8-10 millimeters the hdmi socket sticks out. So i won't be able to cram everything inside a shell.
I have this kit, and I gotta say, it's super nice, but the one thing I really wish was that we had a flush micro HDMI cable... Playing on the TV/Monitor and trying to use a Wireless Adapter or a Battle Network Chip Gate is impossible due to the port protruding out, as well as my Elgato HD60s+ not recognizing it, makes recording with the kit impossible. It really is a shame though, playing on the console AND being able to play it on the TV is such a neat concept. Here's hoping we also get a way to mirror the screen on both devices, so I can actually just look at the GBA, and have it on the TV presentation-style.
GBA mods getting wild. I wonder if we’ll ever see a IR restoration mod for the AGB. That combined with an IPS and a HDMI mod like this with higher resolution would be ultimate to me.
This is what I've been hoping for. The consolizer is just too expensive for me. Unfortunately, my IPS screen uses a PCB so I guess this wouldn't fit. But I'll definitely keep this on my radar.
If you also want GBA games on ur tv without any modding of a GBA, you can get a wii and get the homebrew channel and then you can install mGBA (gba emulator) and play roms off any storage device that you plugged in
Really cool. I was really hoping that the port was on the bottom of the GBA as I’d love to use it in a Switch-type device with a dock, rechargeable battery, and bluetooth for an 8bitdo controller. Pie-in-the-sky, I know, but still, I can dream.
If I had to guess, it's still Composite video internally, but since it never becomes analog in the first place, it stays relatively "clear" and doesn't suffer from analog noise and colors bleeding. That would also explain the 720x480 resolution, which suspiciously sounds like a 480i source being deinterlaced. That's also not a standard resolution, that's why the Elgato doesn't like it, it would probably work with a cheap 20$ HDMI capture card that doesn't care about standards.
I really need to look into this more. The HDMI out does soften the image. The TV out does too over composite. The GBA does output pretty decent composite and why wouldn't it being half the resolution of an SNES. There's not a lot of data the composite signal needs to carry so in the case of the GBA, the difference between HDMI and composite isn't as large as say composite vs RGB on a Sega Genesis. I really don't like the idea of hacking the ext port which limits the compatibility with accessories in doing so. I have no issues with modding an aftermarket shell.. maybe I could install a 2.5mm stereo TRS jack on the top to carry composite and audio...
Mmh I think the Big problem is that with playing and moving it the hdmi port gets woobly and Lose contact over the time. Noone hold the gba over the play time on one position
So the only issue I had with this was the weight of the hdmi cable and I think I have a solution. Do you think it would be possible to repurpose a GameCube GBA link cable to house the hdmi adapter? That way there wouldn't be any stress on the mini hdmi port.
I installed this kit finally. But i have some weird crackling noises in the hdmi sound output. Almost sounds a bit distortet/overdriven when there are some loud effects. Any ideas? Is this normal?
Hey Tito! Mind blowing HDMI for the GBA, it seems so obvious but crazy at the same time! Actually I’m digging the shell more than the actual kit haha. It’s a nice addition and I hope they keep iterating until they reach a better quality image - but are we being extra picky? Cheers dude.
Looks like you’re using a Samsung TV. It shows HDMI/DVI so that’s why you can’t capture it. Some capture devices don’t like a DVI signal so that’s likely the issue here. I believe the Consolizer kit does the same.
I hope the next revision of the thiccboy sp will use a kit like this! HDMI combined with the thiccboys other features would be even better than the analogue pocket
Sorry, so... what's different about the 40pin model? (I have a 40pin model and I got one of these kits on the way yet I just realized this guide is for the 32 pin
Now Funny playng is selling an ips v3 screen, does the hdmi mod work with that screen? I don't know how they recently released it, and the truth is that I would like that combination.🤔🤔🤔🤔
Tito, quick question on this. How is the sound through the TV with this mod? And does this only work with the IPS V2? Or does it work with some of the drop in IPS screen kits? Thanks in advance!
the biggest con for me is that its not compatable with my board based ips mod. ill have to either use an i funny drop in mod and shell (which will cost a fortune to get to canada, our dollar is worth less than the US dollar) or one of the other ribbon based mods. its not a deal breaker but its gonna be a while before i feel comfortable using those other mods. but if i were to install into a stock gba i wouldnt mind.
While interesting, I don't really have a need to output GB and GBA games to a TV. Noticed your didn't solder anything for the IPS screen kit. I'm guessing you can't adjust the brightness Any update on the Jugee battery review?
I can't wait for the first TV-out kit that offers Bluetooth controller compatibility like Analogue Pocket(yes, the argument "buy Analogue Pocket instead" isn't valid here because it isn't available in Brazil)
@@MachoNachoProductions Honestly I can't play those TV out handhelds without external controller support. I had problems with my PSP(and the TV Out is native there). That's why I like Switch hybrid solution so much.
For us that want say a portable Wii that boots ROMs of am SD is there any decent way to execute this without cutting the motherboard and using a small screen for people like me that often have a large backpack anyway so not too bothered by size? I guess like a Wii Laptop that still functions as a Wii but uses batteries. Like the rare portable kit they sold but DIY
The Elgato not picking up the signal is purely on them for not allowing custom resolutions, I simply do not understand why they do not allow the end user to capture any valid resolution if it's not in their database of "accepted VESA resolutions"
When you say that you can capture these with an Elgato, are you using an HDMI splitter and having it connected to the TV as well, or just straight into the capture card?
You only soldered the hdmi Port. But if i want to adjust brightness i need to solder sel l and r to from the ips display to the motherboard too, right? Or does it not work with the hdmi Port? Ips v2. So if im right i need to solder 2 cables for hdmi and 3 cables for brightness?
I would love to see a special video where you build an "ultimate" modded GBA that utilizes as many mods as you can fit into a shell. HDMI, IPS, USB-C charging, LEDs, the WORKS!

