I went to NYU with Todd. We had a table of 5-10 friends at the dorm & had lunch and dinner together pretty much every day. We stayed friends until I left NYC in '98. Surely the most successful person I've ever known. I was at that NYU GG Allin show where he got naked, I think they did like 1 1/2 songs and it was over .
I can't believe we're talking about a film director, who was coming from making The Hangover trilogy, then they chose him to direct "Joker", starring Joaquin Phoenix whose performance blew my mind as I always knew he was going to win the Oscar for his Joker's role, and he made it.
First of all, Great video! I like most Todd Phillips movies well enough (hated The Joker, though) but I think the problem with Phillips as a filmmaker is that he never evolved. He’s exactly at the same level of introspection and emotional maturity he had when he made Hated. This is why most artists become stale if they live long enough to grow old. They eventually stop evolving and they’re left behind. However, Phillips started out stale but managed to succeed because of his other(better) attributes. I think Phillips’ decline will be slower because he is talented, but he’s already showed that he has nothing interesting to say. I feel The Joker fooled a lot of people. From a technical standpoint it’s a well executed film, but the script was piss poor and derivative. Its success leaned heavily on Joaquin Phoenix’s performance and a woeful lack of media literacy. I would like to see Todd Phillips do better but I’m not gonna hold my breath for it. I have no plans to watch the second Joker movie but I will check out your video on it. I’ll also check out the rest of your channel. This quality of content is very bingeable.
On paper Todd Phillips background with Hated documentary alone makes him an insanely good fit for writing Joker 2, perhaps even more so than Joker 1 (given that he began working on it while GG allen was in prison , and the documentary also focuses on the fandom surrounding this figure , his bizzare association with John wayne gacy). The story behind How (or perhaps why) this man did not slam dunk with sequel can perhaps be a subject for its own documentary.
26:15 I don't believe that's the message here, the music is literally horror music, and it's telling us that this is terrible. The only reason you might think they want you to think it's funny is because Joker smiling at the camera like he deserved it, but you yourself know he did not deserve to die. You could laugh because Joker is so detached from reality.
Oh, it's definitely not the message. It's not a joke you're supposed to laugh at, but it's set up like one. It plays back to when Arthur says his life is a comedy and the running gags that happen along the way play to that in a dark way. A lot of those moments are set up similar to other Todd Phillips comedic films, but in this framing it's not supposed to be comedic in the sense that you laugh at it.
@@FrameVoyager yeah must be gut wrenching to put that much effort into a video and have it not reach the audience. I’m a RUclipsr too I get it. Keep up the good work mate ☺️🙌
19:03 I think that if something is offensive but it's funny - then it's just funny. But when something is offensive but doesn't really manage to be funny - then it's just offensive. It's not about how offensive something is really.. It's about.. Is it funnier than it is offensive? If not, then it's a problem.
@@FrameVoyager in a good way of course. I initially thought this would be strictly Joker production "stuff" - which it was - but you really did a DEEP dive from the beginning with the punk rock doc... all leading to JOKER. I was surprised at first but I found the story engaging and really dug it.
@FrameVoyager Thanks for the clarification. It's because it's not the real deal and I'm not always certain why it is that the real voice is not what we're hearing. Your voice is pretty awesome and buttery too bro btw haha. I happened to tune out around 1:40, maybe because it wasn't clear to me that the rest was from a different interview or something, but like in some other cases, i felt like some clarity/truth was taken away (perhaps) for the sake of flow/convenience/whatever. I appreciate and admire your work highly and don't have any good answer to this, particularly because many others i assume are also much of the time not able to watch every second but mostly listen. I do recognize this is not a podcast but you're so gifted i wouldn't be surprised if you found a way to solve this without too much sacrifice to the content of the story. ❤️
Well, for our scripts, we kind of have to string together various interviews because not everything is covered in just one video or one article. Whenever I do the quotation marks it's getting directly quoted from an article and not something that has a video with it so there is no way for me to have Todd Phillips or whoever the subject is say those lines for me so I read them. I try and source video interviews whenever I can but a lot of times publications cover topics better and ask more in-depth questions than the video interviewers do, so we often have to use portions from articles in the work. So that's why you're not hearing the real voice but it is real quotes from the subject. But as you can see, we source what publication it came from when we do that. Some of these interviews kind ramble on or go all over the place in topics so it's really about getting the essence of what is being said and boiling it down to easier-to-digest pieces that flow better. But we never try to intentionally twist any clarity/truth when writing it in.
Thank you for the thorough and thoughtful response. It was great and i really appreciate it. Also i never thought you were even remotely insincere in your expression/content. Just throwing wishes in the air. Much love and respect.
What is your favorite Todd Phillips film?
Joker :P
Joker, it changed his career, to be more than a comedic director.
Joker 2
The Hangover is his most classic and I'd argue his best, Due Date is a dirty fun ride, and Joker changed the game for him.
@@yungpapi honestly interested to see what he does post joker
Wow, this was intense. Fantastic editing! Your set pieces and shot compositions make me wonder what you could do with a bigger budget.
Appreciate it!
It would be cool to have a bigger budget! haha
The first rule of documentary filmmaking is not to lie. The first rule of documentary is to embellish.

That’s far too subtle for Todd Phillips

Awesome video. Todd is a heavy hitter, but somehow still underrated as a director.