You got it exactly! Better quality than tv out kits but not as good as the consolizer, but it’s cheaper than both!
A colonoscopy for a GBA...
Ahhh yes, the gameboy analizer
Definitely not as good as the rectumator, but it makes it easy

There's not a lot of data the composite signal needs to carry so in the case of the GBA, the difference between HDMI and composite isn't as large as say composite vs RGB on a Sega Genesis. I really don't like the idea of hacking the ext port which limits the compatibility with accessories in doing so. I have no issues with modding an aftermarket shell.. maybe I could install a 2.5mm stereo TRS jack on the top to carry composite and audio...
Awesome video as always Tito! Where did the fairy lights go?
Good eye, I forgot to turn them on 😅
Very cool. I'm wondering how the extra used space would affect other mods like a rechargeable battery mod etc.
The C charge ones I use all house in the battery slot, so it shouldn't cause any problems with space!

Mmh I think the Big problem is that with playing and moving it the hdmi port gets woobly and Lose contact over the time.
Noone hold the gba over the play time on one position
That's one cool looking shell!
Thanks for the review.
Still waiting on HDMI SNES...
Amazing vid! I have a question. Those “thin gauge wires” you use, which diameter or specs are they?? Are they made from copper?
very interesting video. doing this for my own sounds like a super fun project for later :)
So, what did OG Game Boy and Game Boy Color games look like? Is there no way to set them to 4:3? That would be a deal breaker for me...
If this was improved to allow for capture, I could see this mod as being a necessity for speedrunners looking to stream GBA games on original hardware
It works with certain capture cards but not the elgato one featured in this video, I’m looking forward to trying it with a HDPVR2
It would be so great to also be able to connect a bluetooth controller to the GBA in conjunction with this mod!
@KwaKwak sad. Makes me wonder....why didn't machonacho notice this obvious cracking. Was it on purpose?
@KwaKwak couple of people here confirmed it.
Awesome mod. If you're just interested in HDMI out, and video/audio advantage over using, say, a gamecube w/ HDMI and the gameboy player?
Hey Tito! Mind blowing HDMI for the GBA, it seems so obvious but crazy at the same time! Actually I’m digging the shell more than the actual kit haha. It’s a nice addition and I hope they keep iterating until they reach a better quality image - but are we being extra picky?
Cheers dude.
I love this guy's content
Thank you so much 🙏☺️ that mean a lot to me!
That would be cool 😉
I definitely want this mod kit. 👍🏻
Great! I want one like this for the Nintendo 3DS. 😆 Thanks!
Sorry, so... what's different about the 40pin model? (I have a 40pin model and I got one of these kits on the way yet I just realized this guide is for the 32 pin
I wonder if running the HDMI through a splitter, solves the capture card issue.
Now Funny playng is selling an ips v3 screen, does the hdmi mod work with that screen? I don't know how they recently released it, and the truth is that I would like that combination.🤔🤔🤔🤔
That’s beautiful 👏🏽
I'm guessing you can't adjust the brightness
Any update on the Jugee battery review?
Hi there. Nice video. Do you happen to have a compatible capture card recommendation to use with this?
is there a power adapter for the game boy advance by chance so i could hook mine to a wall outlet
I can't wait for the first TV-out kit that offers Bluetooth controller compatibility like Analogue Pocket(yes, the argument "buy Analogue Pocket instead" isn't valid here because it isn't available in Brazil)
Me too!
@@MachoNachoProductions Honestly I can't play those TV out handhelds without external controller support. I had problems with my PSP(and the TV Out is native there). That's why I like Switch hybrid solution so much.
Hey there, can I get the link to the SNES themed gba shell and buttons please?
For us that want say a portable Wii that boots ROMs of am SD is there any decent way to execute this without cutting the motherboard and using a small screen for people like me that often have a large backpack anyway so not too bothered by size? I guess like a Wii Laptop that still functions as a Wii but uses batteries. Like the rare portable kit they sold but DIY
The Elgato not picking up the signal is purely on them for not allowing custom resolutions, I simply do not understand why they do not allow the end user to capture any valid resolution if it's not in their database of "accepted VESA resolutions"
Would this kit work with the funnyplaying laminated screens, or is there a newer hdmi kit out there for the gba?
When you say that you can capture these with an Elgato, are you using an HDMI splitter and having it connected to the TV as well, or just straight into the capture card?
You only soldered the hdmi Port. But if i want to adjust brightness i need to solder sel l and r to from the ips display to the motherboard too, right? Or does it not work with the hdmi Port? Ips v2. So if im right i need to solder 2 cables for hdmi and 3 cables for brightness?
Hey Tito,
What would be the best quality backlit screen you’d recommend for the game boy advance to work with this HDMI mod.
Love the videos btw.
